New forum

Site discussion
Well...this is new. To be honest it's a bit of an experiment! It's fairly basic at the moment, but should at least work (I hope). And even in the course of writing this post I've realised something basic I forgot to include, and have fixed. :-)

New lines! That was it. Ahem. I'm hoping this will become a friendly place to chat about movies, TV shows, and random stuff to boot. This category is where you can post ideas for new features (for the forum or site as a whole). Stay civil, because moderating forums can be a challenge at the best of times - while it's currently open to all, I suspect enough people will try and ruin it for everyone (because that's the internet for you) that it will have to become a bit more locked down. Let's see how this goes...Jon Sandys Premium member

I still think a stats page would be a good idea. Shows attention to detail

Fair point! Actually a whole page would be easier than a section - real estate is increasingly limited, and it's tricky to balance "stuff I want to feature" vs "where to actually put it." :-) I'll add it to the to-do list (I think I've got the old code around somewhere), but that list is getting increasingly long!

For example, "notifications for replies to forum posts" and "ability to edit your own forum posts" are both relatively high on it...

Did reply earlier, but replying directly again to (hopefully) demonstrate the forum notification system, which is now working, and didn't exist earlier. :-) Registered members with confirmed email addresses will be notified when their comments are replied to.

Why not just open up the original forum without the paying?

A tip i'd like to give is make accessing this froum easier, easier to find on the website. Usually i click on a movie and then the discussion for that movie to get to this froum because i have no idea how to get ot it otherwise.

In large part because maintaining the old forum was a nightmare! The software was outdated and keeping it tied into the main site was a major pain. Definitely hear you re finding this more easily - there's links on the homepage and in the menu, but where would you tend to look? Happy to make it more accessible...

Perhaps you could ask for donations and get some new software to update the forum to something more accessible and comprehensible. This is hard to work with.

As I said, where else would you have links, what would you change? The joy of it being self-developed is that I can tweak/improve it endlessly, rather than having to wrestle with some arbitrary system.

I'd put a link at the top for starters. I don't know how the layout of the board works but maybe add a view borders, additional info on the specific forum, more last post info ready to see. Categorise it and more attention to the details.

There's a link in the sidebar, but there's just no room at the top - it's a constant juggle trying to prioritise the links most people want! I get the point about the other bits though, although I'm not sure what you mean by "view borders"?

Lol, silly me, i meant to say "add a few borders", to seperate the threads and forums i mean. I get the juggling though, but i am confident the forum would become an important part of the site if it becomes common knowledge and well laid out. Discussion of mistakes it about as important as finding and correcting them. Helps communication between the contributors, which is important if you want to attract new people.

Aah yes, makes more sense! :-) Re communication that's something I'm in the middle of and nearly done - a notifications system which tracks replies, answers, etc. so if someone replies to a comment you make that gets flagged up to you when you log in (probably via email too). At the moment people have no idea unless they scan through everything they've ever submitted on a regular basis!

Ah yes, thats an excellent idea! I'll be looking forward to that.

Notifications are now live! All being well in addition to an email about this post (notifications don't get emailed just yet, that's next to do) you'll get a red blob on the menu icon with a link...

An example is total mistakes, total trivia, total screenshots, total titles listed, then break some bits down such as total continuity mistakes total audio mistakes total visible crew ect

Then have things like tot number of corrections, total number of members, visitors this month ect. Then add top members to that page too

Do timecodes go through a checking process same as mistakes? only i've added a fair few lately that dont seem to be actually appearing on the main site.

Yup - I've just approved a few. Got a baby to wrangle so I have a bit less time at the moment to work on the site, but catching up when I can!

Yeah here is a thing, when you look at the forums they say "Last comment 5 hours ago" but then when i go into that forum i can't find a single thread that has a comment from 5 hours ago. whats up with that?

Ah, I know what the issue is most likely, and will try to fix it soon. I suspect when someone makes a comment the time is updated, but if it's a forum post that should be a mistake or similar it gets moved / deleted, but the time isn't updated.
