Continuity mistake: Gimli is lying with his face under the water, after jumping off the Deeping Wall and landing on the Uruk-hai. In the close-up, the right arm that grabs Gimli's shoulder to help him out of the water is Legolas' right arm. Yet, in the wide shot, suddenly it is Aragorn helping Gimli to his feet, not Legolas.
Continuity mistake: As Faramir holds the Horn of Gondor, the rope is attached to metal loops on the smaller half of the horn - without the mouthpiece. However, in FotR, when Boromir is hit with the third arrow and the Horn of Gondor is cloven in two, the rope is attached to the metal loops on the half with the long mouthpiece. (There are only two metal loops and they are permanently affixed.)
Continuity mistake: Merry and Pippin were bound when taken by the Uruk-hai, and the bonds weren't cut until after they managed to escape during the fight. Yet, when the horse almost crashed down on Pippin, he had his arms spread out up near his face, not bound, even though they weren't cut until later. In the next shot, his hands are bound again.
Continuity mistake: When the Uruk-hai stop to rest by Fangorn Forest, they drop Merry and Pippin right next to each other, yet Pippin then has to crawl some distance towards Merry so that he can speak to him. [On the Extended DVD, Peter Jackson says that parts of this scene were shot two years apart, and that in fact it was made up of shots for two distinct scenes. Either of these might explain this discontinuity in positioning.]
Other mistake: Just as Gandalf and the Rohirrim are riding into the Uruk-hai and they clash, go slowly, frame by frame. Legolas will be on the right of the screen. Keep going frame by frame. You'll soon see a few pretty clear frames of Arwen with her sword, on her white horse. She's sitting to the right of Legolas. Her long hair is pulled back into a braid. She's wearing pink sleeves. She's the only one on the screen with that color, so you can't miss it. (Slow motion can be helpful but is unnecessary).
Continuity mistake: When Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and Gandalf are galloping towards Edoras, then stop and when they are riding up towards the entryway at the bottom of the hill, Shadowfax has a white rope around his neck. However, as they're riding through Edoras, passing the people, Shadowfax no longer has the white rope around his neck.
01:12:30 - 01:16:20
Revealing mistake: Shadowfax, the horse that only Gandalf is supposed to be able to ride, will not take a saddle and bridle, so throughout the majority of the film, they try very hard to hide the saddle that Gandalf is obviously sitting on, even though you can see him holding the front of it underneath his robes, and sometimes, you can see him holding a very thin bridle. But right at the end of the film, when you have the shot of Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, etc. on horseback, you see Gandalf's feet in stirrups.
Revealing mistake: Frodo, Sam, Faramir and Gollum are at the sewer in Osgiliath when Faramir asks, "Cirith Ungol?" and then grabs Gollum's neck. Frodo and Sam watch as Gollum is grabbed, but their eyes do not follow Gollum as Faramir grabs him, their eyes remain focused on the ground to their left. The shot of Faramir and the shot of Frodo and Sam were edited together, with Gollum added later.
Continuity mistake: When Merry and Pippin first enter Saruman's storeroom, in the close-up, Merry is holding an apple and a large glass carafe with wine. As the camera pans out, to show the whole storeroom, he is no longer holding the large glass carafe, but he is holding an apple and a turkey. Extended DVD.
Other mistake: It seems as though the Elves at the battle of Helm's Deep aren't quite as coordinated and elegant as Elves are rumoured to be. During the Helm's Deep battle scene, Aragorn is shouting commands to the Elven archers. In the close up shot of Aragorn while it's still raining, look to the left of Aragorn, there is an Elf who gets hit in the head, by the quivers, on the back of the Elf next to him.
Revealing mistake: At the Battle of Helm's Deep, just after Aragorn slices the leg off the Uruk and just before Gimli slides down between the legs of another Uruk and smashes his axe into his chest, look carefully at the Elf on the left side of the screen. He arches his bow and fires, followed by a specific shooting bow sound effect, but there is no arrow.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf, Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli walk into Meduseld, Gandalf is seen arm-in-arm with Legolas, apparently leaning on the Elf for support, but when the camera cuts away and returns, Gandalf is not in contact with Legolas, but they are arm-in-arm again for the next shot.
