License to Drive (1988)

Factual error: When Les is pulled over by the cop, he has Les open the trunk to reveal Mercedes in there passed out drunk. Les told the cop she was his date. The cops then get a call to report to the scene of the riots. The cop told Les he got off lucky. No cop will spot a body in the trunk of the car and let the driver off scott free. Even if the person in the trunk appeared drunk, Les would have been put in handcuffs and taken to the station until it was all cleared up. Even if they were called to handle the riots, the cops would have told dispatch what was going on and taken care of the Les problem instead.

Question: When Harry enters the Great Hall after Voldemort calls a break to the battle so Hogwarts can bury their dead, who is it that Professor Sprout and Professor Trelawney cover up? It was so quick I was unable to see it.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: As Harry enters the Great Hall he passes Sprout dabbing at a male student's head wound (we see Sprout and this student again later in the background as Ron realizes his brother Fred is dead). After walking past Sprout, Harry comes across Professor Trelawney and Parvati Patel. Trelawney murmurs, "She's gone," and then she and Parvati pull a blanket over the still form of a girl. All we see of her is a quick glimpse of her nose and nostrils before her face is covered This student is Lavender Brown, who in the film was killed by werewolf Fenrir Greyback. The film writers took the liberty of having Lavender die at the end, confirmed in the movie tie-in book "Harry Potter: Page to Screen." However, J. K. Rowling left it ambiguous in the novel whether Lavender Brown actually died from her injuries.

General questions

I watched a movie (in the nineties, maybe late eighties) and I could have sworn a character was played by Kevin Bacon, but I have checked his films. The movie was based on a young woman who moved or arrived back into a town and she keeps on seeing a ghost of a little girl. There was also maybe an apparent murder or mystery in that town and Kevin Bacon was a young local who worked in a car workshop. From my memory she was warned off him, he was somewhat frowned upon, maybe from locals? She eventually got into a relationship with him and as I recall they had a love scene in a lighthouse? I just cannot remember the name of the movie or any actors. (This is not Stir Of Echoes as previously answered. In Stir Of Echoes Kevin Bacon and his son see the ghost of a teenage girl murdered in their house. He was already married and no scene in this movie took place in a lighthouse). So another answer to this question will be appreciated.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Could it be "Buried Secrets" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115788/)? If that is the case, the actor was Channon Roe, not Kevin Bacon.

Fright Night (1985)

Question: Why didn't the holy water work? What did Jerry holding the vial over the fire have to do with anything? Did that somehow make the water un-holy?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Because it wasn't real holy water. Peter Vincent never believed that vampires were real, and was simply humoring the boy. He probably filled the vial with regular water.

Answer: Evil Ed phones Jerry to ask if they can bring Charlie over to prove to him that he (Jerry) isn't a vampire. Jerry lies to them that he is a born again Christian, and he thinks crosses would be sacrilegious. Peter Vincent: "Ask how he feels about Holy water." Evil Ed: *To Jerry, "How about holy water?" *To Peter, "No, won't do, either." Peter: "Tell him it's just ordinary tap water, all he has to do is sip it!" When Jerry drinks the water, Charlie says, "It's not possible," Peter says, "No vampire can drink blessed water," Charlie realises it's a scam and says, "It wasn't blessed."

Angelus73

So basically, Vincent was lying all along, just to give himself the satisfaction of proving Charlie wrong, even though Vincent made the remark, "Are you calling me a liar, young man?"

Shallow Hal (2001)

Question: In the scene where Hal, Rosemary, the cripled friend, and Nurse "Sourpuss" go out of town, Hal and his friend got to buy snacks leaving Rosemary and "Sourpuss" to talk. There is a scene where thy cut to the front of the car and Nurse "Sourpuss" is now good looking. So is that her real look and Hal only sees her as old and ugly?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Yes. Just as Hal sees many unattractive and/or overweight women to be thin and beautiful due to their true personalities, he sees Nurse "Sourpuss" - who is a beautiful woman - to be old and ugly due to hers.

Jeff Swanson

Answer: At that point Hal and his friend had already turned their backs and went to the store so Hal was not even looking at her.

Answer: I thought maybe Hal's outlook was rubbing off on Rosemary and Rosemary was seeing that less than attractive woman as pretty.

