89 mistakes

New this month Visible crew/equipment: Right when Adult Ralph says "A C+?", Ralph looks from his paper to the blackboard. Near the bottom of his rights glasses lens, you can see a stage light reflected in it, as well as the silhouette of a crew members head. Do not mistake it for the classroom light reflected near the top of the same lens.

New this week Suggested correction: It's a silly kids daydream that is being imagined his own way. Daydreams are like any dreams. Anything can happen, therefore not a mistake.

New this month Visible crew/equipment: When the mom is sitting on the floor holding the broken lamp, as the dad runs in, you can see the shadow of a boom mic near the mom's left shoulder.

Continuity mistake: When Raphie's mother is working on the turkey on Christmas morning, there is a jar of pickles on the table next to the turkey. In the next scene the mother is coming up from the basement carrying a jar of pickles and places them on the table in the same place.

Add time

Visible crew/equipment: Towards the beginning of the movie when Ralphie's dad is in the basement fixing the furnace and the entire family is staring at the door, you need to keep an eye on the left side of the screen. There is a crewmember in the family room, who is on the screen by mistake. You don't see the person right away, but it is in that sequence when you see the mom in the shot, then you can see the leg of the person very quickly in the background.

Add time

Other mistake: Melinda Dillon's name is misspelled "Dillion" in the end credits.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When the "old man" first puts the lamp on the edge of the box there is no light fixture on which to place the shade. He then returns the lamp to the box and when he brings it out, there is a place to put the shade. Also as he hands it to the mother and then takes it back to put it on the table, there is no electrical cord visible. However, just before he sets it down on the table you can see a cord in his left hand.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie's dad is going through the wooden box to see his prize there is a lot of excelsior in it to keep it protectively packaged. When he's bent down digging through it, he has a lot of it on his back. In the next shot when he is standing up, he's perfectly clean.

Add time

Continuity mistake: In the kitchen scene, as Ralphie's father comes in for hot water to thaw the car, and then turns his attention to the furnace, there is a white funnel on the shelf beneath the clock. The camera follows him to the basement steps and the smoke coming from the register. In the next shot, showing the anxious family, Ralphie's mother moves forward and the funnel has moved to the sink behind Ralphie's head.

Add time

Continuity mistake: After Melinda Dillon breaks the leg lamp, she holds the broken leg in her arms in a pile of three separate pieces. After Darren McGavin asks "What broke?", the 'leg' magically heals itself into one single, straight, yet loosely-knit piece.

xx:xx:xx

Visible crew/equipment: On Christmas morning when Ralphie opens up the bunny suit, you can see stage lights in his glasses.

Add time

Visible crew/equipment: In the scene after Ralphie beats up Farcus in which Melinda Dillon finds Randie in the cupboard, you can see a shadow moving continuously on the chair pushed under the table on the right hand side of the shot.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When the father comes in for hot water for the car, the furnace goes haywire and black smoke comes out of the register. The father goes to the basement to fix the furnace and yells upstairs for somebody to open the damper. The mother goes over and begins to move the bottom lever and then changes her mind and moves the top lever all the way to the left. In the next shot the top lever is all the way to the right while the bottom lever has miraculously moved all the way to the left.

Add time

Visible crew/equipment: As the buck teeth are being handed out at the beginning of the classroom scene, the camera pans to follow Miss Shields and you can very briefly see the shadow of the boom microphone on the wall at the top of the screen.

xx:xx:xx

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie fights Scut Farcus, he starts out with snow on his hat and jacket, from the snowball Scut threw at him. Then in the next frame, there's no snow on him. It goes back and forth like that throughout the whole fight scene.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When the father is reading the paper on Christmas morning, the dogs run by him coming from the front door, but in the previous scene the only door open for the dogs to come in through was the backdoor.

xx:xx:xx

Continuity mistake: Early in the movie when Ralphie catches up with Flick on the way to school, Ralphie is holding a book or folder that has the top left corner folded over. In the next shot when Schwartz joins them, the fold is now on the bottom left side. Ralphie's arm covers the top corner of the book most of the time so look closely during the last few seconds of the scene.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie's father is sitting in the chair reading the funnies (before the dogs ruin the turkey), there is a small gold lampshade sitting on the table next to him. In the first shot, there is a Christmas bow on it. In the following shot, the bow has disappeared.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Melinda Dillon breaks the lamp, it is broken into many pieces, but when Darren McGavin is gluing it back together it is now in much fewer and bigger broken pieces. Obviously different broken lamps were used.

