Question: Why are the audience members at Don Juan shocked at the "provocative" nature of the performance? I get people were more conservative during those times, but didn't the audience members choose to go to that play? Were people just excited to see a new play and did not expect to the performance to be provocative?

New this month Question: During the "Angel of Music" scene, Christine sees the Phantom in the mirror. is the mirror a two way, and the Phantom is on the other side, watching her? or is it a hallucination? As well (related) the room that Christine is staying in after singing "Think of Me", is that her permanent room? Or is her bedroom the one in the cellar-type with wire beds? And the big, flower one is switched out for the lead? If it is her permanent room, the phantom has some explaining to do.

Question: In the final scene, when we see the rose and ring that the Phantom have left on Christine's grave, we also see that she died two years before the scene takes place. Why did the Phantom wait two years to leave the ring on the grave? Was he previously unaware of Christine's death?

New this month Answer: I like to think that he would always place a rose there, possibly every week or so, and they never had the ring on them. And he knew When Raoul would be there, so he placed them when he knew he would be alone with her. As for the two years later, since the phantom "knew" when Raoul came... he especially put that ring there. Just to let Raoul know about his love for Christine and the fact he is still living. He knew Raoul would visit then, and knew what to do. (This is only a theory I have proposed. As for a genuine answer... I am not aware of one.) Hope this maybe helped.

Question: Who is the old man in the wheelchair who puts the music box with the monkey on Christine's grave at the end?I thought it might be Raoul but the box belonged to the phantom and he hated the phantom.

Chosen answer: It is Raoul. He gets the music box because Christine obviously loved it, shown by the fact that she had obviously described and remembered it in such great detail many years after last seeing it. He buys it for her as a gift of love, even though she has died.

Question: During point of no return, the phantom has no disguise on. If everyone was after him, why didn't anyone stop the performance and capture the phantom?

Chosen answer: During "Point of No Return, " the Phantom shares a stage with the very vulnerable Christine. He is still masked, though it is a mask other than his trademark white face covering. The Phantom is well known as a murderer and an escape artist. This is the the equivalent of a hostage situation. To rush the stage might risk lives, and everyone in the know is proceeding with caution. During the song, we do get glimpses of police moving about, and Raoul and others looking concerned, subtly signaling one another and considering their next move. The stage crew seems confused. The dancers go on with the show. And law enforcement officers await the right moment to advance. It also gives us the opportunity to enjoy a dramatic musical number that rushing the stage would interrupt.

Question: What does the Phantom eat and what does he spend his salary on? Presumably he can't just go to the shops etc with his mask on. If he doesn't leave the opera house where does he learn his skills like driving a carriage, who does he practice sword fighting with? Wouldn't his health suffer if he spends decades living in this damp cold rat infested place wading through lakes all the time? He even complains about it being cold himself at one point. Surely if it snowing outside his lair can't be warm but he's not wearing much.

Chosen answer: First, it is established in the movie that he is dependant on Madame Giry and it is presumed she does his shopping for him. As for learning skills, it is established he is a genius and one can assume he is very well read. Additionally, for single handed skills, like driving a carriage, he can possibly go out at night to learn them. As for his living conditions, the human body adapts well to continuous conditions, it is how the people in Siberia can tolerate lower temperatures better than those who live close to the equator. Lastly, one can easily assume he has other (warmer) clothes that he wears off camera.

There is a character simply known as 'the Persian' He has known the Phantom his whole life and would have taught him horse driving. In the book, the Phantom has a life before the opera house where he would have learned fencing and torture. Also, the phantom knows all the secret passages. When it's cold he leaves his lair and lives someplace warmer.

Question: Is Il Muto an actual opera? I rather enjoyed it and thought I would try to see it.

Chosen answer: This is a very short, but very complex question about which dissertations are written. Here is my best attempt at a brief summary. Christine lives as a sheltered child-like woman in a highly patriarchal Victorian society. She is torn between two loves. There is Raoul, who represents safety, light, and a sort of romantic, adolescent view of what true love should mean. Then there is Erik, the Phantom, with whom Christine has had a long time bond. He has been to her like a guardian angel. He gave her music. He comforted her when her father died. And yet, as his role turns from that of protector and teacher to one of lustful suitor, he comes to represent darkness, passion, lust, obsession, and danger. He is unstable, driven to madness by a world of light he can never know. He is also, let's not forget, homicidal. Christine ultimately makes the only choice society makes available to her - the safe and sane choice. From the ending of the film, we learn that Christine remained wife to Raoul, but it is unclear how happily her life turned out. She probably always shared a connection to Erik, who possessed for her a depth of love she could never know from any other man. Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote a sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera" called "Love Never Dies." In it, we learn that the Phantom did, indeed, remain in Christine's life. The Phantom was controlling and abusive. Christine's love for him was based on pity and deception. The Phantom had planned to kill her right after marriage and blow up the entire opera house. When she offered him compassion and devotion, it was her bargaining for Raoul. Yes, Christine had a strong, complicated relationship with Erik, but they were not I love. When Erik realises this, he unites Raoul and begs forgiveness for his misdeeds.