Question: In the scene where Juno is talking to Adam and Barbara in her office, look out the window behind Adam and Barbara. There is a group of people who look like they are watching TV and eating popcorn. One of them looks like Otho, wearing a suit and sunglasses. Is there any significance to this?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: It's not meant to be Otho. It's a theater full of ghosts. The idea being that, when this film was still in theaters itself, the audience got the impression that they themselves were being watched by ghosts on "the other side" who were also at a viewing of Beetlejuice, watched from the opposite perspective.

Question: Did the old man really die at the end or was this just a ploy to give Clark the money for considering him part of the family? It all seems too fake. Winking, paramedics not doing anything to revive him, barely checking to see if he is alive, etc.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Typically people don't give a knowing wink to someone when they are at death's door. I think what the paramedic says was the case. He just really wanted to feel like he belonged to a family. He met them, and they included him, so he wanted to "give back". This was the way he could.

Question: How does playing blackjack in casinos work? There is a scene where Clark gets a blackjack but the dealer keeps drawing cards for himself until he gets 21 and calls it a tie. I thought when you get blackjack you automatically win, unless the dealer also gets blackjack then it is a push. However someone told me that if the dealer gets blackjack the dealer automatically wins, even against a player who also has blackjack and it is not a push. Clarification please?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: There are numerous rule variations for blackjack, but most casinos will rule that blackjack beats any other hand, even one of 21, and if both player and dealer have blackjack, then a push is given. There are certain rulesets where a tie is awarded to the dealer, but these are rarely used except occasionally in charity events where dealer takings go to the nominated charity.

Lost (2004)

The End (2) - S6-E18

Question: I recently submitted a question about whether everyone died on the plane or on the island. The answer I got was unsatisfactory. The answer was they did not all die in the plane crash but on the island where the events in the show really did happen. If this is the case, everyone in purgatory at the end makes no sense. If they all died on the island, then where were other characters like Michael, Ecko, etc. Also how did Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Ben, etc. end up dead and in purgatory at the end of the series? Last we saw them they were still alive on the island. Are we to assume that everyone died at the end of last season when the bomb went off? I need more info here.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: None of the main characters died in the plane crash. Many died on the island after the crash (Jack, Charlie, Sun, Jin, Daniel, Juliet, others), some lived on the island for an apparently long time after the crash (Hurley, Ben, Bernard, Rose) but some lived lives off the island after the crash (Sawyer, Kate, Claire, Miles, Aplert, and Lapidus). Remember that Christian tells Jack that "time has no meaning here," (in Purgatory). When everyone meets at the church, they are at the end of their lives however long that may have been and will now "move on" together. They look like they did on the island because that is the way they best remember each other.

The End (2) - S6-E18

Question: OK, I am confused. I know the characters are really dead and they are in purgatory. But did they all really die in the plane crash and the events on the island was their purgatory or was their revealing that they were dead as a result of them dying on the island? If they did indeed die in the plane crash, where was Michael and Walt in the finale? If it was as a result of them dying on the island, then how did Kate, Hurley and Sawyer end up with the others in purgatory? I don't recall them dying on the island.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: No they did not all die in the plane crash. Everything that happened did happen... They all died... eventually. Their souls appear in 'purgatory' together and move on together. their 'lives' in purgatory was what they believed it to be. Time really has no meaning in 'purgatory', so they all appear to each other as remembered.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Gunny Highway insisted that they all wear the same shirts as he himself was wearing. If they showed up in a different one, he made them go shirtless. The reasons for this were 1) to break through their rebellious attitudes and teach them to follow his orders, 2) to make them look and feel unified, and 3) to develop resourcefulness and adaptability in them.

General questions

I am looking for a movie that was a direct to DVD movie. It had 3 or 4 stories in it. I remember the first story had a man fighting toy soldiers in his penthouse apartment. The last story had a couple where their car broke down in a small town. The town was being run by dead celebrities (Elvis was the sheriff) and the celebrities forced the visitors to stay and watch them perform every night. Anybody know the name of this movie?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: These stories were not from a movie, but from an anthology series called "Nightmares and Dreamscapes" that was shown on TNT in 2006. All of the episodes are based on Stephen King short stories. The first one you mentioned is called "Battleground" and the second one is called "You Know They Got a Hell of a Band".

