Twilight

Question: How does James know that Edward is a mind reader?

Question: When Edward and Bella were by the lockers at school, how come Edward couldn't read Bella?

Chosen answer: Edward is able to read anyone's mind "except" for Bella, something he cannot understand why and that frustrates him. Bella has some unknown ability to block any mental intrusion.

Question: Near the end of the movie, at the prom, when Bella and Edward first walk in, Bella spots Jessica and signals something to her with her hand going across her chest. What was Bella signalling to Jessica?

Molly

Chosen answer: Earlier, when the girls were shopping for prom dresses in Port Angeles, Jessica commented that the low-cut dress she was trying on made her boobs "look good." She is wearing that same dress at the prom, and Bella is gesturing and then giving a "thumbs up" that Jessica's cleavage does look good. Jessica mouths back, "I know."

Question: I wanted to ask that, when James had bitten Bella, then the venom/poison was left in Bella's arm and Edward had to suck it out later, but why didn't Edward leave the venom in Bella's arm? They both (James and Edward) sucked Bella's blood and James left venom, but Edward did not. How is that possible?

Chosen answer: Edward wants Bella to remain human and experience life from the human point of view. As for them sucking her blood... James actually bit Bella, thus causing venom to enter to blood stream. Edward did not bite Bella; he simply sucked on the open wound to remove the venom from Bella's system.

Question: When they are in the garage, before they split up to throw off James, Edward tells Alice to "Please keep your thoughts to yourself". I've read the book and I'm pretty sure it explains this but I can't remember. What is Alice thinking?

Chosen answer: Alice can see the future (She can not read minds, thoughts and intentions). She has foreseen that Bella will become a vampire and Edward does not want her to tell Bella that.

Jazaray

Answer: If Alice tells Bella that she will be a vampire she will be scared and shocked.

Question: When the Cullen family are cooking for Bella, during Rosalie's speech, we can see Esme looking at Bella and Edward, with an increasing smile on her face. Why is she smiling this way?

sebastianik

Chosen answer: There's no one particular reason. The family knows that Rosalie doesn't approve of Bella and that she's overreacting here. The Cullens, particularly Esme, the family matriarch, like Bella and are happy that Edward has found someone; they are just ignoring Rosalie's outburst.

Question: When Bella was in her room talking with Edward saying like he wanted to try something, when the kissing got intense someone yelled "stop." Was it Edward or Bella?

PrettyOpal

Chosen answer: It was Edward. He was commanding himself to stop, knowing that his becoming physically intimate with Bella could kill her, due to his immense strength, or he might not be able to stop himself biting her.

raywest Premium member

Question: When Edward is showing Bella his room you can see something like newspaper articles on his window. What is that?

Chosen answer: Articles about the rogue vampire attacks, which the Cullens are following very closely, in the event they have to relocate.

Brenda Elzin

Question: Why is it that James, Laurent & Victoria cannot "hear" Bella's heartbeat as they are standing in the field? In all of the books it is made quite clear that the vampires hear Bella's heartbeat whenever she's in close proximity to them. Any ideas?

Chosen answer: Simply put, because it better serves the story. There's no reason they shouldn't be able to hear it. One could argue that the thunderstorm masks it, I suppose, but vampire hearing is implied to be more precise than that or else the babble of noises would constantly drown out fainter sounds like heartbeats. Not to mention hearts beat continuously while the thunder does not rumble constantly. Oversights like this are just to make the story more interesting and to move the plot along.

Phixius Premium member

Question: What does Edward mean when he is in Bella's room and says that he's 'always wanted to try one thing' (or something like that)? It looks to me like he just kisses her, which he's done before.

Chosen answer: Edward has never kissed Bella until that major bedroom scene in the movie. When he says he always wanted to try one thing, he means kissing her for the first time.

Question: In a flashback scene, we see Carlisle about to transform the then-dying Edward to a vampire. Shortly before Carlisle bites, he whispers something to Edward's ear. What could he have told him?

Allister Cooper, 2011

Chosen answer: He says "I'm sorry" - found out by looking at backstage videos and things like that.

Answer: Carlisle says "I'm sorry"to Edward because Carlisle knows how painful is to be a vampire and how hard it is to control the thirst of blood.

