Promising Young Woman

While at Forest medical school, Cassie's long-term best friend Nina got intoxicated (almost unconscious) at a party and was repeatedly raped by fellow medical school student Al while others watched, laughed, blamed her for "putting herself" in that position, and another student even filmed the scene and distributed copies of the tape via cell phone. Nina complained to the Dean, but nothing happened to anyone involved due to a he-said/she-said uncertainty, lack of evidence (the tape had not yet surfaced), attitude that it was her fault as well as "funny", and the Dean's mentality that she was not going to ruin a young man's future for something that "happens a lot."

Nina - at the top of her class - was so devastated and humiliated that she dropped out of medical school. Cassie also dropped out to support her best friend, but Nina was so distraught that she apparently committed suicide. Cassie was left to deal with this and the fact that IF she had gone to the party with Nina, this would not have happened to Nina and they both would be medical doctors.

Cassie works at a coffee shop and still lives at home with her wealthy parents, who are embarrassed and want her to move out already. They know she stays out late and comes home after "who knows what she does." On her 30th birthday, they give Cassie a suitcase, a not-so-subtle hint as other times. Cassie has been going to bars and night clubs, pretending to be intoxicated and "out of it." She knows a "nice boy" will come along and ask her if she is OK, offer her a "safe" ride, and then try to take advantage of her. When the would-be rapist makes his move, Cassie suddenly discloses her sobriety and humiliates the "good guy."

One day working at the coffee shop, former medical student classmate Ryan comes in for coffee and they gradually start a relationship. Ryan liked Cassie in medical school but did not disclose this because he wasn't sure if Cassie was interested in him - then Cassie dropped out and did not keep in touch with anyone. Ryan tells Cassie about some of her previous classmates who, like him, are now doctors. Cassie ultimately would like to get revenge against the medical students who humiliated Nina to the point of suicide as well as the Dean who covered up the alleged rape.

When Ryan mentions that Al is having a bachelor's party and getting married, Cassie sees her chance to get revenge and "make things right" for Nina. Cassie puts an elaborate plan in motion to make everyone involved pay for what they did. Knowing that she may be risking her life by going as a stripper nurse to Al's bachelor's party at a cabin, she prepares some pre-scheduled messages to various people to help ensure she gets the justice she is seeking.

KeyZOid

Deliberate mistake: A shot of the pile of ashes from the fire wherein Cassie's body was essentially cremated showed Nina's half of the broken heart necklace sticking out ABOVE the ashes, which would be impossible. Also, a metal charm on a chain that was around Cassie's neck would not survive the huge fire or be totally clean and unscathed.

Mrs. Fisher: I know you feel bad that you weren't there but you gotta let it go.
Cassandra: I'm just trying to fix it.
Mrs. Fisher: Oh, come on. You can't. Don't be a child Cassie.