Question: I have a question regarding the looks of Mulder and Scully. In the movie they looked very old. Was this purposely done to age the characters in the movie because it's suppose to take place in the future or did the actors just age horribly in real life?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: They have hardly aged "horribly" in real life. Both Scully and Mulder are now middle-aged, and a significant amount of time has passed since we first met them. The movie picks up some years later, and therefore there was no attempt to make them look like their younger selves. Mulder, who is now nearly 50 years old, has undergone the most significant change since leaving the FBI under less than amicable circumstances, and his appearance (unkempt beard, casual clothing) reflects his more solitary life. Scully is focused on her demanding career as a doctor, not her looks.

Question: Don gets a call from the French verifying that the blind samples Don sent confirming their virus and the AIDS virus were the same. Don goes around the CDC office and tells everybody that the French also had the AIDS virus. This causes everybody to cheer. Why would the French having the virus make everybody cheer?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: It represents a breakthrough in the case - a lead to the original source of the virus, as many of the patients being treated in France were either African or had spent time there. Up until that point, the origin of the virus was a mystery - with the knowledge that the French were treating the same virus, it gave them vital information in backtracking where the virus originated. It also proved that AIDS was a worldwide phenomenon of epidemic proportions, something that a number of agencies had been reluctant to accept up to that point.

Tailkinker

This is not an accurate answer. When they say the French had the virus, they don't mean patients with the virus. They mean the French successfully found the virus in blood, which is a necessary step in determining that aids is caused by an infectious agent and the first step in coming up with medication. The French had patients with the virus since about the same time as the us.

Continuity mistake: Towards the end of the movie when Don cannot sleep and goes to the cafe where he sees Jim, he enters the cafe and it is dark and raining. A few minutes later during the shots where the camera is on Jim, the window is behind him and you can now see it is very light outside.

The Karate Kid (1984)

Question: In tournament action, is the crane kick an actual legal move to use? How about the stance to start the move?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: There are no rules about how a fighter must stand before throwing a kick, and it's basically just a jumping front kick, which is completely legal.

Answer: It was not the technique that was illegal but where and how he made contact with Johnny that was illegal. I'm not 100% sure how to describe what is wrong with it but it is the spot he made contact with and that he kicked Johnny with intent to hurt him (witch may seem weird but believe it or not point based karate sparring is in fact a non-contact sport somehow).

In the film, there was nothing illegal about the contact he made, nor was it determined he had an intent to harm. Bobby was disqualified for an excessive and deliberate attack, but he also intentionally kicked the leg, which was not a part of the body to earn a point. What you may be trying to describe as illegal was lack of control. The ref even says to watch the control. It could be up for debate about if Daniel had control over his kick, but in the film, the ref found it acceptable.

Elf (2003)

Question: I am confused. Buddy has blood drawn in order to do a DNA sample and they get the results almost right away. Doesn't it take weeks for DNA samples to come back? If so, how can they get the results so quickly in the movie?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: More than likely, it was done for storyline reasons. Since the results of DNA tests *do* take a while to come back, it slows the plot down to show them waiting. I guess, in a way, this situation calls for a suspension of disbelief; it may seem like it took no time at all, but in order to enjoy the film, you have to just accept that the necessary waiting period has passed.

Cubs Fan

There's an old story where someone asked a major sci-fi producer how fast one of his space vehicles could go. He answered, "At the speed of the plot."

Answer: It was most likely a blood typing test (it can take minutes and its done through a finger-stick test). If the doctor's office had the test cards. If both parents have type A blood, their child can't have type B and vice versa with type B and A. Type O is rare enough that its more likely that Walter and Buddy's mother were either type A, B, or AB. -college student who has rewatched the movie and had to go through several allele genotype/phenotype lectures.

Actually, type O is the most common type. O - is more rare than O+, which is true for every blood type, but O is still the most common for most ethnic groups.

Answer: Most private labs can return DNA testing results in 1-2 days because the test isn't that complicated, even in the early 2000's. It's usually court ordered testing that take weeks to process because of all the bureaucratic red tape, paper work, and signatures required. Some labs do get extremely busy and therefore it might take up to 2-4 weeks to get results back, but that also usually includes more extensive DNA testing.

Bishop73

Answer: Even so the test came back almost immediatly.

lartaker1975

Yes, but again, for the sake of moving the plot along, Walter needs to know that Buddy is his son. The movie could not drag along while they were sitting around waiting for DNA results.