Question: At the end of the movie, why doesn't Carlisle drain Bella's body of the venom seeing as human blood doesn't affect him anymore in the way that it does other vampires?

Chosen answer: Because he is controlling the bleeding and doing other medical treatments. Also it is Edward's choice, he won't make that decision for him.

Question: In the movie Edward, Emmett and Jasper are wearing matching wristbands with a symbol and Rosalie and Alice are wearing the same symbol on necklaces, what is the significance of these items?

Chosen answer: The amulets that are attached to the wrist bands and the necklaces are of the Cullen family crest. http://www.twilightcullencrestjewelry.com/.

Boobra

Question: When Edward was talking to Bella, why did his eyes change colors?

Chosen answer: Vampires' eyes change color according to their state of hunger. When hungry, their eyes are black. When sated their irises turn red, or in the Cullens' case, they become golden brown because they only drink animal blood. Bella notices that Edward's eyes have changed since she first saw him. Being physically close to Bella, whose blood scent is irresistible to Edward, may have whetted his appetite, causing a color change.

Question: In the beginning of the movie, when the Cullens walk into the school it's sunny outside, yet they don't sparkle why is that?

bk123456

Chosen answer: In order to sparkle, the vampires need to be in direct sunlight.

Question: I have seen the film Twilight four times now and I still don't understand why Edward don't just turn Bella, it is obvious that they are both in love with each other (which I don't blame her) but he is still reluctant, I was just wondering why this was, because if Edward truly loved Bella he would turn her and they could truly like a very happy eternal life together.

Chosen answer: Because Edward (and the other Cullens) are deeply moral and caring. They would never have chosen to become vampires and know the hardships that life incurs. Edward wants Bella to live her life and fully experience being human. He fears she will be cursed and lose her soul if she is turned. You do not wish that on someone you love.

raywest Premium member

Answer: Edward can't read Bella's mind because she has a "mind shield." It blocks out any mental or psychic power. In the last Twilight movie, Volturi can use use their minds to bring pain to others. Bella can use that shield to block it. She learns how to protect others and herself.

Question: Why is it when Bella sees Waylon's body does she have a flashback to Edward? What is the relationship here?

xoalisaxo17

Chosen answer: When Bella sees Waylon's dead, pale white foot sticking out from under the sheet, she has a flashback to Edward's cold, pale white hand touching her in the car. Seeing the skin color of a dead body automatically made her think of Edward's skin, and how cold it was. She finally realises then that Edward is not a 'living being'.

Question: At the end of the movie, when Bella and Edward walk into the prom building, the camera shows a shot of Victoria. She has her back turned, but the camera is on her long enough that there is no doubt it's her. Edward would know she is there because he can smell other vampires. Did they do that on purpose or is it a mistake? I can't find any online information about it.

Answer: The viewer is most certainly meant to see that it is Victoria. What the viewer is not meant to do is question her presence. In all honesty it was most likely a movie error by the writer. Although it is possible that Victoria knew this and somehow hid her smell because her ability pertains to hiding.

Chosen answer: There's never any answer given about this, but Victoria, knowing that Edward can smell other vampires, could have taken measures to mask her scent or always positioned herself so he was unable to detect it. Also, if any of Edward's "siblings" also attended the prom, then their scent would be intermingled with Victoria's, helping to make hers undetectable. It is never stated that a vampire has an individual odor that can precisely identify who it is.

Question: When Bella is bitten by James, Jasper also comes and rescues her - by killing James - but how is it that Jasper does not react to Bella's blood? Is it because of "heat of battle?" I also think of New Moon, where she only had a paper cut (but he still freaked out).

IdaMarieSmithLarsen

Chosen answer: There's no definitive answer. Most likely it was because the conditions between the two scenarios were very different. When the Cullens saved Bella, Jasper was intensely focused on defeating James, exerting all his energy into killing him. He would have gone into battle knowing there could be bloodshed. He may also have not been "hungry" at the time, therefore, less affected by the scent of blood. At the birthday party, Bella cutting her finger was so totally unexpected that it caught Jasper by surprise, and he instinctively reacted to it. He still struggles with being a "vegetarian," and is constantly watched by the other Cullens.

