The One Where Eddie Moves In - S2-E17

Question: What is the song and/or episode of "Baywatch" playing when Joey and Chandler share their famous moment over the phone in this episode?

The One With the Sharks - S9-E4

Question: What's the name of the "scary painting" that Joey saw in the apartment of the girl? The strange and creepy painting (black and white, with an amorphous body and a chair). I really, really want to know who is the artist.

David Cañedo Mesinas

The One With Monica and Chandler's Wedding, Part 1 - S7-E23

New this month Question: Chandler disappears and leaves a note. Monica doesn't know about this. In the same episode, it turns to morning. Phoebe and Rachel are sitting in their morning-robes, after Rachel tells Phoebe that Ross hasn't seen or heard from Chandler. Monica comes out of her bedroom and she says "I'm getting married today!", still not aware of the fact that Chandler hasn't come home. Ross also says later (in the next episode, I think) that he has been looking for him almost all night. So why hasn't Monica noticed that Chandler never came home?

New this month Chosen answer: It's traditional for the bride and groom not to see each other before their wedding day. Chandler and Monica did not intend to spend the night together.

The One With The Dirty Girl - S4-E6

Question: When Joey asks why he can't give Kathy the pen, Chandler says, "Because she's not eleven. And it's not the seventh night of Chanukah." What is Chandler talking about when he says, "It's not the seventh night of Chanukah?"

Chosen answer: Chanukah is a Jewish celebration that occurs around the same time as the Christian Christmas. The celebration lasts for eight days and it is customary to give a small gift on each of the eight days. There is no special gift required and the line about it being "the seventh night" of Chanukah is just Chandler's sarcasm.

Guy

The One With The Jellyfish - S4-E1

Question: When Ross and Rachel are fighting, Chandler hides behind the door and bursts out saying "I knew it." When Rachel says, "It's not that common, it doesn't happen to every guy and it is a big deal.", is this just a Chandler moment or is there another joke I have missed?

Chosen answer: The statements that she's contradicting (that it is common, it happens to every guy, and it's not a big deal), are the things that a woman commonly says to a man who is suffering from erectile difficulty, typically to assuage his bruised ego. However, most men do not believe that these statements are true, as evidenced by Chandler's outburst. He's so caught up in the proof that women are lying about it that he gives himself away.

Rooster of Doom

Answer: Let's go back to Season 3, Episode 1. The Princess Leia Fantasy episode. When Ross and Chandler decide to "tell each other things". Chandler tells Ross that, often times, when he's in bed with a woman. His mom pops into his head so it feels like he's with his mom. Well during the end of that episode, Ross encounters the same problem with Rachel. I'm assuming that he told Rachel about the problem and she comforts him and tells him that it's perfectly normal and that it happens to every guy.

Question: Does any episode of Friends make a reference to the destruction of the World Trade Center towers?

Chosen answer: No, although shortly after the event, there was a "I *heart* NY" seen written on the small message board that hangs on Joey and Chandler's front door. A small tribute, no doubt. Also, during the end-credits of the 2001 Season Eight episode, 'The One After "I Do"' there is a dedication to the people of New York. Joey wears an FDNY shirt as well.

The One With The Ballroom Dancing - S4-E4

Question: How do you spell Rachel's surname? I always thought it was GREENE, but lots of subtitles seem to think it's GREEN.

The One With Rachel's Crush - S4-E13

Question: I think it's in this episode (I'm not sure), but in Central Perk, when Ross and Joey are naming celebrity couples who have been in movies together, Ross mentions Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. What movie were they in together?

Chosen answer: It was a remake of "the Getaway" in 1994.

dgemba dgemba

The One With The Kips - S5-E5

Question: In this episode, Chandler and Monica go on a small trip together. They have a fight because Chandler is too obsessed with watching a car-chase on TV and Monica keeps switching rooms. When they come home, they have a conversation in Monica's apartment where Chandler says "I guess it's over now", to which Monica replies "Why, exactly?" Chandler says " Cause we had a fight" and Monica's respond is "That's silly. If you were going to give up every time you had a fight with someone, you'd never be with anyone longer than...OH!" They both seem to realize something here. What is it??

Rebekka Hildre

Chosen answer: They both realise that one of the reasons Chandler hasn't had a long term relationship is because he assumes a fight means the end of things (together with his generally rocky attitude towards relationships!). Monica never realised that's how he thought, and Chandler never realised that was wrong.

Jon Sandys

Answer: I thought they both realised why Ross and Rachel were never together because basically every time they fought, they broke up.

The One With Rachel's Assistant - S7-E4

Question: A guy sits in the chair by the couch in Central Perk and Chandler just says "no no no no" and asks him to leave. Is it just some random extra, or someone from the cast/crew/a fan? Seems like a part they'd get someone "special" to play. [I get the point of the joke, I'm wondering specifically about the casting of this part!]

Chosen answer: It was just a random extra, who auditioned who the part.

The One With The Mugging - S9-E15

Question: When chandler comes in and asks "Guess what?", Joey replies "Monica's pregnant?". Monica says "Really, okay lets get past the moment". What is this referencing?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: It's not "referencing" anything. It's a joke that Monica excitedly thinks she might be pregnant due to Joey's remark, when the truth is she's not, and knows she isn't, so wants to move on quickly to spare her embarrassment.

Brad

The One With The Halloween Party - S8-E6

Question: Why does Rachel think Gunther is gay? And why does Gunther like Rachel so much?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: Gunther is rather particular about his appearance, keeping his hair carefully cut and colored, and is always wearing well chosen shirts and ties. This is what is commonly referred today as being "metro-sexual" which a lot of people consider to be gay. Gay men (stereotypically) are particular about how they look, so she just assumes. Also, since he is SO in love with Rachel, he doesn't have other relationships to prove her opinion incorrect because he is always hoping she will be single soon and notice him. Who can say why he is so in love with Rachel. Why does ANYONE love someone else? Infatuation? Her looks? Her personality? We will never know. Love is funny that way.

Question: Which episode has Chandler teasing Joey by dancing around Pinnochio-style and singing "I'm a little wooden boy" etc?

