Ocean's Eleven (2001)

Question: Who is Terry Benedict talking to when he goes down to the vault to inspect the scene? Is it Rusty? And how does he not notice the swat members carrying duffel bags stuffed with $150 million?

sdk389

Answer: He is talking to Rusty. Even if Rusty didn't have his mask down, he hadn't seen Rusty before and therefore would not know to be suspicious of him. The SWAT team came down with their duffel bags fully packed and left with them fully packed.

Greg Dwyer

Answer: There's a plethora of reasons, as others have said. This film had a relatively large budget (projected between $200-$290 million depending on the source), but was the lowest-grossing film of the franchise, bringing in only about $700 million worldwide when it was expected to be a potential billion-dollar film. Critical reception was lukewarm at best, and fan-reception was very mixed, whereas most of the previous films were received very positively. (Even "Spider-Man 3" fared better in general with critics and fans.) Andrew Garfield was having issues with the studio and executives, and rumor has it that he was possibly going to be fired after showing signs of disrespect towards Sony. (In part because Garfield had serious issues with them for interfering with the production of both "Amazing Spider-Man" films and making demands/undermining the story to set-up future films.) There were already a lot of issues building up behind the scenes because Sony was hoping to use this film to set up about a half-dozen more sequels and spin-offs, and they panicked when it wasn't the huge hit they hoped for. Finally, talks began with Marvel/Disney after its release, and Sony opted to reboot and "share" the character with Disney so Spidey could join the MCU.

Answer: Reviews and box office returns weren't up to studio expectations. In addition, the director and Andrew Garfield both expressed not wanting to return to the series. Those, combined with talks to Marvel, resulted in the franchise stalling.

Greg Dwyer

Answer: Actually, the timeline is a bit more muddled, since serious talks with Marvel and Disney about the rights to Spider-Man didn't really take off until after this movie bellyflopped at the box office. That's when Marvel offered them the shared custody that ultimately resorted in Spider-Man:Homecoming, where it's Marvel that has the final say in the creative process.

Coco (2017)

Question: Why didn't the aunts just tell Miguel that Ernesto De La Cruz wasn't his grandfather when Miguel was rambling about it when he entered the Land of the Dead?

Answer: The aunts may not actually know. Because his ancestor hated him so much, she may have talked about him very little in both the real world and the afterlife.

Greg Dwyer

Answer: Because Miguel didn't unambiguously talk about his wrong assumption. In other words, he never said, "my grand-grandfather and Imelda's husband, Ernesto de la Cruz" (which is wrong). He only called him grand-grandfather and Imelda simply referred to him as a good-for-nothing musician. The aunts, uncles and the grandfather Julio all knew about Hector, as can be inferred from the reunion scene.

General questions

I remember a poignant scene in a (new-ish) movie where a dead person communicates with their living loved one by dropping all the blossoms off a tree all at once. I think pink blossoms, and it was perhaps as an answer to a question. What is the movie?

Answer: Sounds like a scene from "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra.

Greg Dwyer

Answer: Aside from the fact that Hermione is obviously a terrible liar and her dialogue is suspiciously inquisitive for someone who often buys and sells dark artifacts, wizards can use Legilimency to determine if someone is lying.

Greg Dwyer

Legilimency is a rare talent among wizards- only Snape and Voldemort are known to have practiced it openly in the books. It is more likely that Hermoine has no idea how to act like a bad person, let alone a Death Eater.

Bellatrix was using it. She apparently taught Occlumency to Draco - Snape guesses this during a conversation with Draco.

Question: When Marietta denied that there had been any other meetings, was that just to let her friends off? I don't see why she rats them out one minute and then tries to protect them the next.

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Answer: Because her memory was charmed by Kingsley Shacklebolt before she could.

Grease (1978)

Question: What do the T-Birds mean when they ask Rizzo "What are you doing out without a net/Annette?" Is it just another Annette Funicello reference? That always confused me.

Answer: He's referring to a safety net that acrobats would use because she's climbing down the trellis and it's dangerous.

Greg Dwyer

I always assumed they thought she needed 'a net' to catch a guy.

Answer: It is because she was climbing off the roof and down the trellis, and it was dangerous as she could have fallen and hurt herself. That is why they said she was doing that without a net.

Answer: I thought it referred to a hair net like one to cover curlers.

Answer: A net is what they used to call bras.

Answer: I thought it meant she needs a net to catch her and that she would fall.

Answer: Women wore hair nets to sleep to keep their curls in place - they are giving her crap for not wearing a hair net.