Question: Why doesn't anybody notice how hard and cold the skin of Carlisle is? He is a doctor after all, who touches his patients.

tmrr30

Chosen answer: He's a surgeon. His patients are usually unconscious when he's actually touching them. Not always, of course, but it's just his hands he's touching them with and he'd be sure to be very gentle so they wouldn't notice how hard they are. A doctor with cold hands is kind of a running joke, really.

Question: When Edward, Rosalie and Carlisle are running in the forest to spread Bella's scent, when James decides to change course, how does Edward know? He says he can read the mind only at a certain distance, and Alice is in Phoenix. How then was Edward able to know the tracker's change of mind? It seemed as if he had been able to read his mind.

Chosen answer: Exactly. He read James' mind. James is considerably closer than Alice, so it would make no sense to keep tabs on him through Alice. Surely Edward would explicitly stay close enough to James to know how effective their efforts are being.

Question: Why does Edward bite Victoria, when he ends her? He obviously doesn't like it, couldn't he just rip her head off?

Answer: Probably because he was in a rage fighting for his life and protecting Bella.

raywest Premium member

Question: Okay, so this is sort of a book question, but I guess you could apply it to the movie. What do the covers of the books have to do with the stories within the books? Is there any real importance to them? And, why wasn't the book cover used for the cover of the DVD?

padfootrocksmysocks

Chosen answer: The publishers had the ultimate control over the books’ cover designs, but according to Stephanie Meyer, the author, the apple on the first book represents the "forbidden fruit" which Bella and Edward's love would certainly be. Meyer is unsure just what the ruffled tulip on Book Two represents (it was the publisher's choice), but it could be about Bella's blossoming from a girl into woman. The red on white color may symbolize the blood vampires need to survive and how that is tied to Bella. The broken ribbon on Book Three represents the choices Bella must make between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob, and her continued ties to both world (mortal and immortal). Book Four's cover is a metaphor for Bella's progression throughout the entire saga. She began as the weakest (at least physically, when compared to vampires and werewolves) player on the board: the pawn. She eventually becomes the strongest: the queen. In the end, it's Bella who leads the Cullens to victory.

Question: I never read the book, but have been bothered as to why no one pressed Bella for more answers after "Twilight" because it's obvious in following movies that the scar on her hand is a bite and not some 'fall through a glass window' which was used as an excuse for the rest of her injuries. Can anyone help me?

Chosen answer: There is no exact answer to this. It is one of many glossed over plot details that make no real sense. We are supposed to believe that everyone accepted that the scar was created by her supposedly falling down a flight of stairs and through a window.

Question: Why does Edward not sparkle when he is playing the piano? There is a lot of sunlight.

kweenlost

Chosen answer: Because he is indoors and the sunlight is not directly shining on him.

Question: Why aren't Rosalie and Jasper surnamed Cullen? I can't understand why they are Hale and not Cullen.

Chosen answer: Rosalie refuses to give up her human last name - per Stephenie Meyer. She holds on to as much of her past life as she can. Since she and Jasper look enough alike, they pose as brother and sister, therefore Jasper takes the name Hale. They do this to try to fit in with humans - making the story whatever humans will easily believe - the less they have to explain the better. They also take the name Hale to avoid there being confusion or at worst perception of incest with the couples having the same last names, it would raise even more questions about something that's already frowned upon.

Question: We know that Jasper and Rosalie pose as 18-year-old twins while in school at Forks, and presumably Edward poses as a 17-year-old...But what ages are Emmett and Alice meant to be while at school?

Chosen answer: Emmett and Alice are also supposed to be 17 or 18. It is not specified exactly, but in Breaking Dawn, all the Cullen siblings graduate the same year. In New Moon, Rosalie and Emmett graduate and "go off to college", while the others begin their senior years. As they are all supposed to be "adopted" by Carlisle and Esme Cullen, it is not unusual that they would all be the same ages.

Question: If/when Midnight Sun (which re-tells Twilight from Edward's POV) is ever optioned to make a film adaptation, would the scenes with Edward and Bella be edited into the film from this film? It would make more sense than having to re-shoot them. Plus, the dialogue pacing would be the same continuity-wise.