General questions

Does anybody out there know what Hollywood puts in the hair of an actor playing a vampire to make the hair so slick and shiny? I have asked at least 3 costume shops and could not get an answer.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: For movie production, it could be anything from simple pomade, to hair gel, to school glue. There's no "standard" method. Glue would be the easiest to style with, it would hold the hair in place the best, and make the hair quite shiny. It takes two or three vigorous and lathery scrubs to get it all out when you're done, but it will wash out.

Plot hole: When Professor Lowe calls Dieter Perez to tell him about his findings on Earth 1, Perez makes note that one of the viables was named Voorhees and deduced it was Jason Voorhees. How did Lowe know it was named Voorhees? 1) Rowan at the beginning acknowledged she had yet to prep the chamber which means no paperwork. 2) The students found no paperwork when they found the chamber and had no time to look for paperwork once they realized they needed to get Rowan to a lab to save her right away. 3) Rowan did not give him Jason's name when she first woke up. This is obvious in the scene after Lowe talked with Perez he was talking to Rowan and she brought up the story about Jason and he acted like he never heard the name before. Question: I could never understand this in any of the Matrix movies. They need to go to a phone that is ringing in order to leave the Matrix and go to the real world. And why can't they just use their cell phone they have on them in order to get back to the real world?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: It has to be a hard line phone, one that is part of the matrix code, that's been previously hacked by the rebels. There's a network of them throughout the city, and the operator directs them to the nearest one after activating it. Their cell phones won't work because they aren't part of the matrix; they're loaded in just like the guns and clothes. It's possible the "hard" aspect of the phone also translates to a literal physical connection in the real world which the rebels can connect to.

However later, Audrey is told the EMP would not harm Jack or Paul. It would only affect all electronic devices. So why would Jack need to find protection behind a door and why would he need to scream when the device went off?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: The device is an EMP that is in development and, as such, may not be stable. While its true that an EMP in itself is harmless to people, there may be electrical discharges or shorts from the device itself that could harm a person, hence Jack takes cover. As for his scream, its not a scream of pain, but a scream of frustration at not being able to stop the EMP going off.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: I would assume a "thrall" basically a ghoul that is attached to the vampire. As she is being pulled out she reaches out to Chris and screams "Brad, Brad" a few times. Brad was her boyfriend whom they killed a few scenes before. But she was with Chris and not Brad so she should have called for Chris instead of Brad.

Trivia: Initially, Corey Feldman was asked to reprise his role as Tommy Jarvis, but since he was busy shooting "The Goonies," the character was re-written to be a few years older, and John Shepherd was cast. Feldman did appear in a brief cameo during the opening dream sequence.

Trivia: In the scene where Alice finds Bill's body hanging on the back of the door to the generator room, the producers purposely did not tell Adrianne King what they were going to do to the body nor did they let her see the body beforehand. When she saw the body during filming it was for the first time. The scream she produced was genuine as it scared her badly. Needless to say, that entire scene was shot in one take.

SAZOO1975

Deliberate mistake: After Chris gets stuck on the bridge and is trying to restart the van, a shot out the back window shows Jason running towards the van. He is badly limping and holding his knee because Chris just stabbed him in the knee. In the next scene, when Jason is chasing Chris away from the van, and for the remainder of the movie, Jason no longer limps. He walks and runs normally.

Question: On IMDB, the bio for actor Sean Kanan who played Mike Barnes, stated that he almost died during filming of this movie. However the trivia section states nothing about it. Does anybody out there know what happened that caused him to almost die?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Kanan performed his own stunts, and during one of these he was injured with an internal bleeding, which was not discovered until later. When he took aspirin for the pain, combined with his injuries he went into hypovolemic shock and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Plot hole: When Jason is going next door to chase after Trish, he pulls Jimbo's body down from the doorway and begins walking towards Trish's cabin. He is seen walking by himself. Continuity mistake: At the beginning of the movie when Jamie leaves his father, his stepmom Ella follows him and his father's head remains in an upright position. However at the end of the movie when Jamie has a flashback of everything that happened, it shows Ella was using his father as a puppet. In the flashback sequence when she lets go of his father to follow Jamie, his father's head automatically drops on his chest and does not remain upright like it did earlier.

SAZOO1975

Continuity mistake: Not long into the movie, Reni is looking for her dog. Next time we see the dog, it is on her lap in the life boat. Between these two scenes they never show her finding the dog: it just appeared out of nowhere.

