Crocodile - S1-E2

Continuity mistake: When Dexter and Deb are celebrating her promotion, just before they toast and you look at them from the side Deb has her hands free, when the camera changes she has a crab leg in her hand, and when the camera changes again her hands are empty once more. (00:46:45)

Dirty Harry - S4-E5

Other mistake: When Lundy is shot and falls to the ground, there is no visible injury even though he is facing the camera. Later, Masuka says he was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the neck. The shooter was facing him. We should have seen the blood.

Suggested correction: Hinges on fridge doors can be swapped around for ease of the user.

But virtually nobody casually re-hangs their fridge doors on a whim - they set them up once and leave them. This is clearly done for the sake of visual contrivance.

The Angel of Death - S6-E5

Continuity mistake: Dexter browses the book shelf at Travis' house. The camera pans across, revealing a book titled "Apocalypse Bound" situated at the right on the shelf. When Dexter takes the book off the shelf, it is then shown as the fourth book from the left. When he puts it back, the empty gap where it used to be now appears to the far right on the shelf. Ricochet Rabbit - S6-E10

Continuity mistake: In Season 6, Episode 10, Dexter and Harry are in the motel room where Travis was staying (timestamp 1). Dexter decides to post on Gellar's blog (impersonating Gellar), and the screen on the computer shows the post date as Sunday, November 24, preceded by a Sunday, November 20 post. Aren't Sundays supposed to be a week apart? Then in episode 12 (timestamp 2), Travis is in Dexter's apartment and sees the poster for the Noah's Ark school play. The date posted for the play is Saturday, October 8, ie. in the past compared to the earlier episode. Plus If November 24 were on a Sunday, then October 8 should have been on a Tuesday. Continuity mistake: During the opening sequence of every episode, Dexter prepares for his day. The first thing he does is shave and then fixes breakfast. But by the time he starts eating, he already has long stubble.

Born Free - S1-E12

Continuity mistake: When Rita is talking to Bob outside the house, she is carrying a box. A piece of tinsel keeps moving from hanging over the edge of the box, to being tucked inside.

Father Knows Best - S1-E9

Other mistake: Doaks says he saw the man's gun and chased him, lots of questions arise about what happened, but no-one mentions how a cop has no right to ask a person about a gun they have on them without probable cause. Doaks has no reason to even go after the guy.

Suggested correction: Florida is not an open carry state, so if the man was displaying a gun, the cop had probable cause to pursue and question. Even if the man had a permit to carry a weapon, per Florida law, that weapon must remain concealed. If the cop could see the gun, it was a violation of the law and the cop could not only question, but arrest him.

Are You...? - S7-E1

Factual error: During the walk-through of the crime scene, there is a small remnant of plastic sheeting between Travis' toes. Given the entire church was consumed by flames, or more importantly, the body and foot from which the plastic is pulled are badly burnt, it's highly improbable that the plastic sheeting would still be present. At least not in the form that is shown, but rather more like a globe of melted plastic on or into the body or table. Similarly, the feet wouldn't be 'wet' or glossy with blood. (00:15:22)

Dexter - S1-E1

Continuity mistake: When Dexter and the Lieutenant are talking after finding the head, she says "So Dexter, tell me. How'd you get so smart?" When she does, a lock of hair keeps appearing and disappearing from by her eye. (00:44:30)

Dexter - S1-E1

Visible crew/equipment: When Dexter is driving Joe to the graves at the start, just as they turn to the graves a crew light is reflected in the black paintwork of the car. There are no lights in the background for it to be anything else. (00:02:50)

Let's Give the Boy a Hand - S1-E4

Continuity mistake: A photograph of a landfill is shown from when Dexter is a child, but when Dexter goes to visit the location of the former landfill, an old church can be seen in the background. This church likely predates the landfill as evidenced by its Gothic-style architecture. (00:32:00)

Our Father - S3-E1

Continuity mistake: When Dexter and Vince are next to the dead girl, in the side shot, the tied string from her top is visible on her back and her hair is to the side. But in the overhead shot of her, her hair is covering the tied string and spread more over her back.

Bishop73

Dexter: I am a father, a son, a serial killer.

Show generally

Question: Since Harry knew about Dexter's homicidal tendencies, why would he train Dexter on how to kill people who got away with their crimes instead of taking him to a psychologist?

Answer: Two reasons. First, as a cop he knows that there are lots of murderers walking around free due to flaws in the system so he uses Dexter's "urges" to right the wrongs in the system by taking out people who have no right to walk around free. Secondly, by taking him to a psychologist he runs the risk of having him committed and he doesn't want that for obvious reasons, so he figures it is best to channel his urges to what he considers a greater good.

In addition to the earlier answer, in the last season (8th) of the show, we are introduced to Dr. Vogel, whom Harry had been discussing the situation with Dexter as well, and it is shown on-camera that Harry describes what Dexter has done (killing)... So, technically he did consult a psychologist/psychiatrist, just not having Dexter and her actually meet. But Dr. Vogel was aware of whom it was and how to intercede.