Deliberate mistake: In the scene after the Helm's Deep battle, when Aragorn meets Eowyn, the earlier footage of Aragorn's return to Helm's Deep is used. He has the wound on his shoulder and is dressed like he was during the 'falling' episode. The background (people in the fortress walking calmly) also indicates that this takes place before the battle. This scene should immediately follow the one where Aragorn is greeted by Gimli ("you are the most reckless man I ever knew"). Confirmed on cast commentary, extended DVD.
Other mistake: At the battle of Helm's Deep, Theoden, Aragorn, Legolas and the rest ride out of the Keep to meet the enemy, watch as the first men out of the gate kill all the Uruks on the bridge, yet the men riding behind them continue to hack and slash away at thin air.
Continuity mistake: When Saruman and Wormtongue look down from Orthanc at the Uruk-hai army, it is spread out across the plain in front of the tower. What happened to the vast caverns which had been dug into the ground? Some are shown off to the left of shot, but the landscape had earlier been shown as much more pitted in other scenes.
Continuity mistake: After Hama says, "By order of Grima Wormtongue," we see Legolas handing a guard his bow, which he was carrying in his hand. Then in the front close-up of Legolas, we see him taking out the twin blades that are on his back and he even does the fancy spin with the blades in this shot. Then there is a shot of Gimli. Then in a side shot of Aragorn, Gandalf and Legolas, we see Legolas again taking out the twin blades that are on his back.
Factual error: When Faramir and his men are looking at the map of Middle-Earth in Henneth Annûn, you can see that the plain of Dagorlad is actually spelled Dagorland on the map. An odd mistake, especially considering the fact that they got it right when they spoke of it in the first movie.
Continuity mistake: During the Warg battle, just after Gimli falls off Arod, the Warg across the field lifts his face and spots Gimli. In the two close-up shots, directly behind the Warg, on his right, there are two arrows sticking up out of a dead body. However, in the wide shot that follows, there is no body with two arrows protruding, anywhere behind him. It is not the bodies to his side.
Revealing mistake: At Helm's Deep, in the 1st close-up, Gimli says, "You could have picked a better spot," and two particular Elves stand at his left. In the next wide shot as Aragorn approaches, the Elves to the left of Gimli are different Elves than in the previous shot. One of those Elves from the 2nd shot is seen close-up when Aragorn walks away. Also, the second row of Elves is much closer to the first row of Elves in the 1st shot.
Continuity mistake: In this shot, Pippin grabs some apples and a green ear of corn, then he puts it all into his left hand, starts to turn around and with his empty right hand he reaches for a floating cauliflower. The camera angle changes, and in the next shot, we see him holding an apple and corn in the right hand and another apple in his left hand. Floating to the right of him is no longer a cauliflower, but a green bottle. Extended DVD.
Deliberate mistake: In the director's commentary, it is explained that the scene of Aragorn arriving at Helm's Deep was filmed early in the shoot, before it was decided that he would have lost the Evenstar. Consequently it had to be painted out. However, when Aragorn turns to leave Gimli a flash of silver from the jewel at his chest still remains.
Continuity mistake: Éowyn and many of the refugees are shown as they see Helm's Deep in the distance. In the first wide shot, Éothain and Freda are riding on the horse and a particular rock formation is seen way in the distance. They keep riding towards Helm's Deep, which we see in the next shot. In the children's next close-up, they are now right in front of that rock formation that was shown in the earlier shot. This is not due to zooming. The two pieces of footage were switched, so as to have their close-up seen last.
Deliberate mistake: During the Warg attack, Aragorn jumps onto a moving Warg and in a close-up, he headbutts the Orc rider. In the next shot, as they're riding, they pass a Rohan rider on a white horse. In the background there are dead bodies strewn on the hill to their right, as they're approaching a huge bush also to their right. As they continue moving, there are multiple shots, including Aragorn falling and stabbing the Orc. In the shot just after the Orc rips off the Evenstar, the Orc falls off the Warg and it is the very same background plate as before, as they pass that huge bush to their right. These two pieces of footage were obviously one sequence that was split and other shots were inserted in between them.
Continuity mistake: Legolas throws down the rope to Aragorn to help he and Gimli escape. Aragorn then grabs the rope with his left hand and holds onto Gimli and his sword with his right hand, plus Gimli's head is lower than Aragorn's. Legolas starts to hoist them up and in the next shot, Aragorn is holding onto the rope with his right hand and Gimli and the sword with his left. In the next shot of them, it's vice versa again. As they're reaching the top, Gimli's head is higher than Aragorn's. Nothing to do with spinning around - just look at the hands.
