Mission: Impossible 2
Mission: Impossible 2 mistake picture

Continuity mistake: The tyres on the crotch rocket motorcycles they were riding kept changing from knobbly tyres to road slicks, back and forth depending on what terrain they were on. Easiest to see when Ethan skids on the road to avoid the white van - clear shot of slick tyres - then about 30 seconds later they're on the dirt, he skids into the old car and you can easily see that he's got off-road tyres front and back.

Mission: Impossible 2 mistake picture

Continuity mistake: In the car chase scene with Nyah after they split and hit again and are spinning look at Ethan's car. The driver's side in the close ups was on the American side, then in the spin it is reversed to an English side. (It is a negative image - the license plate is reversed). The next image is back to normal.

Factual error: In the scene at the race track where they show the virus infecting and destroying cells in the blood stream, they clearly show that it is red blood cells being infected. Viruses, in order to replicate, require the cell's DNA replication machinery. However, mature red blood cells in the circulation no longer possess this machinery since they no longer have a nucleus or DNA. It would therefore be impossible for this virus to replicate.

Mission: Impossible 2 mistake picture

Continuity mistake: The registration plate on Ethan Hunt's bike changes between 'NI 89' and 'ND 69' on occasion. Clearest moments are NI 89 just as he goes into the flames on the burning bridge, and ND 69 when he's through them. (01:38:35)

Factual error: The action takes place in Seville, and the burning of wooden figures is shown as a traditional feast. The feast involving the burning of wooden figures takes place in Alicante and Valencia, 350 miles way from Seville.

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Hunt is chasing Nyah in the car, there is a part where he almost hits a gray car. When the camera shot comes from behind, we see a gravel road on the side with pine trees, but when it cuts immediately to an air shot, we see a concrete bridge-like road with no gravel for several feet ahead or behind. It does this throughout the scene.

Mission: Impossible 2 mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Tom Cruise is chasing Thandie Newton in his car in an early scene. He tries to fasten his seatbelt, and finally manages it. But later, sometimes he has his seatbelt on, and sometimes he doesn't.

Visible crew/equipment: Near the end of the movie, when the point of the knife is close to Tom Cruise's eye, you can see the cameraman and the reflector on the reflection of the eye.

Continuity mistake: During the fight between Ethan and Sean, Sean cuts Ethan's face with a knife and it's bleeding. A little bit later it is not bloody and it looks as if the wound is closed, then open and bloody again.

Visible crew/equipment: When the cars flip over as they blow up, you will see a circular object underneath the vehicles, about the size of a tyre (very obvious in slow motion). This is the device that "lifts" the vehicle for it to flip on one side, timed with the appropriate explosion.

Revealing mistake: During the scene on the beach just after the collision of the two bikes we see Scott and Cruise flying together in a big hug, but if you see the short shot when the black bike starts to explode frame by frame you will actually see a lonely man with his arms wide open.

Visible crew/equipment: As Tom Cruise is listening to his mission via the sunglasses at the beginning of the film, the camera and several crew members are reflected in the right lens as the shot pans around him.

Continuity mistake: Why did Hunt's team decide to use an outback location as their Sydney base? It looks like it's in the middle of the Nullabor, which ain't exactly a helicopter ride from Sydney. Come to think of it, there isn't much terrain like that anywhere within a several hundred kilometres of Sydney.

Factual error: In the scene where Ethan is in the helicopter about to rappel into the BioCyte building, you see his hair blowing upward. In reality, the prop wash from the helicopter would make his hair blow into his face.

Mission: Impossible 2 mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Ethan finishes showing Nyah the pictures of the aeroplane crash so she can see what kind of man Ambrose is, she puts out a candle with her hand. Then when they show her from the front, it's lit again, from the side it's out, then lit from the front, AGAIN!

Mission: Impossible 2 mistake picture

Revealing mistake: When Ethan's pal is in the helicopter and Ethan is escaping on the motorbike he fires a grenade launcher at the car - he misses the first time, gets the car the second time, but you can clearly see the bridge is made of wood - where the car gets blown up there's a big concrete/steel plate to support the bridge. (01:38:30)

Visible crew/equipment: In the scene where Nyah and Ethan have a race with a Porsche and an Audi-TT, at the end after the camera shows Nyah's feet you see both cars from front. Now on the right side of the screen you see the shadow of the filming helicopter.

Continuity mistake: When Nyah and Ethan are in bed in Spain, the lights reflected off Ethan's face and of the bed covers change between shots.

Mission: Impossible 2 mistake picture

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Nyah is walking up towards Ambrose's house, the wind is playing havoc with Nyah's hair and scarf. Throughout the scene, there are several shots of her where there is no wind, her hair is not moving and the scarf is perfectly placed (most noticeably when she steps off the boat onto the walkway).

