The Full Monty (1997)

Question: Why does the alarm go off when Dave puts the Pick-n-Mix in his mouth and then stop when he steps on it?

Answer: It's a sight gag. Dave's essentially stealing the candy, so the alarm goes off. When he crushes it, the alarm stops. It wouldn't really happen, but it's funny that the alarm stops when he removes the candy.

Love Actually (2003)

Question: Is the mother or daughter who sing "All I Want for Christmas" at the Christmas pageant an actual singer? The way the teacher introduced the mother who helped put the number together, he made it sound as though she was a well-known musician, so I wondered if that was true.

Answer: Ruby Turner, playing Mrs Anderson is an accomplished singer. She started with Culture Club in the mid-80s and then went solo. Olivia Olson, playing Joanna, is also a singer. She won on Star Search and as far as I know has only released two songs. As for whether the Mom is supposed to be a real singer in the film, it's not made clear.

ChiChi

Answer: The staffer introducing the concert says "and background vocals coordinated by the great Mrs. Jean Anderson." While not explicitly stated in the film, and he could potentially mean that she is well-known in another field, or that she just did a great job with the concert, it certainly sounded to me that the character of Joanna's mom is intended to be a well-known singer.

General questions

For all you filmsleuths - Does anyone know what this film is called? It is about a little girl who is deaf. The film is in black and white and the only bit I can remember is her being shouted at and not being able to hear. Very vague I'm afraid.

Sarah Davis

Chosen answer: In the first scene of "The Miracle Worker" (1962), Helen Keller's parents discover she's deaf and blind when they clap and shout at her in her crib. There are two other films with the same plot. Johnny Belinda (1948) starring Jane Wyman and Lew Aryes. A girl living in backwoods rural community, has everyone believing she is dumb. She grows up a wild child, Aryes plays a teacher who realises her condition and teaches her how to sign. The other is the Story of Esther Costello, a young girl is rendered deaf and mute by an accident. Joan Crawford plays a wealthy woman who takes pity on her and takes to the big city to educate her. Both are soap opera dramas.

I love the song 'I've Got A Name' by Jim Croce and am sure I've heard it in a movie or on a movie soundtrack. Could anyone please help me in locating said movie?

Question: After Eamon and the children have gone to the basement of the farmhouse, Marie makes some exclamation that sounds like Chinese. What is that?

scwilliam

Answer: It is a stronger form of "Darn it", or Damn it". The word "nochmal" here can not be translated literally but merely serves as reinforcement, and does not mean "again". In British English the term "Bloody Hell" hits it most closely.

Chosen answer: The phrase is "Verdammt noch Mal", meaning 'Condemned again.'

Titanic (1997)

Question: After Rose has said about Dr Freud, she goes outside to the edge of the deck. Later, Cal comes outside and says something to Rose that you can just hear. What does Cal say to Rose?

Answer: When Cal grabs Rose's arm she says, "Do you mind?" Cal responds with, "I hope you're proud of this."

ChiChi

What does that mean "hope you're proud of this"?

I think that means that Rose has embarrassed Cal and Ruth in front of Ismay and Andrews. The fact that Rose knows who Freud is and Ismay doesn't shows that as a woman in those times Rose seems to know more than she's "allowed" to know. Hence why Cal says to Molly something like "I might have to start minding what Rose reads from now on."

Just to add: by embarrassing Cal, it could seriously have influenced peoples perception of him as a man in those times. By being shown up, it gives the impression his woman is not 100% loyal to him.

Question: I never understood the significance of the girl in the wheelchair at the reunion. Peggy Sue makes a big deal out of the girl but never in her "flashback" do we see this character.

Jeanne Perrotta

Chosen answer: In the original script, Rosalie (the girl in the wheelchair) injures herself in an accident. Peggy Sue tries to change things that happen in the future, including Rosalie's accident.

ChiChi

Answer: You DO see Rosalie in the past. She hosts the party at which Charlie and his group sing. And Jim Carrey asks for the lights to be turned out. She walks, and begins to dance with her boyfriend.

No, that was Maddie's party. Peggy Sue's mom said so when she asked her why she wasn't ready for the party, when Charlie came to pick her up.

I finally see her, thanks! She's to the left of Peggy Sue and her girlfriends as they watch Charlie and the guys sing. Then she's the girl dancing on the counter at the coffee shop when Peggy Sue meets with Michael Fitzsimmons the first time. I always wondered about the Rosalie plot hole.

I think we DO see Rosalie before her accident-she is the girl dancing on the counter at the coffee shop when Peggy Sue goes for coffee and a donut and runs into Michael Fitzsimmons. Peggy Sue pauses and watches her for a moment.

Memento (2000)

Question: How do I access the easter egg on the DVD?

Answer: From the disc's main menu, go to the 'Special Features.' Here, select the entry 'Memento' and you will get to a newspaper page featuring select words that slowly fade in and out. Highlighting each fading word takes you to another part of the original website. However, if you move over to the word 'Questions' in the title of the article - it barely fades in and out - you'll see that there's scribbled underlining there. Click and you'll see a scrap of paper reading: 'who did I kill?' Click the arrow that leads to the right and you'll be taken to a list of names. Click almost any name and you'll get sent back to the article. However, if you click the name 'Teddy' you'll be taken to a credits screen for the people who worked on the DVD. http://www.dvdreview.com/eastereggs/collect/296.html.