Continuity mistake: When the Berserker Uruk-hai with the torch runs to the bomb to detonate it, Aragorn yells at Legolas to stop him. Legolas fires an arrow with green short fletch (feathers), then you see the berserker hit by a long white fletched arrow, the kind the Lothlorien Elves use. A second time, Aragorn yells to Legolas to kill him, and then again, the arrow shot by Legolas is not the same type as the one that hits the Uruk-hai. The Uruk is NOT hit by arrows of another Elf, it is Legolas that hits him, twice. [People keep trying to correct this by saying that Legolas reuses arrows, but read the mistake properly. We SEE the arrow he fires, and we SEE that the arrow which hits isn't the same as the one he fired.]
Continuity mistake: The bodies and rocks behind Gimli change positions, between shots. When Gimli says the words, "That's not bad for a pointy-eared Elvish Princeling," there is a rock right behind Gimli to his right. In his close-up it's not there. Yet, when the camera does another close-up, when he reacts to the arrow between his legs, the rock is to his right again. When Gimli says the words, "I myself am sitting pretty on forty three," behind him to his right, a Rohan turns over the body of an Uruk onto its back. When Gimli says the words, "He was already dead," that Uruk hasn't been turned over.
Continuity mistake: When Faramir kneels in front of Sam and Frodo, in the close-up the hand of a Ranger is on Sam's shoulder. The hand and short fingernails are very dirty. After Faramir's lieutenant says, "You know the laws of our country..." the hand and longer fingernails are clean. Then in the next close-up the hand and short fingernails are dirty again. Sam's hood, hair, etc. differ in these shots too.
Deliberate mistake: Just after they've clashed with the Warg, while riding on Arod, Legolas lets loose his first arrow and hits a Warg in his face and it flips over. In this first shot, the background behind this Warg is the same background as in the very next shot. This first background shot is really the successive shot of this second background shot. The shot just after Gimli falls off his horse, is the third successive shot, only it's been flipped. The same men on horses are riding across the field in the background, as this was one piece of footage that was cut into three parts. Warg and riders were added to the image, to make them appear different and one was flipped.
Continuity mistake: During the Warg attack, as the first Warg falls on top of Gimli, in the wide shot we see the area they fall, past the Warg. Later, when the second Warg climbs on top of the corpses and Gimli, in the wide shot, as Aragorn throws the spear we see the area past the second Warg again. The landscape, including patches of grass and rocks, is different in the two shots. This has nothing to do with the angle of the shots.
Continuity mistake: When Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn are standing atop the wall and Legolas says, "Your friends are with you Aragorn," in this close-up we can see that Legolas' right braid is loose and half undone. As Legolas lets loose his first arrow in the rain, his right braid is perfect again. Various close-ups were done in pickups long after the principal photography.
01:00:40 - 01:04:05Super Grover
Continuity mistake: Merry's shirt is untucked under the front bottom of his vest when Pippin chases him and then as he sits on the roots of the tree. The tree starts to devour them. Just after the shot of hairy Hobbit toes, there is a close-up of Merry's jacket and vest, before panning to his face. It shows that his shirt is now tucked in, as well as in the far shot later, when Treebeard rescues them.
Continuity mistake: Sam helps Frodo up and says, "There's some good in this world," then Faramir walks over and the Hobbits face him. Sam's rolled blanket is seen high up on his back, above his shoulders. Yet in the very next close-up, which is a flipped shot, the blanket is way down on his back, way below his shoulders. Frodo's hair is completely different in both shots too.
Continuity mistake: When Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas stand and then enter Fangorn, there are multiple shots that are flipped and then not, back and forth. For example, when they get ready to fight the White Wizard, the shots are flipped. The quivers and brooches of Aragorn and Legolas are the wrong way.
Continuity mistake: Just before Brego comes up to an unconscious Aragorn, his sword is lying on his left side, perpendicular to his body, with the blade facing towards his back and the hilt facing his front. In the next shot, BEFORE Aragorn even rolls over onto his back, the blade is now pointing up his back and the hilt is at his thigh. Also once again, the tear in the coat and shirt at Aragorn's left shoulder is very different in both shots, as it is in many of the following shots too.
