Ruth destroys the house because Bob has listed it as one of his assets. But by the time she destroys it, he no longer lives there. She could have stuck Bob with the kids, whether or not the house had been destroyed, so there was really no reason for her to do it. [She destroyed the house to keep him from benefitting from it in any way. If she'd simply left the kids with him, it's possible that he might have sold the house for a nice profit. And with such obvious arson, the insurance company would never have paid out, which means he'd get no money for it that way either.]