Chosen answer: That would be the very first episode of Friends, "The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate", when Joey tells Rachel that he's an actor, and Chandler makes fun of Joey's stint in a production of Pinocchio.

Super Grover

The One With The Stain - S8-E7

Question: I was wondering if any of our good Dutch friends would be nice enough to translate the conversation between Ross and Gunther at the coffee house?

Chosen answer: Ross starts with the correct translation for "Thanks for the coffee". Gunther: "Je spreekt Nederlands?" (You speak Dutch?) "Dat is te gek!" (That's great!) "Heb je familie daar?" (Do you have family there?) And "ezel". Literally translated it's a donkey, but we also use for the word jerk or idiot. And finally Gunther says "Jij hebt sex met ezels" (You have sex with donkeys).

Nelleke Rietvink

The One With The Cop - S5-E16

Question: What is all that stuff with "Zippowitz" and the "Kid from Silver Spoons" about? Who are those two?

Chosen answer: These are references to the TV show NYPD Blue. Deputy Andy Sipowicz is the name of one of the characters, whilst another character (Deputy Danny Sorenso) is played by Rick Schroder who previously starred in the show Silver Spoons.

The One With Joey's Fridge - S6-E19

Question: In this episode there is a lot of reference to what seems to be some American custom I don't get. Monica says to tell Elizabeth that she "wants her cookies early this year" and later Ross orders "one box of thin mints". What is this all about?

Chosen answer: This would be a reference to the Girl Scout cookie selling drive each year, to raise money for the organization. Girl Scouts are typically (not always) known as being younger children. So Monica is making fun of how young Elizabeth is by referring to her as a Girl Scout. The Thin Mint is one of the perennial best-sellers, chocolate-mint wafers coated in a layer of dark chocolate - Ross is saying it so the professor that walks in on him and Elizabeth will think he's just buying cookies.

The One With Ross's Wedding, part 1 - S4-E23

Question: They mention numerous times throughout the series that Phoebe's mother killed herself. Did they ever mention how?

Chosen answer: In the episode where they pack for London and Monica realises that saying check is weird. Phoebe says something like "My mom used to stick her head in the oven. Well, just the one time."

The One With Rachel's Inadvertent Kiss - S5-E17

Question: Monica and Rachel pretend to be watching Ross being stupid at his window, but really it is cardboard cut-outs of Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox but they refer to them as Pammy and Yasmin (Baywatch). This sounds funny, but I understand the joke but don't think it's funny cause it's obviously the actresses (Jenn and Courtney) so are they just poking fun?

Chosen answer: They're cardboard cut-outs of two actresses from Joey and Chandler's favourite show, Baywatch, Pamela Anderson and Yasmin Bleeth. Monica and Rachel's heads were just placed over the faces.

Question: I'd like to know who 'Underdog' and 'Curious George' are. They both pop up around series one (The One where Underdog Gets Away) and Curious George is also referred to by Rachel and Joey in the finale of Season 9.

Chosen answer: "Here he comes to save the day...Underdog..." and "There's no need to fear Underdog is here", are two of the famous sayings that I remember. It was a cartoon that ran in the 60's and 70's. He was modeled after Superman. He was the alter ego of the shoeshine boy/dog. He had a girlfriend/dog named Sweet Polly. Curious George is a monkey that lives with the 'man in the yellow hat' and is a character in children's story books.

Question: When the friends gang can't get in or out of Monica's apartment because they have locked the keys in or out why couldn't the other gang members let them borrow theirs? In the last ever episode it shows them having a key each.

Shadow5

Chosen answer: That doesn't mean they all had keys before the final episode. The lockout incident happened earlier in the series when Rachel was still living with Monica. It could be that after they got locked out, the girls decided everyone should have a key to their apartment to avoid another similar dilemma.

This has Joey and Ross much impressed and the girls are smiling too. Could anyone explain the joke? Or are the friends just being sarcastic at Rachel being relatively 'less' adventurous?

Chosen answer: They are being, as you say, sarcastic.

I noticed on an old Episode from series 6 where the Trade Center Towers are still standing. I thought they might have changed it for the later episodes, but are there any plans to go back an edit episodes featuring shots of the Two Towers?

Chosen answer: No I don't think so. Earlier episodes show the Trade Center Towers in some of their shots but after 9/11 Friends started using new cityscape shots, which makes sense.

Question: When I was watching an episode the other day, Rachel said Richard, Monica's former boyfriend, gave her a little get-well kiss when she was young. This implies that she already knew Monica, as Richard was friends with Monica's dad. With this in mind, and with all relevant characters aside from the main group as well as the six 'Friends' I was wondering if anyone could provide a clear and concise explanation of the backstory to them all meeting, where they lived, school, etc.

Chosen answer: Monica and Rachel went to school together and grew up in the same area of Long Island. Chandler met Ross at college and was introduced to both Monica and Rachel over thanksgiving. After college, Monica and Rachel lost touch, Rachel went off to get engaged to Barry the evil orthadontist, Phoebe moved in with Monica (we've never been told how Phoebe and Monica met, although coincidentally Phoebe mugged Ross when they were teenagers and she lived on the street), and after Kip (Chandler's roommate) left (either to get married or after a bad breakup with Monica, depending on which episode you watch), Joey moved in with Chandler (he was actually a second choice roommate, but Mr. Heckles scared off the first choice). Ross got married to Carol but got divorced due to her lesbianism, and Rachel ended up running out on Barry on her wedding day - she lived with Monica up until Chandler moved in.

Question: What does the insult "Fafanapolie" mean? I don't know if it's spelled correctly but the meaning is what I really want to know.

Question: I've always wondered about this - how is the Friends set/studio laid out? It's fairly obvious that the two main apartments and corridor are one large set with the audience behind the camera (as is fairly standard), but what about Central Perk? Is that part of the same set with the audience...somewhere, or is that filmed elsewhere and shown to the audience separately?