Revealing mistake: When Theoden, Aragorn, Legolas and the Rohirrim soldiers ride out to meet the enemy just before Gandalf's return, they charge down the ramp into the stampeding Uruk-hai. If you watch the Uruk-hai very carefully you can see that some are running in slow motion, even though the scene is played at normal speed.
Continuity mistake: Just after Haldir dies, Aragorn jumps onto a ladder and rides it into a crowd of Uruk-hai. In the close up shot when he first jumps he has his sword in his right hand, but when they cut to a longer shot for the fall his hands are empty. When he lands on the ground, the sword is back in his hand.
Continuity mistake: In the first shot of the Uruk-hai running away fom Helm's Deep, towards the trees, the shot of Helm's Deep in the background is correct. The Causeway is littered with many bodies and the ladders are leaning against the Keep and the Deeping Wall with the break in it. However, in the next shot of them, as they are entering the forest of trees with Helm's Deep behind them, the Causeway has no bodies on it and there are no ladders leaning against the Keep. Also visible when Theoden is shouting, "Victory, we have victory."
Continuity mistake: At Edoras, after Wormtongue spits on Aragorn's hand and runs away, a man shouts, "Hail Theoden King!" The crowd bowing at the bottom of the stairs in this wide shot, is more dense, than in the close-up shot after, where the crowd is very sparse to the right. Not to mention some people are arranged quite differently.
Continuity mistake: After Legolas yells, "A scout!" Aragorn runs back towards the Rohirrim to warn them. In the first shot, he's running down the hill, straight ahead of him, is Theoden on his horse, Éowyn leading two horses on foot and people to her left. In the next shot, Éowyn's two horses are pointed to her right, there aren't any people to her left, and now standing between Theoden and Éowyn is Gimli with Arod.
Continuity mistake: First a shot of the Uruks shooting up the second anchor to the Keep, then there's a shot of a line of Uruks pulling on the cable. In the next shot, an Uruk has his arm wrapped around the frame, between the rungs of the ladder. We can also see the feet of another Uruk, standing on the horizontal ladder. This 'real' ladder has a much narrower width than the CG ladder, we see going up in the next shot, which is wide enough to hold 3-4 Uruks, side by side, as it's being raised to the Keep. Then when it reaches the top of the Keep, it's the 'real' ladder again. There is a VERY noticeable difference between the real ladders and the WETA CG ladders, top or bottom.
Continuity mistake: Aragorn remembers what Gandalf said, "...at dawn look to the East." Theoden crosses the floor in front of Aragorn saying, "The horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the Deep," as Aragorn turns around towards Theoden. Theoden now turns to face Aragorn, as he continues, "one last time." In the next shot, Theoden puts his hand on Aragorn's shoulder, behind Aragorn is a chair to his right. The next shot of Theoden close up shows his back to the front guarded door of the chamber with the chair overturned behind him. Earlier when Theoden crosses the floor past Aragorn, their positions changed. It should be Aragorn's back facing the front guarded door of the chamber now. Also, the overturned chair should be upright.
Revealing mistake: There are quite a few times where the Uruk-hai fitted skin wrinkles, creases or bubbles up where they shouldn't. Some examples are, at Helm's Deep, while they fight on the Deeping Wall, as the Uruks climb the ladders and when Gandalf charges with the Rohirrim.
Continuity mistake: At Edoras, after the first close-up shot of Éowyn kneeling at the bedside of Theodred, there is a front wide shot. In that shot the animal skin rugs going around the bed differ in position from the next wide shot behind Éowyn. Note especially, the rugs at the foot of the bed on the opposite side of Éowyn.
Continuity mistake: In the opening shot of the stable scene, there is a saddle in the stall next to Brego. A few shots later, you see a man lifting that saddle and start to walk away. There is no saddle in the next few shots. Then the saddle is back again, for Éowyn to pick up. (Extended DVD.)
01:30:35 - 01:31:40Super Grover
Continuity mistake: At the destruction of Isengard, the dam is broken and the river is starting to break through the wall. In the wide shot as the river starts to break through, we see the wall breaking and all the CG Orcs at the top of the wall falling. In the next close-up, we see the CG Orcs still standing on top of the wall and when they do fall in this close-up, they fall very differently than in the previous wide shot.