New this month Answer: First of all, Eric pretended to be a guardian angel sent from her dead father to teach her to sing. He continued this gaslighting throughout the movie / play, outright stating several times that he was her Angel of Music. Raul on the other hand, was her dear childhood friend, who represented memories with her father. Eric brought her down into his home under the pretense of having her sing for his music, then suddenly turned his tone into a romantic one and showed her and lifelike mannequin he made of her - that's incredibly creepy. At every point where things don't go his way, Eric throws a tantrum and ruins things for everyone in the Opera House. By the end of the show, Christine is terrified of him and is begging Raul to protect and hide her from Eric. We are led to believe that this is a love triangle, but this is an incel man forcing love on to an unsuspecting woman, and when she chooses another man he acts out in his typical fashion, putting them both in danger. It would be hard to love someone like that for anyone.

Question: The last few seconds in the movie - the rose with the ring lying beside Christine's grave - turns back to colour. I can't figure out the message behind. Can anyone help?

Chosen answer: The rose tied with the black ribbon and the ring were left by the Phantom. The rose symbolizes the love the Phantom and Christine had for each other, and its turning to red shows that this love still exists beyond death.

Question: After Christine chooses Raoul at the end of the movie, does the Phantom keep living in the opera house?

Chosen answer: It is revealed in the sequel, Love Never Dies, that when the Phantom disappears he makes his way to Coney Island with Meg and Madame Giry. However, he does stay in Paris for a short amount of time (but it isn't known where) because on the night before Christine's wedding, she finds the Phantom and they make love, but then he flees because he felt ashamed of what he did. This is explained in "Beneath a Moonless Sky."

Question: This might be an irrelevant question, because I can't remember if this happened in the movie or not, but in the book the Phantom asks Madame Giry for a foot stool - why did he want one?

Chosen answer: The Phantom's frequent request for a footstool in box 5, which he demanded be left empty - not sold to patrons, does come from the book (chapter 4, pages 11-14), and is not mentioned in the movie. It's never made quite clear precisely the purpose of the footstool. According to Mme. Giry, "I brought the footstool. Of course, it wasn't for himself he wanted it, but for his lady! But I never heard her nor saw her." She did find evidence of her, however. One night, a lady's fan was left behind. She also mentioned that the Phantom would leave a gratuity for her services. There is never a clear identity given of "his lady." I presume it may have been used for a young Christine Daae to stand on, so she could better see over the rail of the box to the Opera on stage below when Erik brought her. But if that's true, it is still unclear why nobody ever saw her, and why she had never seen the Phantom.

Question: I re-watched this movie recently. It seems everyone in the opera knows about the existence of the Phantom, which includes Christine. My question is does it ever occur to her that her angel of music = the Phantom (before he reveals this to her)? I know she doesn't from the movie obviously. But really imagine if you were her, it's hard not to relate your angel of music to the Phantom, both are hidden and happen only in the opera (coaching/singing etc) the years living there. And why are people afraid of the Phantom? Does he commit anything evil or murder before the movie (before Christine takes Carlotta's place)?

Chosen answer: The "Opera Ghost" had actually been causing various acts of mischief and mayhem long before the events of the movie begin with the new owners purchasing the opera. The previous owners were being extorted for money. Fears and rumors about the Phantom were rampant. Early in the film, he causes a backdrop to fall near Carlotta, for whom he has had a lasting disdain. Christine probably should have made the connection between the Phantom and her "angel of music." But the "angel" had actually been introduced to her as a tutor and mentor by her father, whom she loved and trusted, so she had no reason to view him suspiciously. Christine was also very sheltered, incredibly naive, and captivated by her teacher and suitor. Their bond was so strong, and her dependence so great, she was blinded to what seems to us an obvious connection.

Question: In the extras DVD of the deluxe boxset, there are a few videos of Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman performing the opera (and from what I can tell the video looks from around the time or the original stage show). But it looks to be very much done for the camera (rather than just a recording of the show being performed live). Was the whole opera done in this way, using the original cast? And was it released? I can't find any reference to it at all on IMDB. If it has been released, where can I find it?

Chosen answer: In 1986-1987, before the show actually premiered, a few songs featuring Sarah Brightman were released to promote it, including the signature theme, featuring both her and Steve Harley (and not, as is often assumed, Michael Crawford). Although the song is from the stage musical, the lyrics used were not the definitive ones and the accompanying video was specially recorded for promotion purposes and was not from the actual show.

Question: I am curious what that round thing is during the Think of Me sequence. When the camera goes down through the grate to get to the phantom below the stage, It is on the floor right next to the grate. It looks like an ash tray but I am not sure.

Chosen answer: The large gold round object is definately an ashtray, as you can see the cigarettes in it. The smaller black round object looks to me like an inkwell.

Question: How is the woman at the beginning of the movie Meg Giry, as is stated in several answers here? They call her Madame Giry, if it were Meg they would call her Mademoiselle Giry, unless she was married, in which case she would be Madame with whatever surname she received upon marriage. So wouldn't it need to be Meg's mother, Madame Giry?