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: Monica's apartment is centre stage, with Joey's on the audience's left, separated by the hallway in between. Central Perk is on the right of Monica's, and stays up permanently because it features in every show. Ross' appartment is on the right of Monica's but alongside the audience. 1. Monica's room and the guest room formerly known as Rachel's room are not set up all the time because they are often used for filming from different angles. When they are set up it is often on a different part of the set. 2. The poster next to Monica's tv hides a camera hole for filming kitchen/door scenes. 3. The street outside Central Perk is also part of the set, not filmed outside. However I am unsure of where this is in relation to the set. 4. Monica's secret closet is actually a door to the backstage area, the shelves featuring in the one with the secret closet were a one time thing. These facts were correct at the end of series nine, details of the layout of the series 10 set are not yet available.

The One With Barry & Mindy's Wedding - S2-E24

Question: In the episode (don't know which one) when Chandler has an online relationship with a girl who turns out to be Janice, is this the first time they meet or has he already dated and broken up with her?

Question: Last year, before Friends had finished being filmed, I read an article in a paper that friends would have a special "Friends Reunited" episode and film it while they were still making the program. Did this happen or was the whole idea replaced with the spin-off series Joey?

Chosen answer: Accorting to Martha Kauffman, no reunion will ever be filmed because, in her words, "reunions tend to suck". So this was probably all just a rumor.

The One With Barry & Mindy's Wedding - S2-E24

Question: In the episode where Richard and Monica break up at Barry and Mindy's wedding, we see that Chandler is chatting on the computer with a girl (that ends up being Janice). When Joey comes in and Phoebe tells him that they are wondering whether or not the girl Chandler is talking with is actually a girl. Joey says, "Ask her how long she is going to live. Girls live longer" and Chandler says, "Why don't you fall down more?" What does he mean?

Chosen answer: Joey has just made an incredibly stupid remark (how would she know how long she's going to live?), so he wonders how Joey is even smart enough to walk. It's just a joke.

Question: Can someone chronicle Chandler and Janice's relationship for me?

Chosen answer: We first meet Janice in the season one episode The One With The East German Laundry Detergent, during which Chandler gets Phoebe's help to dump Janice. Chandler then asks her out for New Year in The One With The Monkey, and once again dumps her before the episode is over. In The One With The Candy Hearts, Joey sets Chandler up on a blind date which turns out to be with Janice. Janice next appears in the season two episode The One Where Heckles Dies - Chandler calls her as is he is feeling lonely, and she reveals she is now married, and pregnant. In The One With Barry And Mindy's Wedding, Chandler falls for a woman he meets online, who then turns out to be Janice. This is the first time their relationship lasts across multiple episodes, as they continue to see each other until breaking up in the season three episode The One With The Giant Poking Device, in which Chandler discovers she has been seeing her ex-husband on the side.In the season four episode The One With All The Rugby, they meet again, and to avoid starting up a relationship with her again, Chandler pretends to be moving to Yemen. This is the end of all romantic involvement between them, although Janice does cross paths with Chandler and the others several times. She is seen for the last time in season ten episode The One Where Estelle Dies, in which Chandler pretends he is still in love with her to try and put her off moving in next door to him and Monica.

Question: What are the differences in ages between the Friends? On the episode "The one where they all turn thirty" Ross comments at the end that they are ALL thirty - but he and Monica are brother and sister. Surely they can't be the same age?

Chosen answer: He means that they have all turned 30 by this point in the series - this episode flashes back to all the 30th birthday stories. Ross & Chandler were in the same college class and Joey states that he is 28 during the second season (TOW Joey Moves Out). Monica and Rachel were in the same high school class, and were seniors when Ross was a college freshman, implying a 1-2 year gap. The run from oldest to youngest is: Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, Ross, Monica, Rachel.

Question: I recently read in a magazine that Lisa Kudrow had to wear a wig for an entire season because of a dramatic haircut that would not suit her character. Is this true and if so which season?

Chosen answer: In Season 6 Lisa Kudrow had a short bob, and as this would not suit her character (couldn't possibly have a short-haired hippy) so they added hair extensions to the end of her hair. In Season 9 episodes she wore a wig, as she dyed her hair brown for her part in the movie 'Wonderland'.

Chosen answer: We never saw what happened after the last episode of friends, we do not know how much time passed between that last episode and Joey's move. I assume at some point after the last episode of friends he decided to move to LA, and I am sure he told everyone at some point. The One Where Ross Finds Out - S2-E7

Question: Did Rachel ever find out that Chandler was the one who told Ross that he's in love with her (The One Where Rachel Finds Out)? Wouldn't Ross want to know when/how she started liking him?

Chosen answer: Season 2, Episode 7 "The One Where Ross Finds Out". Rachel gets drunk on a date and calls Ross - she leaves a message on his answering machine telling him she's "over him". Ross checks his messages in Rachel's apartment, while on his way to get a cat with Julie. He says "you're over me? When were you...under me?" and asks how she found out. Question: How much do the friends make at their different jobs during the seasons? Could they afford the apartments they're living in?

Chosen answer: Monica's apartment is rent controlled so she has no problem. Chandler has a regular job for most of the time he and Joey live together and it's clear that he pays for most of the apartment and related bills. Phoebe stays in various places where she doesn't have to pay and seems to end up in her grandmother's former apartment which may also be rent controlled (or owned by her grandmother and left to Phoebe). The episode with the "they don't know that we know that they know" is "TOW Everybody Finds Out" (14th episode of season 5). The One Where Nana Dies Twice - S1-E8

Question: The Geller family don't get upset or even cry at the death of Nana, and don't mourn that long. Why is this?

Eclipse

Chosen answer: It could be from many reasons. Speaking from my own experience, when an elderly family member has been in a long decline, has suffered from illness and/or age-related maladies, not only is their death expected, but it also comes as a relief that the person is no longer suffering. That may well be the case with the Gellers. We also don't know how long the Gellers mourned, it's not shown. Also, being a comedy show, it's unlikely this is something that will be ongoing in the storyline.

Question: After playing poker for the second time and winning over the girls, the guys say something like "Thanks for teaching us cross-eyed Mary." I assume it is a poker technique, however as a poker player, I've never heard about it. Is anyone familiar with it?

denisg

Chosen answer: I've been unable to locate any information about an actual poker game or technique called "cross-eyed Mary." The only reference I can find to "Cross-Eyed Mary" is a track on the 1971 Jethro Tull album "Aqualung." It's unlikely Joey is referring to the song, so I am guessing it's just something the show creators made up, possibly implying that Monica's aunt taught them a new variation/technique/trick so they could win and they still ended up losing, teaching it to the guys in the process.