Continuity mistake: After Legolas leaps onto Arod, the men on horseback change in their arrangement, as they charge towards the Warg Riders. In one shot Gamling is just drawing his sword, while riding between Theoden and Legolas. Next shot is a Rohan rider directly behind Legolas. Then in the next shot of Theoden, it shows Gamling drawing his sword again, riding behind Legolas.
Continuity mistake: Frodo, Sam and Gollum are resting in the middle of the Dead Marshes. In the wide shot, Sam gives Frodo some Lembas and takes a piece for himself. Sam breaks his apart and smells it a couple of times, while looking at Gollum he holds the Lembas away from his face. Next there's a close-up of Sam holding the Lembas right near his mouth. The piece of Lembas is much bigger in this close-up, than in the very next shot, showing Frodo and Sam.
Deliberate mistake: During the Warg battle, the fourth shot after the close-up of Legolas letting loose the arrow while riding on Arod, a Warg and rider attack a Rohan. In the background is a particular hillside with some dead bodies, and on the left of the screen lies a dead horse with an arrow in its rear. The very next shot, a horse and rider fall and a Warg attacks the rider. The background hillside in this shot, dead horse and all, is the same background plate as the previous one, only it's been flipped.
Continuity mistake: At Henneth Annun, Frodo and Sam have their blindfolds removed, and in this wide shot, behind them to their right one of the Rangers throws a cloth onto a crate that has objects lying on it, and sits down on the sack. In the semi close-up shots of Frodo and Sam, the cloth the Ranger threw lies differently and the things lying on the crate are different too. No one touched them.
Continuity mistake: After seeing the Mûmakil, Frodo and Sam are captured by Faramir's men. In the close-up shot as Frodo says, "We are bound to an errand of secrecy..." he's being held by one of Faramir's men around the shoulders and Frodo is holding the man's forearm. A second man is close to Frodo's left whose right hand is down. In the very next wide shot Frodo is holding the man's arm differently and the second man to his left is not only further away, he's standing differently and grasping the hilt of his sword in front of him. In the next two close-ups of Frodo, he's holding the man's arm exactly the way he was in the first close-up. It's also obvious in the wide shot that it's the scale double of Frodo.
Continuity mistake: At the beginning of the scene, Sam is cooking the rabbits. Behind Gollum, Frodo's coat and pack lay on the left side of the overturned stone carving. In the following close-up, when Frodo goes over to his pack to take out plates and spoons, his coat is now on the right of the overturned carving. In the next wide shot, it's on the left again.
Factual error: At the very end of the film, where Sam, Frodo and Gollum are approaching Mordor after leaving Osgiliath, it pans up over the mountains to reveal Orodruin (Mt. Doom) in the foreground to the right and The Tower of Barad-Dur in the background to the left. According to Tolkien's maps, as seen in the prologue to the Fellowship of the Ring, if they were approaching Minas Morgul from Osgiliath, Orodruin would be to the left and Barad-Dur to the right.
Continuity mistake: Just after the Warg knocks Hama off his horse, in the wide shot, Hama is lying in short green grass and his sword is flat. Then in the first close-up of Hama, he is lying in thick, tall, yellow patches of grass and his sword is sticking way up to his left.
Revealing mistake: Right after Gandalf gave warning that they would not be welcome at Rohan and jumped forward with his horse, next after him Legolas moved forward before Aragorn, you can see Gimli that rode with Legolas was a fake Gimli, the color of his skin was not normal, and he was too stiff.
Audio problem: First there is a wide shot of the Dead Marshes and Gollum says, "Soft and quick as shadows we must be." Then in the next shot as the camera starts to pan towards Sam, he begins to say, "I hate this place, it's too quiet..." When the camera first shows Sam, his mouth is not in sync with these particular words, "I hate this place," the words originally said on camera were changed during ADR. Extended DVD.
Revealing mistake: Just as Theoden yells, "They have broken through, the castle is breached." Legolas is first seen on the exterior wall pulling the string of his bow with NO arrow in his hand twice, but the other times he pulls the string on the bow we do see the arrow before reaching the bridge. Also, after he crosses the bridge, before he gets to the stairs, when he reaches behind him for an arrow the arrow is on his back, not in the quiver, it's just simply on his back. (Do slo-mo or frame by frame if necessary).
