Factual error: Lots of liberties are taken with the geography of downtown Portland. For example, at one point Bonham is standing on a fountain looking around and, from his point of view, you see two MAX trains on a slope going past a parking lot. Those two points are about a mile apart and there is definitely not line of sight between them because most of downtown Portland is in the way.
Revealing mistake: When the "light rail" vehicle is crossing the bridge, several shots reveal that it is not traveling on rails, but on a metal grating. This is most obvious after the police have stopped it. We see a bridge deck designed to carry cars & trucks (in fact, the police have just driven out on it) with strips of metal laid on the surface to simulate "rails". As others have observed, this was filmed on the wrong bridge; this makes it particularly obvious.
Continuity mistake: Near the end, when Tommy Lee Jones is hanging upside-down over the raging river, he pulls the wooden stake out of his leg. Blood starts gushing out and it leaves a pretty big hole in his thigh. Yet during his end fight with Del Toro, there is no marks on either thigh.
Continuity mistake: When Bonham follows Hallam down the river he is seen walking on the right bank. In the next shot he is walking on the left bank. (One could assume that he is going back and forth, but that would be very counterproductive on the hunt for someone who is swimming down a fast-flowing river).
Revealing mistake: In the shot where Jones is caught in a snare and is falling through the air towards the water, he comes to an unnatural stop at the end of his fall. He should have jerked when he came to the end of the rope. Instead, he came to a smooth, controlled stop with no jerking or bouncing. The stunt man was probably lowered with a crane.
Revealing mistake: Towards the beginning of the movie, there are several shots of winter wilderness, one with a soaring eagle. If you look closely, you see that this particular eagle has tethers hanging off of its feet. This was not a bird found in nature. This was a trained bird brought in for this shot.
Other mistake: When Bonham starts his search for Hallam in the forest we see him crawling along with his face and shirt nice and clean. From one shot to the next his face is covered with movie dirt, and his shirt looks as if he hadn't changed it in at least a year. Fresh dirt looks different.
Plot hole: In one of the scenes where Jones and Del Toro are fighting hand to hand, Del Toro's knife is knocked into the bushes. They continue to fight until a point where Del Toro has gained the upper hand. Del Toro is on top of Jones, who is almost unconscious. Instead of finishing Jones off, Del Toro looks around for his knife. This doesn't make sense. Del Toro is a trained killer. He doesn't need a knife to kill Jones.
Plot hole: Near the start of the film Tommy Lee Jones tracks a wounded wolf through the woods and removes a snare from its leg. The problem with this is there is no way he could have just walked up to a wild animal start touching it without it attacking. Plus this is a wounded animal which as anyone who deals with animals can tell you makes them twice as dangerous.
Continuity mistake: When Hallam hides behind a Budget truck Bonham loses him for a moment. He stands there looking around, and while he does that he gets transferred from a completely built-up area to a park where he can spot tracks in the lawn (somehow identifiable as Hallam's).
Other mistake: On the final hunt, both Bonham and Hallam sit down and produce knives in a very diligent manner, Bonham from a flintstone, and Hallam from a piece of scrap metal in a complete forging procedure. Given the time pressure both opponents are under, this display of stone- resp. iron-age skills (a.k.a. survival skills) is a bit absurd and almost touching.
Continuity mistake: When the FBI agent tries to persuade Bonham to help with the deer hunter case he puts some material in a briefcase on the table in front of him. Bonham refuses and pushes the briefcase back, the agent insists and puts it in front of Bonham again, but a wider shot shows it still lying right in front of the agent.
Continuity mistake: Shortly before Hallam leaves the basement he is seen running along in a black shirt and without a helmet, with Bonham on his heels. From one shot to the next he is wearing a thick brown jacket and a red helmet, not anything he would put on running along to facilitate his escape.
Continuity mistake: When Benicio Del Toro is questioned by the lady after he was caught for the first time, she is sitting at the right from him. The next shot she's sitting at the left. It can't be a reflection issue - both times we see Abby Durrell on Hallam's right or left we also see reflections of Van Zandt and Bonham in the window, indicating that both times we look THROUGH the one-way mirror. Van Zandt and Bonham wouldn't be visible in a reflection inside the interrogation room.