Chosen answer: The honorific "Mademoiselle" is not an indication only of marital status, but it has a connotation of youth (and, ostensibly, virginity). Beyond a certain age, it would be considered inappropriate and possibly insulting or mocking to continue to use the term "Mademoiselle." "Madame" is generally adopted by women of a certain age, regardless of their marital status. It is not unlike "Señora" and "señorita" in Spanish. An interesting note - there is a currently a movement in France to remove "Mademoiselle" from French common usage, as it is considered by some sexist to classify women by age and/or marital status, when men in France are uniformly referred to only as "Monsieur."

Question: This question might sound odd, but how has La Carlotta become so successful if a lot of people don't like her voice very much (as seen when she sings "Think of Me" before Christine tries)?

Chosen answer: The fact that the "in the know" people don't like her doesn't mean that she doesn't have a huge public and make a killing at the box office. On top of that, she was their "Diva." She may not have necessarily had many fans (in some versions they comment that there were no refunds, with Christine singing). Therefore, it can be assumed that given that she was the Diva if she didn't get her way, things would be bad on their end. Likely why her husband (who also did not sing well, due to his deep accent) was another main role in all the operas. They may have also thought there was nobody else who could handle the main roles. It takes a strong person to take on so many lines. And you need to project your voice, which heaven knows she had a loud one.

Question: Why does the Phantom leave Christine's ring on her grave? It is the only personal possession of hers that he has and therefor very important to him.

Chosen answer: That is open to each viewer's interpretation. I like to think it's his way of acknowledging Raoul, to let him know he too is still alive and has kept on loving her during all those years. They both end up leaving something of significance in each other's relationship with Christine.

Question: Toward the end of the movie, why does Christine kiss the Phantom if she has decided to be with Raoul? Does this mean she had changed her mind to be with the Phantom after all?

Chosen answer: It can be seen in so many different ways. Christine kissed Erik (the phantom) with passion and she even touched the deformed side of his face with tenderness! She truly wanted to kiss him at that moment. In the movie it didn't seem forced. She was probably heartbroken seeing not only Raul being threatened in that way, but Erik being tortured by his own hate and despair. She came towards him wanting not just to release Raul but to release him from his darkness and his feeling of hate and despair for the world and himself, showing that he can be loved, that she does love him and that he can love too, in her heart he is still her angel, she cannot help but do as her heart told her. And in her heart she felt the need to show him that he was not alone and to kiss him. She didn't kiss him because she wanted to stay with him but definitely not just to save Raul, what there was between the phantom and Christine will always be special, that connection... And when the phantom finally realizes that he has been loved in that way, even with his haunted face, her kiss made him more human, he truly realizes how much he loves Christine and so, because he loves her too much he lets her go, not wanting to force her anymore, also knowing that a life with him and his marked sad fate will be torture for her, and he cannot bear to see her unhappy even if that means that he will be unhappy and incomplete forever! Her kindness and love disarmed him and shed warmth to his heart, which was why he let them go and in the end was crying.

Question: If the Phantom is so in love with Christine why does he just let her go? We know that he is prepared to kill (and has) for her so it can't be that his moral compass prevents him from forcing her to love him. Seems to be slightly counter productive considering the fact that Christine actually consents to being with him.

Chosen answer: It is often said that the biggest gift you can give someone that you love is their freedom. That is why the Phantom lets her go.

Question: Why is Erik referred to as both "angel" and "demon"?

Answer: In my opinion, it is a comparison of who he is truly striving to be, in comparison to his physical appearance. Christine had an angel of music, who was her tutor. The phantom believed that the angel was him. Also, it could be that he sings so well (like the voice of an angel), but has a "hideous" physical appearance (like one might think of when they think of a Demon).

Question: Why did Christine want to keep her and Raoul's engagement a secret?

Answer: So that the Phantom didn't find out.

Question: This has bothered me since the first time I saw Love Never Dies. The dates for Christine's death don't line up, so I'm hoping for some insight as to why. On Christine's grave stone in Phantom, the dates 1854-1917 are given. Making her about 63 when she dies. However, if it's 1880 at the time she sings "think of me" that makes her 16... and then in Love Never Dies, her and Eric are saying how it's been "10 long years." Making her 26. But then she's shot and presumably dies, in 1890 rather than 27 years later in 1917. Even if there's a couple years in between the ending of this movie and the point that Christine last sees the phantom, that is a lot of time to fill up! So... am I missing something? Or is this a big plot hole?

Answer: The movie was produced in (2004) six years before the debut of Love Never Dies. I suggest watching the stage production as that better matches up with the sequel (but still has plot holes). The movie, however, added a few bits, not in the stage production which I presume Webber based Love Never Dies off. However, in my opinion, Webber just lost all common sense in the making of Love Never Dies so it is easier to think of it as it's own entity rather than a sequel to Phantom.