Cubs Fan Premium member

Chosen answer: Being that Stephanie Myers has stopped writing Midnight Sun because of it being leaked onto the internet, it may not ever be released or completed for that matter. It would make more sense for them to edit their scene into the film if it were to be made, but it would just be making the same film all over again. It would really be up to the director how to approach that, but as I said before, we may not ever see the completion of Midnight Sun.

Question: Why do Edward's eyes change color?

Chosen answer: When a vampire consumes human blood, their irises turn varying shades of red. The more blood consumed, and the more recent since it was drunk, the brighter the shade of red. When a vampire consumes animal blood, their irises turn to a topaz color which varies in shade similarly to the irises of a human-blood drinker. In either case, when a vampire goes for extended periods without feeding, their eyes turn darker and darker until they appear black.

Question: This question is more for those who have read the book, but I've always wondered that when Edward was taking a personal time from school since he first saw Bella in the classroom, what did he do all that time? Because first he wanted really bad to get out of that class and transferred to something else, but when he came back, he was friendly and had sort of accepted the situation. I always thought he might have been talking to Carlisle about his exceptional powers (or lack of them) regarding to Bella. Could anyone specify?

sadica

Chosen answer: He goes to visit the Denali clan in Alaska. He also hunts before he returns to school.

kristenlouise3

Question: I know different vampire movies have different rules, but one that is always true about vampire folklore is that sunlight kills them. How is it that sunlight doesn't kill them in this movie, yet only makes them sparkle?

Carl Missouri

Chosen answer: Actually, you're wrong about the whole sunlight thing. While it is commonly believed to be a fundamental constant in the vampire mythos, in Bram Stoker's original Dracula book, which can be seen as a primary progenitor for much of the modern vampire stories, the character of Dracula is not harmed by sunlight, although it reduces his powers. Likewise the character of Carmilla in the 1872 novella of the same name (which influenced Stoker's work), who can be seen as the prototypical female vampire, is merely weakened by sunlight. So there is considerable precedent for vampires who are able to move about freely in sunlight. Meyer decided to make them sparkle because the idea for Twilight came to her in a dream, I believe the concept of vampires sparkling was part of said dream.

Question: It is said that when a vampire drinks human blood, its eyes turn red. How come Edward's eyes did not turn red after drinking Bella's blood?

Chosen answer: Edward was sucking out the venom James injected into her, not feeding on her blood. He did not take in enough of it to have affected his eyes.

Question: Jacob imprinted on Renesmee which technically means they'll fall in love etc., but Renesmee is a vampire which means she's immortal, and Jacob is a shapeshifter so that means that he will age and at some point die, right? So if I am correct that means that Jacob will one day die and Renesmee will spend the rest of her life without her soulmate?

Answer: Not true. Renesmee is half-vampire. She is like the Tecuna half-breed that Alice and Jasper brought back from South America to prove to the Volturi that Renesmee was not an immortal child, who will never develop beyond childhood. She will grow to full-adulthood and be long-lived, but not immortal. She can eat human food or live on blood. She also needs to sleep like a human, which vampires do not do. As a shape-shifter, Jacob will also be long-lived, so in the future, both will die. Just when is unknown.

Question: How come in Twilight James' venom makes Bella scream and writhe in pain but in the last films she doesn't react to Edwards venom at all. I know they said in Breaking Dawn Part 2 it was because she has the shield ability, but wouldn't is also work the same with James' bite in the first film?

Shayleighxo

Answer: This is better explained in the books. Unlike the rest of the Cullens, Bella's transformation was planned in advance, so she was expecting the pain. When James bit her, she had no idea that the venom would burn like it did and that was her natural reaction. Also in the books, the morphine that Carlisle gave Bella during the transformation more or less made her unable to scream or even move. As the morphine wore off, she knew she would be able to move, but managed to stay completely still even though she was in intense pain. The reason she managed not to make a sound was out of love for Edward, because she was worried her screams would torment him and make him regret ever changing her.