The One With The Flashback - S3-E6

Ross and Rachel have had sex numerous times prior to this episode so is the whole joke that Rachel's being sarcastic?

bugmenot

Chosen answer: Everyone, including Janice, already knows that Ross and Rachel, having been a couple, has "done it," so there's no reason for them to say anything, hence why Rachel makes that joke. Janice's question is meant to find out who, other than those two, have had a sexual encounter with each other. Question: In Joey and Chandler's apartment, there is a small sign that reads, "Five card. Charlie pays. Five to One". Can someone please explain to me what this sign means?

Brad

Chosen answer: It's a Blackjack term. A "Five Card Charlie" is when the player Hits 3 times and doesn't meet or go over 21, thus having 5 cards in front of them. It's extremely rare, so there is a bigger payoff for the player than simply beating the dealer's hand. (It's also at the House's discretion whether or not to allow them as a win, thus the sign advertised that whatever gambling establishment it was taken from DID consider it a big win with appropriate payout.)

The One With Ross and Monica's Cousin - S7-E19

My question is, why don't they ever say the word in this episode? When Joey and Monica talk about it they skirt around it, would the censors really have such a problem with it?

Chosen answer: It's a fairly standard humourous device to not actually name the thing you're talking about, especially when it relates to something a little risque. Also note that during the whole show, Joey tends to avoid talking about such intimate subjects with anyone but particularly the girls. Avoiding the word is just one way of reducing the embarrassment.

Chosen answer: Tenure: the status of holding one's position on a permanent basis without periodic contract renewals. It is frequently granted to professors at universities, and is a valued commodity as you then know you will continue to have your job as long as you like, unless you do something egregious. Escrow: monies put aside, into a third party's hands, to be delivered only upon fulfillment of specific conditions. It ordinarily comes up in the process of buying a house - you place money in escrow to show good faith and the ability to pay your mortgage, and the builder only gets it upon completion of the home.

Question: At the start of the episode we see the end of Joey's appalling show, listing the executive producers as Colleen Mahan, Eric Goldberg, and Missy Krehbiel. Missy Krehbiel is assistant to David Crane, Friends writer/producer/creator, etc. Anyone know who the others are and what their link to the show is?

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: Colleen Mahan and Eric Goldberg also work on the show they are assistants to Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane.

The One With The Prom Video - S2-E14

Question: When they see Ross' old hairstyle in the video, Joey says "lookin' good Mr Cotter". What does this refer to?

The One With The Baby Shower - S8-E20

Question: When Joey asks the question about triskaidekaphobia Ross jokingly answers "a fear of triscets", what's a triscet, if anything?

Chosen answer: A Triscuit is a cracker that is made of wheat or something. You set them out at cocktail parties with crab cake or something. You understand it a little more when you hear his next line, something about the sharp edges.

Question: The very first episode of Friends includes Rachel leaving Barry on their wedding day and coming to live with Monica. The rest of the group are already friends. But I know I've seen an episode which has Phoebe moving out of Monica's, Joey moving in with Chandler and making a move on Monica. It also shows Central Perk as a bar, before it gets turned into a coffee bar and Ross anouncing him and Carol have broken up. In which episode does this happen?

Chosen answer: "The One With The Flashback", series 3.

Question: TOW the Proposal. Eventually Chandler asks Monica to marry her. Why does Monica say later on that she asked Chandler? (This is when she gives Phoebe advice about her wanting to get married to Mike).

Chosen answer: Because initially Monica set up the room with all the candles etc to ask Chandler, she got down on one knee and then starting crying saying "there's a reason why girls don't do this" so Chandler knelt down too and they kinda asked each other.

Question: During the opening credits one season we see a hand gesture where they smack both their fists together twice. Does this gesture have any meaning?

Chosen answer: On episode No. 405 "The One with Joey's New Girlfriend," Monica explains the story behind the hand gesture: "It's this dumb thing that Ross made up because he was trying to fool our parents. It's a way of giving the finger, without actually having to give it. I remember I cried the night he made it up, 'cause it was the first time that I realized that I was actually cooler than my older brother."

The One With Two Parties - S2-E22

Question: When Phoebe has taken Mrs. Greene to the bathroom, Chandler says to Monica, "Think, what would Jack and Chrissy do?" Who are Jack and Chrissy?

Chosen answer: Jack and Chrissy are two of the three main characters from "Three's Company." They, along with their roommate Janet, always got into weird situations, mostly involving misunderstandings about what was going on. They always came up with completely off-the-wall ways to get out of the situation.

The One After Ross Says Rachel - S5-E1

Question: After we come back from the break, with Ross asleep on Monica and Chandler's lap, the riff that plays in the background is really familiar to me. I know I can play it on guitar and the name Robben Ford springs to mind. Has it been in a film before or is it taken from a full length song?

Chosen answer: Ironman by Black Sabbath.

Question: In the UK at least, new box sets have just been released of all 10 series (3 discs per box). Does anyone know if these are double sided or single sided discs? The original DVDs were double sided, which always seemed stupid.

Jon Sandys

Question: When Phoebe's mom died she went and lived on the street. But why? I am sure they had a house. Why would someone take it away from them?

Chosen answer: Phoebe's mom died, and her stepfather was in prison. If Phoebe and Ursula did have a house, I'm sure they were too young to be able to keep it up and pay the bills themselves, since Phoebe said she was living on the street by the age of fourteen.

The One Where Ross Finds Out - S2-E7

Question: I was just wondering if anyone could name the song which plays when Ross bursts into Central Perk and kisses Rachel for the first time. It's a big 80's guitar power song and I really recognise the riff but can't think of the band or song.

Chosen answer: The producers wanted to use U2's "With or Without You" as the background clip for Ross and Rachel's kiss; however, there wasn't enough time for them to arrange for the necessary rights. Instead of the song, a studio clip similar to the band's playing style was used.

Question: One of the trivia points is that the etch-a-sketch in Joey's apartment always has a picture on it linked to the show. Are there any examples of this?

