Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After Jack opens the lid of the large chest, there is a close-up of the filled interior, which lies nearly a foot below the top edge of the large chest, with the smaller inner chest well hidden below. However, in the next shot the lid of the smaller inner chest is way up higher, actually level with the top edge of the large chest - before Jack lifts it. (01:41:20)

Revealing mistake: Elizabeth says."Oh the heat." You can see the exact spot where she is going to fake faint, from previous takes. (01:44:35)

Continuity mistake: In the scene when Captain Sparrow, Elizabeth, and Norrington dig up the chest and open it, we can see that there are documents filling the chest all the way to the top. The shot changes, and now you can see that there are fewer documents in the chest, even though they haven't started pulling them out yet. (01:45:05)

Audio problem: Just as the waterwheel begins to roll away from the mill, watch Will and Norrington on top of it - the sounds of their swords clashing doesn't synch up with their actions. (01:47:30)

Visible crew/equipment: While Norrington and Will begin their duel, Jack walks away and promptly falls into the open grave. In the shot of Jack from within the grave, the imprint of a modern, flat bottom trainer/sneaker sole can be seen on the dirt wall (yes, wall) to Jack's left. It is not the imprint of a shoe of the time period. (01:48:00)

Continuity mistake: When Norrington, Jack and Will bang away at each other on the beach, in the shot facing Elizabeth as she puts her hat back on, behind her Ragetti runs ahead of Pintel (3-4 ft) as they steal the chest. Next shot, it is Pintel in the lead as they run off. (01:49:00)

Continuity mistake: During the three way fight for the key, Will uses the bell rope to grab the key from Norrington. A couple of minutes later, while they are fighting on the roof, Jack sneaks up behind them and tries to snatch it from Norrington, despite already having taken it. (01:49:00 - 01:51:00)

Suggested correction: Norrington takes it back from Will during their fight on the roof (not seen but possible), only then Jack tries to take it again.

Continuity mistake: When Jack knocks the pirate's detachable head off with the coconut, the chest drops with the lock facing the ground and the lid's two hinges facing up. However, when Jack reaches the chest, it is the lock's side actually facing up now, before he turns the chest upright - with the lock facing him. (01:50:00)

Other mistake: When Jack and Norrington duel on the stairway of the old church (before Will joins the fun), just as Norrington grabs hold of the key with his left hand, a band-aid is visible on Norrington's thumb. (01:50:00)

Continuity mistake: After Jack takes the heart out of the chest he hurriedly closes its lid, the locks engage, and the key's end remains in the horizontal position when Jack runs off. However, when Pintel and Ragetti grab the chest the key's circular end is now vertical - the key does not turn itself. (01:51:00)

Answer: The jar was to put Davy Jones heart in. He can't touch dirt ever again since he failed to keep up his duties which means he wouldn't be able to get his heart back.

Chosen answer: Davy Jones cannot set foot on land for ten more years. The jar of dirt is to represent land. Jack carries it with him so that he always has land with him so Davy Jones won't be able to get near him, or so Jack is supposed to believe.
