Corrected entry: In the scene where John McClane and Zeus are climbing down the steel cable from the bridge to the cargo ship, the steel cable runs out and as it does the truck is pulled to the edge of the bridge. You can see the pulley system used to pull the truck sideways.

scubaru

Correction: That's not the pulley system for pulling the truck sideways. It's the cable that McClane & Zeus are hanging from that is attached to the truck. It runs out of cable & starts pulling the truck sideways towards the edge of the bridge.

Corrected entry: During the Federal Reserve scenes, the driller machine cuts a hole in the wall into one of the gold deposits. In one scene, the gold is stacked at the same level. When we see the room on the television screen, there are 2 different height levels of gold in the room.

Correction: We see different sections. The first shot of the gold we see is the French Republic. The second shot (on the monitor) only shows part of the gold stacks, so they look even, but the view is cut off shortly above the doorknob. The 3rd shot on the monitor shows the whole section, and we see different levels of gold stacks, which are exactly the same stacks seen when it cuts to the camera view of it (as opposed to the monitor view).

Bishop73

Corrected entry: When McClane first pulls truck driver Jerry over, he sneaks a peak through the cover on the top of the truck. During the next overhead shots entering the aqueduct and whilst in the aqueduct, Jerry's truck cover is missing and the truck is empty.

Correction: Jerry's truck never has a cover and McClane never "sneaks a peek" under anything. Jerry's truck has red wood panelling on the side and McClane looks over this, you can even see his hand his holding onto the wood, and there's no cover to begin with.

Bishop73

Corrected entry: After the scene in the park with the jugs, McClane and Zeus climb over the fence. If you look at the fence you can see that the part of the fence they climb over has an extra bar on top to make it easier to climb over for the actors.

Lightrock

Correction: There is no "extra" bar. This is just how the fence is designed. The whole fence is that way, not just one section.

Bishop73

Corrected entry: Dick Cheney makes a cameo as an NYPD police official.

Cubs Fan

Correction: That is not Dick Cheney. Although the director said it was in an interview, it was later revealed he misspoke and that was not Mr. Cheney. Here is a copy of a trivia entry on IMDB regarding this: On the DVD commentary Director John McTiernan mentions that Dick Cheney appears in a scene. He actually says "here he is", but Dick Cheney is not in the film - the person shown in the scene has a slight physical resemblance but is not Dick Cheney. The director made an error.

Corrected entry: Throughout the film Inspector Walter Cobb is as you would expect referred to as Walter. But in the end credits he is listed as Arthur Cobb.

Correction: His full name is "Arthur Walter Cobb." People refer to Cobb alternately by "Arthur" and by "Walter", depending on which form they are more comfortable with.

dmcreif

Corrected entry: During the bridge scene, when Willis and Jackson jump down to the passing ship, check out the background landscape - it is marshy with NO evidence of ANY tall buildings. Since this movie was supposed to take place in NYC, there should be a building somewhere. That scene was shot in Charleston, South Carolina; they chose SC because there are two suspension bridges right next to one another. Action can occur on one bridge, while they film it from the other bridge.

Correction: There are many areas of the New Jersey shore that look just like that, and we are not told which bridge, so it's probable for it to be one of the many bridges in New Jersey.

Corrected entry: When the No. 3 train is arriving at Wall Street, we see that that the head car is slowing, about to stop at the end of the platform. However, when McClane shatters the storm door window at the rear of the train to eject the bomb, we see the train is still moving at speed through a local station. This is because the train interior footage with McClane was shot on the actual subway here in New York, while the exterior shots were filmed on the set in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Correction: The scene where the train is travelling into wall street was filmed in the States. The scene where the train pulled into the platform was actually filmed in London.

Corrected entry: The German version is strange, because the English is dubbed, but the German (obviously) isn't. However, this means that when they're on the boat, and the guard shouts "nicht schie├čen" [don't shoot], Willis asks "was hat er gesagt?" [what did he say], and is answered "nicht schie├čen". Bizarre....

