The Big Bang - S5-E13

Question: If all the stars have gone out, then how come it is light out when Amelia and her Auntie Sharon are going to the museum? If all the stars had gone out, it would have been dark, since the Sun is a star.

Shadow5

Chosen answer: You are correct, the sun was erased with every other star in the universe. The thing keeping the Earth warm and light is the TARDIS, which exploded and is now exploding at every moment in history.

A Christmas Carol - S6-E1

Question: When The Doctor shows young Kazran his future, older Kazran touches his younger self. He did this without an explosion, however, in 'Doctor Who' it has been said that 'if you touch your younger self, it will create an explosion'. How did the older Kazran, in this episode, touch himself without an explosion?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: It creates a paradox, which isn't always an explosion, but can be. And it doesn't do it in this case for the same reason that the controls no longer operate for Kazran: The Doctor's intervention in his life has caused him to not be the same man he was before.

Doctor Who (2005)

Chosen answer: In one way or another, eight times. He dies twice in the episode "Amy's Choice", once in each of the two dreams, firstly killed by an Eknodine in the Leadworth version of the dream, then again when the Doctor blew up the TARDIS in the other dream to allow them to escape it. He's then killed by the Silurian Restac in "Cold Blood", shortly before his body is consumed by the cracks in time, erasing him from history completely. He returns as an Auton duplicate, restored from Amy's memory, in "The Pandorica Opens" - this duplicate is destroyed in "The Big Bang" when the universe is reset, although some memories live on in the human Rory recreated in the rebooted universe. He died again in "The Curse of the Black Spot", but was successfully resuscitated by Amy. He's seen to die of old age in "The Angels Take Manhattan", then kills himself in the same episode by jumping from a high roof (as does Amy) to set up a paradox to eliminate the Angel threat. He then finally dies off-camera at the age of 82 after having been sent back in time by a surviving Angel, having lived out a long and happy life with Amy.

Cold Blood (2) - S5-E9

Question: If Amelia can remember the people in 'flesh and stone' when they stepped into the 'W' crack, how come she can't remember Rory after he is taken at the end of this episode?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: The Doctor said Amy remembered the clerics because they weren't part of her life, but Rory was. That's why the clerics forgot about the other clerics, because they are part of each other's lives. So you can still remember people being erased from time if they are not part of your life.

Victory of the Daleks - S5-E3

Question: When they are talking about the Daleks at the end of this episode, this is what they are saying: DOCTOR: It's not that. There's something else. Something we've forgotten. Or rather you have. AMY: Me? DOCTOR: You didn't know them, Amy. You'd never seen them before. And you should have done. You should. (They go inside the Tardis and it dematerialises, revealing a glowing w shaped crack in the wall.) My question is: What is the Doctor meaning by what he is saying to Amy?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: The Doctor is referring to the events of the two-part finale of the fourth series of the relaunched show, "The Stolen Earth" and "Journey's End". These episodes featured a major Dalek invasion of Earth, something that Amy should remember. What concerns the Doctor, leading to the conversation you refer to, is that she apparently doesn't, because if she did, she'd have recognised the Daleks the moment she saw them.

The Eleventh Hour - S5-E1

Question: Is the reason for Amelia's crack due to the fact that in series 7 'Angels take Manhattan' she gets zapped back in time, and the crack is there to put those two parts of her life together?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: No. The cracks in time were caused by the TARDIS exploding on Amy's wedding day. The reason why they were at the locations they were at was because the Doctor was there.

MasterOfAll

Doctor Who (2005)

Chosen answer: Amy and Rory travelled with the Doctor for a long time in their lives, alternating between travelling with him and long periods (some as long as two years) having a normal life at home; Amy specifically states, I think, that they do their best to try to keep their ages at least roughly synchronised with their friends, to stop awkward questions about why they seem to be aging too quickly. This lasts for at least ten years - Amy is 21 when she first starts travelling with the Doctor, while Rory, who by all appearances was in the same class as Amy, and thus is the same age, states that he's 31 in "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship", which takes place some considerable time before their eventual departure from the series (the episode "The Power of Three" alone covers an entire year). By the end of their travels with the Doctor, Rory and Amy are probably about 33 years old. Given that they first started travelling with him in 2010, they would have lived through until around 2021 or 2022, making their appearance on the hillside in 2020, when The Hungry Earth was set, very easy.

Doctor Who (2005)

Chosen answer: It's not so much that they're necessarily competing (indeed, the Doctor would be appalled to think that they were), it's really just that Amy has, at this point in the series, rather conflicted feelings about the Doctor and Rory. While on the verge of marrying the dependable everyman Rory, she feels an attraction to the Doctor, his exciting life and offbeat ways. As a result of this episode, she comes to realise that she does truly love Rory.