Chosen answer: Some of the things shown on the MAGNA-DOODLE are shown on this website http://members.home.nl/rody.klaassen2/STUFF/magnadoodle.html. Reportedly, they were drawn by Paul Swain, the best boy (a crew member), and though some of them had something to do with the show, some were inside jokes for the crew.

The One With The Donor - S9-E22

Question: Chandler and Monica are told that aside from adoption there are two ways for them to have a baby, either using a surrogate or a sperm donor. But if Monica would be able to carry the child of the sperm donor, and a surrogate would be able to carry Monica and Chandler's child, wouldn't Monica be able to carry Chandler's child using the same process as used with a surrogate?

Chosen answer: If (just) surrogacy is an option, that means that IVF using Chandler's sperm and Monica's egg must be possible. If (just) a sperm donor is an option, that means that Monica must be capable of carrying a child. So, yes, with the situation as presented by the doctor, Monica could have carried Chandler's child after IVF. The only rational explanation would be that the doctor misspoke, and should have said that they would need both a sperm donor -and- a surrogate (because Chandler's sperm couldn't be used in IVF and Monica couldn't carry a child at all). This was simply a mistake made by the writers.

Question: In what episode does Joey try to look nineteen years old? There is a scene where he comes out dressed ridiculously, and asks if he looks nineteen, to which Chandler replies, "On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most looking like an idiot, you're easily a 19."

Chosen answer: The first episode of the 7th season. The One With Monica's Thunder.

JCT05

The One With The Jellyfish - S4-E1

Question: After Ross and Rachel break up the 2nd time, Rachel yells, "Just so you know, it's not that common, it doesn't happen to every guy, and it is a big deal." What is she referring to?

Chosen answer: It is one of two things, one being his inability to achieve or maintain an erection while they are going at it, and the second is premature ejaculation, both of which Ross would be mortified about.

Super Grover

The Last One (1) - S10-E19

Question: I was watching an old episode of Friends and was wondering, what ever happened to the duck and the chicken that Chandler and Joey own?

Chosen answer: Much like a lot of things in sitcoms there are certain aspects that get fazed out temporarily or completely because they don't fit the story line. However, in 'The Last One', Joey mentions that the chick and the duck went to live in a special farm when they grew old; meaning that they died of old age. In the same episode Rachel confirms this when she asks "Didn't they die?"

Shadow5

Chosen answer: There's a behind the scenes feature on a Friends DVD that shows an example: In "The One After Vegas"(Season 6 premiere), Chandler's line was originally "I don't think they're as much dating as they are drunk." Matthew Perry thought the line wasn't funny and came up with the alternative seen in the episode: "I don't think they're as much dating as they are two bottles of vodka walking around in human form."

The Last One (1) - S10-E19

Question: Does Rachel get paid quite a lot of money at her job (Ralph Lauren)? She shops at Chanel and Prada, and in the last episode she has a large Louis Vuitton shoulder bag, which I know is quite expensive.

The One Where Ross And Rachel Take A Break - S3-E15

Question: What exactly is a Shemp? I think that is what Rachel said in this episode when she hung up the phone at work. "There is a Shemp in my office"?

Chosen answer: Rachel is referring to one of the The Three Stooges, which consisted of Moe, Larry, Curly, and also Shemp. Curly Howard, the third Stooge, was later replaced by his real-life brother, who played Shemp. Curly and Shemp played the most unintelligent and bungling member of the trio.

The One Where Joey Moves Out - S2-E16

Question: When Jack and Judy are talking in the bathroom, Jack says something like "It's like a scene from 'Cocoon'." I haven't seen 'Cocoon', so can someone tell me what he's talking about?

Chosen answer: In the movie Cocoon, some retired elderly people swim in a pool with some alien cocoons in them. The energy produced from these cocoons gives them a new lease of life, giving them more energy like when they were younger. Jack's reference to the movie in relation to Richard is that he is acting the same since he has started seeing his "twinky" (Monica).

The One Where Underdog Gets Away - S1-E9

Question: Please tell me if this true: out of all six, is it only Joey and Monica who have not kissed each other?

Chosen answer: No, Phoebe and Monica have not kissed each other either. Ross and Monica kissed in college (we find out in series 10) - she was asleep on a bed and Ross thought it was Rachel covered by coats. Ross and Chandler may have kissed - in "The One Where Chandler Doesn't Remember Which Sister", it's implied he drunkenly kissed Monica, Rachel, and Ross, but Ross may just be joking.

The One Where Rachel Tells... - S8-E3

Question: How do you access the easter egg for this episode to see the other story line about Monica and Chandler in the Airport?

The One Where Monica and Richard Are Just Friends - S3-E13

Question: Does Marcus Flanagon, who plays Robert, also play the guy Rachel is talking to in Central Perk before Ross 'saves' her in TOW the Prom Video?

Chosen answer: Actually, the one in TOW the Prom Video is Tim Bohn. Markus Flanagan is solely Robert.

The One With Russ - S2-E10

Question: Why does Joey make all that pasta sauce?

Chosen answer: I think it's because he was so disturbed to find out his Dad was having an affair. People do strange things when they get bad news... eat lots of ice cream, retail therapy etc. For Joey, being of Italian descent, his reaction was to make lots of pasta sauce.

Dr Muppet

The One In Barbados, part 1 - S9-E23

The One With Joey's New Girlfriend - S4-E5

Question: Does anyone know what the song is at the end of the episode The One With Joey's New Girlfriend? It plays for about five seconds when Chandler asks if he can sleep on Monica's couch.

eagle203

Chosen answer: It isn't a song in its own right. It's incidental music. It sounds like a variation in the style of "I'll Be There For You."

Michael Albert

The One with Mrs. Bing - S1-E11

Question: When we first see Mrs Bing on TV, Jay Leno mentions that she recently got arrested and asks how it came about. Her response is "occasionally, after being intimate with a man, I just get a craving for Kung Pao chicken" This gets a lot of cheers and laughter from the audience and Chandler shouts "that's too much information!" at the TV. What was happening here? Why does what Mrs Bing said get so much of a reaction from everyone and not answer the question she was asked? Am I missing something?

strikeand

Chosen answer: Nora Bing, Chandler's mother, is a famous author of steamy romance novels. Like many celebrities, she deflects direct personal questions by giving a non-direct answer. In this case, she gives a somewhat titillating response that amuses the audience by ambiguously implying that after having sex, she has a need to rush out for Chinese food and that resulted in the escapade getting her arrested. Chandler is constantly embarrassed by both his parents, and his mother in particular because he feels she does not act her age and is sexually uninhibited.