Correction: The guy spoke Russian, not German. The gangsters were from former East Germany and had some Russians amongst them.

Corrected entry: In the scene when Simon asks Inspector Cobb to have McClane come to Harlem on the phone, he just mentions the address/location and the Inspector hangs up the phone. There are no further instructions given, as to what McClane has to "do" at Harlem (which McClane does in the subsequent scenes).

shganesa

Correction: The camera comes in close to Cobb's eyes as Simon speaks. His eyes react after Simon has mentioned Harlem, then we hear Cobb shout out "Kowalski" to the bullpen. The next cut is from further back, where we see Cobb hanging up the phone and barking instructions to his men. There are two very common cinematic techniques being used in the phone call sequence. The first is a timecut. When Cobb answers Simon's call and then when he hangs up the phone are actually two different scenes that occur probably several minutes apart. The second technique is prelapped dialogue, which is when dialogue from a later scene is heard over the previous scene. So when Cobb shouts "Kowalski," it's not actually occuring during the closeup to his eyes, but in the second scene timejumped a few minutes later. Simon gave further details during the intervening (offscreen) minutes between the two scenes.

JC Fernandez

Corrected entry: In the North of the Border scene when McClane shoots at the wires to the North of the Border neon sign, one of the two wires falls and takes out the chopper. McClane then walks back to his downed chopper, looks back at the North of the Border sign, and you see two wires going to the sign.

Correction: If you look closely at one of the shots just before Willis shoots the wires (1:59:58), you can see that there are 3 wires going to the sign, not 2.

Corrected entry: The gold storage in the Federal Reserve Bank is actually below the subway tunnels. So the bad guys wouldn't be able to steal the gold the way they do in the movie.

Correction: Yes we do see that the level of the gold storage is below the subway level. But the 'bad guys' came with a huge ramp to gain access from the ground level to the train platform level below. It is not beyond belief that they have another smaller ramps for other split level transfers. Obviously the operation was planned carefully and they came fully prepared. Just because we don't see how they transfer the gold from the storage to the trucks, it doesn't mean it is impossible.

XIII

Corrected entry: When John ambushes the two men in the truck in the tunnel, only three shots are heard, yet there are nine bullet holes in the door.

xx:xx:xx

barryween23

Correction: On my DVD copy, I hear 9 shots which is followed by the sound of empty gun clip.

XIII

Corrected entry: When McClane is looking for the bomb in the subway, a woman screams because she thought he was looking up her dress. However, when the subway car is derailing, the same woman is watching the car derail.

Correction: The blond haired lady who screams in the train carriage is wearing a bright yellow jacket, yellow dress, is wearing glasses and has her hair pinned (no ribbon). There is no-one matching that description waiting on the platform. There is a blond lady but she has no jacket, no glasses and her hair is tied with a a blue ribbon. Similar dress, that's about it. Even with different costume, there is no way you could distinguish that its the same person (even with slow-mo or pause which is against the 'movie mistake' rules anyway).

XIII

Corrected entry: When McClane and Zeus jump into the water as the ship explodes, the underwater shots show two white men, not one white and one black.

Correction: That's quite a bit of a stretch to say both men are distinguishable to be 'white'. The scene is quite dark and contains flashes from the explosion. In fact for a moment or two, both men appear to be 'dark'. We'll have to put this down to color and contrast of the scene.

XIII

Corrected entry: As John and Zeus are running to the park for the second bomb they are talking about the incident from the first film, John says that he threw Simon's "little" brother out of a window, yet when John was talking to the FBI agents they did not mention whether Simon was older or younger then Hans.

barryween23

Correction: And who says that he is or is not. John was just making an assumption, probably based on his perception of the older brother being protective of the younger. The ages were not relevant, and we don't know anyway, so it can't be a mistake.

