After living a full life with the Grogans, Marley has to be put to sleep due to complications of a twisted stomach. Despite all the trouble he was and the fact that John called Marley "the world's worst dog", John tells Marley that he was a "great dog" before he is put down. The movie ends with the family holding a funeral for Marley with tearful statements by the various members of the family, including Jenny taking off the necklace that Marley had eaten earlier in the movie and putting it in the ground with Marley. They also end up getting a new puppy.