Doctor Who (2005)

Chosen answer: It is explained in the last episode of the series that the crack in Amy's wall is like a hole in time that's following her around, sucking in people and erasing their entire existence. When this happens, as it does with Rory mid season, Amy and everyone else who knew the person forgets all about them and their mind just sort of fills in the blanks in their past that that person would have filled. This is what happened to Amy's parents, they were erased from time before the Doctor met her, that's why he takes such an interest in her - she's the girl who doesn't make sense living all alone in such a big house. The events of the final episode set things right and restore her parents to existence along with everyone else the crack swallowed.

roboc

Does that mean the four clerics who were erased are also restored?

13th Dec 2012

Doctor Who (2005)

Chosen answer: Angels Take Manhattan takes place in Amy and Rory's personal timelines after they experience the events of The Doctor's visits. Show generally

Question: 1. How did Sarah-Jane Smith get introduced to the Doctor? 2.Does she have a 'title'? (eg. Amelia is the girl that waited) 3. How did she get written out?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: 1) She broke into a UNIT base during the story "The Time Warrior", masquerading as her aunt, a respected scientist, and met the Doctor there when she investigated the strange blue box that she found there. 2) No, she doesn't. 3) She left the series at the end of The Hand of Fear, after the Doctor was summoned home to Gallifrey and decided that it would be too dangerous to take her there with him. He dropped her off, ostensibly near her home in South London, but actually in Aberdeen, due to the navigational eccentricities of the TARDIS.

Doctor Who (2005)

Chosen answer: The show, at the time, was suffering badly in the ratings, mainly from a poor time slot, which put it directly up against a highly popular soap opera. The series was also going through something of a bad patch anyway - Colin Baker had proved controversial as the sixth Doctor, leading to his eventual dismissal from the role, a prior eighteen month hiatus had lowered public interest, and a number of issues behind the scenes were deemed to have had a detrimental effect on script quality. While things arguably improved somewhat in the final couple of series with Sylvester McCoy's seventh Doctor, the damage was done and, although pre-production work had already started on the next series, the decision was taken to suspend production.

Shadow5

Question: Was it just me or did the Earth not stand still in this film at all? And also can you explain the film's events to me.

Shadow5

Chosen answer: No, it sure didn't. It's just a figure of speech referring to everyone's attention being focused on the alien sphere. In the opening of the film, a man's genetic material is harvested in order to grow a body for a member of an alien race to inhabit. Many years later, this alien individual comes to Earth to warn the population that their violent nature has marked them for termination now that they have developed space travel and their violence poses a threat to the rest of the universe. They must stop immediately to avoid this fate. The alien ambassador is attacked before he can deliver this message, rather proving the point he came to make. Chandler has kissed Monica (of course), Rachel (while covering for his relationship with Monica), Phoebe (while covering for his relationship and also when on a fake date before revealing said relationship), Joey (New Year's Eve in season 1 when Chandler is complaining about not having anyone to kiss), and Ross (implied during Rachel's birthday party where he was very drunk). Doctor Who (2005)

Show generally

Question: This is actually for Doctor 1 but I couldn't find it anywhere. I heard it somewhere that they were going to do only 10 series, but when Doctor 1 fell ill they put in the idea he can regenerate. Is this true? Also is this why a lot of the later episodes were destroyed?

Shadow5

Chosen answer: The show was intended to be ongoing, with no particular plan as to how many series might be involved. But you are indeed correct that William Hartnell's failing health was the principal factor that led to the concept of the regeneration being introduced, with Hartnell himself suggesting Patrick Troughton as his successor, a suggestion that was taken up. This is not, however, why many episodes from that era are missing. At the time, it simply wasn't standard policy to keep episodes indefinitely after transmission, due to the limitations in storage space, and thus many early episodes were simply wiped.

Chosen answer: A lot of these scenes are shot over the shoulder of one or the other character, if you watch closely, the one whose back is to the camera is often a double. For the most part, they'd film one character's part, reset and have Lisa Kudrow change clothes, then film the other one's part. It's the same technique used in "The Parent Trap" (Lindsay Lohan) and a couple of Eddie Murphy movies ("The Nutty Professor" and "Norbit", that I know of).

Question: When the friends gang can't get in or out of Monica's apartment because they have locked the keys in or out why couldn't the other gang members let them borrow theirs? In the last ever episode it shows them having a key each.

Shadow5

It could be that after they got locked out, the girls decided everyone should have a key to their apartment to avoid another similar dilemma.

Question: What was behind those rocks Truman was climbing up when he was about 4 and his dad tells him to come down, it's not safe?

Shadow5

Friends (1994)

Chosen answer: Gunther is rather particular about his appearance, keeping his hair carefully cut and colored, and is always wearing well chosen shirts and ties. This is what is commonly referred today as being "metro-sexual" which a lot of people consider to be gay. Gay men (stereotypically) are particular about how they look, so she just assumes. Also, since he is SO in love with Rachel, he doesn't have other relationships to prove her opinion incorrect because he is always hoping she will be single soon and notice him. Who can say why he is so in love with Rachel. Why does ANYONE love someone else? Infatuation? Her looks? Her personality? We will never know. Love is funny that way.