Question: I read the trivia about Bruce Willis having to star in Friends for no fee, but he was in more than one episode. Did he only do ONE for free?

The One With Phoebe's Uterus - S4-E11

Question: When Phoebe is sitting on the couch with her mother, having just received the puppy, towards the end you can see a strange thing sitting on the couch behind/next to her. I can only view it on a small screen, but it looks like a phallic shape. It would make sense, considering that her mother makes erotic pottery, but is that what it is?

Chosen answer: It is one of Phoebe's mother's sculptures. Whether or not this particular piece is erotic is debatable, but it can be defined as "non-objective" abstract art, meaning there's no recognizable shape or subject to it.

raywest

The One Where Ross And Rachel Take A Break - S3-E15

Question: Why did Ross and Rachel take a break? I don't mean break up, I mean why did Rachel suggest taking a break?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: Rachel was tired of Ross' constant insecurity over their relationship and his unfounded jealousy over Mark, Rachel's co-worker. Ross was also fed-up because Rachel had become overly obsessed with working, and was not spending enough time with him. When Rachel said she wanted a break, it was in the heat of an argument. The next day she wanted to immediately get back together, only to discover that Ross had slept with the girl from the copy center within hours of their break-up.

Question: Can someone explain why there is no door to Monica's balcony? Is it normal to climb out a window to get on to the balcony in these types of apartment buildings? It doesn't seem like something that would be allowed due to building regulations.

Chosen answer: There's never been an explanation about why there was no door, but it's supposed to be an older building, and theoretically there could have been a laxer construction code when it was built and inspections were less stringent. There could conceivably have once been a door there, but, for whatever reason, it was made into a window. Of course, this likely would never have happened in real life and it simply makes it more humorous for the character to have to climb in and out the window to utilize the balcony. Also, the size of the balcony changes over the course of the series and the fire escape comes and goes.

Question: I, and some other people, remember an episode in which Monica's obsessive-compulsive tendencies have so annoyed her employees in the restaurant that they lock her in a refrigerator. Some other people do not remember this, and my best efforts looking through plot summaries have not turned it up. Searching with Google on Monica and refrigerator has not helped. So does someone know where it is, or approximately where it is? Thank you.

Philip L King Jr

Chosen answer: This is season 4, episode 10, "The One With The Girl From Poughkeepsie". Everyone who works under Monica hates her after she got their old boss' job in an earlier episode. She hires Joey just so she can fire him to bring the others in line, but he's enjoying the money so doesn't play along. At one point they lock her in the walk-in freezer, where she gets covered in marinara sauce. This makes her so upset that Joey relents and lets her fire him.

Question: How did they film the Phoebe and Ursula parts when both of them were in the same room?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: A lot of these scenes are shot over the shoulder of one or the other character, if you watch closely, the one whose back is to the camera is often a double. For the most part, they'd film one character's part, reset and have Lisa Kudrow change clothes, then film the other one's part. It's the same technique used in "The Parent Trap" (Lindsay Lohan) and a couple of Eddie Murphy movies ("The Nutty Professor" and "Norbit", that I know of).

Question: Just wondering, did any of the Friends actors have a falling out while filming the show?

Marko1215

Chosen answer: Probably the only known conflict among them was when Matthew Perry had issues with prescription drugs and alcohol; the other Friends helped to pressure him into seeking help during the series' run. Other than that, it appears the six had a pretty close relationship. They've apparently not all been together in a long time, but that's largely due to scheduling issues and that some of them are naturally closer to some of the cast than others.

The One With The Cheap Wedding Dress - S7-E17

Question: When Monica is showing Chandler the dress, she tells him that she's booked the Swing Kings, so she got what she wanted. Why didn't she just keep the dress she wanted because she got the band for Chandler?

Chosen answer: The woman who tried to grab Monica's gown at the wedding dress blow-out sale retaliated by booking the Swing Kings for the same day as Monica and Chandler's wedding. She would then only let Monica have the Swing Kings if Monica agreed to give up the wedding dress. Even though the woman's behavior was despicable, Monica honored the agreement to ensure that Chandler would have his favorite band at the reception - if she'd kept the dress after booking the band the other woman could well have retaliated. Question: Why does no one ever sit on the window bench, behind the desk? It seems to be there for no apparent reason, the only person I've ever seen sitting on it was Rachel. Why does no one ever sit on it?

Eclipse

Chosen answer: Unless there is a specific plot reason for someone to sit here, such as when Rachel was moping after her first break-up with Ross (when he made "the list"), it does not serve the overall story well. A character would be sitting far away from where the central action takes place, making it more difficult for them to interact with what is going on. Also, a window bench is not that comfortable to sit on, and the other furniture is far more inviting.

Question: What is the function of Rachel's/Monica's guest room's wall across the door? Isn't it just annoying to get in? I also noticed that there's a screen across Monica's door. Why are these here?

Eclipse

Chosen answer: This has been mentioned before. The wall and the screen serve no purpose other than to block the audience's view into the bedrooms from the living room. When the storyline does not require the characters to be in the bedrooms, then the stage area behind them would likely be bare or otherwise incomplete, which the viewer is, of course, not supposed to see.

The One With the List - S2-E8

Question: Joey tells Monica and Phoebe that the list was Chandler's idea. So how come no one thinks to tell Rachel this? Ross could've just fessed up and saved himself a lot of trouble. And, furthermore, how come everyone else later tells Rachel that the list was Ross' idea?

Brad

Chosen answer: It would hardly have mattered to Rachel who actually suggested writing the list. What did matter was that Ross participated in it and that he gave very unflattering reasons (such as she's spoiled and is just a waitress) about why he should not be with her. As for the others blaming Ross, they apparently feared Rachel's anger and/or felt guilty for being involved.