I found this site after recently seeing Love Never Dies, and searching for answers on the plot of that musical. I guess I'm just gonna go with your statement "Webber just lost all common sense in the making of Love Never Dies." The music was great, the sets were classic Lloyd Webber spectacle...but the plot just made no damn sense.

I agree with your question and came across this site to find an answer to this question. I'm confused as well. But it makes sense that Webber forgot the details of Phantom of the Opera and the grave stone. Also, maybe because Love Never Dies is more so an alternate ending for Phantom and Christine versus the accuracy.

Question: In the movie and in most of the live shows Christine is brunette but I have heard that in the original book she is blonde. Is that true and if so, do you know where in the book they say it?

Chosen answer: In the English translation I've read (I have not read the original French version); in chapter V, The Enchanted Violin, when the old man is telling the story, it reads "Raoul looked at Christine's blue eyes and golden hair". It should be noted that Christine is Swedish and black hair is uncommon among the Swedes.

Question: At the Masquerade Ball, why is Raoul wearing the same jacket twice, with one arm out?

Chosen answer: Consider that the event is a masquerade ball, where everyone's attire is meant to be intricate to the point of being "overdesigned." Look carefully. In Raoul's case, he is wearing a dark navy blue, uniform style form-fitting jacket with horizontal gold braiding flanked by gold buttons, shoulder epaulets and a standing collar. What you see draping his left side is a matching short jacket over the shoulder, which is emblematic of a classic hero in art and literature. The short jacket is sewn on as a design element, of course - not just draped there, as it would fall. So one arm isn't exactly "out." You see the sleeve and the braiding of the short draped jacket dangling behind him when he and Christine are dancing. There is also a shirt underneath it all with more of the same gold braiding design.

Chosen answer: She probably says the same thing we hear, but the sound isn't properly synched.

Question: One of the Trivia entries for Phantom tells of a reference to Cats in "Masquerade." Well, I have yet to find it. Can someone be more specific about where it is, or perhaps include a time code? And are the actors really dressed like cats from the show, or do they only show a vague resemblance?

Chosen answer: The scene is at about 01:18:44. It's when they sing "FACES! Drink it up, drink it in..." They are dressed like cats, but not the cats from the show, and they merely strike a pose similar to a promotional poster of the show.

Question: At the beginning of the movie, during the auction, when the chandelier rises, the seats in the opera house are dusty. At the end of the movie, it is seen that the seats burn when the chandelier falls. Is this a mistake, or did they rebuild the opera house after the accident?

Chosen answer: Considering the fact that nearly 50 years have passed between both sets of events, it is conceivable that the Opera House could have been rebuilt, at least partially, at some point before being abandoned for good.

Question: I know the story about how Andrew Lloyd Webber had planned to adapt his original musical to film with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford in their original roles, but then Webber and Brightman divorced and things never panned out. But now after all these years, why didn't Joel Shumacher contact Sarah Brightman and/or Michael Crawford to do the film? It seems they were meant to play the leads. If I do recall, Michael Crawford had been contacted but declined. Can somebody shed some light?

Chosen answer: Schumacher wanted young, up-and-coming actors to play the roles. Brightman and (especially) Crawford were too old for his taste. Besides, Christine is supposed to be a very young lady; a middle-aged Brightman would have been laughable at best seen up close.

Question: How old is the Phantom supposed to be? When we are shown his childhood, he looks as though he should be the same age as Madame Giry, but he only looks like being in his 20s-30s.

Chosen answer: In the Susan Kay book, there is a quote in which the Phantom says that he is "old enough to be Christine's father", which would make sense, given that Mme. Giry is like a mother to her, and Mme. Giry and the Phantom seem to be close in age. Joel Schumacher wanted to go with a "younger, sexier" cast, but the age difference still seems to work - Emmy Rossum (Christine) was seventeen at the time of filming, while Gerard Butler (Phantom) was about thirty-four.

Question: How did the Phantom always know where Christine was?

Chosen answer: The Phantom followed Christine almost constantly, always staying hidden in the shadows, nooks and crannies so as to not be detected. She was his obsession. Stealth was his expertise.

Question: I just wanted to know, in the prima dona song the lyrics say something like "a chorus girl who's gone and slept with her patron". Are they just making an assumption that they slept together or did they actually do it because in this point of the film she had only just come back from the phantom's lair and had only been in the same room as him in one scene.

Chosen answer: They assume Christine spent the night with Raoul. After all, they'd left him in her dressing room right before she disappeared.

Question: Is there any explanation in the book as to why the Phantom is deformed? I've heard something about acid, but I don't know if that's correct.

Chosen answer: Although there are myths and rumours as to the origins of the Phantom's deformity (acid, fires, etc.), it is simply a birth defect. In the novel, the birth defect covered his whole face. The idea of the distortion covering half his face for the musical originated from photographs of World War II soldiers covering half of their badly injured faces. For the film version, makeup artist Jenny Shircore based the Phantom's disfigurement on a medical condition she had seen.

The half face design was actually created to better allow for singing, as a full face mask wouldn't be suitable.

