Continuity mistake: When the water wheel begins to roll, with Norrington and Will atop and then snatches up Jack, its blades (buckets on the outside rim) and two sides of the axle face a specific direction as it gains speed. Now compare the following two shots, as the water wheel rolls away from the camera: When the wheel rolls, just as Jack falls out, after hitting his head on the bar. Then later on the beach, as Elizabeth watches, just as the wheel rolls and falls over in the close-up, the wheel is actually rolling in the opposite direction - just note its blades. Also note the bizarre change of its axle's wide and narrow sides.

Continuity mistake: When the huge water wheel rolls to the beach and falls on its side, it falls with the broken, wide, wood side of the axle facing up. However, as Will and Norrington climb out, inexplicably it's the slim side of the water wheel's axle that is now facing up. But in a following shot, it is the other way round again.

Continuity mistake: When Elizabeth is playing puppeteer with her wedding dress in order to get to Tortuga, she sweeps the dress past the captain's windows first, in order to get their attention. No way could she have done this from the mast on which she was standing. One, the distance between her position and the area through which the dress passed by were too far. Two, even if it were close enough, the wind was blowing at least partially against their sails, and the dress would have been blown closer to the windows. Three, even if she just stood on the deck above the captain's windows, she would not have had enough time to move from that position to the mast considering that the men in the captain's quarters rushed out to see the "spirit."

In the next shot, as Will reaches sleeping Jones, both quills are leaning away from the keys, and an extra quill stick (feather free) suddenly appears.

Continuity mistake: After Jack has escaped from the island where he was going to be burned, the makeup on his face (the eyes) changes between scenes. The makeup has faded quite considerably when he first boards the Black Pearl then in a later scene the makeup is neater and clearer.

Continuity mistake: After Jack explains the legend of Davy Jones to Elizabeth, and they have found their heading, Elizabeth's braid is going down her back. When Jack points Elizabeth toward the ship her braid is now on her right shoulder. She doesn't move her head and there is not enough time for her to move it herself.

Continuity mistake: When bound Jack begins his escape, he happens upon a young cannibal boy holding utensils, whose face and body are painted. A bit later, on the beach, the paint differs greatly - note the lines, etc.

Continuity mistake: When Jack "intuitively" inquires about Elizabeth's feelings, the dangling beads in his hair are over his dreadlocks, near his shoulder. Next close-up they're tucked under his hair. This type of thing - with all the do-dads in Jack's hair - occurs numerous times throughout the film.

Continuity mistake: At Tia Dalma's, when Will tosses the knife at the tabletop, there is a tall slim candle beside his right hand. However, in the next shot when Tia Dalma says, "Against the cold and the sorrow," the candle beside his right hand is now very short, though no time has passed. (This doesn't refer to the short, wide candle in both shots.)

Continuity mistake: When Norrington runs with the chest, he falls and his sword ends up beside shell-head when he also falls. After the quick shot of his headless body running with the chest, in the next close-up the sword is farther away from shell-head, just before his crab-like legs appear.

The shot cuts to Will who asks simply "How did he mark you?" at which point the shot cuts back to Beckett and the formerly red-hot poker is already now a much cooler black. Glowing hot iron does not cool that quickly in air.

Mistakes

There are six metal bars mounted around the circumference of the water wheel's axle. In the wheel's interior, when Jack frees himself he lands on his feet, begins to run and promptly hits his head on one of those axle bars, then falls out. Moments later, when Jack returns and runs in the wheel, he is shorter (way more than a foot) than all six spinning axle bars, which would make that previous shot impossible, however humorous it is.
