Joe vs the volcano is a fairy tale that explores the adventure of life. It is a call to adventure that follows a simple man who for reasons that he doesn't understand, finds himself fighting the banality of life in a Hero's journey on the other side of the world facing death. It is a lot like Forrest Gump, but without the boomer nostalgia. It is like Peter Sellers' "Being There" without the hippieness.

It is childlike, and naive, and in all honesty the humor and plot seem to fall apart at times, but I find it charming. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan play their roles in a child like simplicity and their chemistry pulls me through. Still one of my favorite movies, for no good reason.

Continuity mistake: When DeDe walks into Joe's apartment at the end of their date, she places her handbag on the floor a few steps across from the door. When she comes back in to get the bag because she forgot it after she leaves, she reaches for the bag just inside the door.