Add time

Continuity mistake: In the playground scene when Flick first sticks his tongue to the flagpole, the street in the background has been snowplowed. The kids all go back in to the classroom without Flick. When the teacher asks "Where's Flick?", and looks out the window and sees him at the pole, the same street in the back ground has not been plowed.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When the teacher is trying to make the kids feel bad for Flick, look at the blackboard. The garland is covering something written that is underlined: all that is seen is a G to the right. As she tells them of the theme, the garland is no longer covering the writing.

Add time

Revealing mistake: In the scene on Christmas morning when the Bumpus' dogs run in and eat the turkey, during the shot of the dad sitting in the chair reading the comics, one of the dogs bumps the camera and jostles it a little bit.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Santa pushes Ralphie down the slide with his foot, Santa is actually seated too far away from the slide for his foot to have reached Ralphie's face. In all the wide shots of the scene (especially the very last one as the family leaves the store), you can see that Santa's chair is placed too far away from the entrance of the slide for his foot to have reached the sizable distance to Ralphie's face. But in the tighter P.O.V. shots where Santa is talking to Ralphie just before he gives him the boot, you can see that Santa's chair has been moved over and placed directly in front of the slide so that he can easily reach Ralphie's face. Even better, just as the Elf places Ralphie in Santa's lap, there is a 360 degree panoramic shot that shows just how far away the slide is from Santa's foot.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie beats up the neighborhood bully there is snow all over the ground, but only in the immediate yard. Right over the fence the ground is clean. In a later shot when Mom is pulling Ralphie off the bully there is snow in all the yards.

Add time

Revealing mistake: When Ralphie is walking along after getting the C+ on his theme, he gets hit with a "snowball sandwich." if you look closely at his face and eyes, you can see that he has his eyes closed in expectation of getting hit.

Add time

Movie Nut

Continuity mistake: Looking out the classroom window, in the scene where the teacher has gone out to help free Flick's tongue from the flagpole, we see the fire truck has arrived and that a police car has just pulled in from the left and has stopped. The shot changes to show Ralphie saying "Oh no," and then another closer shot from outside, during which the police car is again pulling up at the very same spot.

xx:xx:xx

Continuity mistake: When everyone is shown in a close up as they open up their Christmas presents, take a look at the father. While he is opening his gift, he has a yellow tie around his neck. When he says, "Didn't I get a tie this year?" the tie is not around his neck anymore.

Add time

Continuity mistake: During dinner Randy has been eating like a "piggie" and his face is covered with food, when the doorbell rings. As he gets up to answer the door he looks to left and his face is clean but then as they go to the door there are mashed potatoes on his face again.

Add time

Continuity mistake: Near the beginning, when Ralphie runs from his house to catch up to Flick, on the way to school, notice that Flick is carrying a school book, which has a beige cover visible to the camera. In the next shot Schwartz joins the group from the very next house on the block, and within a time span of approximately two seconds, Flick's book cover has become blue in color.

xx:xx:xx

Continuity mistake: When the teacher collects all the fake buck teeth from the entire class in one hand, there is no way she can hold all twenty sets of teeth in one hand as we're expected to believe. (20 because there are four rows of five desks in the classroom.) She also doesn't deposit anywhere near twenty sets of teeth when we see her hand pour them in the desk drawer.

Add time

Factual error: The movie was set in the mid-to-late 1940s, however, the red wagons shown in the display in Higbee's corner window at the beginning of the film, bear a Radio Flyer script logo which was designed in 1967.

xx:xx:xx

Visible crew/equipment: Camera lights (and perhaps some crew, barely) can be seen in Ralphie's sunglasses, when he is imagining himself as a blind person.

