The Prestige (2006)

Corrected entry: During the first trial scene Cutter states that he witnessed Borden simply "watching Mr. Angier drown". It is clear, however, that Cutter witnessed Borden trying to save Angier from drowning as he is seen in the background when Borden is attempting to smash the glass tank.

Correction: Borden didn't react immediately when he saw Angier drowning - he was shocked and took a few seconds before reaching for the axe. Cutter might think Borden reacted only after noticing him.

Correction: By definition, lace gloves do not offer full coverage of the hand and fingers. Heather would have left easily-identifiable partial prints all over.

My Girl (1991)

Corrected entry: Vada is going to bed and her dad is talking to her in her room. He tells her that the first thing her mother did when she found out she was pregnant with Vada was to come home and paint this room (Vada's bedroom) pink. The room is not painted pink, it is wallpapered in pink wallpaper with a tiny pattern of some sort in it.

Correction: Nine years have passed since Vada's mother learned she was pregnant. No wonder the room was redecorated during that time. Her dad just stuck to the pink scheme when he picked the wallpaper.

300 (2006)

Corrected entry: When the Spartans are watching the Persian ships being destroyed by the wind/waves you see Leonidas holding his shield up to protect himself from the rain. The rain is blowing toward him from his left as though driven by the wind, but his cape is not moving. The "rain" is sprayed on an angle not pushed by wind.

Correction: The capes are made of very heavy fabric. Once wet, that amount of wind couldn't move them.

Show generally

Corrected entry: When Lizzie and Charlotte Lucas return home from their visit to Rosings Park, they are riding in a public stagecoach. But in both the text (Ch. 37-38) and the movie dialogue, they travel post, which is a completely different thing. A post-chaise, even if hired, is private; on the stage coach (which is not a chaise), the young ladies must share the interior of the coach with strangers. This was not done by ladies of their class except in extraordinary circumstances, none of which are mentioned in the text or the movie dialogue.

Correction: It might not be much of a treat, but it's still a free ride to London.

300 (2006)

Corrected entry: At one point of the movie, a Spartan complains about Persians using arrows, as it's quite cowardly to kill your opponent from a distance. Yet, before the first big battle a Persian asks the Spartans to lay down their weapons, only to be killed by a spear thrown at him. Are Spartans applying double standards here?

Correction: A spear can't be thrown from as far as arrows can. You are still somewhat "face-to-face" with your opponent, whereas arrows can be sent from a cover. No double-standard there.

My Name Is Earl (2005)

Correction: Not really a mistake.

Living Doll - S7-E24

Corrected entry: Brass and Grissom go to see Trevor Dell, one of the Dell foster children. Foster children do not take the last name of the Foster Family unless they are adopted, and they never adopted any of the 13 Foster Children.

Boobra

Correction: It's entirely possible that they shared the same last name without being related. Dell isn't that unusual.

Correction: He says Benny, not Vinny.

The Prestige (2006)

Corrected entry: The use of Angier and Borden as plants for the water tank trick at the beginning makes no sense; they never wear any kind of disguise (except changing their clothes), so all it would take for the technique of the trick to become known would be for someone to see the show more than once, which would doubtless happen at some point.

Correction: They didn't wear any disguise that time, but that doesn't mean they always do so.

Anastasia (1997)

Corrected entry: When Anastasia follows Pooka on a fallen log on the way to St Petersburg, she places her hand on a tree covered with snow. When she lets go, the snow is still in perfect condition as if she never touched it.

Correction: Snow isn't always soft and fluffy. Often, it gradually turns into a hardened mass, thanks to variations in temperature, even though it still looks fresh. It would not be unusual to see such snow in northern Russia.

Corrected entry: When the Dementors are boarding the train, everything starts to go cold, so much so that the water on the windows starts to freeze, and even more noticeably the water in the bottle completely freezes. Once the Dementors have gone, the windows are completely free from ice and the water in the bottle has melted again. This is not possible in the short space of time that passed.

Scrappy

Correction: Neither water nor windows can freeze that fast either. Dementors are magic creatures, and have magical effects on their surroundings.