Question: The first time Christine goes to the Phantom's lair, why does she pass out when she sees herself with a wedding dress? At least it looks like one.

Chosen answer: I believe it was the shock of seeing her exact likeness in a wedding dress, and the first overwhelming realization of the Phantom's obsession with her. That, in combination with the dank, dark and humid environment, a lifetime of heavily corseted dresses, and a wan and frail constitution, all conspired to Christine's loss of consciousness.

Question: Why did the Phantom always ask for Box 5 to be open for him? I know he wanted to watch the play from it, but if someone wanted to find him (after the trouble he causes to make Christine the star of the plays), they would know exactly where to look for him during any play.

Chosen answer: In Gaston Leroux's novel, box 5 has in its wall a secret passageway with special acoustic properties that allows him to watch shows without being seen while remaining hidden. That is why he picked that box and no one ever sees him in it. Legend even has it that a column in box 5 of the actual Opéra Garnier rings hollow when you knock on it.

Answer: Actually it says three months, I'm watching it right now.

Answer: It is actually six months. Masquerade is shown as "6 months later, " and the lyrics, if you look at them, say "six months of relief, of delight..."

Chosen answer: As said in Masquerade, "Three months of relief, of delight, of Elysian peace."

Question: The Phantom refers to himself as Christine's "angel of music" in the song called "The Mirror". How did he know that Christine thought her father would send her an angel? Did he know her father?

Chosen answer: As shown in the movie, Christine has spent time praying in the chapel as a child. It would not be unexpected for a child of such a young age to literally speak to her dead father in such situations, mentioning his promise in the process, thus allowing the Phantom to hear about it. In the book, though, it is understood that Mr. Daaé and the Phantom knew each other. By sending his daughter to the Opéra populaire after his death, he might have wanted the Phantom to look over her.

Question: Does anyone think that Meg, Madame Gerty's daughter is a love child with the Phantom?

Chosen answer: It is conceivable, I suppose, but extremely unlikely. The role of Madame Giry (the correct spelling) in the opera house, and her relationship to Erik (the Phantom) and Christine Daae differ somewhat between the book, the stage musical, and the 2004 film. But never is a romantic connection between Madame Giry and Erik, past or present, even implied. She functions more as a knowledgeable intermediary and is more or less employed by the Phantom to represent his interests to the Opera House administration, even though she had never seen him, but had only heard his voice. Also, if Meg were his daughter, it wouldn't make sense, given his personality, that Erik would have absolutely no apparent relationship with her. Further, given the dramatic payoff that could be added to the story by revealing that Meg is the Phantom's love child, it is all but inconceivable that such a relationship would be salient in the mind of author Gaston Leroux, but that he would never make it explicit. Ultimately, anything is possible. But in the absence of any evidence to support the theory, I would say it's a pretty clear bet that Meg Giry has no blood relationship to the Phantom.

Question: Why was Meg the one to lead the mob? I know that Christine was her friend and all but was it because she was mad Madame Giry didn't let her go with Raoul?

Chosen answer: It seems you likely answered your own question. Christine was her friend. The adrenaline borne of her concern for Christine likely overwhelmed any feelings of resentment or jealousy she might have felt, so that probably wasn't a factor. Maybe the better question would be why NOT Meg to lead the mob? She and Christine both grew up in the Opera House, and she was particularly familiar with the hallways and catacombs of the building. Being a woman at that time period works against the notion that she would lead a mob. But in this circumstance, she is just as logical a leader as anyone.

Question: If Minnie Driver sang "Learn to be Lovely" and came out with an album this year, why don't they use her singing voice in the movie?

Chosen answer: Because her voice is ill-equipped for the vocal demands of Carlotta's role.

Question: Perhaps an opera aficionado could help me with this one. During Il Muto, we see the story of a count and countess. But when we are taken to the ballet from act three, the ballet doesn't seem to go along with the opera. Is this common in opera and why, or was it a director's decision?

Chosen answer: What we see of Il Muto is the very beginning of Act 1. The ballet they switch to is somewhere in Act 3, so a lot of stuff happened in between that we don't know about, so the story might have taken us to a forest at some point, similar to "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Question: After Piangi dies after Christine unmasks the Phantom for a second time, what happened to Carlotta?

Answer: Nothing, we can see she's holding his body and mourning his death.

Question: How old is Raoul? In the film, they mention that he and Christine were childhood friends, but at the auction in the beginning he looks the same age as Madame Giry who is old enough to be Christine's mother.

Chosen answer: He is roughly the same age as Christine, who is 17 in the movie. Raoul appears to be in his early twenties. The woman called "Madame Giry" in the opening scene is Meg Giry, who was a few years younger than the others.

Question: When Christine wakes up from her faint/sleep and starts singing "I Remember", she walks over to where the Phantom is sitting and is gently touching his face as he enjoys the feeling of intimacy. Soon after that though, she suddenly takes off his mask (to his horror). Did she walk over to him planning to do that all along, pretending to be interested in getting closer to him just so she could see what was under the mask? She doesn't seem to me like such a premeditated type, but it also doesn't seem credible that she was interested in getting closer to him and decided that suddenly unmasking him was a way to get even closer to him.

