Continuity mistake: Lily and Marshall mention that they've been using the same toothbrush ever since they've been together, but in the 14th episode of the 1st season, "Zip, zip, zip", Marshall and Lily are simultaneously brushing their teeth with a tooth brush each (before Ted and Victoria get home).
Continuity mistake: In Ted's flashback where Barney's mysterious saboteur is talking to Lily, the girl has straight blonde hair. In episode 14, "The Bracket" where his saboteur was first introduced and she originally spoke to Lily, she had curly blonde hair in the same sequence.
Continuity mistake: In this episode, both Ted and Marshall mention that Lucy, Stella's daughter, is 7 years old, when in the previous season (13th episode of 3rd season, Ten Sessions) Stella states: "I have a daughter. Her name is Lucy, she's 8." Did she grow younger?
Continuity mistake: After the gang gets to the bar around the end of the episode, Ted starts his speech about how they all need to move on. As he moves over to the booth, he tells the people sitting there to get out. You can see that the girl takes her phone with her, and there is no other phone anywhere on the table. A few seconds later, she comes back saying that she left her phone, and now the phone is visible on the table.
Continuity mistake: Barney drives fast to prove to his friends that he can talk his way out of a ticket, however in the earlier seasons, when Marshall's car broke down, they tell a story about Barney driving and he cannot drive, and seems to have a fear of driving.

Revealing mistake: While showing the clip of Marshall streaking the first time, you can see thumbnails for videos of him streaking in New York. Those videos were created later that day and could not already be posted. One also shows a woman in yellow and appears to be a retake of the scene.
Continuity mistake: When Ted is giving up with Marshall's best man speech he is holding a pen in his hand as well as a beer bottle. In the next shot the pen disappears and he is just holding a beer bottle. In the next shot the beer is on the coffee table and Ted drops the pen onto the coffee table.
Continuity mistake: In season 5 episode 8, Marshall and Ted are playing on an Xbox 360 Console. If you look carefully, you see that Ted's Xbox controller has no batteries in it, yet he is playing the game with Marshall, and then a few scenes change and so do the batteries. Scene 1, 12 minutes and 23 seconds: Marshall's remotes has a battery in while Ted's is out. Scene 2, 12m 40s: Marshall's Xbox control has no battery in. Scene 3, 12m 51s: Marshall's battery is back in the controller. Scene 4, 12m 58s: Marshall's battery is out again. Scene 5, 13m 44s:Marshall's battery is back in.
Continuity mistake: When Lily is selling her favourite dress and is saying how she got a two syllable damn, the flashback shows her with the hairstyle she got after coming back from San Francisco, even though she said it happened in 2004. She should have had her shorter, lighter coloured hair.
Other mistake: When Ted and Robin borrow Marshall's Fiero and are sitting in the car talking as Ted drives, you can hear the beat of a song playing in the car that is not the Proclaimers' I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles), which in many future episodes is referenced as the only song that can be played in that car due to the tape being stuck in the tape player.
Continuity mistake: In this episode we learn that Barney doesn't know how to drive. But throughout the whole series there are reference that he actually does, such as: In 'Come On' (22th episode 1st season) : Penelope says to Barney: "We had sex twice in your car." In 'Moving Day' (18th episode 2nd season) : Barney drives away with Ted's rental van. In 'The Bracket' (14th episode 3rd season) : Barney stole Holly's SUV as they were camping.
Other mistake: Robin says she burned the dinner because she mistook the temperature scale on the oven for Celsius. However a given temperature above -40 is always higher in Fahrenheit, so by assuming the oven to be labeled in Celsius she would have undercooked the food. For example: If the directions were to cook at 400°F, she would set it around 200°F (thinking the oven was Celsius.) If the instructions were to cook at 200°C, she would still set the oven to 200°F, undercooking the food in both cases.
Continuity mistake: When Lily goes to the bar with her friend Michelle, Barney says "I want her around all the time." It then cuts from Barney to Lily's slightly shocked looking face, obviously from a previous cut/scene change, sitting at the table with them - she should still be walking to the bar with Michelle.
Revealing mistake: When Lily walks into MacLaren's at the end, you can see her pregnant belly bump due to Alyson Hannigan being pregnant during filming. Lily was not pregnant at any time during this season. Even if she did try to cover it up with her coat, the belly bump is still visible.
Continuity mistake: When Robin leaves to get Battleship, Barney thinks they're going to have sex, whips his belt off, and throws it on the floor. When Robin returns, he's neatly folding his pants and draping them over a chair, and his belt is still threaded through the loops.
Continuity mistake: During the flashback in which Barney recounts the story of how he and Ted met (which was previously shown in the pilot episode of the series), there is a green circular plaque (that reads "Winner of the Queen Cup") on the wall in the background which wasn't present in the pilot episode. Also, Barney's left arm is in different positions than it was in the pilot.
Audio problem: When the woman catches Barney doing the naked man, she yells at him to get out. After Barney says "Just have to grab my suit, it's very expensive", she says "Get out!" twice. When she says it the second time, she quickly turns her head and her mouth doesn't seem to move with the audio.
Continuity mistake: At the airport, Lily and Robin are talking off to the side away from others. During the scene, the cameras shoot from in front of the two actors and from behind Lily. From the frontal view, Lily's two headbands are white and gold-jeweled. The white headband is closest to her forehead. When the camera shot switches from front to behind, the headbands are switched on her head. The gold one is now closest to her forehead and the white one is behind.