Answer: A couple of reasons. When Edward first started biting Bella to inject his venom, she was all but clinically dead. Later, while she's transforming into a vampire, Carlisle tells Edward that she's not in any pain because he is treating her with morphine.

Question: After Edward saves Bella from a car crash, she sees him, Carlisle, and Rosalie talking in the hospital. What were they saying? I heard some of the words but not all.

aliadms

Chosen answer: Basically, Rosalie is complaining that Edward having saved Bella by stopping the truck with his hand has risked him exposing their family as vampires. Edward responds saying what else could he have done and should he have just have stood by and let Bella die. Rosalie thinks he should have if it protected the family. Carlisle then says they need to move the conversation to his office when he notices Bella watching them.

Question: If Alice can see the future and Edward can read/see thoughts, does that mean when Edward reads Alice's thoughts he can see the future too?

Chosen answer: That is basically true, but Edward knows that Alice's visions are subjective. If someone changes their mind or takes a new course of action, then the vision changes. If Edward is not around Alice when she sees a different vision, he would not know it has changed.

raywest Premium member

Question: These two questions apply to the entire Twilight saga. 1. Why do Rosalie and Emmet repeatedly marry each other? One time is enough. 2. Since the Cullens have been around for a very long time, why do Emmet, Rosalie, Jasper, Alice and Edward keep going to different schools and applying for colleges? Considering their immortality they're really just learning the same stuff they've learned years before, plus there's always the possibility of running into a human who chose to move to Forks from their past who might begin to question why they haven't aged.

Chosen answer: 1. They get married repeatedly for two reasons, one of which is the same reason they go through high school and college over and over again. The other reason is that they love each other very, very much, and are more than happy to speak their vows over and over. 2. They go through high school and college repeatedly because they look the age of people who'd be going to high school and then college; it's how they fit into society without raising any suspicion. They don't run into people from their pasts because they have several towns they cycle through, never moving back to the same place again until the people who lived there when the Cullen coven last called the place home have died of old age.

Question: Why didn't Edward want to kiss Bella?

Chosen answer: It's because vampires are physically so much stronger than humans that any touch or action can inflict severe injury or even death. This physical characteristic was somewhat toned down in the movies, but in the books, even a simple hug or kiss from Edward could have harmed Bella.

Question: Before going to play baseball, Edward says that there's a thunderstorm coming and that's the only time they can play, I heard Bella saying "I see why you need the thunder" but I don't quite understand why that is?

Chosen answer: The Cullens, as vampires, possess extraordinary physical power -- so when they play baseball, the sounds generated when striking the balls are extreme and need to be covered by the thunder (or blamed on thunder, should anyone hear them hitting the balls).

Question: James lures Bella to the ballet studio with the threat that her mother will be harmed. She hears her mother's scared voice and I'd assume that Bella would be able to tell if it was Victoria and not her mother on the phone. Yet when she wakes up to her mother at the hospital, it's like this never happened. Can anyone tell me what I missed here?

Chosen answer: The mother was never on the phone with Bella; it was a recording of an old message that James used to lure Bella to the dance studio Mimi's.

Tricia Webster Premium member

Answer: When James was in Bella's house in Arizona, he had found an old video recording that Bella's mother had made of a very young Bella at the ballet studio. While filming it, Rene' couldn't find Bella, and was frantically calling for her. That was the portion of the tape that James played when he was on the phone with Bella, fooling her that her mother was James' captive. Bella discovered the deception when she arrived at the ballet studio and discovered that her mother was never there or in any danger. When Bella awakens in the hospital, there was no need for any explanation of what happened because her mother believed that Bella had fallen down a hotel staircase.

raywest Premium member

Answer: I guess you missed the video recorder! When she thinks she's found her mom at the studio all she finds is a video recorder playing a video of when Bella was a child! He was never near her mother.

Answer: The mother was given a set of memories by the cullens, so that all this was explainable. The cullens could not let the mother know that vampire's existed. I assume that Bella was given similar memories so that she can keep up with the lie, Bella of course remember what had really happened.

Question: Bella, Edward and her friends were getting on the bus, and one of her friends went up to her and was going to ask her to prom. After she said that she wasn't going to be in town, she started walking to get to the bus, and she passed Edward and he started to smile. Why did he smile when she passed him?

