Mortal Engines is mash-up of elements from Mad Max's world, Star Wars, The Terminator, Frankenstein, Golden Compass City of Ember and others that tells of a dystopian steampunk nightmare tale of a world devastated by war that now has a grossly large, predatory and weaponized London (!) trying to crush the rest of the free world. A super-weapon is rediscovered that can end the resistance, but one scarred, brave girl might be able to stop the insanity with the help of some equally brave friends and allies. The atypical good vs. Evil clash culminates into a desperate massive battle! Visually the film is interesting, but there's strangely not much actually new going on that's worth of the long running time.

Continuity mistake: The Stalker, "Shrike," is a persistent hunter, but not terribly quick on his feet. He's sort of a lurching, Frankenstein-like cyborg who is always pursuing Hester Shaw at about walking speed. When Valentine frees Shrike from Sharkmoor prison, miles out to sea, we see Valentine in his airship destroying the prison and we see Shrike's prison cell sink to the sea floor. This cuts to a long distance shot of the prison exploding and sinking in the far background, miles away, as Valentine's airship comes sweeping from the far background into the foreground and out of frame. Almost immediately, Shrike emerges from the surf in the foreground and slowly trudges ashore, implying that he somehow travelled miles across the sea floor just as swiftly as did the airship, in a matter of moments, despite his slow, lumbering gait. Hester Shaw: I was eight years old when my mother died. She loved traveling the world and digging up the past. He used to visit all the time, and then one day everything changed. She'd found something, something he wanted.