Continuity mistake: In the rock climbing scene, just after Hunt does his flying jump, he falls, slides down a smooth rock face and grabs a hold at the last minute to stop him plummeting to his death. When he pulls back up, and over he grabs a hand hold on the smooth surface which wasn't there before. If you know what you are looking for, you will also see that it is a bolt on hold which has been attached to the rock face.

Mission: Impossible 2 mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Near the end of the final fight scene, Tom Cruise has some blood coming out of his nose... That blood disappears and returns several times during that scene, and it's visible with all those close ups of him.

Continuity mistake: At the beginning when Ethan is getting briefed of his mission with the sunglasses, his point of view shot through the glasses shows the landscape moving across from right to left, yet on the shots looking at him he isn't turning around or moving his head at all.

Continuity mistake: When Tom Cruise is in the final fight scene with Dougray Scott, he performs a 'spinning jump kick'. When he lands, he is shown landing with his right foot in one shot, his left foot in the next one, and back to his right foot in the final shot.

Plot hole: In the first night that Nyah is in Ambrose's house she meets with Ethan outside the house and they talk for about 1 1/2 min. Then we find out "Ethan" was really Ambrose with one of those "high-tech" masks. My question...After being in bed with both, how come Nyah didn't recognise Ambrose is about 5 inches taller than Ethan?

Plot hole: The virus ravaged Nyah is making her way to a cliff to kill herself when Ethan sends his buddies to save her. There is no way that the flight to her location would have taken that long unless John Polson decided to take Ving Rhames for a guided tour of the Sydney skyline first just in case he missed any of it. It's just a couple of minutes flight time for a helicopter at full throttle.

Continuity mistake: The 747 that crashes in the beginning of the movie has a fictitious airline name painted on the fuselage; but the dialogue uses a different name.

Plot hole: While Tom Cruise is entering the inoculation chamber at BioCyte lab, he is shown entering through a airlock. While he does this, both doors can be seen open. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of having an airlock?

Factual error: When Luther is in the helicopter in the final scene on his way to Nyah he says 'distance 2K' when he is over central Sydney. Nyah is at the coast, which is approximately 15 km from Sydney center.

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: At the racetrack when the girl has the binoculars up and talking to Tom Cruise her hair is behind her ear, then down, then behind her ear again.

Factual error: The car chase between Ethan and Nyah is supposed to take place in Spain involving Spanish cars (plate's colour and the way numbers and letters are represented follows the Spanish code), but a real Spanish plate should have numbers and letters displayed as follows '1234 ABC' or 'AB- 1234-AB'.

Continuity mistake: When Ethan makes the spectacular leap during the rock climbing scene, you see him land vertically, as in he landed in a standing position, clinging to a rock safely, yet when it immediately cuts to another angle, he is already sliding down to the edge.

Continuity mistake: When Nyah and Ethan are in the tub at the mansion, one shot shows Nyah with the heels of her feet up, then it switches to where they're facing the bottom of the tub.

Visible crew/equipment: At one point in the scene where Tom Cruise is escaping with the antivirus, but before he gets on the motorcycle, he jumps and sort of flips and manages to shoot someone while upside down. When he lands, the ground ripples like a waterbed, revealing that it was some sort of pad to cushion his fall.

Visible crew/equipment: During the bike chase at the end of the film, a stunt man in full leathers and crash helmet can be seen on one of the bikes - none of the riders were wearing anything like that.

Continuity mistake: In the first scene Ethan is climbing - he makes a strange jump and he manages to move from one rock to another, but after that tremendous front-hit his t-shirt is perfectly clean...what soap does he use?

Audio problem: When Luther walks from the helicopter he steps in some sheep droppings. His last step (but not the second to last.) makes a slushy sound. But sheep droppings are too dry to make such a sound.

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: In the shots after Tom Cruise made the white smoke-like stuff, it shows the accident in the background shot of Tom, but the next time, it's miraculously cleaned up.

Continuity mistake: When Nyah is getting out of the "PALACIO DE JUSTICIA" building in Sevilla Spain, she is using a leather bag in her right arm, then we see a close up of Tom Cruise wearing sunglasses and watching her. The reflection of Nyah on the sunglasses is wrong, it should be backwards (the bag has to be in the left arm in the reflection).

Continuity mistake: Ethan shoots the glass on the front of the black bike during the chase near the end, but when the bike lands after jumping off the rock over Ethan, the glass is back in perfect condition.

Continuity mistake: After the car chase, when Nyah sits in Etahn's lap, the sun is on the left side of her face (and from the back right on Ethan). In the next clip Nyah's face is in shadow and the sun is from the front left on Ethan's face.

Continuity mistake: In the first car chase, in the clip right after Nyah says '. you gotta catch me', you see the double yellow lines on the road. But in previous clips, and on the clip right after, the lines on the road are white. The clip with yellow lines are from another stretch of road.