Chosen answer: Because Edward has superhuman hearing, he could overhear Bella declining Mike's invitation. Edward is attracted to Bella, and he is pleased that she is uninterested in the other guy and probably also a bit amused over how she awkwardly handled the situation.

Question: I haven't read the books, but at times, Charlie Swan's behavior seems to indicate that he knows something about the Cullens. Other than thinking they are a bit odd, does he know that they are vampires or that the Quileutes are wolves?

raywest Premium member

Chosen answer: According to the 4 books, Charlie does NOT know the Cullens are vampires. Spoiler alert! In the 4th book breaking dawn, Jacob tells Charlie he is a werewolf. Charlie is not made aware of the Cullens as vampires in any of the 4 books.

Tricia Webster Premium member

Answer: Charlie does know that the Quileutes have a prejudice against the Cullen's and that they stopped using the hospital that Carlisle works in. When Bella tells her father that the Cullen kids aren't very accepted at school he is defensive and gives a long speech about what a good family they are.

Question: In the scene where James and Victoria find Waylon on his boat and proceed to have him for dinner, it looks like Waylon is wearing an Oregon Country Fair T-shirt. Can anyone verify this?

Chosen answer: No - he's wearing the green "Kiss me, I'm Irish" shirt that you see Victoria wearing later. You also see James later wearing Waylon's leather jacket. The director, Catherine Hardwicke, said she decided to make her hunter vampires steal clothes from their victims, as trophies.

Question: In what parts in the movie do each of the songs appear ?

Chosen answer: I'm assuming you mean the soundtrack rather than the score, though I have that too. This is in order of appearance rather than track listing. 1) Full Moon by The Black Ghosts - this plays after the scene with the deer, showing Bella's journey from Phoenix and arrival in Forks. 2) Eyes on Fire by Blue Foundation - when Bella wants to confront Edward before school3)Tremble for My Beloved by Collective Soul - starts playing when Edward has just saved Bella from the van.4)I Caught Myself by Paramore - playing in the background while Bella watches Jess and Angela try on dresses5)Never Think by Rob Pattinson - as Edward and Bella have dinner in the restaurant6) Bella's Lullaby by Carter Burwell - when Edward plays the piano for Bella7) Spotlight by Mute Math - the Ray-Ban scene when they arrive at school.8)Supermassive Black Hole by Muse - as they play baseball.9) Let Me Sign by Rob Pattinson - this isn't included on the CD but it plays as Edward sucks the venom out of Bella's wrist.10) Go All the Way by Perry Farrell - the song that plays as they enter the prom.11) Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron & Wine - as Bella and Edward slowdance outside and she asks to be made a vampire.12) 15 Step by Radiohead - not on CD, but the first credit song, played from when Victoria is shown to be watching. 13) Leave Out All the Rest by Linkin Park - second credit song. 14) Decode by Paramore- third credit song.

Question: If for some reason a vampire bites an animal, but somehow he doesn't get to kill it, does the animal become a vampire-animal thing?

Chosen answer: Stephenie Meyer said that the animal would be killed by the venom rather than transformed. This is also true of werewolves being bit by vampires.

Question: Do the vampires have fangs?

Chosen answer: Not these vampires. They are predators but their teeth are considered "normal", as these stories have been written.

Brenda Elzin

Yes that is correct.

Question: Just saw the movie tonight and loved it, the music especially. I have two questions in one. First, why is it again that Edward and the other vampires glitter in the sunlight? I'm sure they explained it, but I'm hard of hearing and our theater doesn't have very good speakers. Secondly, what is the name of the first song that plays when the credits are switching to the water shimmering in the background? I came in early and heard it once, then stayed during the credits to hear it again.

Chosen answer: The vampires in Twilight glitter because they are not "typical" vampires. The author wanted to address the sunlight issue in a different manner than the "normal" vampire lore, so she created her own vampire mythology in which instead of vampires being harmed by the sun, their skin reflects it back in an odd, and beautiful way. The second song in the credits is "Leave Out All The Rest" by Linkin Park. The third song is "Decode" by Paramore. I posted both because I couldn't remember which song played during that part of the credits.
