Factual error: Throughout the entire film Burt holds all of his rifles' butts underneath his armpit, rather than against his shoulder. A trained "survivalist" such as him would surely know better. Holding the "elephant gun" in such a way would most likely break his arm, wrist and hand when it fired. (00:58:20)

Factual error: When Val is talking to Burt on the CB radio and desperately trying to tell him to get out of his basement, Burt is using a handheld CB. After Val's very last transmission, Burt is now holding a rifle, not the CB. When the Graboid crashes through Burt's basement wall, we hear him say over Val's CB, "Jesus Chr..." his transmission was cut off. First of all, Burt wasn't holding the CB so he wasn't transmitting at the time. Second, there are portable CBs that you can lock the PTT button for extended transmissions (I owned one), but that wasn't the case here. Finally, even if by some chance Burt accidentally did lock the PTT button before putting it down, it wouldn't have cut off. The Graboid broke through away from where Burt was standing and talking and couldn't affect the CB. It was done for dramatic effect of the scene. (00:58:30)

Suggested correction: Could be he put the CB down on the PTT button (it's a rather large one) and it stopped transmitting when the tremors caused it to flip off it.

Revealing mistake: When the lawn mower the heroes send off as a diversion crashes you can see a wire pulling it. (01:01:30)

Trivia: Reportedly, star Kevin Bacon was at a rough patch in his life during production and didn't understand the appeal of the film or the light-hearted comedic elements. (Even once breaking down in public and exclaiming in frustration "I'm in a movie about giant underground worms!") And thus, he chose to have no involvement in the sequels. It wasn't until some years later that he decided to re-visit the film and give it another chance after it became a massive cult-hit, and discovered that he actually really loved it. Bacon has since gone on record saying one of his dream projects would be to reprise his role of Val McKee in a future film.

Question: Wouldn't Burt and his wife get in trouble for having all the weapons in their house? Even in later movies, there is no sign they got in trouble and Burt continued to have all these big weapons on hand.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: No, there's nothing illegal about any of the weapons they owned. Some of them may have required a Class 3 firearms license, but even this is not difficult (just expensive) for a law-abiding citizen to obtain.

Answer: In some parts of the US, especially in far-out desert towns, home arsenals like this are the norm. There is really no limit on how many firearms or ammo American's can own. Machine guns are illegal, but can be permitted. If you have any semi-auto firearm, it's not hard to convert to a machine gun. Albeit, the firearm will fail apart fairly quickly from the abuse.