SAZOO1975

Continuity mistake: In part 7, Tina uses her powers to split the hockey mask in two. In some shots you can see the straps of the mask cut into the back of Jason's head, leaving large cut marks. However in this movie when the mask is removed, the cut marks are not there.

SAZOO1975

Trivia: Interesting note. The cook that Jason threw into the mirror at the diner is Ken Kirzinger, who went on to play Jason Vorhees in the movie "Freddy Vs Jason."

SAZOO1975

Plot hole: Jason all of a sudden can drive a boat and out of nowhere, seems to know about a cruise ship filled with teenagers ready for him to kill. Yeah, makes sense to me. Especially since there is land with buildings right where Jim and Suzie drop anchor on their boat. Jason gives up killing people in those buildings to drive to a cruise ship that he cannot possibly know about? Also the fact that the survivors get to New York and minutes later Jason just happens to pop out of the water? Are we led to believe that he not only learned how to swim to New York but he managed to not kill everyone while they were in the life raft?

The Karate Kid (1984)

Question: During the final fight scene after Daniel scores the 2nd point, Johnny goes to have his Kreese check his nose. When he was done, Kreese told Johnny to "Sweep the lick." What did he mean by this?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: He told him to "Sweep the Leg" meaning to concentrate his attack on Daniel's knee. Johnny balked at this since he would be disqualified, but did it anyway out of fear.

papajim

If Johnny was disqualified for sweeping the leg then why didn't Daniel immediately win? Why did the fight instead continue with the final crane kick scene?

Actually means to show no mercy.

Answer: Johnny wouldn't get disqualified. Kreese wants him to do 'sweep the leg' to punish Daniel for a while instead of having Johnny go straight for the win. Johnny questions it only as it's not very sporting to sweep an already injured leg.

Johnny COULD have been disqualified, but for story purposes, he received a warning. Then, when he elbowed Daniel's leg, he got one last warning. The referee told him another strike to the knee and he'd be disqualified. The main antagonist being disqualified is incredibly anti-climactic. Nobody wants to see that in a film. You want the good guy to kick him in the face.

The Karate Kid (1984)

Question: This is in regards to the tournament in this movie and in part 3. Is it compatible to tournaments in real life? In real life, are they physically hitting each other or do they pull back on their punches? What do they do in the tournaments in both movies that is not allowed in a real life tournament?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Without knowing the exact style of karate, it is impossible to answer. I perform in martial arts tournaments but we wear various protective gear and are prohibited to strike at targets like knees (as in the movie) but are also prohibited from "excessive" contact on legal targets. My brother-in-law, though, does another style - and he won a match by kicking a person so hard he broke ribs and the other participant couldn't continue - so my brother-in-law won the match. Different styles differ. Back in the 70's and 80's "Point sparring" was very popular. This is where the contestants pull their punches only making light contact. This was considered a good skill to have as it taught one control their punches and to learn distance. It was very boring to watch and with the development of safer protective gear point sparring pretty much went away.

Question: In the beginning credits of movies/t.v. shows, when they say "and introducing" followed by the actor's name, it is because it is the 1st acting role for that actor. In this episode when the introduced Quinn's brother, the beginning credits say "and introducing Charlie O'Connell." However he has done other acting roles before he appeared on Sliders. As a matter of fact, he did 2 episodes on Sliders as a different character before he became Quinn's brother. So is there a reason why the actor was "introduced" in this episode?

SAZOO1975

They knew that Alice was the key to taking back the zombie infestation, so they were trying to get the "perfect" clone. The perfect clone would have all of her memories and reactions, so they put the clones through that testing facility. If she made it out alive, then she was the perfect clone. Jason X (2001)

Question: When Professor Lowe calls Dieter Perez to tell him about his findings on Earth 1, Perez makes note that one of the viables was named Vorhees and deduced it was Jason Vorhees. My question was how did Lowe know it was named Vorhees? 1) Rowan at the beginning acknowledged she had yet to prep the chamber which means no paperwork. 2) The students found no paperwork when they found the chamber and had no time to look for paperwork once they realized they needed to get Rowan to a lab to save her right away. 3) Rowan did not give him Jason's name when she first woke up. This is obvious in the scene after Lowe talked with Perez he was talking to Rowan and she brought up the story about Jason and he acted like he never heard the name before. So how did he get Jason's name for his report to Perez?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: There is a certain difference between filling out paperwork and preparing a chamber for cryogenic freeze. Rowan may have reserved the cryo chamber for Jason, filled out the forms and put his tag on it, but she had yet to prep it properly (check that every detail was in working order, maybe run a test, re-check, etc). So there may have been a tag on the chamber with the name "Vorhees" on it, Rowan just did not think of this as "prepping".

