Amistad (1997)

Corrected entry: When President Van Buren enters the room at one point, "Hail to the Chief" is being played by the band. Although the song existed as early as 1812, it was not used ceremonially for the President until the 1840s.

Correction: It had been played for Presidents as early as the 1820s and was, in fact, played at the inauguration of Martin van Buren the previous year.

Suggested correction: She trusts Ben will not let her drown and holds on to him, keeping her up.

No if you watch she's several feet in there away from him and the ladder behind her and this is the deep end of the pool.

Corrected entry: Stabler slams a female suspect into the barred window which leads to her having a potentially life ending seizure. If he's had problems like this before, it's been mentioned, then this should've gotten him suspended or fired.

Correction: Plenty of cops have done worse and kept their jobs.

Happy Gilmore (1996)

Video

Other mistake: When Bob Barker reaches up to grab Happy by the neck, his head is resting on the grass immediately before and after that shot. Happy was standing fully upright, so there's no way Bob Barker's arm could have been that long.

Suggested correction: Happy isn't standing. He's kneeling. You can see him stand after Bob grabs him.

M*A*S*H (1972)

Show generally

Corrected entry: Major Houlihan is frequently shown with very long fingernails. This is against Army regulations and highly impractical in the Operating Room.

Correction: Margaret herself is the highest ranked nurse. As such, only the commanding officer of the unit would be able to put her on report. Neither Blake nor Potter seem to care about such things when they do not affect the stability of the unit. As well, Margaret herself is very well connected among the local generals and as such would be able to get away with minor details like that.

LorgSkyegon

Corrected entry: While Howard Stark is leaving the military base, in the background there is a white guy with black hair who resembles Loki.

oswal13

Correction: And? Just because someone resembles Loki doesn't mean that it is or was ever intended to be a reference to Loki.

LorgSkyegon

Correction: Think about it, probably Loki traveled in time exactly at the same point Tony retrieves the Teserract but we don't know yet, maybe will be explained in Loki's T.V. series and also it's very unlikely that a single guy with long hair and hippie look is on a military base in the 70's.

oswal13

This is way too speculative to be a valid argument against the correction. Until and unless the Loki TV series confirms that this character is indeed Loki, then this is not valid trivia.

Phaneron

Trivia: While Peter and Ned are hugging in the school there is blond girl behind them wearing a Spider-Man skirt.

oswal13

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: It's not a Spider-Man skirt. It's just a skirt with a black and white spider web design. Especially since the black suit was not something that has happened yet in universe.

Down Periscope (1996)

Character mistake: When Pascal gives his mutiny speech he refers to comsubpac, the Submarine Command for the Pacific fleet. He should have said comsublant. It seems to be a common theme of mistakes seeing as the museum sub they used for the Stingray is kept at a pier in San Francisco. Most of the scenes at dock are filmed there and at sea in nearby waters. Its possible that the original script was based on a west coast 'war game' and later got changed after a number of scenes were already filmed. (01:01:00)

Suggested correction: He says "comsublant."

Down Periscope (1996)

Corrected entry: When Graham is on the Orlando he is a flag officer. Although he has command of the task force in the exercise he can not take over command of the ship he is on. In Navy Regulations the Captain or Commanding Officer of the vessel has sole discretion over operation of such vessel and can not be overruled by a flag officer. Even if he is removed from command the first officer would maintain the authority until the ship returned to port.

Correction: As you can see, Captain Knox did attempt to protest. But attempting to overrule a flag officer in this situation could cause harm to his career (in which case he would never make admiral and might be removed from command), especially with an officer like Graham on the promotion board. So he acquiesced. See also at the end Admiral Winslow told Graham to forget about a third star. Violating this regulation is probably the reason.

The Karate Kid (1984)

Corrected entry: When Daniel enters Mr. Miyagi's house for the first time, the door knocks into wind chimes hanging from the ceiling. When Daniel's mother finds Daniel at Mr. Miyagi's house and enters, the chimes are gone.