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: In the final fight scene between Hunt and Ambrose, Ambrose cuts Hunt's face and back with his knife. But in the scene when the knife is close to his eye, you get a close up of it and there is no blood on the knife blade. It is perfectly clean.

Factual error: The aeroplane at the beginning of the film is a 747-400. You can tell because the wings had winglets when they showed the exterior view. Well, a 747-400 only has a two man cockpit, there is no "sideways flying" flight engineer like in the movie.

Continuity mistake: When Tom and Thandie are lying in bed after the chase, at the end of the scene, he leans in to kiss her. Thandie brushes back a very clear lock of hair that has come out of nowhere.

Continuity mistake: The agreed ransom at the start of the film is £37 million. Later this turns into 30 million pounds (though I may have got the share options bit a bit confused here). Then when the transfer is actually made, it has reduced to 30 million dollars.

Continuity mistake: In the rock climbing scene at the very beginning of the film, you can see the magnesium dirt left on the rocks from the earlier takes.

Continuity mistake: When Nyah is informed that the disc is in an envelope in Sean's pocket, she takes it out and puts it under her arm with part of it sticking out on the back side of her arm. The scene changes to a half body shot of Nyah and you can tell there is no envelope under her arm and as she turned to walk away Sean would have seen the envelope sticking out from under her arm.

Continuity mistake: As Tom Cruise is climbing up to the biotech island facility, the helicopter is sat waiting on a ledge. As the camera helicopter flies around the stationary chopper, its downwash causes one of the rotor blades to bounce downwards momentarily.

Revealing mistake: When Ethan's pal is in the helicopter and Ethan is escaping on the motorbike, he fires a grenade launcher at a gold ford Taurus driving across a bridge. When the grenade hits the car and the car explodes it flies into the air and off the side of the bridge. You can see as the car is falling from the bridge there's no engine or transmission in the car. It is only a shell.

Continuity mistake: At the end when the helicopter swings in front of the woman on the cliff, the damage to the left side of the helicopter is missing - bullet holes, broken glass etc.

Factual error: Near the end, Ethan Hunt and Sean Ambrose engage in a high-speed motorcycle chase that culminates with them crashing their motorcycles head-on. Just before the crash, both men leap off their bikes and their bodies collide in mid-air above the crash. However, if Hunt and Ambrose were racing towards each other at 40 mph (a conservative estimate), then the combined force of their bodies colliding would be equivalent to an 80 mph impact, which would pulverize their skeletons and kill both men instantly.

Charles Austin Miller

Revealing mistake: When we see Ethan Hunt jump from the helicopter, you can see that it is not Tom Cruise but his stunt double.

Factual error: The portrait of Semana Santa (Eastern) celebrations in Sevilla are absurd. Weird wooden constructions on fire (I guess it refers to Fallas, a celebration from Valencia and Alicante, around 400 miles away, in a tradition in which people burn cheap satirical and arty polystyrene sculptures with the arrival of Spring). Repetitive satanic hymns, fantasy castles, ritual drums, fireplaces and candles everywhere, effigies on sticks on flames, traditional clothes from somewhere in Central America mixed with San Fermín outfits and flutes (from Pamplona, over 600 miles away), frantic dances and women throwing flower petals over the crowd. I only miss some bulls dancing around in flamenco clothes while drinking sangría. The equivalent would be to portray a US festival in which Mickey Mouse rides a horse wearing a scary pumpkin mask while being carried by a leprechaun watching fireworks.

Mission: Impossible 2 mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Near the start of the car chase at the end, a white car loses a hub cap in extreme close-up, but when it wipes out completely and flips over a few seconds later all its hub caps are still on.

Continuity mistake: During the end bike chase scene, Ethan Hunt has just used his mirror to fire his Beretta at Sean Ambrose, he then re-holsters the weapon and swerves round two cars. If you play the movie slowly you can see that after he re-holsters the gun it is still in his left hand while he is holding onto the handlebars. It's a quick shot so you have to look carefully.

Continuity mistake: When Sean removes his Ethan mask on the 747 his eyes change from Ethan's clear blue to his own dark. But there is no eye cover or contact lenses incorporated in the mask. (00:04:40)

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: At the rock climbing sequence, after he slips and is hanging by one hand starts staring at the landscape, in the wide shots, the sun is directly behind him, but in the closeup shots, he is in the shadow. (00:07:45)

Factual error: During the motorcycle chase gasoline spills from the bullet hole on the motorcycle. Every mechanic knows that gas doesn't have drops like those, it spreads out in a thin film. Also the wind would blow it away.

Continuity mistake: During the motorcycle scene near the end of the movie there is a shot of Cruise from the front. You can clearly see an earring on his left ear. A second later it's gone.