XIII

Corrected entry: When John and Zeus are being chased by the German guys in the car, John asks Zeus to pull out all the fuses in the fuse-box. The next shot is a quick shot of the speedometer etc. and it is lit up. Surely if all the fuses were out it wouldn't be lit?

Correction: No, the car would interpret missing fuses as blown fuses and would display a light to highlight the error.

GalahadFairlight

Corrected entry: Simon's henchmen blow up the dam with a suitcase bomb. Although the tunnel would make a superb conductor to carry sound waves, Bruce Willis and the audience hear nothing of the explosion.

xx:xx:xx

Christoph Galuschka

Correction: Actually we do hear the explosion. At the same moment McLean closes the truck door, we hear a muffled explosion which McLean reacts to as if the door made that noise.

XIII

Corrected entry: The explosive the bad guys have chosen is not easily 'booby-trapped'. The two chemicals have to be mixed to produce an explosive. The fact that no one, including McClane, (who knows this) thinks to just clip one of the hoses and prevent the chemicals from mixing seems a little far-fetched.

Correction: The bombs also had dummy mechanisms to foil anyone tampering with them, no-one was prepared to step in and clamp a hose on the off chance that it might trigger a secondary explosive.

GalahadFairlight

Corrected entry: How would McClane know that there were bad guys in the truck (in the aquaduct) when he shot through the door? Granted he had his hunch and whatnot, and the guys really WERE German baddies, but how could McClane have been sure? What if he'd shot two innocent bystanders?

redbaron2000

Correction: Because earlier on, the foreman for the aqueduct said that no one is working down the tunnel. It's also obvious because McClain saw the trucks design used in the heist previously.

Corrected entry: In the park, McClane and Zeus are challenged to fill one 5-gallon jug with only 4 gallons of water, using it and a 3-gallon jug. When they solve the problem, they put the 5-gallon jug with, supposedly, 4 gallons of water in it on the scale to deactivate the bomb; however, the 5-gallon jug, on the scale, is filled only halfway, no where close to where the 4-gallon mark should be.

Correction: If you look closely at the jugs, the design makes them difficult to measure. The inverted handle might deceive how much was there. Don't rule out as well that Simon might have purposely made the bomb to defuse even if the jug was a little off. The likelihood of getting exactly 4 gallons and not an ounce of more over or under was going to be near impossible. The fact he enjoyed running McClane all over town showed he wanted to enjoy watching him suffer.

Lummie

Corrected entry: The bomb on the train has to blow up, and Bruce Willis is not supposed to find it. But he does and throws it out the back of the train just before it blows up. But the bad guy didn't expect this, he expected in to blow up in the train. In which case hundreds of people would have been killed, injured and trapped. It would take the rest of the day to clear that mess - making it impossible for them to raid the bank. Pretty crap plan - I guess he got lucky?

Correction: This is all part of the plan. The commotion would allow him to more easilly go through with his plan, as most of the attention would be focused on the train wreck. McClane actually just made it harder to go through with it, but this is still not a mistake.

Corrected entry: In the scene where McClane and Zeus are arguing by the fountain, McClane is slamming his near-empty water jug around as he berates his 'new best friend'. Moments later his container is seen to be almost full, with exactly two gallons of water.

Correction: There are some scenes in between these two scenes, and more than 'a few moments' passes. It's clear that they had been experimenting with the water jugs in the intervening time.

wizard_of_gore

Corrected entry: When the two officers go to rescue the kids that are stuck in the classroom they for some reason try and escape by going to the roof. However you see that there is a good solid two minutes and fifteen seconds left before the so called bomb is going to go off. Why wouldn't they just go out the front doors?

Correction: They didn't know how long they had to get out. They were nowhere near the bomb.

Corrected entry: 'Simon' needs McClane alive until the very end, when he has secured the gold. Diverting the police by making them think he is merely avenging his dead brother is a vital part of his plan. It therefore makes no sense at all that his very first task for McClane - wearing a grotesquely racist sandwich board as he walks through Harlem - could very easily get him killed.

