Continuity mistake: As he walks up to Art Huck's garage Marlowe's car is in a totally different position (with the right front tire now on a rock) from when he just skidded off the road. (01:33:55 - 01:34:30)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe walks into Bernie Ohls' office and the sunlight coming through the blinds falls on the statue sitting above the bookcase as Bernie tells him, "You're to lay off the Sternwood case". They only speak for two minutes but as Marlowe walks out the sunlight falling on the back wall is in a different spot. (01:18:55)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe says to Eddie Mars as he's about to leave his office, " Oh, Eddie, you don't have anybody watching me, do you?" And the collar of Marlowe's shirt is tucked under his jacket. The next time we see it about a second later it's been ruffled up and is no longer tucked under his jacket. (01:10:20)

Continuity mistake: After Marlowe walks out of Eddie Mars place to his car he reaches for the gun under his dashboard with both hands. In the next shot his left hand is behind the gun. (01:12:55)

Continuity mistake: In his apartment there's a pipe rack in the shadows on the table next to Carmen. Marlowe says to her, "What do you remember about Shawn Reagan?" and in the next shot the pipe rack is lit up. (01:17:35)

Continuity mistake: As Tor Johnson goes into the graveyard with his flashlight we see the same headstones we saw a few moments earlier when the woman screamed, only now they've been rearranged. (00:10:20)

Continuity mistake: Mars' thugs meet up with Marlowe at the bar and tell him that Mrs. Rutledge wants to see him. The two people sitting at the bar behind the thug in the center get up and move between shots. (01:10:15)

Continuity mistake: After speaking to Lauren Bacall on a restaurant pay phone, two thugs jump Marlowe in a dark alley and the thug on the left throes a punch at him. The punch is at his face but in the next shot Marlowe's handkerchief gets knocked out of his pocket. (01:22:55)

Continuity mistake: In the restaurant Marlowe sits looking down at the table as Lauren Bacall talks about General Sternwood and says, "he considers the case closed". She's holding her pocketbook with the strap between the first and second finger of her left hand but in the next shot the strap is in a different position near her left thumb. (01:02:00)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe stands next to Bernie Ohls' desk as the inspector asks him to layoff the Sternwood case. The lamp on Bernie's' desk is tilted at a 45 degree angle. No one goes near it, but as Marlowe leaves the lamp is facing down towards the desk. (01:19:00 - 01:20:30)

Continuity mistake: The grave diggers are covering Bela Lugosi's wife's grave in broad daylight. In the next shot when Vampira comes walking out it's in the middle of the night. (00:06:20)

Continuity mistake: Marlowe sits down as Eddie Mars' pours him a drink. The back of his chair is touching the desk in all of the shots except the last one as Marlowe gets up to leave and we see the chair now about six inches away from the desk. (01:09:20)

Continuity mistake: After driving home from Eddie Mars place Marlowe walks into his apartment and Carmen is there waiting for him. After he says, "come on Carmen, come on" she grabs his hand with both of hers and bites him. In the next shot she's holding him with only her left hand. (01:18:10)

Continuity mistake: Eddie Mars walks out to okay Lauren Bacall's bet and the lady sitting to the right of the croupier moves her left hand to put a chip on number 27 twice between shots. (01:11:35)

Continuity mistake: After speaking to Lauren Bacall on a restaurant pay phone, two thugs jump Marlowe as he walks past an alley on his way back to his car. As the thug on the left throws a punch at him his fist doesn't even go near Marlowe's face. (01:23:00)
