Doctor Who

The Impossible Planet (1) - S2-E11

Factual error: Ida, the science officer, says that the planet is in geostationary orbit around the black hole. However, the word "geostationary" applies very specifically to objects orbiting the planet Earth. Since a black hole is a type of star, this planet's orbit could be described as astrostationary, or even just stationary, but definitely not as geostationary. A science expert on an interstellar mission wouldn't make this mistake, and she wasn't dumbing things down, either, since "geostationary orbit" is already a pretty obscure topic for people unfamiliar with space technology. Rose - S1-E1

Revealing mistake: The Doctor and Rose locate the "metal" hatch that leads down into the Nestene Consciousness' lair. Watch carefully after the Doctor removes the "metal" hatch and moves it aside. The entire hatch pops up a second later. This is because it is plastic and it was suctioned to the floor.

The Big Bang - S5-E13

Continuity mistake: When Amy's dad stands up to present his speech at her wedding, a tear runs down the right side of Amy's face. In the next shot of her the right side of her face is completely dry.

The Girl in the Fireplace - S2-E7

Factual error: Madame de Pompadour calls herself "Reinette" in 1727, whereas in actual fact, this was a nickname meaning "Little Queen" which was not given to her until 1730. (00:03:45)

Fear Her - S2-E14

Visible crew/equipment: When the Doctor starts sniffing in a man's garden, just before Rose says she can smell metal, the camera is reflected in the house's window. (00:08:45)

The Christmas Invasion - S2-E2

Audio problem: When the Doctor is proving his identity to Harriet Jones by telling her about when they were trapped together at Downing Street, his words don't match the movements of his jaw when we see him from behind - the timing's all off. (00:40:55)

Rose - S1-E1

Continuity mistake: When the three bride Autons attack Jackie, and they open their hands one at a time, it is clear that when the second Auton opens its hand, all three are already open. After it cuts to Rose, and back to Jackie again, the third one opens (even though we just saw it already open). (00:38:15)

The Idiot's Lantern - S2-E10

Revealing mistake: During the scene in which the Doctor is climbing the transmitter, there is a shot in which he is viewed from above and is then struck by lightning. In this shot, the Doctor's foot disappears briefly as it leaves the green screen on the ground under the actor. (00:38:25)

The Empty Child (1) - S1-E9

Deliberate mistake: When Jack is scanning the gas mask people, he has a scanner on his right wrist. However, when he shows Rose and the Doctor his image of the Chula warship, the scanner is on his left wrist. The makers flipped the stretch of film, according to the commentary, to make the shot work. (00:37:45)

The Next Doctor - S4-E14

Other mistake: When Miss Hartigan is testing the earpod control, the men start off facing her. She instructs them to turn to the right. They turn 90 degrees clockwise. She then tells them to turn to the left. They turn 180 degrees anticlockwise. However, they should have only turned 90 degrees anticlockwise, and end up facing her again. What they actually do is turn on the spot, as opposed to turning left. It takes a further instruction from Miss Hartigan for them to face her again.

The Eleventh Hour - S5-E1

Factual error: When the Doctor spots Rory taking a photo of Prisoner Zero, we're shown a brief close-up of Rory's hospital identity badge. The date of issue is given as "30/11/1990". The main body of the episode is set in 2008, two years before Rory and Amy's wedding in 2010. It's further established in the episode that Rory and Amy played together as children after her first meeting with the Doctor in 1996, with Rory observing that Amy made him dress up as the Raggedy Doctor. Rory could not possibly have worked for the hospital for eighteen years at the time of the episode. (00:33:10)

Suggested correction: Continue watching the show as this is a clue and not a mistake. In later episodes Rory becomes the Last Centurion who watches over Amy for over 1,800 years while she is in the Pandorica. So while Rory was born in 1989, because of time travel and events that occurred to him, he's lived long enough to work at the hospital since 1990.

Bishop73

At that stage, Rory had not time-traveled at all. If he had been working at the hospital since 1990, he would have been a baby. And it was shown in "The Big Bang" that he works as a guard in the Museum where the Pandorica is kept in the alternate timeline, not at the hospital.

Victory of the Daleks - S5-E3

Continuity mistake: When the Doctor is shown talking to the Daleks on their spaceship, he is standing several metres away. But the people viewing him from Earth see him standing right in front of them.

The Unquiet Dead - S1-E3

Factual error: When Rose is locked in the room and the bodies come toward her, you can see a modern-day electric light-switch to the side of the door she's trying to get through. When the Doctor hears her screaming for help and runs for her, you can see a central heating radiator. In fact, the undertaker's house has at least two radiators in different hallways. Both are wildly anachronistic for the time period.

Rose - S1-E1

Revealing mistake: When Mickey closes the wheelie bin lid, he then finds the plastic stuck to his hands, he lifts his hands up and the plastic stretches like tar. If you look closely when he lifts his hands up for the first time, you'll see that a shadow of one of his hands is cast on his shirt, but there is no shadow of the strands of plastic stuck to his fingers. Additionally, when he turns around to pull away from the bin, he crosses the strands over each other, but they are still parallel in the following scene. (00:22:40)

Army of Ghosts (1) - S2-E15

Continuity mistake: At the start when we see Rose on the bus, a bald man sits down on the seat behind her. However, when the camera is inside the bus, he is sitting two seats behind her, without enough time for him to move. (00:00:20)

Dark Water - S8-E11

Factual error: When Clara is speaking on the phone to Danny at the start of the episode her phone shows the call waiting screen for an incoming call from him. (00:02:25)

The Angels Take Manhattan - S7-E6

Continuity mistake: When they are back in the cemetery at the end, the Angel shows up right behind Rory. In the first shot facing Rory, as the camera zooms in on a close-up of the Angel, the Angel's right arm/hand is pointing straight out, and its left open hand is up in a grabbing position. After River asks where the hell it came from, in the Angel's next close-up and all subsequent close-ups, its arm/hand positions are reversed - left hand is pointing straight out and its right hand is up. Yet in every shot of the Doctor, River and Amy together, in the foreground we see the Angel's left hand is up in the grabbing position. (00:37:35)

Army of Ghosts (1) - S2-E15

Character mistake: In an early scene with Yvonne Hartman, she says "We've just measured the ghosts' energy at 5000 gigawatts." There are at least two mistakes here: (1) watts are a unit of power, not of energy (that would be joules); (2) later on, when Hartman is showing the Magnaclamp to the Doctor, she refers to imperial tons and says "Torchwood refuses to go metric", but a gigawatt is a metric unit.

The Runaway Bride - S3-E14

Continuity mistake: When the TARDIS arrives back from the formation of the Earth, the Doctor and Donna rush out leaving the TARDIS door open. And yet in the very next shot, the door is closed. (00:44:30)

Planet of the Ood - S4-E3

Revealing mistake: Soon after the Doctor and Donna are blasted back there is fake snow on the camera, indicating there's a camera there. (00:34:15)

The Satan Pit (2) - S2-E12

Doctor: So, that's the trap. Or the test or the final judgment, I don't know. But if I kill you, I kill her. Except that implies, in this big grand scheme of Gods and Devils, that she's just a victim. But I've seen a lot of this universe. I've seen fake gods and bad gods and demi-gods and would-be gods - out of all that - out of that whole pantheon - if I believe in one thing... Just one thing... I believe in her.

Trivia: "Torchwood" is an anagram for Doctor Who. Russell T Davies came up with it during the filming of Series 1 to label the tapes in order to prevent theft and potential leakage, and decided to use the name in the show proper.