Add time

Other mistake: When Pierre Andre is giving the members of the "Secret Society" their message, listen carefully. The first number is 12. Towards the end of the message he says 12 again. Since the first letter of the first word is "B", and there are no other "B's" in the entire message, I guess this is another one that slipped by the editor.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When they set up the lamp for the first time, you can see the mom turn away from the window and put her hands on Ralphie's shoulders from the dad's point of view, outside. Then when the camera shifts inside, she does it again.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Randy shows Mommy "how the piggies eat", the shots are obviously out of sequence. There are times when the amount of mashed potatoes on the plate greatly increases from the shot before. And watch the meat loaf a couple shots just before the scene ends. Three large pieces of meat loaf lie scattered on Randy's place mat, but they instantly disappear in the next wide shot.

Add time

Factual error: This film takes place in the mid-to-late 40s. The doorknobs throughout Ralphie's house are too modern for the type of doorknobs used in homes built in that era. This is especially obvious in the kitchen scene when the furnace is smoking and you see the cellar door and in the bathroom scene, when Ralphie is decoding the "secret" message from Pierre Andre. No bathroom door of that era would have a doorknob like the one shown in the film.

Add time

Continuity mistake: In Ralph's dream sequence of being blind by "soap poisoning", the lenses of his shades go from opaque with a reflective finish, to a matte finish and back.

Add time

Movie Nut

Visible crew/equipment: When dad hits the hubcap out of Ralphie's hands, as it spins, you can see the light rigs reflected in it.

Add time

Movie Nut

Audio problem: When Ralphie's father opens the crate containing the leg lamp, he says, "Well, it could be anything." Then his mother says, "Maybe they forgot" without moving her lips. Obviously dubbed in later.

Add time

Continuity mistake: On Christmas morning when they open presents, the sleeves on the mother's robe move back and forth between rolled up and rolled down.

Add time

Continuity mistake: During the first breakfast scene, Ralphie's bacon is on his left on the plate, he takes one bite of it and now the camera angle changes to show the bacon on his right and a large empty space on the left, where the bacon was moments before.

Add time

MovieFan612

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie and the boys first meet Scut Farkas and Grover Dill, Grover Dill's zipper jacket is up all the way and then, it's halfway down. It keeps changing from up to down.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When the delivery men are wheeling the "major award" into the doorway, it has a rope tied around it. As the camera angle moves inside the house, the rope is gone.

Add time

Other mistake: At the end when Ralphie takes his gun outside to use for the first time the shot bounces back and hits him, knocking him off his feet. His gun comes in from the side a second later like someone tossed it into the shot.

xx:xx:xx

dabears51907

Continuity mistake: In the Chinese restaurant scene, the opening shot through the window shows the worker directing the music with Ralphie to his right and he is facing the singers. In the next shot, the same worker is behind Ralphie and the singers are to his right.

Add time

Continuity mistake: As Ms. Shields lectures the children on what happened to Flick, the phrase "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is written on the blackboard behind her. But when she is done lecturing them, she turns around to reveal "A Theme: What I Want for Christmas" written there instead.

Add time

MovieFan612

Continuity mistake: When the dogs steal the turkey and wreck the kitchen, there's a scene of the table broken and no pot holder is on the table. In the next scene, there is a pot holder sitting on the broken table.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Randy is getting dressed for school, his mittens keep appearing and disappearing from his hands.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie's dad comes in after finding his Oldsmobile has frozen overnight, he tosses his hat onto the dining room table. It tumbles onto a chair next to the table. The next time you see the table, the hat has made its way to the table top.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie is re-reading his theme to himself, there is a closeup shot of the notebook and his handwriting. In that shot Ralphie has his left hand flat but in the following shot Ralphie has his left hand in a fist.

Add time

Continuity mistake: In the second kitchen scene after Ralphie sits, the camera looks at the cellar door, where you hear the old man cussing up a "cloud of profanity that still hangs over Lake Michigan." The damper controls are sitting top to the left, bottom to the right. After the "accident" with the lamp, dad comes upstairs. The controls are now reversed, top to the right, bottom to the left.

Add time

Movie Nut

Continuity mistake: In the school classroom scene, the teacher writes "Silas" in cursive on the blackboard and very emphatically dots the "i" in Silas with her chalk. The dot is visible then and even in the long shot from the back of the classroom, however, in the next, more close-up shot, as the students are filing past her desk and handing in their fake buck teeth, there is no dot above the "i".

