Saved by the Bell

Show generally

Question: In the very beginning of the series Zach, Lisa, Screech and Mr. Belding all live in Indiana and attend the same junior high. Somehow they all end up in Malibu, California attending the same high school. Does anyone else find this a little odd?

Answer: The show that took place in Indiana that you are referring to was titled "Good Morning Miss Bliss." This show only lasted one season. The kids on the show, however, were popular so they decided to create a spin-off titled "Saved By the Bell," that aired on Saturday Mornings. I'm sure they changed the location because they thought the California setting would make the show more fun and watchable for pre-teens and teens.

Question: What happened to Kelly and Jessie in the episodes with Tori? Can someone explain what went on there.

Answer: As far as I can tell Jessie and Kelly decided to leave the show because their contracts were up and they wanted to pursue other things. But there were still episodes of Saved by the Bell left to tape so Tori came along to fill that void. Jessie and Kelly were supposedly still at Bayside, but they were "off-screen." The Graduation episode was filmed before Kelly and Jessie left the show.

No Hope With Dope - S3-E21

Question: At the start of the episode "No Hope With Dope", Lisa runs into the hallway with exciting news, and Zack responds to Lisa using a sentence ending with "you'll crack your makeup." The audience (primarily young females) starts screaming and cheering very loudly to that line. I am trying to understand what about that "crack your makeup" line was there to scream and go ga-ga about.

Answer: Zack is always good for a sarcastic jibe. Lisa was written as the most fashion and make-up conscious of the Bayside High girls. She was also portrayed as serious and somewhat prissy. The "crack your makeup" comment was a throwaway line. Zack was suggesting Lisa doesn't often get overly excited for fear of having to reapply her face. The line is met by laughter and screeches from largely adolescent female audience that seem out of proportion to the humor. "Saved By the Bell" audiences were rather prone to such excessive ebullience for no apparent reason. The reaction didn't last long, and the scene moved on quickly.

Michael Albert

Yeah that doesn't make any sense.

Answer: If there is a reference to "cracking" make-up, the inference would be that the person piles it on or simply wears way too much make-up; the more make-up is caked (or piled) on, the less of the person's real face is visible. The implication is that deep down (i.e, underneath all the make-up), the person's face is actually UGLY.

KeyZOid

Zack and Lisa are friends (in fact the briefly date in one episode). He is definitely not calling her ugly. After re-watching the episode, it seems like some of the girls in the audience loved Lisa and wanted to cheer her in when she entered a scene. It happens another time when she walks in and it sounds like these same girls scream as soon as she enters the shot.

Question: During the opening credits, each main character is shown briefly in 3 sets of one second scenes from different episodes while the actor's or actress' name is shown. I've seen all the episodes these brief scenes come from except one... the first of 3 from Kelly (where she's waving her fingers). I've never been able to find this brief scene in any episode. Anybody know where this scene is from?

Answer: I think it's called Fatal Attraction when Screech and Zack overheard Kelly say she wanted to go to the dance with Zack.

No, that wasn't it. I saw that "fatal attraction" episode and she did THAT wave in a classroom. The one in question was most likely at the Max and she had a different outfit as well. I believe in reviewing the show it was in a scene from the episode "King of the Hill" from the first season because her outfit and background match, but her "waving" was not seen - possibly a cut scene at the last minute.

House Party - S2-E5

Continuity mistake: Kelly said her youngest brother can burp his whole name Kenneth Leonard Kapowski in one burp. However in the previous year, Kelly had an infant brother named Billy. According to this info, unlikely Kenneth would be younger than Billy.

Suggested correction: Kelly can have more than one brother because in the episode where Kelly gets her job at the Max she said "I cook every night for my 11 siblings". So he could be younger or just have a nickname.

The mistake is valid because she says her "youngest" brother, not "younger." In the episode "The Babysitters" (which was meant to air in season 1 and produced before "House Party"), her brother Billy is an infant and says his first words. Kelly has 6 siblings and she never said she cooked for 11 siblings when getting a job at The Max. She says she sets the dinner table for 9 people three times a night.

Ironically, the show only reveals 5 siblings each in their own individual episode. (#6 is unknown). Bennett (mentioned), Nicki (seen), Kyle (voice heard only), Kenneth (mentioned), Billy (seen) are the 5 of 6 siblings revealed.

Trivia: During the final 2 seasons of Saved by the Bell, most notably the season with Tori and the one following it, look for actor Casper Van Dien in the background of some episodes. He appeared in many scenes throughout the final 2 seasons as a random background extra, most notably in the locker hallway scenes. This was before he made it big in Hollywood.
