Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

Revealing mistake: When the Falcon leaves Hoth and is being chased by the Empire, there is a scene where the ship gets rocked about. During the 'impact', C-3PO's arm becomes dislodged, and you can clearly see human skin underneath.

Revealing mistake: When Captain Needa is killed by Darth Vader because they lost track of the Millennium Falcon, in the background, two guards come to take him away. You can clearly see the dead captain get up almost by himself.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: When the Falcon gets hit by an asteroid, Leia falls and is caught by Han. She tells him that "being held by you isn't quite enough to get me excited". As she is saying this you can clearly see Harrison Ford mouthing her exact words.

Revealing mistake: During the attack on the rebel base, after the headless AT-AT falls on the ground, another one shoots at the rebels. You can see the pyrotechnic charges where the impacts are.

Revealing mistake: When Leia and the crew return to cloud city to rescue Luke from the scaffolding, watch very closely as Lando ascends up the lift, just after the top hatch opens from the overhead angle, you will see that Lando has been replaced with a G.I. Joe look-alike figurine.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: When Leia and Lando are holding off the stormtroopers while Chewbacca and the droids escape into the Millennium Falcon, a stormtrooper comes running through the doorway. You can see the burn mark on his armour before Lando shoots him. When the trooper is shot, another trooper comes running through the door, also with a burn mark on his armour. Then Leia shoots another (or perhaps the same) trooper, and the burn mark is once again there before the trooper is hit (watch in slow motion).

Revealing mistake: Right before Luke nicks Vader in the shoulder with his lightsabre, Vader cuts through a railing. There's a hole in the railing exactly where Vader apparently cuts it. Also, if you play it in slow motion, Vader's lightsabre never comes into contact with the railing, yet it sparks.

Revealing mistake: When Luke and Vader are fighting in Cloud City, there is something looking like tape wherever they hit something with their lightsabers. Maybe it's pyrotechnic charges?

Revealing mistake: After Chewbacca pulls R2-D2 away from the power socket, he runs away, and you can see white rubber soles under his feet.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: After the headless AT-AT begins to fall over, watch its back leg on the right side of the screen. You can see a broomstick being pushed up from under the set. It raises that foot up in order to ensure that the AT-AT falls to the left side of the screen.

Revealing mistake: In Cloud City, Lando, Leia and Chewbacca are running to the Millennium Falcon, and when then they run into a door after Leia shoots a stormtrooper, a white rubber sole can be seen under one of Chewie's feet.

Revealing mistake: When Darth Vader meet Luke in the Cloud city, you can see the stick used to make the special effects before Vader starts his lightsaber.

Revealing mistake: In the original (not Special Edition): When the AT-ATs are attacking the Hoth base, they do a camera angle from inside Luke's cockpit. As his snowspeeder is passing through the legs of an AT-AT, part of the cockpit becomes translucent and you can slightly see the AT-AT through a metal bar.

Revealing mistake: In the first shot of Luke riding on Hoth, the tauntaun leaves no tracks in the snow.

Revealing mistake: After Luke's hand is cut off, he squeezes his forearm under his left armpit, and in the first shot of him clutching a pole, the knuckles of Mark Hamill's hand can be seen through his shirt, under his left arm.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: When the medical droid tests Luke's mechanical hand at the end of the film, his thumb moves before the "muscle."

Dr Wilson

Revealing mistake: After C-3PO gets shot, as Chewbacca walks over to the door, his right foot crushes one of the steps on a small set of stairs.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: Just before Darth Vader reveals his true identity, Luke yells, "I'll never join you." and his right hand, the one that got cut off, can be seen tucked under his shirt. This can also be seen when he says, "He told me you killed him."

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: When Luke is talking to Han over the comlink, there's a shot of Han riding a tauntaun. The animal leaves no tracks in the snow.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: Vader cuts off Luke's hand at the wrist. When Luke is holding on to the antennae-like assembly underneath Cloud City, in one shot, Mark Hamill bends his wrist, revealing the gimmick.

Revealing mistake: Spaceships are partially transparent on occasion. An example: when the two Star Destroyers collide towards the end, one is visible through the other.

Dr Wilson

Revealing mistake: During the escape from Cloud City, watch as C-3PO's head strikes a lamp on the hull of the Millennium Falcon. It bends out of shape.

Add time

Revealing mistake: Right after Luke and Darth fight for the first time, Darth gets kicked off of the Carbonite freezer. Then Luke jumps down to fight him again. After he jumps, you hear what sounds suspiciously like a trampoline. Then in the lower right screen you can see Mark Hamill's head pop back up into frame. Widescreen only, although the sound is audible on the 4:3 version too.

Add time

Revealing mistake: During the battle on Hoth, after Luke says: "Hobbie, you're still with me?", there's a shot of an AT-ST shooting at the rebel and after that, there a shot of an explosion behind them. You can see that the rebels are actually dummies in that shot.

Revealing mistake: When Luke quits Hoth, the planet is actually painted on a glass sheet but the problem is that you can see a line joining two sheets.

Revealing mistake: When Yoda is training Luke by having him do a handstand and stack some rocks, watch closely during the close-up of one of the rocks. You can see a string holding it in the air.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: When the Millennium Falcon is being pursued by the Star Destroyers after leaving Hoth, for a few seconds you can see the light of the ship through one of the Star Destroyers as the Falcon flies in front of it in the second shot.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: Look carefully at the end of the cavern where the Millenium Falcon enters the giant asteroid. It's a dark blue circle, because the light is dim. But there is a little white circle on the right and the two circles are much brighter on the left side. It's because it's an image of a planet with a moon.

Revealing mistake: If you closely when Vader cuts through the three poles at the end of the lightsabre duel, you can see that the sabre never actually goes through the poles. Play it in slow motion for confirmation.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: When we see the Star Destroyer for the first time, there are three of them on screen. The one on the top left, can still be seen even after another Star Destroyer came into frame and blocks the view.

Add time

Revealing mistake: If you look closely when Vader cuts off Luke's hand, you can see that Vader's lightsabre never actually cuts through Luke's wrist, but passes in front of his hand.

Revealing mistake: When the Millenium Falcon fakes hitting the Star Destroyer, half of the sky is gray and the other half is black.

Revealing mistake: When Luke runs into Vader again after being sucked out the window, as they are fighting in the control room, watch closely: Vader's lightsabre hits the wall a couple of times, but the explosions are not where the sabre touches the wall.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: Before Lando warns the people of Cloud City that the Empire has taken control of the city, Leia shoots a stormtrooper. The burn mark can be seen on the troopers armour before the laser beam hits him.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: After Luke escapes from the snow monster, he collapses, and there's a shot of Han riding. When the camera pans down, there are no tracks in the snow where the tauntaun just ran.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: When the stormtroopers are firing at Chewie and the droids and C3PO is yelling at R2D2 about the Millennium Falcon's hyper-drive, there is a shot of Chewie being shot at and the beam putting a hole in the wall. In one shot, it doesn't look much bigger than a pinpoint, but in the next shot, the team at Industrial Lights and Magic were kind enough to add a CGI burn mark, which contracts, almost disappears, and then warps as smoke passes in front of it, wrecking the illusion.

Trivia

The Special Edition covers of Return of the Jedi and Empire Strikes Back are wrong. The picture of the Emperor on ESB cover is from 'ROTJ', and the lightsaber duel between Luke and Vader on the cover of ROTJ is taken from 'ESB' (notice Luke is in his fighter pilot suit, and Vader is fighting him one-handed)