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: One shot of the family opening the Christmas presents is from above; if you look quickly near the top of the screen you can see the ceiling cut away and even shadows moving on this area - obviously a set piece.

Add time

Visible crew/equipment: During the scene where Ralphie looks out of his window at his snow covered back yard, there is a hat-wearing crew member and some black equipment visible in the lower left of the screen.

Add time

Continuity mistake: In the living room scenes, on the mantel in front of the clock, lighted candles appear and disappear during the movie.

Add time

Other mistake: When the leg lamp is set up and turned on, the entire leg lights up. Trouble is, when you first see it, you can see there is no light in it, nor a fixture. Later, after it is broken, you again see no lighting of any kind in the leg. I don't think the light from its position on top of the leg would have illuminated the leg all the way down to the shoe at the bottom.

Add time

Movie Nut

Other mistake: When Ralphie and Flick are walking to school for the first time, they meet up with Schwartz, coming down the steps of his house which appears to be two houses down from Ralphie's. Later, when Ralphie is lying in bed after the soap in the mouth scene, the narrator (older Ralphie), states how "Three blocks away, Schwartz was getting his."

Add time

Rob Meears

Continuity mistake: As the old man goes out to see the infamous leg lamp from the road, Randy is behind mom. A second later, the angle changes and Randy is suddenly in the adjacent window beside the lamp.

Add time

Movie Nut

Continuity mistake: After Ralphie and Randy had gotten away from Farkus, Ralphie checks the mailbox for his decoder ring. After seeing that he was "skunked again", he closes the box, goes inside, and the camera pans to see Randy coming. If you look closely, the suit is totally free of any dusting of snow.

Add time

Movie Nut

Continuity mistake: After Ralphie's mother calls Mrs. Schwartz because of the F - - word, the narrator says, "Three blocks away, Schwartz was getting his." Yet at the beginning of the movie, when Ralphie leaves his house, he has only walked past 3-4 houses when Schwartz comes out to meet him and Flick.

Add time

Continuity mistake: Just after the fight between Ralphie and Farkus starts, there is a shot of the two from the side and already there is quite a bit of blood on Farkus's face. But then in a shot from over Ralphie's shoulder, there is no blood visible on Farkus's face at all.

xx:xx:xx

Jeff Swanson

Visible crew/equipment: When Ralphie comes into the kitchen, he passes in front of the camera. As he does so, you can see the shadow of the camera on him.

Add time

Movie Nut

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie is deciphering the code, the 18 on the bottom line alternates between 18 and 8. 18 is the correct 8=X.

xx:xx:xx

jairodrigue

Continuity mistake: When Farkus grabs Schwartz and tries to make him say "uncle", the end of Schwartz's stocking cap is hanging loose in front of him. But in the following shot - showing Farkus throwing Schwartz to the ground - the end of the stocking cap is behind Schwartz's back.

xx:xx:xx

Jeff Swanson

Factual error: The narrator explains of the broken lamp that later that evening he (dad) would bury it next to the garage, however with that much snow and cold in December, the ground would be frozen and he would not be able to dig through it without some serious time, effort and equipment.

Add time

Continuity mistake: In Miss Shield's class there is a roll of scotch tape that is hanging over the edge of a box. A few seconds later, it's moved further on back of the box and not hanging over the edge as much.

Add time

Other mistake: When the father "won" and he tells the family it was going to be sent "on tonight", he accidentally closes the door on one of the hound's ears. The dog starts moving up and down, which means the ear was thin enough to move around. If the ear was thin enough to move around, the dog could've just pulled itself out.

xx:xx:xx

Revealing mistake: When Dad gets the bowling ball, it's already drilled, and obviously not for him. Watch how he holds it and puts it down. The holes look very small.

Add time

Mike Keating

Visible crew/equipment: As Santa's foot closes in on Ralphie's face to push him down the slide, the shadow on his boot is the squared light shade of the camera.

