At the start, the movie explains what the rules are for the four main characters: Avoid contact with the sick, clean everything in 24 hours if an infected touched that place. Well, in the hospital, the males throw the gun to the father of the infected kid. When he doesn't need the gun anymore, he puts it on the ground, and the main character takes it and just puts it back in his pants as though it's nothing to worry about. [It's a highly charged, emotional and frightening situation. They're bound to make mistakes like this from time to time. As we see, most of the people who get infected make mistakes like this.]
