Ocean's Twelve

Question: What song was playing as Tess was on the plane to Rome?

New this week Question: Wouldn't Ocean's crew all be broke at the end, since the $198 million check includes Tolour's $97 million plus all of the combined money they had left?

New this week Answer: No, Tolour agrees to pay Ocean's crew's debt to Benedict if they win. $97 million is what they're short at the time of the conversation.

Chosen answer: It is set up in the previous scenes when the Ocean's crew listens to the tape finding out the NightFox hired Matsui to hire Danny Ocean. Matsui, being friends with Danny Ocean probably had no idea it was a set up. Most likely, Lahiri, putting most of what happened together in the aftermath of the robbery of the stock certificate in the previous scenes, told Matsui that he set up the Ocean's crew unknowingly. This seems the likely connection to the scene.

Question: I'm really bad at remembering faces - was just wondering if the guy who Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon meet, and eat with - and play the weird phrases game, is also Le Marque - so technically, did CZJ met her father unofficially, (before Pitt introduces him) when she was interrogating him?

Chosen answer: Le Marque and Matsui (the weird phrase guy) are played by Albert Finney and Robbie Coltrane, respectively (so no, she never met him before).

Question: When Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts and what's left of the gang go to the museum, several people tell Willis how much they liked him in "that one movie". Then they add something like "I knew it when she didn't speak to you in the restaurant". Are they referring to an actual movie?

Chosen answer: The Sixth Sense. They mean that they figured out the true nature of his character when his wife doesn't directly acknowledge his presence in a restaurant.

Question: What is the 'lost in translation' scene with Robbie Coltrane about? (is it actually a reference the the Bill Murray film?).

Chosen answer: A "lost in translation" is a kind of con - Danny, Rusty and Matsui basically pulled a prank on Linus to make him feel like he didn't know what they were talking about when, in fact, they were just speaking gibberish.

Question: What is the name of the song that is played when we first see Francois Toulour? It's the scene where Danny Ocean is telling his crew which jobs he has done.

Chosen answer: This song is listed in the credits (and is listed to be on the soundtrack). It's called Faust 72 performed by Dynastie Crisis. Here's a link to the audio on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INo-YT3Vyb8.

Question: When Isabel answered Rusty's phone, what was the ring tone?

BigOLB

Chosen answer: It was "Pretty in Pink", originally sung by The Psychedelic Furs for the Molly Ringwald movie of the same title.

Question: When Tess (pretending to be Julia Roberts) sees Bruce Willis in the suite, he asks, "Where's Danny?" and she replies that he's working. How does Bruce Willis know about Danny Ocean? Is there a different Danny connected to Julia Roberts in real life?

Chosen answer: Bruce isn't asking about Danny Ocean, he's asking about Julia's real life husband, Danny Moder.

Jane Doe

Question: How did Toulour know the security code to the warehouse where Ocean stored the stolen paintings?

Chosen answer: Toulour is a master thief so he manipulated his way into gaining access to the warehouse.

Toolio

Question: What is the song at the end of the film when they revealing how they stole the egg on the train? It was an homage to in-a-gadda-da-vida (the keyboard/bass solo bits). It is not the song on the soundtrack called "the real story" nor any other song on it. Thanks.

Kenneth Brown

Chosen answer: "Rito a Los Angeles" by Giuseppe de Luca.

Question: What is the name of the song played that Toulour breakedances with, to get through the lasers. It is not on the soundtrack.

Chosen answer: The song is the instrumental for "The a la Menthe" by French rappish group "La Caution".

Question: I understand why Ocean's group had to botch the heist at the end but why did they have to drag Tess into it if they already had the real egg? This would have removed the interesting twist where Julia Roberts plays Julia Roberts but other than that the second heist attempt seems unnecessary. Am I missing something?

Chosen answer: As evidenced from the first film and the sequel Danny Ocean was meticulous about every part of his heists and these botched attempts would fool Toulour into thinking they were failing to steal the "fake" egg. If the crew didn't make any attempts Toulour would know something was up. This was a large wager they had going between them and Toulour would be very suspicious as to why they weren't trying to steal the egg. Making them very public just enforced the fact that the crew had probably failed.

Question: Am I missing it or did Bruce Willis not get mentioned in the film credits?

Chosen answer: You are correct. Bruce Willis (and a few other like Topher Grace) do not appear in the credits. They are considered "uncredited" and it's not an oversight. I've questioned why well known actors don't receive credit and it's usually related to the Screen Actors Guild (a union) that requires what is called scale pay, but for credited actors. So to avoid having to pay Bruce Willis, and other such actors, a large amount of money that would be required, he does not get screen credit and can accept less (or even nothing) as a favor to someone.

Question: What kind of aircraft are Rusty and Isabel in at the end of the movie? It kind of looks like a Global Express.

Mike Boyer

Chosen answer: Gulfstream G5.

Question: The lasers in the Great Hall of the building where the egg is stored are moving around. How can they reflect back from anything (like a mirror) and know if someone is blocking the beam, and make the alarm go off?

Chosen answer: This was already dealt with in the mistakes. Essentially the laser would need another point at the end if it was to alert the guards.

Question: Why did Ocean's gang need to go to the museum if they already had the egg?

Chosen answer: Toulour would get suspicious if the gang didn't make any attempt at stealing the egg so in order to keep him distracted, they tried to steal the fake egg.

