Amelie (2001) - 24 mistakes

Deliberate "mistake": The film is set in 1997. There is a scene where Amelie knocks on a house door and in the background is a new model VW Beetle. These weren't available until early 1998. You can also see several scenes with various new models of Fiat Punto and VW Golf which weren't available until 1999.

Continuity: When Bretodeau picks up the treasure box, inside the phone booth, the way he holds it changes between shots

Continuity: When Nino goes to 'Les deux Moulins' for the first time, we can see Amelie writing the menu on a glass right behind him. A few shots later, we see the glass again and the handwriting is quite different. That's easy to see if you look carefully at the 'd'. Later on, we see the glass once more, and the handwriting has changed again.

Continuity: When Amelie is writing the menu on the glass screen and watching Nino, Nino turns around and she writes 'Oeufs.' Between shots she writes the 's' on the end of 'Oeufs' twice.

Revealing: In the part where Amelie gave back the photo album to the bloke in the fun park, when he finally gets to his bike, you can see people in the background staring intently at the filming.

Continuity: In the adult shop, Samantha is dancing in a room and Nino is trying to get her attention so he writes a note for her to see. Between shots his writing on the note changes.

Factual error: Princess Diana died on the morning of 31 August 1997, not 30 August. [Some subtitles say 30th August, some 31st. Can anyone translate the actual French?][The narrator says the 30th]

Continuity: Young Amelie is taking pictures with her camera. The only button on the camera is on the top right. However in the behind shot of her, the button is on the left.

Visible crew/equipment: Just after Amelie picks up Nino's dropped album, in the shot when she is sitting on some steps looking through it, the shadow of the camera crane is visible on the ground behind her. It is only seen when the camera moves over her to let us look into the album.

Continuity: When Amélie goes into the grocer's apartment for the first time, there is a close-up shot of her unlocking the door. The sleeve you see in this shot is completely different from the shirt she's wearing when she steps inside.

Continuity: When Amelie is going to remove the broken tile, her perfume bottle moves closer to the sink between shots.

Continuity: When Amelie makes some pasta, she grates cheese onto it, then place the grater down with the handle sticking out. But when she looks at the table again, the handle is no longer sticking out.

Continuity: When Amelie dishes out her pasta, it forms a pile. She watches the Glass Man for a while, then looks back at her meal. The pasta is now level in the bowl.

Visible crew/equipment: Amelie steals her father's gnome, runs back to the train station, but it is closing, so she sleeps in a photobooth. As the camera zooms in on her look at the right side of the booth, and you can see a shadow casting over it from the camera crew.

Continuity: When Amelie puts her hand into the hole to get the box, she knocks some dust or dirt onto the tile. When she removes her hand, the tile is clean.

Continuity: When Amelie sees Nino crouched down by the photo booth, poking around underneath, the plastic bag beside him keeps changing position.

Visible crew/equipment: As Amelie picks up the red case containing the album in it, in the shop to the right you can see a man watching the filming through the glass door.

Visible crew/equipment: At the park, after Nino rides off, it goes to a closeup of Amelie. Before she removes her sunglasses, a crewmember is reflected in them, walking towards her with the camera.

Factual error: At the time Amelie's mother dies, little Amelie is about 6/7 years old - you can see her standing in the church just before the tourist falls on her mother. Around the time Amelie leaves the house of her father, she is about 22 years old. However, the narrator speaks of a time-period of five years, which means Amelie would have to be around 15 years old when her mother died.

Visible crew/equipment: When Amelie enters the Glass Man's apartment, two times the camera passes a picture frame on the wall, and both times a camera is reflected in.
