Continuity mistake: At the beginning of the movie, Leonard looks outside his window and sees room 304 (which will be given later to him on top of his current room) - it is on the same floor he is currently on. Still, when he learns from the clerk that he has been ripped off, we see them both coming out of room 21, which probably is room 221 with the first 2 missing, because it's next to the reception, itself located on the second floor (we know that because from room 304, Leonard only needs to go down one flight of stairs to reach it). Both his rooms, 304 and 221, could not possibly have been on the same floor.(00:06:40 - 00:26:25)
Audio problem: When Bob carries Charlotte back to her room, he opens her door using a regular key (you hear the "teeth" going into the lock, as as it turns). But when he comes out of the room and closes the door, you can see it's actually a card-key access room (the card-lock is on the right side of the door). While some card keys (with holes) rely on mechnical force and makes sounds like a regular key, it is an older system. This is a top Tokyo hotel, which would only offer the best and most modern equipment to its customers, i.e. top-of-the-line, silent (non-disturbing) card keys.(00:52:00)
Trivia: The subtitled lyrics to Augustine's song (the part where she is standing up) have not much to do with the original French lyrics. Could it be there already are two versions of the song, one in French and one in English?
Continuity mistake: Augustine's hair has a life of its own. It becomes messed up a few shots before she fights with Gaby, then is back to its proper position during the piano shot of her song, then it's back to messy - but in a different way than before - for the standing up part of the song.
Revealing mistake: You can tell all shots in the parallel world where there is writing visible are simply regular shots being reversed because Molly Ringwald's watch and ring, which she wears on her left arm and hand, suddenly are on her right arm and hand. Especially obvious in the scene where she goes over work papers with Sandy.
Factual error: When asked, Julie Delpy says the reason her English is so good is because she spent a summer in LA. Come on. Even after a year, almost no one could manage to speak and pronounce a foreign language that well, let alone in a summer. Her English is very nearly flawless. We know she has spent some time in London before, but if she had stayed there long enough to learn to speak such good English, she would have learned it the way they speak it there, which means she would have a British accent and not an American one. Someone - whether or not she's a native speaker - doesn't change accents after spending a mere three months somewhere.
Factual error: Philip uses his left hand to sign the decree declaring Joan officially crazy. No one in the 15th century would have used his left hand to write, as 1) it was considered the wrong hand to write with and 2) writing with the left hand would have smudged the fresh ink and rendered any document unreadable.
Continuity mistake: When they are preparing for the concert, the girls are setting up stuff on both sides of the entrance door (inside and outside). In all shots, the credit card stickers are in the same place, in the left corner of the right door, whereas they should switch sides for the inside and outside shots. It's most noticeable because of the huge Amex sticker on the right.
Trivia: Just before Bretodeau enters the phone booth while the phone rings, he's the only one moving in real time; all other characters in the background are in slow motion.
Factual error: Worth mentioning, because we see it written on screen: in French, Jocelyn is a man's name -- even its pronounciation is different. For it to be a woman's name, it has to be spelled Jocelyne.
Continuity mistake: When Maria and her husband are at the cemetary, she says Yolanda died at 33. But a few shots earlier, Yolanda's tombstone read "1960-1987".
Continuity mistake: While Alice is picking up glasses, she tucks a marigold in her hair. After she drops the glasses and she bends down to pick the pieces up, the flower disappears, then is back in the following shot.
Continuity mistake: The bomb's countdown starts faster than a second between numbers change, then eventually gets to about 1 second/change, then goes faster, etc. Its speed keeps changing from shot to shot. Also, the numbers are inconsistent and don't match the time passed between shots of the same scene (i.e. one second later, the countdown can be 5 numbers down).
Factual error: Chocolate started getting known in France in the 17th century, under Louis XIV. Since the movie takes place about a hundred years before that, Marguerite eating it is an anachronism. Even if she somehow got hold of some, at first chocolate was only a drink - it took a while longer before people started eating it.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where the Frau visits Dr. Evil in prison, the guards' position in the background changes from shot to shot - arms crossed, on the side, hands folded...
Factual error: Whenever they show the flagpoles "in front of the United Nations", it's actually those in front of Ottawa's Conference Centre, and the flags are those of the Canadian provinces and territories.
Factual error: Danielle is hardly as common a name in French as in English, and relatively recent (a few hundred years at the most). The following information is taken from "L'histoire de nos prénoms : 2000 ans, 20 000 prénoms", by Léo Journiaux, published in 1999 by Hachette. Ever since the Middle Ages, the clergy had forbidden Frechmen to choose first names other than those of saints. In fact, the Council of Trente turned that clergy rule into law, which means since there was no St. Daniel or Ste. Danielle, Daniel and Danielle could not be bestowed on Catholic babies. You have to wait for the French Revolution (decree from March 24, 1793) for names other than saints' to be allowed in France. In the end, French parents had to wait for 1993 (this is not a typo) to be able to name their child whatever they wanted: before that, each baby's name had first to be approved by the civil registry administration. In fact, in 1970, a man from Dijon was denied the right to call his daughter Vanessa. Now, Danielle in the movie has to be a Catholic, or else Henry (being crown prince) wouldn't have been able to marry her. As a Catholic from the 1500s, she could not possibly have had a name that isn't a saint's name. Thus, calling her Danielle is an anachronism. Here is a rough translation of the "Daniel" entry in the abovementioned book. The entry for Danielle refers us to Daniel, in which is provided all the etymological information. "Daniel--masculine. Name in use in Europe since the 4th century A.D. The Protestant Reform allowed it to spread in Germany, but especially in England. In Scotland, where it's the translation for Donald, it was the 22nd most popular name for males in 1935. In France, it was first authorised by the law instated on April 1st, 1803.