Dante's Peak (1997)

Question: I'm asking this because I don't really know a lot about volcanoes but, at the beginning of the movie, Harry was in the middle of a volcano eruption with: rain; rocks falling etc. When the volcano in Dante's Peak erupted, it was different from before, meaning that there was no rain (but ash), rivers strong enough to break a dam, burning water, dead wildlife etc. Even at the end of the movie, the volcano still had one more eruption before it finally died down. My question is, are all volcano eruptions not the same or are they just unpredictable when they explode? It just seems kind of odd that Harry was experiencing different things in nature after the volcano exploded. I hope I explained this enough; I'm just curious is all.

Answer: Volcanic eruptions can range from ash eruption to hot gas eruption to lava eruption to explosive eruption. Movies tend to inaccurately lump all of these eruptions together.

Charles Austin Miller

Answer: Volcanoes can differ because of type of volcano, type of eruption, and region. The Pacific Northwest has a history of volcanoes that erupt not lava, but rock, gas, and ash. Other regions (like Hawaii and Central Africa) erupt primarily lava. Age of the volcano is also a factor.

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

Question: What did Janice mean when she called the sharks "one second generation, and two first generation female", or something along those lines?

Answer: Or it's referring to different ways they modified them. The first generation were the first successful sharks. The second generation they did it slightly different.

Greg Dwyer

Answer: Same as family generations. Mum + Dad are 1st generation, Children are second generation, Grand kids 3rd generation etc.

Ssiscool

Answer: Prosecution by war crimes tribunals and a new start to the war.

Greg Dwyer

Answer: Because what they were doing is considered a war crime. Hard to get the world to support your cause when you are committing genocide.

What did the Serbs fear would happen if people found out what they were doing?

Question: What were the Serbians' motives for killing the citizens in Bosnia? Why did they hate them?

Answer: It was primarily religious and cultural difference. Serbians are primarily Orthodox Christian, Croatians are mostly Catholic, and Bosnians are majority Muslim.

Greg Dwyer

Question: Shouldn't Piquet have been punished for his bad attitude towards rescue missions, and for only caring about the peace treaty?

Answer: It's a matter of perspective. Piquet was interested in keeping the peace treaty, and therefore saving thousands of lives, more than he was interested in the two pilots.

Greg Dwyer

Why does piquet think sending a rescue a rescue mission would cause the peace treaty to collapse? The US military has sent hundreds of rescue missions, and not one of them has ever caused a peace treaty to collapse.

Robin Hood (1973)

Question: When Robin Hood jumps into the water near the end of the movie, how did he survive the guards shooting arrows at him? Going underwater doesn't protect you from getting hit by arrows. Arrows can go deeper underwater than bullets can since they have more mass, even though they don't go as fast.

Answer: An arrow may have more mass, but it is also far less dense. Both the shaft and the fletchings will float. As well, these are not full powered English longbows, but shortbows, designed to be used at close range and without the same penetrating power. You can see many videos on Youtube about how arrows will not go deep.

Shrek 2 (2004)

Question: I don't understand this, if Donkey's true love is the dragon, why did he turn into a steed instead?

Answer: He turned into a steed. The director said that she turned into a Pegasus.

Greg Dwyer

Answer: The potion says that both the one who drinks the potion and their true love will "be fine" So Donkey and Dragon were both changed. Although we don't see her until the end It is said that she turned in to a Pegasus.

Question: How did making contact with aliens bring an end to poverty, disease, and war? Even after the Third World War, there still would have been millions of people who wanted wars on earth, and they would find ways to commit attacks that would start wars on earth, and get away with it, by pretending to help bring an end to wars, poverty, and disease, by secretly stealing alien technology, and by attacking homes, and destroying replicators once every citizen on earth had one, and by telling the aliens to leave earth and never return, and they would have been no way to catch everyone who wanted wars on earth.

Answer: By realizing that humanity was not alone in the universe, it gave them hope and something new to strive for, leading to a change in behavior.

Greg Dwyer

Answer: The Vulcans introduced the human race to subspace scanner and transporter technology, enabling instantaneous communications, surveillance, deployment and security enforcement planet-wide. Thus, the vast majority of mankind's tribal squabbling was eliminated.

Question: General Veers was a badass and did not screw up at all on the assault on Hoth. Why promote Piett to Admiral and not Veers?

Answer: General Veers was part of the Imperial Army, hence his command of the ground troops. Piett and Ozzel were members of the Imperial Navy, hence their command of the ships.

Jurassic Park (1993)

Question: When the raptors were in the kitchen and one of them chased Tim into the freezer, how did its feet slip on the ground?

wolfpackalpha

Answer: Because there was ice on the ground.

Greg Dwyer

Answer: The island's power had been knocked out by the tropical storm causing the walk-in freezer's contents to melt and cover the floor with slushy water and ice chunks. Earlier, Ellie and Hammond were seen eating the melting ice cream.

raywest

Answer: The ground was visibly covered in ice. One possible scenario is that the people in the kitchens were in a hurry to get to the boat, so they dropped the ice by accident and just left it there.