Question: After Marti's father returns to her and Andy, they are driving through the base. Marti's father tells her not to show emotion because they can be fooled. She looks at him and realizes he is one of them. What was different about him that made Marti realize the truth? Her dad was acting normal and I could not see him giving anything away so what did I miss?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: I actually just watched this movie again today and I think it was because he was acting too calm and quiet. Marti might have got suspicious from the slight change in his personality. He also wasn't sweaty anymore and didn't have that white patch on his cheek that you can see in the previous scene when he picks up the phone in the doctor's office.

Answer: Before Steve ran off to find help the baddies were chasing them, when he reappeared the pod people just ignored them. Then he was driving someplace that was not an escape route, which, I believe, was what first tipped Marti off. And because he repeated the same exact line.

Alan Keddie

Question: This question was asked and answered but the answer was unsatisfactory so I am asking the question again. It was asked if it was common for the President and General Grey not to know about area 51 and the answer was given that because of plausible deniability, the President would not need to know about area 51 until the aliens arrive. This answers the question for in the movie but what about in real life? Wouldn't the 2 most powerful people in charge of the military (The President and The General) in real life be made aware of area 51? I can understand if the president is not made aware but I find it hard to believe the General wouldn't know about it.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: General Grey is listed as being Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which does not make him the second-in-command of the military - that position rests with the Secretary of Defense, who, as we see in the film, does know about Area 51. Grey, as Whitmore's primary advisor on all matters (not to be confused with the President's Security Advisor, who, in all likelihood, would be aware of the installation's existence as it would fall directly under his area of concern), would need to be covered by plausible deniability just as much as his boss would. As such, Grey holds what is very much a need-to-know position - with regard to Area 51, he doesn't need to know.

Question: A question was asked of what kind of drink Pernod was. It was answered that Pernod was a aniseed aperitiv. What does that mean exactly? What is the definition of aniseed aperitiv? Also a question was asked what difference did the drink make when the waiter added water. The answer given was very unsatisfactory. It was answered by saying water turned the drink from clear to cloudy white. This is obvious as we can see it in the movie but how does adding water to this drink affect the drink itself (besides changing color)?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: What was meant was an anise aperitif. Anise is sort of a licorice flavor, while an aperitif is an alcoholic beverage served as an appetizer or with finger foods. I believe it turned cloudy white because the waiter added sugar water. It makes the bitter alcohol more palatable. This drink tradition was begun with absinthe, which was banned in many countries and Pernod is a similar-tasting replacement.

Question: At the end of the movie the remainder of the 54th Mass top a cliff, look down and see a bunch of soldiers waiting for them who then fire on them. My question is what happened to the rest of the 54th Mass? did they die in this scene? Did they survive? It is never explained and during the burial at the mass grave none of the soldiers who ended up at the cliff are seen being put into the grave nor do you see their bodies on the ground.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: While the film deals with factual events, the only real character is Robert Gould Shaw, so, historically speaking, it cannot be stated exactly what happened to the characters based on historical grounds. However, only about a quarter of the regiment were actually slain in the real battle, with slightly more captured. Bearing that in mind, it's not unreasonable to speculate that the characters on the cliff were either captured by the enemy or managed to retreat.

Tailkinker

Answer: The movie states that over half of the 54th perished in the battle. As for your question regarding the soldiers in the fort: if you are referring to the group consisting of Forbes (Cary Elwes) and Rawlins (Morgan Freeman), while no definitive answer is given, it can be assumed that they died as well, likely as soon as they were fired upon.

General questions

Numerous times mistakes have been corrected saying it is a character mistake, not a movie mistake. This has always confused me. The words performed by the actor are scripted by writers and scenes are filmed under the direction of its director. Since it is written in the script and accepted by the director and producer, how is this still a character mistake and not a movie mistake?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: In real life, people make mistakes. Just because someone in a movie says or does something wrong, it doesn't make it a mistake because it does happen in real life. A regular character in a movie stating that there are 268 bones in an adult human body could just be a way to show that character doesn't know what he/she is talking about and not really a mistake. A doctor making that same statement would be a mistake because the doctor SHOULD know better since it is his/her job.