Question: How did Benedict have time to visit all of Ocean's 11 without them informing each other? (That is, only Danny should have been surprised to see Benedict.) He had to travel to Connecticut, Utah, Miami, London, New Jersey, Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. As soon as Danny knew, he was on the phone (presumably calling the others).

Chosen answer: He probably warned all of them not to contact any of the others or there will be consequences. They all seemed very scared when they met with him, so they all didn't dare to. Except for Danny, who probably did not get warned.

Question: How does Linus' mother know to get them out of prison?

Chosen answer: The whole thing was planned from the beginning. That is how she knows.

Question: Why would it matter if Night Fox didn't think they were making any attempts to steal the egg from the museum?

Chosen answer: If the Night Fox didn't think they were trying to steal it, he would be questioning why. They had to make the more public attempt because otherwise he would start digging into their recent activities to find out if they already had.

Greg Dwyer

Question: If Isabel is such a good detective, why did she not question more why Rusty stole the paintings from the random Frenchman? She should have been able to put two and two together and realized that the random Frenchman is The Night Fox.

Chosen answer: Why should Isabel think he is the Night Fox? She knows Rusty and his friends are thieves so she would suspect that they stole them for that reason.

Question: What was the point of putting Yen in a bag with a men's soccer team?

Chosen answer: The bag with Yen in it got mixed up at the hotel. It was designed to sneak him in without anyone knowing he was there, but it backfired.

SexyIrishLeprechaun

Question: Why did Ocean's team leave the drill behind at Van der Woude's house? Was it to tip Isabel off about the Night Fox's involvement in the stealing of the document?

Chosen answer: Isabel was going to find out they had been there anyway. There was no reason to hide their tracks by taking the drill back with them. The drill was going to be left behind anyway, it didn't have any purpose anymore.

Question: Who is responsible for taking pictures of Brad Pitt's character in Amsterdam while he is following Catherine Zeta Jones' character? Is it Toulour?

Chosen answer: More likely, it was simply a detective that Jones' character set on Brad Pitt; she knew he was there and knew he was tailing her.

Question: In the scene where they are discussing the amount of interest owed, at the end Rusty says to Frank, "Don't tell Danny." Explain please.

shortdanzr

Chosen answer: They were just discussing going to Amsterdam. In the flashback you see Rusty living with Zeta-Jones, and running away when she was getting close to arresting him. Frank knows about Rusty's history with Zeta-Jones (indeed, Frank was Rusty's partner on the Rome Bulgari's robbery). Zeta-Jones told Rusty she would like to go live in Amsterdam where she has relatives. Frank knows it is dangerous for the pair of them to go back to Amsterdam where probably Zeta-Jones is (Zeta-Jones wastes little time arresting Frank at a nail-salon).

Soylent Purple

New this month Answer: Also, in the scene where Rusty and Isabel first see each other, it is Frank sitting at the table with Rusty. So it's safe to say he was well aware of the relationship from the beginning.

Question: In the scene near the end of the movie, when Isabel confronts Rusty at the airplane and he tells her that her father is still alive, He also says "There's nothing back there but a forged 1077." How does he know she forged it? Even if we can assume they were bluffing when Linus' mother showed up at the prison indicating an irregularity with the paperwork (as previously contributed by another viewer), that doesn't explain how Rusty knew it was forged.

Chosen answer: Because he knows her and what lengths she would go to. He also could have gotten inside information.

Question: Can anyone make out what Tess whispers to Danny after Toulour makes them tell him that he is the best? I can only hear very little but I can tell that she is actually saying something.

Chosen answer: Tess says to Danny, "Get him to tell us how he did it and then tell him he's the best. I'm not going to tell him he's the best because I think you're the best."

Tina Gilliam

Question: Why does Terry Benedict call Rusty by the name of Robert Charles Ryan, is that his real name? Or who is this Robert Charles Ryan?

Chosen answer: Yes, that is his real name. Rusty is just a nickname or short for his whole name.

Toolio

Question: Can someone please explain the big twist at the end of the film?

Chosen answer: Clooney and the gang actually stole the Faberge Egg before Francois Tolour. Clooney and Pitt went to see the thief La Marque who informed them the egg in the heavily secured truck was actually a fake. The real egg was the one on the train with the very low security. In exchange for the information, they must give La Marque the egg (as he had put it back many years ago when he tried to steal it because his wife told him to put it back) and his long lost daughter (Catherine Zeta Jones). In regards to Tolour he stole a fake egg despite the amazing burglary, and at the end we see him in disguise probably trying to steal the money back he lost in the bet.

Mistakes

The scene where Nightfox steals the Faberge Egg is all wrong. A laser security system must have a photoelectric receptor at the other side to detect if somebody pass between the two devices. As shown in the film, the laser beams points everywhere, so the system can't work and somebody could cross a beam without starting the alarm. Even if it was some weird system based on measuring distance it wouldn't work - if the laser hits the floor at an angle it won't bounce back to the source, it will reflect towards the ceiling.

Trivia

The scene shot in Amsterdam Central Station was actually shot at the Haarlem train station. Dutch Railway officials didn't allow the interference of trains schedules on such a crowded station, since they're fined by the Dutch government for every delay. Haarlem is much quieter a station and just as beautiful a location. Also the Europol headquarters are in fact the Hague's City Hall.
