Corrected entry: It is shown that the monkey still has a reaction to being shot, as it is thrown forward the first time it is shot. However later, when Captain Jack demonstrates to Tia that it is undead, it has almost no reaction except for backing away from the shot. When Captain Jack actually shoots it, nothing happens and he couldn't have misssed from that range.
Corrected entry: When Will is first walking around on the cannibal island and he finds Gibbs' flask connected to the string, which he later follows, he drops the flask on the ground (we can hear it hitting the ground). However, when Will is in the bone cage with Gibbs and the other crew members, Gibbs is seen holding his flask in his hand.
Correction: Will thinks it belongs to Gibbs but it is just a basic black flask with nothing on it to identify it as Gibbs' flask. As such it could have belonged to anyone and Will just associated it with Gibbs because he just came from the beached Pearl.
Corrected entry: In the movie, black powder (gunpowder) is detonated by firing a musketball into it; however, black powder detonates at approximately 320C(600F), while bullet temperature has been measured at only 267C shortly after leaving the barrel, not enough to ignite the powder. Correction: Actually, if you watch closely, the musketball strikes the metal rim of the barrel, sending a shower of sparks into the spilling rum/black powder mixture, causing ignition.
Corrected entry: The huge map in the background of the governor's office (or whoever he was) showed things that were completely unknown at the time: the system of rivers and lakes in Africa that flow into the Nile was not explored and mapped until 150 years later. The coast of Antarctica is shown at the bottom of the map - that was totally unknown at the time, and if I recall correctly, Australia was shown. Only parts of the east coast of Australia had been explored at the time. The west coast was totally unknown at the time.
Correction: The headwaters of the Blue Nile were known in the 15th century but were unknown to be part of the Nile until 1770 when they were found to be. Antarctica, although officially 'discovered' in 1820, a large landmass is shown on maps of the time based upon information from explorers like Ferdinand Magellan in 1578 or Dirck Gerritsz in 1622. Both found islands in that area which cartographers worked upon naming the continent 'Terra Australis Incognita'. The West coast of Australia was discovered by Dirk Hartog in 1616 with the East coast being explored near the end of the 1700's.
Corrected entry: At the beginning of the movie, the characters are singing "Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest". However, Robert Louis Stevenson did not write that little ditty until 1883 ("Treasure Island"), long after the movie takes place.
Correction: It's believed that Stevenson may have based his work on a pre-existing song. Apparently that's the case in the POTC reality.
Corrected entry: The Granny Smith apple originated in Australia around 1865, was introduced to England in 1935, and then to the United States around 1972. The Golden Age of Piracy is generally believed to be about 1520 to 1790. It would certainly seem that the green Granny Smith apple in this case was a bit ahead of its time.
Correction: It wasn't necessarily a Granny Smith. The Granny Smith isn't the only green apple out there. Plenty of other varieties of green apples were around during that time period.
Corrected entry: After Jack falls through the rope bridges escaping the cannibals, the fruits and vegetables falling along him don't break or splatter on the ground.
Correction: The ground is pretty soft (Jack fell on it and didn't break anything) and the fruits and vegetables are pretty tough so it probably wouldn't have caused them to break or splatter.
Corrected entry: In the scene where the natives are chasing the dog along the beach, the dog is running through an area with no footprints (you can tell because he leaves a trail of new ones). This should not be the case, as a large group of the natives ran over that area less than a minute earlier.
Correction: The waves washed them away.
Corrected entry: In the scene towards the end when Jack takes Davy Jones' beating heart and sticks it into his jar of dirt, he takes a lot of dirt out of the jar causing it to look very messy, but later on in the movie when we see Jack again with the jar in his hands about to bargain with Davy Jones, the jar has the same amount of dirt as it did before and it is very clean.
Correction: It is likely that Norrington, upon seeing the pile of dirt on the seat in the boat, scooped it back into the jar as he was removing the heart. He knows Jack is clever and may notice a change in weight and/or volume. As to the cleanliness of the jar: a lot of time passes between those two shots in which Jack could easily have dusted the jar off.