Question: It was said earlier in the show that the Atlantis crew did not have enough power to dial Earth. Earth Control had no idea of the fate of the Atlantis crew until they sent the video package telling them what was going on, then Earth Control sent reinforcements to help out. My question is; if Earth Control was able to send reinforcements to Atlantis to help out, why could they not send a crew to check on the status of Atlantis? They knew the Atlantis crew made it in the 1st episode.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Because the ZPM allowing them to dial Atlantis was being used at the Antarctic defense outpost. They couldn't risk making Earth vulnerable to attack from Anubis by depleting it with repeated dialing to the Pegasus galaxy. Once they knew Atlantis was in serious danger, they had no choice.

Grumpy Scot

Chosen answer: No, there's nothing illegal about any of the weapons they owned. Some of them may have required a Class 3 firearms license, but even this is not difficult (just expensive) for a law-abiding citizen to obtain.

Answer: In some parts of the US, especially in far-out desert towns, home arsenals like this are the norm. There is really no limit on how many firearms or ammo American's can own. Machine guns are illegal, but can be permitted. If you have any semi-auto firearm, it's not hard to convert to a machine gun. Albeit, the firearm will fail apart fairly quickly from the abuse.

SAZOO1975

I know they sneaked onto the ship, but nobody who saw them questioned them or recognized them as the pirates who tried to kill them before.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Pintel and Ragetti (the one with the wooden eye) are pirates. They are basically loyal to themselves and adapt to whatever the situation is that best serves their own purpose, rather than out of loyalty to anyone else. They'll serve under whoever offers the best motive or profit for doing so. The same goes for the captains. If they need a crew, they will utilize whoever is available at the moment, even if they know they've been disloyal in the past, as was the case when Jack allowed them back on his ship. This is a bit of a "running gag" in the series that the characters are constantly betraying one another.

Deliberate mistake: As Joey is running down the street and having things blow up all around her, you can see other people walking on the sidewalk not reacting to the destruction around them, even when something blows up just a few feet from them.

Question: When Dom and Bryan return to Dom's house after the police chase, Vince sees Bryan and asks Dom why he brought the "buster" there. What did Vince mean by calling Bryan a "buster?"

SAZOO1975

Answer: "Buster" is a slang term for someone who thinks they are cool but are not. It's kind of like saying "wannabe." It can also be generally used to simply describe someone uncool, without the pretense. In this context it is most similar to "dork." Either applies in Bryan's case, at least in Vince's eyes.

BaconIsMyBFF

Answer: Because Brian busted his car in the race.

Chosen answer: Calling him "buster" implies that he was the one that got them all busted. Like being a "narc" or an informant.

Don't think this would apply. He's first referred to as buster when he walks into the Toretto household by Dom after the first race. Before he reveals he's a cop to Mia and then later to Dom while calling an ambulance for Vince.

Question: I hear after the credits, there is an extra scene where you find out what happened to Dom. Can anybody describe this scene for me?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: The scene starts in Mexico where you see a Chevelle driving through the desert. It is driven by Dom who says that he lives his life a quarter of a mile at a time.

Vin15Nets

Question: It is repeated that Bryan owes Dom a 10 second car. To me, a car has 4 wheels and an engine. What is a "10 second car"?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: It's a car with the power to do a quarter-mile drag race of the type depicted in the film in ten seconds.

Cabin Fever (2016)

Question: What was the whole "pancake" scene all about? I understand the director had the kid doing karate for the movie because he was impressed with it. But what does the kid yelling "pancake" have to do with karate?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: Pancake is the name of Henry's dog, he shouted it after he found his dog dead by the disease. If you are wondering who Henry is, it's the guy at the beginning who got infected first in the film, and I guess the kid screaming it obviously knew what happened to Henry, he obviously knew Henry and Pancake.

Answer: When they bring Paul to the hospital he sees a person in a bunny suit holding a needle and a plate of pancakes over a kid. Maybe Dennis was there before.

