Factual error: There's a radio broadcast in 'Men of Honour,' which has Milwaukee playing Brooklyn before Braves actually moved to Wisconsin from Boston in 1953.
Factual error: When they are entering the base in Bayonne, NJ you see mountains in the background. There are no mountains in Bayonne, and across from Bayonne is Staten Island, NY where there definitely aren't mountains.
Factual error: As it says at the very end of the movie, the year is 1969. In the near ending when Carl is in his room getting ready to go to the court hearing, which re-inlists him into the navy, if you look out his bedroom window there's a flag with 48 stars. In 1969 the flag was already 50 stars.
Continuity mistake: When the Master Diver is preparing to go under water to take the final exam, he is shown being fitted with a brass helmet with a window on top. In the next shot as he is descending the ladder into the water, there is no window.
Continuity mistake: When Carl is diving to retrieve the lost nuclear bomb, the Soviet submarine crashes into his air hose assembly and it gets caught in the bow dive planes of the submarine, which is accurate, since all Soviet submarines, including those of the era in which the movie is set, are designed with bow planes. Once the cables work themselves free, we see the submarine sailing away, its dive planes are mounted on the conning tower, which is where U.S. submarines during the 60s-90s had their dive planes mounted. No submarine is equipped with both bow and conning tower dive planes, so the conclusion is that the movie-makers used a model of a Soviet sub for the "tangling" and "dragging" shots, and a model of a U.S. sub for the "sailing away" shot.
Factual error: When Billy Sunday goes into Pappy's cabin, Pappy is shining some medals. As Pappy is giving his speech about things not mixing, one of the medals displayed is a Meritorious Service Medal. This medal was not introduced until 1969, long after this scene was supposed to have taken place.
Continuity mistake: When Sunday pulls up in a car to speak with Brashear, there is a prominent red streak on the door in the back seat. In the next shot, it's completely gone.
Factual error: When the black scuba is out for his first (or second) weekend off school, he is at the port watching a ship passing. The prow of that vessel is "bulbous bow" type, (a kind of "appendix" in the prow that increases the speed). The "bulbous bow" concept for merchant marine vessels didn't start up until around 1964.
Continuity mistake: When Carl Brashear in the courtroom is walking with the 130kg heavy diving suit, he is taking the last step against Leslie Sunday. When he has taken the step he moves his left foot one more time as easily as if it was a pair of Nike Air shoes he was wearing, but earlier he almost couldn't take his 9 step.
Revealing mistake: After Brashear surfaces with the re-captured nuke and it is being hoisted aboard, the mast line snaps and slices Brashear's leg. At the very moment the piece of metal cuts him, you can see the pant-leg switch from tan to white and back to tan.
Continuity mistake: When Sunday wakes up Brashear and blasts him with a hose, his shirt is rolled up to his armpits. Then when Sunday picks him up it's rolled down.
Factual error: During the bar scene in which they wear the mark 5 helmets. The character holding the stopwatch is wearing 2 National Defense Service Ribbons. If he was issued a second award he would wear a bronze star. not an additional ribbon.
Other mistake: In the courtroom scene, when Chief Sunday tells Brashear to stand up, the tenders go to help him up without question, and when Captain Hanks overrides him, saying that he has to stand up himself, even they look confused and surprised. They wouldn't be just some random enlisted sailors doing this, they have been trained in being a tender, and would reasonably know what the policies are. (01:56:50)
