Spin City (1996)

The Thanksgiving Show - S4-E9

Corrected entry: When Dierdre first proposes a game of strip chess to Carter to prove to him that she's smarter, he denies, and says, "If it makes you feel better, by all means, believe you're smarter than me." Dierdre attempts to correct him by saying, "Smarter than I." which frustrates him into agreeing to play. But Carter got the usage right in the first place. (00:10:10)

Correction: While both "than I" or "than me" are used, in this case Carter was wrong and Dierdre's correction is correct. "than I" is used when there are 2 subjects and the "am" is implied. "than me" is only used when there is a subject and an object. In Carter's sentence both "you" and "I" are subjects (smarter than I am.) "Me" is an object pronoun and is often used in informal speaking to sound more natural, but is still not grammatically correct.