Road House (1989)

Continuity mistake: When Jimmy finishes beating up the bouncers, he uses the pool stick to do a flip onto the stage. In a distant shot, it shows him bringing the pool stick at the fat bouncer's neck to aid in his flip. In a close up shot, it shows the pool stick at the fat bouncer's side. (01:22:05)

The Monster Squad (1987)

Plot hole: In order to get rid of the monsters, Phoebe needs to read a text from Van Helsing's diary in order to summon the vortex. As Dracula approaches her, she becomes scared and misses on some words (the Scary German Guy is helping her read since she is 5 years old and she doesn't repeat some of the words he says). However the vortex still shows up to get rid of the monsters.

Suggested correction: It is never specified that the incantation must be read verbatim to work.

BaconIsMyBFF

It also never states that reading only part of the incantation would work either. However, the mistake is still valid because the way to get rid of something evil by reading some "spell" you'd have to read the entire thing. Therefore the virgin shouldn't have been able to summon the vortex.

lartaker1975

Since "spells" are entirely made up and magic isn't real, you can't say that in this film every word must be read for it to work when the film itself shows otherwise. Every film gets to make it's own rules with magic, this film establishes that the incantation can be read "in spirit" to work. Other films might have different rules.

BaconIsMyBFF

It's always been implied in movies and books that incantations must be read word for word in order to work. Otherwise, what's the point of having all the words there if you only need to read a word or 2?

The Monster Squad (1987)

Plot hole: The army showing up at the end of the movie is wrong on numerous levels. 1) Eugene wrote and sent out the letter that day. I find it hard to believe the mailed letter got to the army in just a few hours time. 2) How did the army know to show up at time square? When Eugene wrote the letter, nowhere did it say where to meet. Plus the boys didn't decide to go to time square until the last minute. 3) since when is the army deployed to battle monsters based on a letter that was written by a child?

Suggested correction: The army's arrival being unrealistic is a very deliberate joke, like the armadillo-rats from earlier in the movie.

I submitted a category change to "Factual Error" to help cover this. It is indeed too deliberate to be a true plothole, but it is nonetheless amusing to point out all the ridiculous ways this humorous scene defies believability.

The Monster Squad (1987)

Audio problem: In the mansion, the boys open a secret passage and fall through the floor. They scream after shining a flashlight on a skeleton. Eugene then can be heard whining that he wants to go home, but his mouth is not moving.

SAZOO1975

Question: This is pertaining to the dice game where the crew were betting their years as part of Davey Jones's ship. Did anybody understand how the game worked. What was the purpose? What was the deal with the numbers they were calling out?

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: This is a real game called Liar's Dice, specifically the Common Hand variation. The idea is to predict, or pretend to predict, what will appear when the dice are finally revealed; for example, a call of "six fives" is a claim that, when the dice are revealed, there'll be six (or more) fives showing. Each player, however, can only see their own set of dice, so must guess what the other players have, based on what bids they make. The game proceeds with each player having the choice to either raise the bid to a higher level, or challenge the preceding player's claim. Once a challenge is made, the dice are revealed; if the challenged bid is shown to be correct, the challenger loses; if it's shown to be false, then whoever made that bid loses.

The Monster Squad (1987)

Deliberate mistake: When the vortex is summoned to get rid of the monsters, other things get sucked into it. Cars, trees, light poles, other police officers. However other things or people who are more accessible do not get sucked in. For example, Phoebe hiding behind a bench, the bench itself, Phoebe's mother and a few cops hiding behind a cop car, etc.

The Monster Squad (1987)

Continuity mistake: When Horace is confronted by the Gillman and has picked up the shotgun, he looks inside and sees E.J. and another kid hiding behind the counter. Horace begs them to let him in. E.J. and the other kid shake their heads no and lower themselves behind the counter. A few seconds later, a distant shot shows the two shaking their heads and lowering themselves behind the counter again.

Silent Hill (2006)

Question: Can somebody out there explain the ending for me? It made no sense. Someone told me they believed the mother and daughter, as well as the cop died in the accident and they were trapped in the town. However I don't buy that as the father and the other police found no bodies in the crash.

SAZOO1975

Chosen answer: They did not die in the accident. Rather, Alessa's rage and the demon's power caused the town of Silent Hill to fracture into at least three different "dimensions" that we know of (the real world, "fog world" and "other world", plus potentially others). Rose and Sharon are unfortunately stuck inside of one of those alternative realities. The sequel also confirms that they are very much alive.
