The Shining (1980) - 297 mistakes

Revealing: In the first scene, when Nicholson is driving to the Overlook, the shadow of a helicopter can be seen at the bottom right. This is only visible in the un-matted TV/video print.

Continuity: At the beginning when Danny is talking to his Mom and eating a sandwich, the sandwich gets about 5 bites smaller in a split second.

Continuity: When Jack is talking to Lloyd the bartender, his Jack Daniels goes from being two thirds full to nearly empty two or three times without him having drunk any.

Deliberate "mistake": One more helicopter mistake. Look at the final shot of the opening sequence (before "the Interview" title shot). At the top of the frame, you will see the helicopter blades twirling.

Other: Wendy has a baseball bat in her hand and Jack is trying to get the baseball bat. When Wendy hits him over the head, the baseball bat bends.

Continuity: As Wendy talks to the forest ranger look closely at the US Forest Service emblem above his head. It goes up about six inches on the wall throughout the scene.

Continuity: In the initial overhead shot of the house the hedge maze is not there though later on it is shown quite close to the house.

Continuity: Wendy comforts Jack after he has had his nightmare. His hairstyle keeps differing depending on the angle focusing on him.

Visible crew/equipment: Danny goes up to the apartment to get his fire engine and you can see the shadow of the cameraman on the front of his sweater.

Visible crew/equipment: When Jack walks into Mr. Ullman's office if you look at the center window you can see the reflection of the crew behind him moving around in it.

Visible crew/equipment: The shadow of a crew member is visible down the hall, to the right of the door, just above Wendy's knife, as she gets to the top of the stairs.

Continuity: The level of the snow outside the hedge maze is at least five feet deep as the lamp posts stick up halfway through it, and all the large stones are totally covered. As soon as Danny starts running inside the hedge maze the snow is at ground level as you can see by the lights and benches that he passes along the way.

Continuity: In the beginning when Wendy is talking to the doctor, Wendy lights a cigarette, seconds later the paper has burned almost to the filter.

Continuity: Danny walks into The Colorado Lounge and in the shot of Jack watching Wendy holding him we see eight black smudge marks (or power outlets) on the floor in front of his desk. When we saw this spot earlier in the movie, in the wide shot of Jack typing (right after the shot of Danny and Wendy out running in the snowstorm) these spots are not there.

Other: Mr. Ullman asks Jack if his luggage has been brought in and he points to a pile behind them that couldn’t possibly fit in a Volkswagen even if the engine and passengers where taken out. We saw the Volkswagen when they were driving up to the hotel. Nothing was on the roof and Danny had no problem sitting in the rear seat. There's also no indication that the luggage was brought there by an outside source.

Continuity: When Danny is playing alone in the corridor, with his toy cars and trucks, in the overhead shot, the little vehicles are set up on the orange and brown pattern, as the ball roles to him down the center brown path in the carpet's sextagon pattern. However, in Danny's close-up, when the ball is in front of him, all the little toy vehicles are now set up (still the same way) on the opposite side of the carpet's distinct pattern, as he also faces the opposite way. This mistake has absolutely nothing to do with the ghosts of The Outlook moving the ball.

Continuity: Wendy runs outside looking for Danny and she ends up right next to the Sno-Cat. There's hardly any snow on the driver side door but the next time we see it two shots later the door and the treads are now full of snow.

Continuity: Wendy opens up the bathroom window and tries to climb outside and in the close-up, her right arm and head are through the window. In the next shot both her arms and head are outside of the window.

Continuity: The phone doesn't work when Wendy tries to use it to call the forest rangers, and as she walks out of the office, the shadow of the cameraman can be seen on the orange/brown support column at the front desk.

Continuity: Wendy walks up to Jack as he's typing and says, "Get a lot written today?" and the wood statue between Jack's desk and the grand piano, that has been there throughout the movie, has disappeared.
