Ben-Hur (1959)

Ben-Hur mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Right before the chariot race, when Sheik Ilderim is standing at Judah's right side and tells Judah, "Be careful, don't let him near you," Judah places his hand on the Sheik's forearm as the fanfare starts. Then it cuts to a long shot, with the Sheik now suddenly on Judah's left side, and Judah removing his hand from the Sheik's forearm.

Suggested correction: The sheik actually moves around the chariot to the right side. No continuity error.

You can't assume that the sheik moves. It's not shown and the shots are so quick in succession the sheik didn't have time to move.

ChiChi

Oh, but actually, there is indeed a continuity error, and it occurs between shots. Sheik Ilderim is standing on one side of the chariot, then in the very next shot he is standing on the other side of the chariot. The suggested correction is wrong.

Question: What are the nuns doing to Marie de Tourvel when she is sick? What possible benefit did they feel it would have?

ChiChi

Chosen answer: It looked to me like they were performing what is known as "cupping". "Cupping" is a branch of Chinese medicine where a cup (often heated, the so-called "fire cupping") is used to create a vacuum on certain areas of the skin, to simulate acupressure. It is said to relieve respiratory problems and muscular pains ad to stimulate the flow of life energy in the patient. How these French nuns came to know of and approve of the technique is another matter..

The Piano (1993)

Continuity mistake: When Stewart discovers Ada tried to send a message to Baines and bursts into the house, the view from inside the house shows a clear day outside. When he drags her out, it's now raining heavily.

ChiChi

Suggested correction: It starts to rain when he is coming back home, you can see the water and hear it. And it was not a clear day, it was morning and there was no sign of sun because the sky was grey.

Cold Mountain (2003)

Question: Why does Bosie's (blonde Home Guard) nose bleed whenever there's shooting going on? It happens when he's at the Swanger's house and shoots the sons and again at the end when there's the big shootout with Inman.

ChiChi

Chosen answer: Bosie is an Albino. One of the symtoms of Albinism (but only a very rare type) is unsusal bleeding which might include frequent nose bleeds. Gunfights clearly bring these on in him.

Must've been what kept him out of the army, I was wondering.

Bonnie and Clyde (1967)

Continuity mistake: In the first few minutes of the movie, when Bonnie first goes out to meet Clyde, she 'clomps' down the stairs in obviously hard, heeled shoes. A few minutes later, as they're walking, she's now wearing soft, flat shoes.

Jurassic Park III (2001)

Continuity mistake: When Dr. Grant is holding the camera bag out the window in order to drop the eggs and get rid of them, the strap for the bag is hanging loosely. The shot changes to behind him and now the strap is bundled up into the fist holding the bag.

Scrooged (1988)

Factual error: The address on Claire's business card reads 514 West 43rd St. When Frank gets there, the street sign is for 3rd St./900 East block. The sign on the building reads "9th Street Temporary Shelter". Along with these discrepancies, taking into consideration that 3rd St. may be the cross street, WEST 43rd would not cross 3rd St. EAST, as they are on opposites sides of Manhattan. Even if the '4' on the sign for 43rd St. were somehow obliterated, 514 still would not be on the 900 East block. (00:53:10 - 00:54:15)

House of Games (1987)

Continuity mistake: When Margaret is getting rid of the evidence of Billy Hahn visiting her, she crumples up the papers in his file and tosses them onto the file. The next shot showing her getting her gun out of the drawer, the paper is gone, then a different angle shows the large crumpled wad again, then again, a new angle shows an even bigger crumpled wad.

Being There (1979)

Double Jeopardy (1999)

Factual error: When Libby tries to call the friend's house back after the 'resurrected' husband yanks the phone out of the wall, the tone she gets is fast beeping. That sound is the tone used when your phone hasn't been hung up properly. She should hear a ringing tone on her end since the phone she's calling is still in service.

Matchstick Men (2003)

Question: How can Roy possibly be a smoker? He has OCD and is constantly cleaning the smallest of messes. The ashtray in his car was overflowing with butts.

ChiChi

Chosen answer: OCD isn't about cleanliness, it's about obsession and compulsion (hence the name). Cleaning could be a compulsion in this case, though smoking could be as well (and probably is, with the amount of butts in the ashtray). If that's the case then the cleaning probably wouldn't apply to the ashtray, since all he'd be doing is smoking and cleaning it, which would limit his actions even further. It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the basics.

Flatliners (1990)

Question: When David drives up to see Winnie to apologize for his childhood behaviour, he drives up to the house through what looks like the woods. Does anyone know that area of IL (Bensonville) and why there would be no formal road leading to Winnie's house?

ChiChi

Chosen answer: I don't know the area, but there is nothing unusual about a dirt road leading to a house, both my wife's parents and her brother have a long dirt road that leads to the house from a major road. It's common as the city or county doesn't usually have the budget to pave/maintain roads out past the city limits.

That Thing You Do (1996)

Factual error: When the boys go to the radio show in CA, the DJ says to the listeners to keep Saturday and Sunday, August 20th and 21st [1964] open. The 20th and 21st of August 1964 were a Thursday and a Friday.

The Mummy (1999)

Question: No matter how many times I watch this, I don't count all 10 plagues. Do some end up on the cutting room floor?

ChiChi

Answer: The featured Plagues are: locusts, flies, water turning into blood, fiery hail, the sun turning black, boils and sores. The missing Plagues are: cattle disease, wild beasts, frogs, and death of the first-born sons.

Chosen answer: The plagues stop when they 'destroy' the mummy's powers. The good guys are trying to stop the mummy before the death of the first-born plauge (which they suceed in doing, as Jonathan survives the movie), as well as preventing the mummy from becoming all powerful and impossible to destroy - which would happen after the tenth plague. Some of the plagues, too, could have been happening while the good guys are in Hamunaptra and therefore not experiencing them themselves, bringing the total of plagues experienced by the outside world closer to nine.