Correction: Given the time that passes, he easily could have taken them down.

Greg Dwyer

Nothing confirms that he was removing them.

Nothing confirms that they ate every day during the film's time frame either. Does that mean they didn't eat other than what we saw?

dewinela

Nothing confirms he didn't remove them either.

Nothing confirms he wasn't either.

LorgSkyegon

There are at least 3 scenes where the chimes are present. 1. When Daniel first goes to Myagi's room-he opens the door and hits the chimes. 2. When he goes to Myagi's room to say thank you for fixing his bike-the chimes seem a little further away from the door and he seems to have to exaggerate the door opening to actually hit them. 3. When Daniels mother enters Myagi's room the chimes are there (possibly slightly repositioned) but she doesn't open the door wide enough to make contact with them.

Correction: No they aren't. She just opens the door enough to not bump it.

Stupidity: This film reveals that the theme park was built upon a dormant volcano. This means that John Hammond either neglected to do a geological survey when picking a location for his park, or simply ignored it and foolishly gambled that the volcano would never erupt.

Phaneron

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: Lots of people live right next to dormant volcanos. It can be thousands of years before a dormant volcano erupts. Might be a risk, but not as much as lets say living on a tectonic boundary or in tornado alley.

lionhead

There's a difference between assuming the risk of living in an area prone to a natural disaster versus building a theme park that's completely reliant on tourism revenue in an area prone to a natural disaster. If a person's home is destroyed by a volcano, they can eventually get a new home, even if it takes a year or two. If a multi-billion dollar theme park is destroyed by a volcano, it's not something that can be replaced so easily, especially since no insurance company in their right mind would cover any of it. Additionally, the island in this film is fictional, which means the writers deliberately chose for a volcanic eruption to be the reason for the evacuation, when they could have just as easily made it so that the military decides to carpet-bomb the island or send in ground troops to gun down all the dinosaurs.

Phaneron

A dormant volcano is a dormant volcano, no reason to think it will erupt only years after you build a theme park on it. The area is not "prone" to a natural disaster. The eruption is a total surprise. Vesuvius erupts once every 2 decades or something and a lot more than a simple theme park is inside its destruction zone (red zone), including 800,000 people. And that is an active volcano. Take a look at Carney Park, a military recreational facility on top of a dormant volcano. Stupid?

lionhead

Yes, it is stupid. If you put a multi-billion dollar investment into an area where it could be destroyed by a volcanic eruption, it is a stupid decision, regardless of whether it's real life or fiction.

Phaneron

Also, the examples you gave are areas with civilian populations that rely on those types of attractions to help stimulate the local economy. Isla Nublar is a privately owned island with no civilian population to speak of, other than park employees, meaning it is 100% reliant on tourism for its revenue.

Phaneron

How many theme parks are built in California, which is severely prone to earthquakes?

LorgSkyegon

That's not an apples to apples comparison. California has a heavy civilian population and theme parks help contribute to their economy. Jurassic World is located on an isolated island with no civilian population and has to rely completely on tourism to stay in business.

Spaceballs (1987)

Suggested correction: It's not the same scene. Notice that in the scene where they drop it, it's relatively flat where they are walking. In the instant cassette scene, they are walking down a hill.

They were by a hill, but the angle didn't allow the camera to see it.

Resident Evil 7

Video

Revealing mistake: Towards the beginning, you find a VHS tape upstairs in the house. Putting it in the VCR plays the tape, but allows you to see the video through he camera man's perspective, by playing as him during the recording. If you press the control button to block, you see the camera man's hands, both arms, come up to block. However the camera he's recording with stays in place. It's a camera that uses VHS so it wouldn't be strapped to his head. He should drop the camera if he lifts both hands like that, but is putting them in front of the camera.

Quantom X

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: It's possible it was a non-VHS camera that was transferred to a VHS.