Before Sunrise (1995)

Corrected entry: When they're in the record store, there is not a single album printed in German. One would expect to find some English language pressings in a store in Vienna, but not every single one of them.

Correction: Most records store with multiple language offerings don't mix those albums. Each language gets its own section, so the English section would only have albums in English.

Lady in the Water (2006)

Corrected entry: When Cleveland hears splashing in the pool the first time, he opens the door and holds a flashlight in front to see. The shot is of the light out of the door, it is very obvious that it is raining, as it can be seen with the light. However, the next shot is of the outside and its obviously not raining. nor was it raining before any other shots.

Correction: It wasn't rain; it was the lawn sprinklers. Sprinklers go off and on.

Corrected entry: The chandelier is gaslight. When it breaks off and falls from the ceiling, the gas should have been disconnected. Instead of burning brightly all the way to the floor and starting a fire, it should have gone out and plunged the theatre into darkness. This is what happened in the real Paris Opera house, in the original book, and on the Broadway version. Only in the movie is the chandelier capable of starting a fire after being disconnected.

Correction: Nowhere in the movie does it say (or show) that it's a gaslight chandelier (only the stage lights are shown to be gas-powered). In fact, it very much looks like candlelight all over. A candlelight chandelier would act just as it did in the movie, setting everything on fire.

Other mistake: Bridget has a large, fabulous flat in what another mistake contribution has identified as a trendy area of London - just around the corner from Borough Market - and there's no way she could afford it on her salary of assistant at a publisher's office. Her parents are ordinary, middle class folk; there is no way they could afford the £2000+ per month rent on a huge flat like Bridget's, and there is no indication that they are doing so.

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: Who says she pays for it herself? Her parents are rather well off. Surely they can help her afford a decent flat.

Sereenie

From where do you get the idea that her parents are wealthy? They are ordinary middle class country folk. A flat like Bridget's would cost the 2024 equivalent of about £2,700 a month - about £1700 at 2001 prices. That is well beyond the visible means of her parents.

Making up deus ex machina explanations for blatant mistakes does not invalidate them. Bridget's parents are ordinary, middle class country folk. The thought that they could subsidize their daughter to the tune of £2000+ a month is laughable. The posting is absolutely correct.

National Treasure (2004)

Corrected entry: When Ben is carving out the brick with his knife at the Liberty Bell sequence, he somehow is able to carve into cement like it was clay. You can even tell it wasn't cement because it didn't crumble right away. It had more of a cutting look to it.

Correction: The brick was set in a way to make it easy to get it out. It's no biggie replacing the mortar with another substance that simulates it (so as to remain undetected for as long as necessary) while being easy to remove. In addition, over time the binding agent in mortar leaches out, and the remaining substance is actually very easy to scrape out.

The Mummy (1999)

Corrected entry: When Imhotep corners Beni against a wall, Beni starts chanting random prayers hoping one would stop Imhotep. When he does and Imhotep says he can be used and the rewards will be great, he pulls out a handful of gold. Where did the gold come from? He's supposed to be a freshly awoken mummy.

Correction: He's a dead man come back to life with incredible evil powers. Who knows what he can or can't make appear?

National Treasure (2004)

Corrected entry: Dr. Chase gets the invisible ink on her hands from the campaign button Gates sent her. Several hours later, she attends a gala and leaves her nice and clear fingerprints in the invisible ink on her glass, where Gates retrieves them. Time has passed, and she has dressed up and gotten ready for a gala event - and she has not washed her hands even once?

Twotall

Correction: The invisible ink was not meant for him to take her fingerprints at all, but to figure out what is her password to access the preservation room. He doesn't need any sort of ink to take her fingerprints - just the superheated Crazy Glue and the Ziploc bag which he uses in the restroom. The fact that she showered has no bearing on that, because she went down to the vault and entered her password much earlier in the day, soon after getting the button from Gates.

Corrected entry: When Evey goes back to V's house to dance on November 4th, she still has the bruise and cut from being hit with the gun a year before.

Matt Lynch

Correction: She does not. She only has a scar.