Chosen answer: She was planning to. She sang "who was that shape in the shadows, whose is the face in the mask"

Question: During "Think of Me", the camera goes down into the cellars and we get our first look at the Phantom. Can anyone see what he is doing?

Chosen answer: He is merely listening to Christine singing, enjoying her triumph and nodding in approval at his pupil.

Question: I'm very confused about the opening scene with Raoul and Madame (Meg?) Giry at the auction. Which one is it? Meg or Madame Giry? At one point on the corrections page for this movie it says that it is indeed Meg, yet on the questions page it says that it is Madame Giry. Is there any absolute idea to who it is?

Chosen answer: This keeps going back and forth with arguments on both sides. I'll present them both and readers can make up their own minds! 1. It is Madame Giry. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Joel Schumacher said it was her. If you look really closely you can see the appearance is the same, just wrinkled. Besides, Raoul and Meg barely interacted so to make it that Madame Giry and Raoul are seeing each other again makes it more powerful. 2. It is Meg because Madame Giry would be dead, considering the fact that she and the Phantom were about the same age. Considering the fact that Meg and Christine were the best-est of friends, she would know why Raoul was bidding higher than Meg was. The monkey was yet another symbol of love between the Phantom and Christine and the monkey was a dear artifact for Raoul and Christine. Since Raoul was older during that scene, so would be Meg, when, they too, were about the same age.

Question: When Christine is taken into the Phantom's lair for the second time - after the chandelier crash - and Raoul comes to save her, they all sing an overlapping reprise of The Point of No Return. The Phantom sings The Point of No Return, Christine sings Angel of Music, but what does Raoul sing? Is it a new tune or a particular song from the movie?

Chosen answer: He sings the tune from All I Ask of You.

Question: A thought occurred to me and my mum after we had seen the film at the cinema. Mme. Giry and the Phantom are friends, and probably grew up seeing a lot of each other, and there is never any mention of Meg's father of Mme. Giry's husband. Is it possible the Phantom could be Meg's father?

Chosen answer: This is very common to think among the questions I have heard. In the 2004 film during "Down once more/Track down this murderer" the Phantom says: "That fate which condemns me to wallow in blood, has also declined me the joys of the flesh." He is a virgin. Also, in the original story, the two were not friends at all. Giry did his bidding because he led her to believe, through a note given to her, that he could make Meg some form of royalty or the next big thing. Madame Giry and Meg were both actually very intolerable beings, Meg constantly treating Christine like dirt and being her biggest bully (even more than Carlotta) It is likely the phantom never even lifted a finger to try and assist Meg because of that.

Question: I've got a question about "The Point of no Return" scene. Is Christine just cleverly acting her role or does she mean what she is singing - "these shameless words"? Raoul is suspecting the second and the Phantom is, to some extent deceived, but what about Christine? The question is presumably open to interpretations, but it would be nice to know your opinion.

Chosen answer: I believe that to some extent, Christine truly believes what she is saying to the Phantom. After all, in the sequel "Love Never Dies," it is revealed that she did have an affair and a child with the Phantom. However, I think she also realizes what her life would be like with the Phantom, and that isn't necessarily what she wants, so she chooses to be with Raoul.

Question: When Christine is in the graveyard, why does the Phantom try to lure her into what I think is her father's grave? What would he have done to her?

Chosen answer: The Phantom tries to lure Christine to the grave because it is the first time in three months that she has been away from Raoul long enough. It's basically his only opportunity to lure her back to his lair in order to seduce her once more.

Question: When the phantom disappears at the end why does he leave his mask behind? I mean does he get a new one or does he now live without it?

Chosen answer: The abandoned mask is a symbol of the Phantom's continuing presence, despite his apparent physical absence. He has already been publicly unmasked, both physically and, to an extent, psychologically. He has conceded that he has lost Christine to Raoul whom he has freed. He has abandoned his lair. All that was his facade, he has either given up or has been taken from him. The mask is the final symbolic gesture of that facade being relinquished, leaving behind further mystery regarding his whereabouts. Does he now live without it? I guess that's left unclear. However, I don't think it's beyond reason to assume he has, or has created more than one copy of the mask - if for no other reason than anything in pure white must be difficult to keep clean, what with the dust all over the opera house, the dirt of the streets, the humidity of his cavern, and the occasional splatter of blood to contend with.

Chosen answer: Simply that he thinks Raoul is a fop that looks much nicer on the outside than he probably is on the inside. He's jealous and believes Raoul is using Christine.

Chosen answer: Midgets were common at the time in that type of shows, where they were used as a comic relief.

Question: Why are the Phantom's footsteps walking distance when he runs to the statue? Also, when did he learn to climb so swiftly?