Corrected entry: In the scene when the Flying Dutchman makes an appearance, one of the Black Pearl's crewman shouts, "Mother Carrie's Chickens!" Why the weird expletive? It's a very sly and totally obscure reference to a Disney film from the 60's, "The Barefoot Executive" starring Kurt Russell. "Mother Carrie's Chickens" was the name of a TV program that was rated 1 and dumbfounded Russell's character since the show was picked by a chimpanzee.
Correction: "Mother Carrie's Chickens" is also a seaman's nickname for the storm petrel, a common seabird.
Corrected entry: When the Turks find Jack's hat, the Kraken eats their ship very quickly, without even showing its tentacles, but from then on, it takes its time, showing the tentacles, ripping masts off, and generally giving the main characters time to get away.
Correction: Character decision by the Kraken - it chose to destroy the Turkish ship quickly. Perhaps it had received different instructions from Davy Jones, or perhaps it was simply hungry the first time.
Corrected entry: In the scene when Pintel and Ragetti are rowing towards the island, the dog (from the prison) is sitting in the bow of the boat, holding the prison keys in his mouth. During a shot of the two pirates, you hear a dog bark, but during the next shot, the dog is holding the keys in his mouth again. Since he's in the front, the keys should've dropped in the water.
Correction: Dogs can bark with stuff in their mouth. I know a dog which can bark with 3 balls in his mouth. Barking with just a big ring in the mouth is much easier.
Corrected entry: After all of the fruit on Jack's pole slid to the bottom, causing him to fall down the deep gorge, there is a clear shot of water at the bottom of the ravine, however, when he reaches the bottom, he hits land.
Correction: No, you see alot trees from above (you can see in another shot that there is infact land beneath Jack).
Corrected entry: When Elizabeth chains Jack to the Black Pearl, his hand doesn't have the bandage covering the black spot from Davey Jones. In the next shot, when Jack looks down at his hand, the bandage is back.
Correction: The bandage is the whole time present.
Corrected entry: In the scene with the 'haunted dress', when the lantern is knocked down, you see the fire spreading into the word 'Tortuga.' It goes straight from the 'T' to the 'o', so those two letters are connected. But then in the shot after Elizabeth points out that is says 'Tortuga', all of the letters are separate.
Correction: Since the vapors are what burn, they could have burnt themselves out. Also, when there are spots of flammable liquid NEAR each other, it can travel since again, the vapors are what burn.
Corrected entry: When the ship with the superstitious guys gets attacked by the Kraken, and Will needs to jump onto the second mast, he uses his father's knife and cuts a long tear into the second sail. In the shots where the camera is behind the sail, showing the silhouette of Will sliding down the other side, you can see through the long cut in the sail that there is no other sail or mast on the other side where Will jumped from. There is only blue sky.
Correction: The mast that Will jumped from was falling at the time he jumped. The reason you don't see it in the following shot is because it has likely already fallen from view by then.
Corrected entry: When everyone is going upriver to visit Tia Dalma, one of the shots shows an iguana, which snaps up a firefly, even though iguanas are vegetarians and do not eat insects.
Correction: Not true. I have an iguana, and from time-to-time, she does eat meal worms and pinky mice.
Corrected entry: In the scene with the sword fight on the wheel, the first time Jack Sparrow runs inside the wheel, he hits his head on a metal bar and falls outside of the wheel. He gets back inside the wheel, running again, and the metal bars are gone.
Correction: They are not gone. The bars are above his head, spinning with the axle.
Corrected entry: In the first film the P burned into Jack's arm is on the underside of his wrist, seen when Commander Norrington grabs his arm. in this film it is seen on the top of his wrist while he is writing.
Correction: It's on top of his wrist in the first film.
Corrected entry: Although the Aztec curse was lifted in the previous movie, thus making all the previously afflicted pirates 'normal' again, the monkey remains cursed without apparent reason throughout the second film.
Correction: The monkey was inside a cage. After it backed away from Jack's gun, it was against the bars of the cage. So there was nowhere for the monkey to be "thrown" by the force of the shot.
