Mistake Factual error: In the scene where the crew members are doing a simultaneous countdown in Russian and in English, the Russian crewmember skips the number four (chetiri). She goes straight from 5 (pyat) to three (tree).

Mistake Continuity: Toward the end of the chat in front of the white house, in a far shot, Dr Floyd crosses his legs. The camera comes in for a close-up and he crosses his legs again.

Mistake Continuity: During the "aero-braking" maneuver the force dislodges a photo from Dr. Floyd's wall and stretches his face indicating many Gs. Similarly, the cockpit crew is thrown back into their seats, yet their flimsy microphone headsets are never dislodged from their heads.

Mistake Factual error: The alien intelligence behind the monoliths may be good at sending trite little messages of peace love and happiness, but they have just condemned the human race to extinction, along with every living thing on our planet. They change the solar system to a binary star system, which will inevitably alter the Earth's orbit. This will cause earthquakes that would make the planet uninhabitable, and the climate changes will finish off the few survivors. Turning Jupiter into a star capable of sustaining life will involve somewhow increasing its mass by approximately two hundred and fifty times. Jupiter simply isn't massive enough to become even a small, cold star (known as a brown dwarf) by itself. Using super-dense netron matter won't work: super dense matter is super heavy, that's the whole point. If you don't hugely increase Jupiter's mass it cannot become a sun.

Mistake Continuity: At one point when Chadra is repairing HAL, HAL starts speaking gibberish. When HAL starts doing this there are 8 blocks sticking out from the floor, but when Chandra stops HAL there are only 4 left.

Mistake Other: After speaking with Dave Bowman on her TV, Betty lays her head on the table and we see an obvious cut & paste as her form shifts slightly.

Mistake Factual error: For aerobraking to work, the ship must enter the upper atmosphere of Jupiter. At no time does the ship come close enough to Jupiter to cause the friction needed to portray the flaming ball shown in the movie.
