Hereditary is a supernatural horror film about a very dysfunctional family with a disturbed daughter and some awful family secrets. With nods to films like Carrie, Rosemary's Baby, and 1970s classic Italian horror, the tension ramps up as possessions, decapitations and demon worship all combine towards a gruesome and macabre finale. While this movie may not be up to everyone's taste, it's a wild and weird ride that's not easy to forget once the credits roll.

I rented this movie at RedBox.

Honestly, this type of movie just isn't my cup of tea. I don't mind a suspense thriller here and there, and I do like a few horror films. When it's packed on constantly as hard as this film does it just bogs me down. I'm also really not too comfortable with all the satanic stuff that films like this have, but that's just me.

That being said, this film actually did a really good job at what it was doing. I found myself following along and staying with it regardless. It was well written and the acting was good for the most part. Some of the scenes with the child actors weren't so great, but mostly it was good. I don't really have much bad to say about other than the story itself and the ending are really not stuff I like. But it was done so good that I have to give it a higher rating at least.

Mistake Status: I struggled to find any while watching it the first time. Some of the ones I found I had to get from IMDb. I have no plans to watch this movie in the future so no more mistakes from me.

Audio problem: As Annie is trying to leave Joan's house and she starts to give Annie instructions on how to do the ritual, it's obvious the audio for Joan's lines was dubbed in in post as a lot of her speech doesn't quite match up with her lips. Especially when she's saying "Your whole family needs to be in the house". (01:08:00)

Annie: It's heartening to see so many strange, new faces here today. I know my mom would be very touched, and probably a little suspicious. (00:04:00)

Trivia: The voice on the phone from the agent calling Annie discussing her exhibit date at the Archer Gallery is that of the film's director, Ari Aster.

Question: After Peter is possessed by Charlie and he clicks his tongue for the first time after standing up, he starts to walk towards the tree house and heads off screen. The camera lingers though, and focuses in on something lying on the ground in the background. What is that on the ground? It almost looks like a dead dog or possibly the dead dear from earlier, but the shape isn't quite right. It does appear to be some sort of animal but I can't make it out. What is that the camera lingered on right then? And why? It's not shown again. (01:57:45)

Answer: Earlier in the film, Peter swerves the car to avoid hitting a dead animal in the road, resulting in Charlie's decapitation. That animal appears to be a goat (a ram) with slightly curled horns. Within the context of this movie, this is probably a Sabbatic Goat, alluding to Occult symbolism associated with the Mystic Pentagram and the Satanic deity Baphomet. The implication is that Satanic forces caused Peter to swerve off the road, killing Charlie in preparation for migrating her soul into Peter. The dead animal seen in the background at the end appears to be the Sabbatic Goat again, marking completion of Charlie's soul migration into Peter.

Charles Austin Miller

Answer: I think it's the family dog. The cult members probably killed it to keep it from interfering with their plans.
