National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Continuity mistake: When Uncle Lewis and Aunt Bethany have just arrived and Aunt Bethany says, "Oh dear, did I break wind?" Ellen helps Aunt Bethany fully remove her coat. Seconds later, within the same scene, Ellen is still helping Bethany off with her coat. (01:02:45)

Continuity mistake: In the department store as Clark is talking with Mary, the lingerie sales lady, his left arm is supporting him on the glass counter as he is standing. The next shot when Rusty approaches, Clark is now bent down with his left arm resting on the counter.

Suggested correction: You actually see Clark go from sitting on the counter to bending down as the saleslady is modelling the undergarment.

That's not the part the mistake is talking about. The mistake is valid. Clark is sitting in the counter but is off screen when he changes position (so you don't actually see it). When Rusty enters the shot, Clark's hand is in the counter. In the next shot, his elbow is on the counter, with no time elapsing.

Continuity mistake: After the SWAT team busts into the Griswold's home and an officer yells "Freeze!", Clark's right arm changes position from either being raised or lowered as the scene quick cuts.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: In an early shot of the outside of the house, the motorhome that Eddie and family show up in is parked in the driveway. The problem is, they don't appear until later in the film. (00:37:55)

Continuity mistake: When the SWAT team charges into the Griswold's house and orders everyone to freeze, Ellen's head is behind Clark's right arm in the shots from the rear, while the shots from the front show Ellen's head in front of Clark's right arm.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: As Clark is stapling the Christmas lights to the house, there are bits of snow and ice on his left-hand glove in the close-ups. But in the longer shots of Clark, the glove has no snow and ice present.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: After Clark dedicates the Griswold Family Christmas tree and it expands, Ellen's hands are on her hips, but the next quick shot of her shows her hands clasped behind her back.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: After Clark cuts the rope restraining the tree branches, Rusty is very close to the tree, but the final shot when Clark gives the "OK" sign shows Rusty about two feet from the branches.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: In the scene of Clark standing in the snow trying to figure out why his Christmas lights did not work, the paper he is holding in his right hand is mid torso to him, but in the next shot when Rusty leaves him, his right hand has instantly dropped to his side and he raises his paper-holding hand again.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: When Clark, Eddie, and Catherine are admiring the Christmas lights of the Griswold house, Clark is very close to Eddie with his left arm draped over Eddie's shoulder, but the next quick cut to Clark when he says, "Eddie?", shows Clark further away and his left arm at his side, and not stretched out.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: In the Christmas dinner scene, closeups of Rocky show his right hand raised to his face, but the overhead shots do not.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: After Mr. Shirley tells Clark he will get a bonus plus twenty percent, Catherine, Rocky, and Ruby Sue cheer and get up from the couch to mingle with the relatives while Rusty and Audrey respond excitedly. There is a close up reaction shot of Clark as he begins falling, then a long shot of Clark falling to the floor as Catherine, Rocky, Ruby Sue, Audrey and Rusty are in their original positions on the couch, calmly watching Clark fall.

Scott215

Continuity mistake: After the tree burns, Rusty says, "Dad's gonna flip out." Clark Sr.'s left elbow is close to and behind Rusty's head, but in the next instant shot of Rusty, Ellen, and Audrey, Clark Sr.'s elbow is not there.

Continuity mistake: When the Griswolds are driving to the tree farm, they are being harassed by the rednecks in the truck. Several shots of the front of the truck show only two passengers, but one view of the truck through its rear window shows three passengers. (00:04:17)

Continuity mistake: When Uncle Lewis and Aunt Bethany arrive, the wreath on the front door is lit with Christmas lights. When the door opens from inside the home, there are no lights on the wreath....it is just plain green. (01:01:58)

Continuity mistake: When Clark and Eddie are standing next to the Christmas tree drinking eggnog, when Eddie walks over to the decoration and knocks it over, in one shot his glass is less than half full and in the next it is almost completely full and he takes a gulp. (00:45:55)

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Clark is sliding down the hill on the sled, several times you can see fins on the bottom to help whoever was riding it control the direction a little better. When Clark is rubbing the oil on the bottom of the sled before he starts it is completely flat on the bottom. (00:50:28)

Continuity mistake: After Eddie et al arrive at the Griswolds, "Snots" is introduced. When everyone else has gone into the house, Clark is left outside with the dog. A shot shows the dog at Clark's side, and if you look at Clark's sleeve, he's wearing a sweater, but actually has on a windbreaker. At the end of the movie, Clark's wearing the sweater. Apparently the shot was taken of him and the dog, and edited back into the film early on. (00:44:30)

Continuity mistake: After the tree burns up from Uncle Lewis' stogie, he turns around revealing fire on his back. Right as he is turning, the shot cuts to Clark and back to Lewis. In this new shot, Lewis' hair is different (compare the wigs), indicating the person getting the fire on his back put out is a stunt person.

Continuity mistake: In the opening scene, when the family is on their way to get a Christmas tree, they get into a road rage battle. If you look closely at the shape of the headlights, the car the family is in and the stunt car are noticeably different.

Factual error: In the scene where Clark is working on the lights the full moon is shown. This is December 14th according to the advent calendar. On December 24th when Santa's sleigh goes sailing over the moon, it is still full.

Question: What is the name of the Christmas Tree farm they went to to get their tree?

Answer: They didn't go to a Christmas tree farm. He took them to a huge forest to get one most likely because it would be easier to get one free then to pay for one.

They went to a tree farm. After running off the road and jumping the snowbank the wagon crashes through a sign that says "Trees." Clark then says, "We're here...and we made good time too." The humor is Clark forgoes a normal "farmed" tree for the "wild" monster he takes home.

False. They may have run over the tree farm sign, but they absolutely did not harvest a tree from the tree farm.

Answer: They never went to a tree farm. Even though there is a sign that says "Trees", there is no employee there to greet them or even discuss how much the tress cost. Plus, trees on a tree farm are usually smaller and are always lined up in a row. The trees seen by the Griswold's are extremely large and are scattered about like what would be seen in a regular forest which is where they went.

They are never shown in the "store" area of the tree farm, so you can't say that there is nobody working there. They jump the snowbank, it shows them gathering themselves in the car, and the next scene is in the wilderness. It's a small, rundown tree farm, but it is a tree farm business, with a plowed parking lot, garbage cans, lights, other customers, etc. These tree farms usually had pre-cut trees for purchase, but you could also walk out and cut down your own for the "experience" if you wanted to. As someone who has walked a couple miles to get a Christmas tree in December in Minnesota, I can say with absolute certainty that this is accurate.

Answer: It was a tree farm (the car literally flies through a sign that says "Christmas Trees"). There's a deleted scene after they crash and walk to find a tree. Realizing that they didn't have a saw to cut the tree, the family walks to the lot attendant (an odd man, reclining in a lawn chair, wearing a Santa jacket and hat) to ask to borrow a saw. There is a conversation between them where Clark is told that they don't supply saws, but he gave him a shovel. THIS explains how the tree got dug out of the ground. You can actually see a picture of this scene on an old DVD cover.
