I have watched the film's opening scene a dozen times or so, and I still can't really make out what is happening. Which arabs are shooting which? Are they all after Kirk Douglas or just some? Just how does Douglas character survive that explosion on a boat and after shooting Cassavetes' arm, manage to escape from the beach? Pretty much the story of the whole movie; looks good? Yes. Makes sense? Hardly. [All the Arabs are working for Cassavete's- though they might not know it. He did it so that he could film it and later use it to enfuriate the son. This would give him added hatred that they could use it against Arabs. Brainwashing.
