Originally the pistol handed to Villefort was loaded and Villefort killed himself with it. But it was changed when some people who were at a private screening of the movie suggested that it would be better if Villefort was forced to go to prison and suffer as Edmond had.
The director originally wanted one of the main characters to die at the end of the movie to show that revenge doesn't always pay.