Correction: "Simon" does not necessarily NEED McClane alive to complete the heist. In fact, everything he plans later for him to do is "just in case" he survives the previous task. McClane being dead will have NO EFFECT on Simon's plan, as once the police were diverted, his plan merely consisted of robbing the Federal Reserve.

Jazetopher

Corrected entry: After the subway explosion and the dump trucks are coming on the scene and the cop (who later gets killed) is waving them through. One of the lead terrorists is riding on the side of the truck. A few scenes earlier the same cop is in the van with McClane and the FBI agents looking at snapshots, and the same terrorist is shown, trademark square sunglasses and all. Some detective...

Correction: Even though he was in the van when the photos of both terrorists were being shown, they were exclusively shown to John and Zeus. He was in the back of the van, and likely did not look at them closely, if at all, since they were not meant for him anyway.

Jazetopher

Corrected entry: Right after the train station explosion McClane is sitting down and talking to Zeus and Det. Lambert. McClane says "What were the odds of us making it down there on time?" which is replied by Zeus as "Zip". Zeus got to the phone at the train station on time, with time to spare. If McClane would have continued in the cab with him they would both have gotten there in time.

Correction: McLane is simply stating that Simon set up a task that he believed to be impossible with no chance for success, as he needed the train to blow up underneath Wall Street for his plan. He never expected they would make it. Just as planned in the plot, Simon underestimated McLane and Zeus, which ultimately leads to Simon's demise.

Jazetopher

Corrected entry: When John is getting on the train and busts the window out, his pants are relatively clean and have no holes or tears. After he pulls the bomb off the wall and starts to walk away, his pants have a good size hole above each knee.

Correction: He rips them on the broken glass of the subway train's window as he quickly jumps through.

Jazetopher

Corrected entry: The Germans say they are going to blow up the gold in the Long Island Sound, but they take the trucks up the aqueduct, which is on the other side of Manhattan on the Hudson River. They did not have enough time to go on the aqueduct and another bridge and end up on the Long Island Sound.

Correction: But they did not put the gold on the boat, so this is not a mistake. No one is tracking their movements except McClane, and he loses the gold after being flushed out of the aqueduct.

Corrected entry: When the truck hits the water the rope breaks and cuts one of the bad guys in half. Again, if you play it at slow motion, you can see that the guy has a rope tied to his back. (It's one of those machines that are used in the movies to pull something or someone back really fast.) You see the rope for about 1 second. After that it is erased.

Correction: If you have to use slow motion to see this, it is not valid as a movie mistake.

Twotall

Corrected entry: When Samuel L. Jackson slams on the brakes and gets out of the cab on Wall Street to catch the phone call from Jeremy Irons, you can see various tyre marks that were caused by previous takes.

Correction: This kind of "mistake" has been posted and corrected for a number of films. The car is on a busy road which is marked by skidmarks. Why do that have to be "from previous takes"?

Corrected entry: In the scene where everyone is talking to Simon for the first time in the police station, the psychiatrist says that Simon was giving clues to his identity, and that one of those clues was his speaking in German. Simon never spoke in German during that conversation.

Correction: Simon speaks German in his first line on the telephone in that scene.

Soylent Purple

Corrected entry: At the very end of the film beside the Nord des Lignes truckstop, John McLane makes a phone call on the Canadian payphone. However he has only collected American quarters from the German drivers and hence wouldn't have any Canadian Currency.

Correction: Canadian quarters and American ones both work in the same machines.

Corrected entry: In the scene where Bruce Willis kills the two bad guys in the truck in the aqueduct, he is walking towards the truck from behind left. When he shoots, he is still behind left of the truck. Then the camera changes and you see the blood spraying out of the bad guys torso. How could Bruce Willis be able to hit the torso of those guys if he was left behind the truck? It would have been okay if he had shot them from the front. That he was able to hit the guy sitting on the right side is really amazing.