Chosen answer: Not everyone runs in big strides. The phantom has also had most of his life to master climbing, sneaking, hiding, etc. To see and take what he wants from the theatre without being seen, in his youth he had little to do except explore and learn everything about the place and the fastest ways to get where he wants to go.

Question: When the Phantom takes Christine's engagement ring at the Masquerade ball, does she ever get it back, or is it the same ring he has proposed to her with?

Answer: In the movie, the ring that the Phantom gives Christine at the end of the movie is the same ring that he took from her at the ball and is the same one that he left at her grave (since she gave it back to him before she left).

Chosen answer: The ring that Phantom gives to Christine is a different one. In the stage production, the Phantom never takes the ring.

Question: Who is the old lady at the auction with Raoul? I thought it was Madame Giry because that is what the announcer called her but the age doesn't make sense so I thought that it might be her daughter, Meg. Anyone have the answer?

Chosen answer: It is Meg. If she didn't marry then she would have kept her maiden name of Giry. Mme Giry was about 20 years older than Raoul so that would have made her in her 90's.

Question: One mistake refers to Christine's "sexual awakening". Did she actually sleep with the Phantom of the Opera or did she just spend the night there?

Chosen answer: She just spent the night there. The whole time while she was asleep he was playing music.

Question: Madame Giry has history with the Phantom but she still seems to be frightened by him and wont let Meg go to his lair. Would the Phantom actually harm either of them?

Chosen answer: Mme Giry is afraid of him because while she is his friend and his willing means of communication with the outside world, she knows full well of what he's capable. But unless she betrayed him, it's unlikely he'd harm her as she's the only friend he's ever known. And he would have no more reason to hurt Meg than he would anyone else: if she doesn't get in the way of his plans, she's safe. If her mother prevents her from going to the lair, it only because of the violence that will take place there momentarily.

Answer: I have always thought it was because he has set many automatic traps along the passageway, which only he knows fully how to avoid. The "hand at the level of your eyes" warning was to prevent automated nooses from capturing you.

Question: During the "Don Juan" opera, when do Christine and Raoul realize that it's the Phantom onstage, instead of the actor?

Chosen answer: Christine recognises him as soon as he opens his mouth - you see her being slightly shocked. Raoul takes a bit more time, and it's not as obvious. I'd say when you see him getting half up, that's when it dawns on him, but that's open to interpretation.

Chosen answer: It is the family crest.

Question: Why do they sometimes put "La" in front of Carlotta's name? I'm sure it's something to do with the Italian/Spanish language but I took the class a long time ago.

Chosen answer: It is a common practice to refer to an operatic diva as La , e.g. Leontyne Price as La Price and sometimes you'll even hear Barbra Streisand called "La Streisand".

Question: What's the deal with Phantom's magical lasso? One of the actors talks about it. What is this magical lasso, and did Phantom ever use it?

Chosen answer: It's what he uses to kill Buquet, and what he tried to strangle Raoul with at the end. It's not really magical though - that's just Buquet over exaggerating for the sake of his story.

Question: Why did Madame Giry silently watch the Phantom lock Christine's dressing room door?

Answer: Giry had known the Phantom since they were children, knew what his life was like then, and she has great pity for him (and great admiration, as a lover of the arts herself.) She deliberately distances herself from his wrong doings until Raul convinces her to speak up. She also understood the Phantom didn't intend to harm Christine.

Question: During "The Phantom of The Opera", when the Phantom takes Christine to his lair using the mirror passageway to his lair, it was well lit up with candles but when Meg discovers the passageway, it is dark and filled with rats. Were the candlabras just in Christine's imagination or were they real?

Answer: Almost assuredly real. The candelabras were in the Phantom's control to make appear or disappear. He brought them forward to light their entrance into the lair. However, it was generally in his best interests to keep the passageway dark and shadowy. The rats were always there, regardless. But, as rats are won't to do, scurried away from light and human movement.

Question: When Christine rips off the Phantom's mask in "The Point of No Return" why does his hair become blonde? It was still black when she took his mask off the first time.

Answer: He wears a black wig along with his mask, to cover the missing hair on the side of his head. The first time she only removed the mask, while in the performance she removed both.

Question: I have an oddly specific question. I am writing a fan fiction of the Phantom of the Opera, and only using the movie as source material. Does the movie ever state that the Phantom's name is Erik, or is that just from the book?

Answer: They don't state his name in the movie.

Question: Did Raoul actually love Christine? Or did he just take interest in her because she was the lead role who was also pretty?

Answer: He was in love with her.

Chosen answer: She's afraid that the Phantom would kill Meg to keep the location of his lair secret.

Question: Is it me or is there a reason why madame Giry has a french accent whereas her daughter Meg has an English one? Considering they live in France shouldn't Meg's accent have been french too?

Chosen answer: Mme Giry's accent is not meant to be "French" per se. The various accents used in the movie can be thought of as reflecting of the various accents one would encounter in such a cosmopolitan place as a late-1800s Paris Opera house, with people coming from all over France (yes, there are various French accents like there are various English ones) and Europe. Mme Giry and Meg's accents being different only shows that Mme Giry didn't grown up in the same place where she raised Meg. The same thing happens nowadays with immigrants' families, where parents speak with a different accent than their children's.