LorgSkyegon

That would make no sense considering the context and situation. This is a 'haunted house' and with this being a Resident Evil game which is a time line set where the end of the world happened in the mid 90's when VHS was still in wide spread use.

Quantom X

Clearly a mistake. For example why would you record something and then transfer it to outdated technology?

Ssiscool

Indeed. And now that I've seen a bit further into the game. Another character gets the same camera and records another message on a tape and leaves it behind for you to find.

Dale to the Chief - S9-E5

Corrected entry: At the end of the episode we see Hank at the motor vehicle office alone which means he drove himself there. Dale later comes in and helps to get Hank's license changed back to male. Afterwards Hank gets into Dale's van and puts on his seat belt implying Dale is driving him home. Hank should have gotten into his own truck.

True Lies (1994)

Corrected entry: After Bill Paxton pisses himself at the bridge, you see Arnold and Tom walking back towards the van. If you look, it's not Tom Arnold, but some other guy with the same build. The face is obviously different.

Correction: No it's not. That's definitely Tom Arnold. It begs the question as to why they would have a stand-in just for that one scene.

LorgSkyegon

Re stand-ins, as various Friends mistakes demonstrate, stand-ins are often used when the star isn't really needed, due to the shot being from far away, or them being mostly offscreen, etc. Might be the star is done for the day and leaves set, then they suddenly want a pickup shot or a change of scheduling and they work with what they've got.

Jon Sandys

I agree it is definitely Tom Arnold, but there are many possible reasons for using a stand-in for just one scene, so it begs the questions why you think it begs the question.

But since Tom Arnold was available for the shot it begs the question of why you begged the question about begging the question. I'll get me coat.

I agree with LordSkyegon. There is no reason to use a stand-in in that scene.

Mission to Mars (2000)

Factual error: Ship explodes. Crew evacuated to the REMO, but Tim Robbins slips from the REMO after attaching the lifeline. They tell his wife she has insufficient fuel to reach him. Velocity is determined by fuel, not distance. She could have used 25% of remaining fuel to reach him, 25% to arrest speed then 50% to get them both back to the REMO. It's not like a car - once in motion, you remain in motion.

Libshoppe

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: It's not saying that she has insufficient fuel to reach him. It's saying that she has insufficient fuel to reach him, arrest them both, and get back to the REMO before they are caught in the Martian gravity well.

LorgSkyegon

I disagree. Had she not used thrust (wasted fuel) to stop and shoot a line (wasted time) she would have continued her velocity, arrested at rendezvous and could have saved him. They never inferred the decision was based on time, nor would that have been valid.

Libshoppe

Continuity mistake: At the skit competition, the RHO class is in a boat with the waves moving. They stop moving their oars when the sorority girls pop their heads up. The waves continue to move while the girls are briefly singing, even though the guys are not moving their oars. However, after the girls go back down, the waves have stopped, and only move again when the guys move their oars.

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: There is no evidence at all that the oars are moving the waves. It is more likely some people offscreen are doing it.

Little Monsters (1989)

The Patriot (2000)

Other mistake: When Martin and his younger sons attack the soldiers Gabriel sent to their camp, the body count totals 20. That includes the private who gets up and tries to run that Martin hacks to death. Man of Steel (2013)

Corrected entry: It is highly unlikely that a college-educated captain in the Air Force who was selected over her peers to be the aide to a three star general wouldn't have some idea what the word terraforming means. Despite that, Captain Ferris is ignorant of the meaning of the word when Dr. Hamilton concludes that the World Engine is terraforming the planet. Likely just an excuse for Dr. Hamilton to explain to the audience what terraforming is, but it was still out of place for a character of her education level. (01:44:50)

AD

Correction: Terraforming isn't a common subject in pretty much any college, as it's far beyond anything we are capable of. You'd be more likely to know about it from science fiction. Either way, something being unlikely doesn't make it a mistake.