Correction: We don't actually see McClane when he is shooting the "bad guys". He could have been standing perpendicular to the door, OR simply holding his gun with his arms extended out in front of him. So when he shoots throught the door he hits both of them. He then would have had to take a couple steps back to open the door.

XIII

Corrected entry: In the scene where the green Dodge falls off of the bridge, you can use slow-motion play to see extra explosives go off causing a huge splash. This happens before the Dodge actually hits the water.

Correction: That splash was from the guard rail that the truck ripped apart.

Toolio

Corrected entry: After Zeus and McClane escape the boat, Zeus asks Lambert to give McClane a quarter to go call his wife. However in the very last scene of the movie Zeus hands McClane a quarter to go call his wife. How on earth did he get that quarter? He obviously didn't have one the first time so why does he suddenly have a quarter now? Not like it would have mattered anyway, considering you don't need any money to make a collect call.

Correction: The last scene takes place several hours after the boat blows up. Plenty of time to make change, or for that matter, find a quarter. It just would not be very interesting to slow the action down to watch Zeus buy a pack of chewing gum.

Twotall

Corrected entry: When Bruce Willis pokes holes in the big bomb on the ship with the iron bar, you can see the liquid streaming out of one of the holes even after the liquid level inside the cylinder goes below the level of the hole.

Correction: The color of one of the chemicals is white, making it very hard to tell wheather or not there is any left. I cannot find the shot this mistake mentions.

Corrected entry: When McClane and Zeus are climbing down the cable towards the ship, if you notice in one shot they are wearing gloves and in another shot they are not.

Correction: Zeus is the only one wearing gloves and he is wearing them throughout the scene. McClane is using an old shirt to protect one hand while another one has neither a glove nor a shirt.

Toolio

Corrected entry: When dealing with the binary liquid bombs you always see two equal volume containers with both containers completely full. As stated near the beginning of the movie the red liquid pumps into the clear in order to mix. If both tanks are full, how is there any volume left to pump in the other chemical in order to mix it? At least one of the tanks would need to be half full in order for there to be room to pump in the second chemical.

Correction: Both containers mixed equally, so the same amount of liquid that was going into the container was leaving the container, making the mixing process possible.

BillyBlake

Corrected entry: Since Ricky was the one who read the report on the 14 great big dump trucks stolen from Statton Island, wouldn't he have noticed the 14 great big dump trucks that drove by him when "Bob Thompson" showed up?

Correction: Why should he? There must be hundreds of dump trucks in New York City, and there was no reason for him to suspect that these were the stolen ones. After all, there had just been a severe terrorist act and a lot of rubble to be cleared, so when a city official turned up with trucks and workers it seemed like everything was OK. And how many people count the number of trucks in a column?

Twotall

Corrected entry: When Ricky and the two officers are leading the terrorists down into the subway, we see two of the terrorists tranquilize the officers. The shot then cuts to Ricky, who notices the downed officers and is shot. As soon as the shot cuts to Otto and the other terrorist shouting, the two who tranquilized the guards are in full police uniform. I wish I could get dressed in five seconds...

Correction: As Ricky is being shot, the two terrorists unzip their coveralls to reveal police uniforms underneath. You can see it happening in the corner of the screen on Widescreen.

Corrected entry: In the scene with the truck coming off the bridge, the cable cuts the terrorist from head to toe. However, Mclane and Zeus drag a body that was cut in half at the waist.

Correction: Watch the cutting scene closely (slow motion can help) - the terrorist's body is cut through at the waist.

Tailkinker

Corrected entry: Det. Lambert found the report saying that the chemical used in the bombs was stolen from a lab over the weekend, and that about 2000 pounds was stolen. But not only did we learn from Simon that there was 2400 pounds of the chemicals being used in the school bomb, but add that to the amounts used in the smaller more local bombs and the fairly large amount used on the boat and I'd say that around 2000 is a bit understated. The fact that the school bomb apparently contained more explosive than was stolen should have given them a bit of a clue...