Question: I know that Minnie Driver's vocals were dubbed for the singing roles by a true opera singer, but were her speaking roles dubbed as well? Did she lip-sync her entire script?

Chosen answer: Margaret Preece provided the "Singing Voice of Carlotta" only (as listed in the closing credits). Minnie Driver provided all remaining aspects of her performance herself as documented in numerous interviews both live and in print media.

Question: I've always been bothered by the pronunciation of Raoul's name. Based on the spelling, I would have thought that it would be pronounced "Ra-ool", but for the most part in the movie, it's pronounced "Ral" (like 'Ralph' without the 'ph'). Which way is correct?

Chosen answer: It all depends on the native language and dialectual region of the person with the name. In Spanish, the name would be RA ool, but in other regions, it's rowl, ral, and other things. As another example, Ralph is pronounce rAfe in many regions.

Question: Where can I find some hand held fans like the ones used in Masquerade? I'm pretty sure they don't sell them in regular department stores, like Wal-Mart or something, but I can't think of where to look.

Chosen answer: They have them at Party City. try other party goods stores or costume shops.

Question: How come they cut an entire verse from the song "the Phantom of the Opera"?

Chosen answer: You'll have to ask Joel Schumacher on that one but basically it's just a matter of making the movie work. There were a number of changes when the musical was adapted to the screen. For example, the falling chandelier occurred just before the end of Act 1 in the musical, but was left until the end in the movie.

Question: How did the Phantom get his white mask to stick to his face?

Chosen answer: He has spirit gum (glue safe for human skin application) allowing the mask to stick to his face.

Question: Why does Christine unmask the phantom at the end of singing "Past the Point of No Return"?

Chosen answer: Because at that point, as unlikely as it seems, pretty much everybody else thought that was still Piangi (whom the Phantom killed just before replacing him). Since Christine has been used as a lure, she had to show the others that he was there.

Question: Why does Christine unmask the phantom twice in the movie? First unmasking: During first Christine's first time in Phantom's lair. Second unmasking, in front of everybody, after the phantom shows up on stage an sings with her.

Chosen answer: The first time is done out of curiosity. The second is Christine realizing that it's the Phantom singing instead of Piangi and doing it either out of fright or to alert the police.

Question: How does the Phantom get his salary? I know he tells Firmin, "Send it care of the Ghost by return of post," but what exactly does this mean? And also, what does he do with his salary?

Chosen answer: Mme Giry acts as the intermediary. She brings the notes, so sending the money by return of post means the money should be given to her to pass it on. As for what he does with it, the luxury of his clothing and lair bears witness that he doesn't pile it. He spends it on anything that will bring beauty around him, whether it's a wig, a mask, clothes, furniture or anything else. And it wouldn't be surprising if a few bribes weren't given here and there.

Question: I really liked the deleted song, "No One Would Listen". Is it available on any versions of the movie soundtrack? The one I've got only includes "Learn to be Lonely".

Chosen answer: There are currently two versions of the movie soundtrack in English. A one disc version contains the primary songs from the movie and a two-disc version that includes a complete production, including dialog. Neither contains (sadly) the song, "No One Would Listen." But Learn to be Lonely is simply a different version of No one Would Listen in which Minnie Driver (Carlotta) sings.

Chosen answer: He is supposed to be five years younger than her. And even if they were the same age, she is still alive, so why couldn't he?

Chosen answer: "Lorem Ipsum Dolor..." is the beginning of a piece of nonsense text that typesetters often use to hold the place where the actual text will be when it is written. You have either vastly misread the posters or seen a lot of pre-production posters.

Question: A friend and I were talking about the movie and about how Masquerade has a deeper meaning than just a party. She then tried to convince me that the phantom wrote all three operas based on how he was feeling. I think that the phantom only wrote Don Juan. Can someone enlighten me?

Chosen answer: The phantom only wrote Don Juan, the others are just being performed by the characters. The film takes place over a year and it is set in an opera house that needs to make money, so they put on other operas. The phantom tries to have input into the staging of the operas and enjoys watching them, but has not written all of them.

Chosen answer: Because it only slowed the action down without bringing anything new to the plot.

Question: After the song "The Point of No Return" Christine takes Erik's mask off and they go down to his lair. He drags her back near the fake doll that looks like her and Erik asks "Why? Why?" To what is he referring?

Answer: Why she couldn't love him back / why she betrayed him.

Question: At what point does Christine realise the "angel of music" is actually the Phantom? At first she doesn't seem to realise, but there is some point where she refers to the angel of music as the "Phantom" with "a face so distorted" To Raoul. So did she know the entire time? Or was there a point where she put the pieces together?

Answer: After Christine's starring debut at the opera house, the Phantom reveals himself to her just after she sings the reprise of "Angel of Music." He then brings Christine down to his lair during the song, "Phantom of the Opera." This is, in all likelihood, the point at which she puts two and two together.