The One With The Kips - S5-E5

Question: Can someone please explain the concept of 'Mad Libs'? I'd never heard of this before watching Friends, therefore the scene in which the characters are playing it doesn't mean much to me.

Chosen answer: Mad Libs is a series of game books that require the reader to fill in blanks with words in compliance with descriptions below the blanks (adjective, verb, etc.). The reader then writes the words they chose on a separate sheet of paper, on blanks in certain places in the middle of a story on that page. The point being, that, once the words are filled in, the story usually sounds silly and random. The joke in the episode is that Phoebe used the same word over and over again.

Question: In episode 'The One With The Videotape' we get to know the story 'how Ross and Rachel got bonus night'. What I wonder is does anyone know the whole 'Western Europe' story or is it (unfortunately) one of those stories that doesn't have ending at all, because there's no need of one?

Chosen answer: There is no ending. The DVD commentary includes the writers saying they never wrote the whole story, only the set up.

The One Where No One's Ready - S3-E2

Question: I don't get the joke when Chandler says to Joey "So, in the words of A.A. Milne, get out of my chair, dill-hole." Can someone help me with this?

Chosen answer: A.A. Milne is the name of a famous author, but of course he never said "Get out of my chair, dill-hole!" Chandler is setting us up for a deeply philisophical comment only to deliver a crass insult.

Phixius

The One With Russ - S2-E10

Question: Is the guy who plays Russ Ross with a fake nose (or make up), because the credits say Snaro plays Russ, but it looks so much like Ross so can some one tell me who plays Russ.

Chosen answer: It is David Schwimmer playing Russ. A couple of behind-the-scenes Friends books say that he chose to put this in the credits as a tribute to a friend.

Dr Muppet

The One With Phoebe's Dad - S2-E9

Question: I don't get the joke when Chandler says "Don't you have to be Claymation to say stuff like that?" Can someone explain this?

Chosen answer: Monica just said "You guys haven't gotten your presents yet? Tomorrow's Christmas Eve, what are you gonna do?" It's a reference to the sappy dialog in all those Rankin/Bass claymation Christmas specials. Google "claymation" if you're after a description of the technical side.

Myridon

The One Where Eddie Won't Go - S2-E19

Question: Why does Rachel compare the book they are reading to 'The Hobbit'?

Chosen answer: It sounds kind of like a fantasy book, the hobbit is just about the most famous fantasy book ever written.

The One After the Superbowl, part 2 - S2-E13

Question: When Phoebe pulls Monica and Rachel's ears, she says something like "If we were in jail, you guys would be like, my b****es." What does she mean when she says this?

Chosen answer: It means that Phoebe now has control over Monica and Rachel. If they were in jail, Monica and Rachel would now be something akin to Phoebe's slaves.

Guy

The One With Two Parties - S2-E22

Question: When Rachel is sitting on the step outside and Chandler runs out chasing a girl saying 'Ok you be shirts and I'll be skins.' What does he mean by this?

Chosen answer: If you're playing team sports and the weather is favourable then one easy way to know who's in which team is to have one team keep their shirts on and the others not. Hence shirts and skins, clearly if girls were playing there was scope for fun.

tw_stuart

The One After Vegas - S6-E1

Question: In the breakfast scene, Joey is informed that it is a self-serve buffet, and he says "This is where I win my money back." What does this mean? Does he intend to place bets with people about how much he can consume?

Chosen answer: He means he will eat so much of the casino's food that it will make up for the money that he lost to the casino by gambling.

Question: There is a noticeable change in the lighting in the first season compared to the rest of them, does anyone know why this is?

Chosen answer: Normally first seasons of a show do not get the budget that established shows get. It is possible after the huge success of season 1, the show got a better budget and better lighting.

Question: I was just wondering, how they choose the audience? Do the people just go up and ask if they can be in the audience or id their some special criteria?

Chosen answer: Behind the scenes documentaries show that it's just a case of getting to the studio very early and waiting in line for tickets, however, for the final episode made a specially selected audience made up of the cast's family members were the only ones allowed in, to conceal the surprise.

The One Where Ross Dates a Student - S6-E18

Question: In the episode, Series 6, The One Where Ross Dates A Student, in the scene where Ross, Chandler and Joey all talk about Danny Keystone (and most of the episode), they are all wearing exactly the same sweater in orange, blue and green. It's so weird because I've never seen them dressed so co-ordinated and I was wondering if there was a story behind it?

Chosen answer: Well, if you look very good you can see that they don't wear exactly the same sweater. Ross's sweater has a little V-neck and they are all differently sewed.

Show generally

Question: Does anyone know where I can find images of the art displayed in Monica's apartment, in particular, the art in her bedroom?

Chosen answer: You can buy them at http://www.shoptvweb.com/product/696.php

The One With The Baby Shower - S8-E20

Question: When Rachel's mother appears in this episode she looks (no disrespect intended) terrible compared to the last time we saw her. What happened to the actress playing this part?

tw_stuart

Chosen answer: After extensive research on the internet, I couldn't find any stories to explain this. It would not be unreasonable to say that Marlo Thomas had not appeared on the show for 6 years - last time we saw her she was 59, and in this episode she is 65. She is an ordinary woman who works hard, and simply looks older.

He's My Brother

The One With Ross's Teeth - S6-E8

Question: When Chandler tells Monica he needs to be in 'a guy place', she suggests that he goes and 'hammers up some dry wall'. What does this mean?

Chosen answer: "Dry wall" is a US term for plasterboard-type boards used for making partition walls between rooms. Basically, she is telling him to go do some manual, physical "manly" work.

Eliza

Season 1 generally

Question: Does anybody know why the actress Anita Barone was replaced by Jane Sibbett as Carol Willick after episode 1.1? I know this kind of thing happens all the time, but I wondered if there was a particular reason.

Chosen answer: From tvtome.com: Anita Barone had auditioned for one of the three female leads in the show, but didn't get the part. The producers then offered her the recurring role of Carol. However, after only one episode as Carol, Barone decided that she was looking for a more full-time role and left to look for other opportunities, being replaced by Jane Sibbett beginning in episode 9.

The Last One (2) - S10-E20

Question: At the very end of the whole show, what is the name/title of the song that plays out over the montage of them going downstairs, and subsequently over the apartment?

