High School Musical

Question: Chad tries to discourage Troy from singing with the line, "If you sing in musicals, you're going to end up in my mom's refrigerator." Any clue as to what this means?

Answer: When Chad brings up Michael Crawford (the iconic Phantom in musical performances of Phantom of the Opera) he points out that Crawford's picture has never been on cereal (Wheaties) boxes like popular athletes. Chad says that his mom saw Phantom of the Opera on Broadway 27 times, and she put Crawford's picture "in" her refrigerator. So then Chad tells Troy that if he plays basketball his picture will end up on a cereal box, but if he sings in musicals his picture will only end up in his mom's (or anyone's) refrigerator. Apparently since Chad's mom was nuts about Michael Crawford, one of her "crazy diet ideas" was to put Crawford's picture in the fridge to help her stick to her diet.

Question: In 'Breaking Free' Troy doesn't look at Gabriella until a few seconds after what should have been the start of the first line. Does this mean that Gabriella should have started the song, but Troy encouraged her by starting the song?

Answer: I'm not positive, but that is what I've always assumed.

Question: Why would Gabriella even audition for a musical if she knew from the start that she is afraid to sing with people staring at her? Doesn't she realize if she gets the part an entire audience will be watching?

Answer: Well at the start she was just doing it for fun and because Troy was doing it. But as they went on she just wanted to get the role because it would have showed the school that she wasn't the freaky geeky nerd girl. So she put out all the thoughts of the audience till they actually had to be there.

Question: How is it that Gabriella is not spotted by Sharpay when the former hides in the toilet doing her solo rehearsal for "Breaking Free"? When Sharpay leaves, Gabriella just appears from behind a wall, a place which Sharpay just passed and would have noticed her.

Answer: I think it's implied that Gabriella was hiding in a stall with the door closed and then appeared after she heard Sharpay leave.

Answer: Well it supposed to be the point that Sharpay doesn't notice that she is right there. When I first saw it I didn't understand it either. But it is just meaning that Gaberiella wasn't supposed to be caught, so she moved out of the way and hid so Sharpay wouldn't see her.

That makes no sense.

Question: Why, if Mrs Darbus doesn't want Troy in 'Twinkle Town', did she give them a call back?

Answer: Because she heard how good Troy and Gabriella were. I'd give them a callback after that.

Question: This is really bugging me: why is Gabriella suddenly wearing a red dress during the last song when everyone else is still in the same clothes?

Answer: Right after they finish the chorus, when they start the next verse, you can see Gabriella taking off her Scholastic Decathlon uniform on the right side of the shot. Her red dress is inside. (She might have done that because Troy took off his jacket in the first song that they sang together).

Answer: Gabriella was actually wearing a pink shirt and a floral skirt when singing with Troy for callbacks but then is magically wearing a red dress at the game shortly after. However, Kelsi and Taylor are both wearing different outfits so perhaps they changed or the game was rescheduled due to the technical issues?

Question: Who got the main roles in the musical?

Answer: The lead roles went to Gabriella and Troy with Sharpay and Ryan as their understudies.

Question: I still can not understand, why didn't Troy start singing when they were to perform "Breaking Free"? How did Troy know that Gabriella was too nervous to sing if the first verse was Troy's?

Answer: Because he noticed how terrified Gabriella was and tried to console her.

Question: Throughout the film, Coach Bolton says that the championship game is in two weeks but the decathlon is in a week. How do they happen on the same day?

Answer: It is because in the movie Sharpay got the decathlon rescheduled and the callbacks to be on the same day as the championship game so that Troy and Gabriella can't make the callbacks.

Answer: The decathlon was most likely rescheduled.

Continuity mistake: After Ryan and Sharpay's initial audition, when Ryan tells the girl not to be discouraged because the theater needs fans, the blue janitor's cart is visible in the doorway. When Troy and Gabriella help Kelsi pick up the sheet music, the janitor's cart has vanished from that doorway, but when Ms. Darbus comes back to tell Troy and Gabriella about the call-backs, the janitor's cart has reappeared. (There are two doorways that have green exit signs overhead, at the back wall opposite the stage. Troy leaves the cart at the right doorway.) (00:33:40 - 00:35:40)