Add time

Movie Nut

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Ralphie's mom asks him what he wants for Christmas and he blurts out "a red rider BB gun" there's a spoon that moves from the table next to the plate, to on the plate in the next shot.

xx:xx:xx

dabears51907

Continuity mistake: After seeing the dinner for tomorrow, Ralphie sits down and starts to pour some milk. The shot cuts to the cellar door, and back to Ralphie. He is just starting to pour the milk again.

Add time

Movie Nut

Other mistake: When Ralphie is copying down Pierre Andre's numbers to decode, the first number is "12." If you look at the decoder in the next scene when he is in the bathroom decoding the message, the numbers correspond to where they are in the alphabet. The first letter in the message is "B." Therefore, the first number should have been "2", not "12."

Add time

Other mistake: When dad comes home with the telegram saying that he won a "major award", look at the car. There is snow piled up on the top of the car, the windshields, and the hood, at least an inch thick. Even then, the hot engine would make the hood warm up, and in turn, melt at least some of the snow. And the windshields look like there was enough snow removed to guide the car, instead of removing as much as possible for safety. It looks like the car was simply pushed from off camera.

Add time

Movie Nut

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie and Randy go see Santa at Higbee's, Santa's eyebrows are real bushy. And, a few seconds later, they're a lot thinner than what they were.

Add time

Character mistake: Right after the firefighters have removed Flick's tongue from the flagpole, notice the police officer on the left (Flick's right). He is wearing his sidearm on his right but his Sam Browne cross strap is attached to his belt on his left. The whole point of the cross strap is to support the weight of the sidearm, so the officer is wearing it backwards.

Add time

Texijapi

Character mistake: Randy is exuberantly laughing as dad comes back into car when Ralphie said "fudge." This is in the young actors anticipating of the mom's reaction yell about "fudge" from a previous take. In fact a "tell" is that Darren McGavin admonishes "Randy" when he gets into the car.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When he shoots his gun, Ralphie's glasses are shown fallen on clean snow, but when he steps on them, the broken ones are shown on snow with quite a bit of debris.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie beats up the neighborhood bully, the chain link fence hole area where the kids look through changes multiple times between shots, for example the vertical plant vine trunk disappears.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When we see Flick stuck to the pole with our back to the school the background tree trunk has ample green growth sprouting out but later, when it's started snowing and he's being rescued, the growth is gone.

Add time

Revealing mistake: When they close up on the boys at the flagpole you can see what is probably a pole support bar going down at 45° from the flag pole. Though looking too straight for flexible tubing, this could alternatively be an air suction tube that was used in holding Flick's tongue to the pole.

Add time

Continuity mistake: First breakfast scene, the stack of toast moves from Randy's end of the table to Mom's end.

Add time

Audio problem: When Ralph and Randy are in line waiting for Santa, if you listen closely Santa keeps repeating the same lines like "And what do you want for Christmas, Billy?" "get him off my lap," "Santa can't wait all night let's go!" "HO HO HO!" but in the exact same tone, the child and Randy's screaming is also on repeat too.

Add time

Cloude2

Continuity mistake: After Grover Dill tells the boys to stop, he drops the hand he's pointing with. A second later, he drops it again.

Add time

Movie Nut

Factual error: There was no foil wrapping paper in the 1940s.

Add time

Factual error: In the opening street scene a Salvation Army band is playing Christmas carols. These arrangements were not written or published until the 1950's.

Add time

Revealing mistake: After Ralphie's dad loosens the first corner of the crate, it's very obvious the other corners were deliberately left unfastened to make it easier to remove the lid on camera.

Add time

Audio problem: When the leg lamp breaks, it makes a crashing sound like breaking glass, but then the wife asks "Jealous of a plastic lamp?" and it's obvious that the lamp is indeed soft plastic.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie and Randy go to see Santa (after the parade), their parents leave them alone to wait in line. Listen carefully to Santa in the background. You can hear him mention a boy who's wet and saying to get him off his lap as Ralphie and Randy go to wait in line. This is the same boy who we don't see until Ralphie and Randy are on the stairs leading up to Santa.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Ralphie (blind from "soap poisoning" in the dream sequence) comes up to the door, in the reflection on his shades, it looks like he's facing a white door. When the camera cuts to a shot from behind him, you see a green door with the gold colored horseshoe.
