Peter Weyland was on the ship the entire time, wanting to find the engineers as an answer to immortality as he is dying. Its also revealed that Vickers is his daughter as they wanted to find out why the engineers created them. Weyland is killed by the engineer by ripping David's head off and smacking Weyland across the face with it, also killing the bodyguards by throwing them across the room with immense power. The Engineer then controls the ship on his way to earth to destroy humanity with the black goo earlier in the film. The Prometheus crashes into the engineer craft, killing Janek and the co-pilots, with Vickers making a narrow escape from the ship. The engineer ship comes plummeting back down to the surface. with Vickers and Shaw in close proximity of the ship, they run away as the ship begins to roll and fall. killing Vickers instantaneously. Shaw enters the medical bay which was ejected along with Vickers after take off. She finds the Squid-like alien which she "gave birth" to mid way through the film, which has also grown to a enormous size. She is briefly attacked by the engineer which survived the crash, and opens the med-bay door to the squid, which grabs the engineer, letting Shaw make a narrow escape from the medbay. David (who was decapitated earlier in the film) speaks to Shaw via com-link telling her to find him on the crashed ship to help her escape the planet. she agrees willingly, rappelling through a hole in the ship later on. A brief shot is then shown with another ship leaving the planet, implying her escape from the planet in the later years. Another shot is then shown of the engineer convulsing and being chestbursted by a prototype species of xenomorph, which screeches at the camera, leaving the film open for a sequel.

Factual error: Carbon dating cannot be used without knowing the amount of C14 in the atmosphere and its evolution in history. Using this method just after arriving at an alien planet is impossible.

Question: As someone who's only seen the first Alien film, which films are necessary (or even helpful) to watch before viewing Prometheus? I understand it's a "prequel" that's only tangentially related to the rest of the movie universe, but I'm interested in getting the full experience here.

Answer: It's a matter of opinion, but watching the first Alien film gives enough of the necessary back story to understand Prometheus. However, it's possible to watch and understand Prometheus without seeing any of the other four Alien films. I would only recommend watching Alien 1 and 2.