Chosen answer: The song at the end is called "Embryonic Journey" by Jefferson Airplane.

Kelly Weidenfeld

The One With Chandler's Dad - S7-E22

Question: Chandler tells Monica about how his father has tried to get in touch with him over the years but Chandler's always had an excuse not to see him. He says "it's all very 'Cats in the Cradle'". What does that mean?

Chosen answer: It's a reference to Harry Chapin's 1974 song of that name, about an inconsiderate father too busy too spend time with his son. The son then treats his father the same way later in life. Ugly Kid Joe also had a hit with a cover version in 1993. See http://www.birdsnest.com/catcrad.htm.

Question: Does anybody knows what the "your love life's DOA" means in the title song?

Chosen answer: DOA is an acronym meaning "Dead On Arrival". It is usually used in a military or medical context. However, in this case, it means there is no sex being had.

SexyIrishLeprechaun

The One With The Lesbian Wedding - S2-E11

Question: Slightly more wide-ranging a question than just Friends, but it's relevant at the moment. With Massachusetts being in the news for offering same-sex weddings, and apparently being the first state to fully sanction it, was the wedding in this episode (back in the mid '90s) based on any then-current law, or just made up for the purposes of the plot?

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: Same-sex weddings have been performed for quite some time in the United States. They simply didn't have the sanction of law or the benefits (and costs) that come with it. The ceremonies were purely for the sake of the supporting friends and family of the couple making the commitment.

K.C. Sierra

The One With The Halloween Party - S8-E6

Question: When Chandler tells Ross to relax because he's looking a little flushed, what's the joke here? I miss some details

tw_stuart

Chosen answer: Ross claims he came to the party as 'Spud-nik (the satellite)' but admits he's really 'doodie'. The flushed (as in toilet) remark is another 'Poo' joke.

umathegreatstationarybear

Chosen answer: A blimp is a large flying "balloon". Sort of like a hot-air balloon without the basket. There is a "control deck" on the bottom. Also known as a zepplin. The Goodyear (tire) blimp is the most famous.

Ral0618

Show generally

Question: What happened to Ben? He's been missing ever since series 7 or 8.

Chosen answer: He's hardly "missing" - he was only ever an occasional guest character. He has appeared once or twice, but since none of the plots really involve him, Carol or Susan, he hasn't been in it that much.

Shay

Show generally

Question: What is the episode called (and which series) when everyone reflects on what may have happened? It involves Monica still being overweight and Chandler is a computer geek.

Chosen answer: It's called 'The One That could have been' and it's from series 6. Two parts.

Kara

The One With The Lottery - S9-E18

Question: In this episode, I think that it is Ross who mentions a person called Amelia Earhart. Who is she?

Chosen answer: Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. She and her navigator (Fred Noonan) were lost July 2, 1937, en route from Lae, New Guinea to Howland Island - the plane was never found.

Garlonuss

The One Where Monica Sings - S9-E13

Question: Whatever happened to Gavin? He seemed to disappear after he and Rachel kissed.

Chosen answer: Gavin was transferred back to his original post in Ralph Lauren, after Rachel told him she felt guilty if anything happened between them.

Show generally

Question: I don't remember the episode, but I think it was in season 6, there is reference where someone calls someone else "Tennille." Who's that?

Chosen answer: One of the most successful duos in pop history, Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille. A husband and wife singing team, known as The Captain and Tennille.

Super Grover

The One Where Ross and Rachel...You Know - S2-E15

Question: What is the name/artist of the song that plays over the scene with Ross and Rachel in the planetarium?

Chosen answer: "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaac.

Jane Doe

The One With Ross's Teeth - S6-E8

Question: Maybe I'm just stupid or this is an American joke, but in the scene where Chandler tells Monica he needs to be in a guy place, she says something like: "Girls don't have pillowfights in their underwear." and he gets all shocked. Why? Does he want them to? Or not?

Chosen answer: It's just a typical bloke fantasy - when women are together and in a playful mood they have pillow fights in their underwear. We all like to think it's true, so Monica telling him it's not gives him a scare.

Jon Sandys

The One With the Holiday Armadillo - S7-E10

Question: In the scene where Chandler and Monica are in the restaurant and she wants him to bribe the waiter he says something like "Calm down O'Malley." Who is O'Malley?

Chosen answer: He just used the name as a joke, since she was very excited and "knowledgeable" about bribing the waiter. Somewhat of a throw-back to the old mob days in New York.

Ral0618

The One With Joey's Big Break - S5-E22

Question: When they are playing the game I dont even understand half the questions, maybe they are American-based, for example who are Simon and Garfunkel? Any explanations would help.

Chosen answer: Simon and Garfunkel were singers Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon, and they were a folk/rock duo popular in the 1960s and early 1970s. They sang "Bridge over troubled water" and "Mrs. Robinson," but split up due to personal and creative differences. They had since rejoined with a recent tour together. A quick Google search would probably tell you more.

Kara

The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate - S1-E1

Question: In the very first episode, there is a scene in which Ross is in his apartment, talking to Joey and Chandler about his failed marriage to Carol, and is worried that there is only 'one woman' for everyone. Joey encourages him to 'grab a spoon' - to which Ross replies: 'Do you know how long it's been since I grabbed a spoon? Do the words 'Billy don't be a hero mean anything to you'? Well the words 'Billy don't be hero' mean very little to me, so I'd be grateful if somebody could fill me in on this. Thanks.

JoeyJoeJoe

Chosen answer: It's a song released in 1974, earlier than he met Carol (1988) but he's probably exaggerating for comic effect - it's been that long since he grabbed a spoon. It also means that he is unadventurous and too scared to 'grab a spoon' and take the opprtunity. The song was about a kid in the war who wanted to be the hero and get up and fight.

When Rachel finds out that Ross and Julie are getting a cat, watch Rachel's neck. When she says "together?" she's not wearing a necklace; cut to Ross and Julie for a fraction of a second, then when it cuts back to Rachel saying "both of you?" she's suddenly wearing a necklace. It then disappears again when she says "isn't that just lovely?" hanging off the side of the tray she's holding.