Correction: The NYPD wouldn't assume the school bomb was fake just because there was more explosive than was stolen. They don't know that the stolen explosive is ALL the terrorists have. They couldn't take the chance. Also, none of them knew about the bomb on the boat.

Corrected entry: When Bruce Willis shoots the men in the elevator, he gets blood all over his right ear and cheek, and then when he falls out of the elevator and gets up to talk to Zeus it is all gone.

Correction: You see Bruce Willis washing the blood off.

Corrected entry: When the scene switches you see a young German guy talking to that big guy (the terrorist.) If you listen carefully, you can actually hear that some things they say are in Russian.

Correction: The Germans are probably from former East Germany (as shown earlier on a picture), so having a Russian in their crew would make sense.

Corrected entry: When Zeus begrudgingly accompanies McClane to their first riddle site at the pay phone (where the terrorist tricks them into thinking there is a bomb in the trash can), an extra walks past them going towards the street corner. Seconds later when the camera angle switches, the same extra walks towards the camera again going the other way.

Correction: Are you saying you've never started off in one direction then pivoted when you remembered something or caught yourself walking the wrong way? I wish I were that coordinated....

Corrected entry: The scene where the cops go into Chester A. Arther School, Lambert introduces Principal Martinez to 'Inspector Carver'. The character's name is Cobb.

Correction: Cobb is a different character.

Corrected entry: Jeremy Irons mentions that he is not a monster, and he goes out of his way to kill as few people as possible throughout the entire movie. Blowing up an entire subway car seems fairly extreme given his non lethal tendencies elsewhere.

Correction: He says he is not a monster because he doesn't kill children, which he doesn't. True, there may have been children in the train, but he needs that to explode, and it is not a 'typical' place to find children, as they should be in school.

Corrected entry: The Beretta 92F has never been an issue weapon with the NYPD and all officers are required to carry issue weapons, even maverick detectives.

Correction: Actually, the Beretta 92f is a handgun that was issued to only the elite emergency services units throughout all 5 boroughs of New York City in the late 80's and ended in the early 90's with the arrival of the Glock 19's.

Corrected entry: If the bomb needs the two chemicals to mix, why not just drill a hole and drain one?

Correction: Trying to drain one of the explosive liquids would be disastrous. As the explosives expert demostrated, it only takes a tiny smear of the two liquids to come in contact with each other. In the short time they had, it would be impossible to drain one of the liquids 100% completely dry. Once they drained the liquid, the other would mix, and the smaller explosion would set off the drained liquid. Also, they wouldn't be able to know if the bomber had set up a switch to set it to go off in this situation. This would NOT be a viable option used by a bomb squad.

Mistakes

When McClane and Zeus take the little hatchback from the bank location, they run up the ramp by the Brooklyn Bridge and McClane looks to see the dump trucks aren't on the bridge. Zeus then spots them on FDR Drive and they speed off down the ramp to FDR Drive. The ramp they were on doesn't connect to the ramp they took to give chase. It only heads towards City Hall then over the bridge. They'd have to cross the bridge, do a u-turn in Brooklyn then come back across to Manhattan.

Trivia

Someone asked: Has anyone EVER figured out the math to that damn water-in-a-bottle-diffuse-the-bomb riddle? I actually have, in case anyone's wondering about it. If I remember right, they've got a 5, a 3, and they need 4. Fill the five, tip it into the 3, leaving 2. Empty out the three, and put the 2 in it. Then fill the five, and use that jug to fill up the remainder of the 3, which will leave 4 in the 5 gallon jug. Another possible way to do this: You fill up the 3 and tip these three gallons into the 5. Then you fill up the 3 and use this to fill up the 5. This leaves you with one in the 3 and five in the 5. Then you empty the 5 and tip the one from the 3 over, then fill up the 3. Then you've got three in the 3 and one in the 5. After you've tipped over the three this will leave you with four in the 5.