Continuity mistake: When Lily and Marshall are talking at the apartment, just after Marshall gets off the phone to his friend from work, Lily's necklace changes position between shots. Sometimes it hangs straight down and sometimes it is to one side.
Continuity mistake: In the previous episode "The Wedding", Ted and Victoria first see each other whilst Ted and Barney are sitting together and both drinking champagne. In this episode, when the same glance is exchanged, a bridesmaid is sitting with Ted and Barney, and Ted is now drinking what appears to be whiskey.
Continuity mistake: In the 7th episode of Season 5, the scenes when the "Storm-Trooper" (actually, a robot) passes by the window do not match. The first time we see it, from the outside, as soon as he passes, Robin notices him and points towards him, but the second time, from the inside, she doesn't point at him.
Factual error: The way Barney employs the green screen wouldn't work because a camera is needed to put a picture over the screen. To the naked eye the screen would still be green. The only plausible way to make the illusion work as intended would be a regular white screen and a projector, but this isn't the case here.
Continuity mistake: During the scene back in college, when Marshall and Lily are listening to Dr. X's show, at the first shot of the radio, you can see some popcorn there already, although Marshall has not thrown any, yet. Even if you claim he's been throwing constantly, a few shots later they vanish, and reappear.
Continuity mistake: After Ted's Saturday night party (second of the three), when Ted, Lily and Marshall are sitting on the couch, numerous things change or suddenly appear behind them. Clothing is instantly on the back of the yellow chair and black chair, a wood chair appears, furniture moves, etc.

Character mistake: Once Lily finds out Marshall has accepted the judgeship, she is brought a drink and reveals to the group, "yes this has booze in it, no it's not my first." However, later in the season we find out Lily was drinking non alcoholic drinks the entire time because she believed she was pregnant.
Continuity mistake: In this episode we see that Barney punched a hole in the wall next to the door because Ted broke apart a girl fight. It is supposed to be under the calendar on the right side of the door. It is also said that Ted and Robin were dating at this time. But earlier, in the episode "Wait For It..." (3-1) We see Ted going through his break up phase after Robin. One of the phases is painting the apartment, and there is no hole.
Continuity mistake: When Robin is talking to her sister Katie in the Empire State Building lobby, Katie's bag moves between shots. Sometimes she wears it with the strap hanging straight down from her shoulder, in other shots the strap goes across her chest like a messenger bag.
Continuity mistake: We find out in this episode that Ted and the mother don't get married for several years, due to postponing the wedding when she became pregnant. They eventually get married in 2020, when their children are 3 and 5. But in Lobster Crawl (8-9), at the end of the episode Lily and Marshal show up to babysit Ted's daughter when she's younger than that, and Ted is wearing a wedding ring.
Continuity mistake: Marshall tells Lily that he has never been to the ladies' room of the bar. However in the second season episode "Showdown", Robin catches Lily and Marshall "holding hands" in there. And in "Of Course" in season 5 Marshall, Ted, and Lily go in the ladies' room to comfort Robin.
Continuity mistake: When Ted, Barney and the girls are heading to the South Bronx in the cab, keep watching Colleen's head, near when Barney says, "Somebody's been watching too many Seinfeld reruns", her head moves instantly between shots, from looking towards Ted to looking at Barney.
Continuity mistake: During the scene in "Marshall and Lily's part", after they leave the bathroom, we can see Robin and Virginia (Ted's Mom) talking in the back. Their hand motions do not match the later scene of the "Robin and Ted's part". Obviously, they were shot separately.
Continuity mistake: When Marshall and Ted are on the phone to one another, the string from Ted's hoodie changes position between shots, much of this may be because he is moving his hand due to being on the phone. However the right string goes back and forth from being caught on the collar of his jacket to hanging straight down over his jacket just before he is on the phone to his mother.
Revealing mistake: While Marshall is on the roof putting up Christmas lights he accidentally drops his cell phone, which supposedly then falls to the ground where Scott picks it up and holds him hostage on the roof. But the cell phone can be seen to fall harmlessly into the gutter and can be seen behind the ladder, despite the added sound of it hitting the ground.
Continuity mistake: When the guys are at the bar before going to the awards show, we see Marshall raise his beer to his mouth twice from different angles, without ever lowering it. Also, the amount of beer in his glass changes instantly between the shots.
Continuity mistake: In the scene when Lily yells at Robin, because Lily thinks her wedding is ruined, her hair changes. When Lily screams "Of course I'm not okay." there's only one stray of hair hanging over her left shoulder, but a few seconds later when she screams "Oh grow up Robin." much more hair is hanging over her shoulder.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Ted goes over to Robin's apartment to yell about their breakup, Robin says "You shaved" and "I liked the beard," implying that this is the first time she has seen Ted since he shaved. But the night before she was in the kitchen at his apartment asking if he was okay with her dating Gael. At that point Ted had already shaved.
Other mistake: There is absolutely no reason for Ted to hang around underneath his apartment window while Jeanette is throwing stuff out of it. Any sane person would know that there is a very high chance of getting struck by the myriad of Ted's belongings that are wantonly chucked out onto the street. He's not trying to collect/catch anything because he is turned away from the building, and is not paying attention to the items that are being thrown out.