Add timeDr Wilson
Continuity mistake: In the stable at Edoras, Éowyn gives the saddle to someone, then starts to walk towards Aragorn, and her long hair is spread out all around her shoulders. Cut to the close-up shot, and her hair is now parted at the neck, hanging straight down in front and back. When Aragorn walks away, her hair is all around her shoulders again.
Continuity mistake: At Edoras, as Wormtongue sits on Theodred's bed speaking to Éowyn, she says, "Leave me alone, snake!" As she stands we see Wormtongue's back, and the fur covers draped over Theodred's legs and all around the foot of the bed. In the next close-up of Wormtongue, he says, "Oh but you are alone," we see Theodred's legs slanted and no fur cover, just the white cover. Cut away to a shot of Éowyn, then back to Wormtongue, and the white cover on Theodred is lying differently on him and some of the fur cover is now seen. Wormtongue did not change positions between shots.
Continuity mistake: In this first shot, there is a close-up of Legolas releasing an arrow towards the oncoming massive Warg attack. Then a wide shot of the hill, with Legolas still letting loose, and in the background, the riders on horseback coming over the hill. To Legolas' left are two riders on horseback that are just passing him. They are Gamling and Gimli. But in the next shot, Gimli is just coming from behind Legolas, and then Legolas leaps onto Arod.
Revealing mistake: After Haldir dies, Aragorn jumps onto the only ladder resting against the steps 'inside' the Deeping Wall. Hanging onto the ladder, he then falls on top of the Uruk-hai down below. The ladder is now lying on the ground perpendicular to the steps of the wall. However, when Aragorn runs up the stone steps on the side of the Keep, in the aerial CG shot of the wall below, the ladder is not lying on the ground where it should be, under the scurrying feet of the Uruk-hai.
Continuity mistake: At Henneth Annun, Frodo and Sam have their blindfolds removed, and to their left are two barrels. In the 1st shot, one barrel has a brown cloth draped on it with a bowl of nuts and cracked shells and on the second barrel, candles that are not lit. In the 2nd shot, Faramir walks in and to his right the brown cloth under the bowl of nuts is draped differently, the candles, which are lit now, are a different variety and there are also ceramic jugs near the barrels now. After Frodo answers, "Yes. For my part," Faramir gets up and as he walks, the items on the barrels look the same as in the first shot.
Continuity mistake: While running in Fangorn Forest, Aragorn stops kneels down and then says, "These are strange tracks." In the wide shot preceeding just as he kneels down, and in the close-up when he says those words, his position and the position of the rocks and trees surrounding him are very different in both shots. This has nothing to do with camera angle.
Continuity mistake: Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Theoden and others are in the Keep after the walls have been breached, while Aragorn is talking to Theoden about riding out together and the like, Legolas and Gimli are tipping tables up and putting them against the door. However, in one shot when Aragorn is asking about a passage to get the women and children out look behind him, Legolas and Gimli are standing with their weapons drawn, then in the next shot they're back to tipping tables up.
Continuity mistake: What happened to Aragorn's wounds on his shoulders after his fight with the Wargs? When he talks to Theoden on the outer walls of Helm's Deep, the blood is pretty much gone, only the fabric is stained. Later, when he and Legolas have their little heated discussion about the defenders of Helm's Deep, the blood is back again on the skin.
Continuity mistake: During Theodred's funeral, as the bearers of the body lower Theodred off their shoulders, there's a close-up of the soles of Theodred's shoes. As Éowyn starts singing, the body's being passed towards the tomb. There's now another close-up of the soles of Theodred's shoes. The marks on the soles, of the right shoe in particular, are quite different in both shots. The helmet doesn't block the view of the soles on the shoes in either shot.
Deliberate mistake: On the Wall of the Hornburg, in the close-up of Aragorn, he dramatically draws his sword with his left gloved hand. In the next close-up of Aragorn, when he yells, "Hold!" he raises his left hand with the ring on his index finger. In editing, they wanted to have the Elves on the left of the screen and Uruk-hai on the right, so they flipped the first shot.
Revealing mistake: As the Uruk-hai are slamming into the chamber door, with the battering ram, Gimli and Legolas are standing at the door. Across the room, Aragorn says, "Ride out with me," then in the next three shots of Theoden, he's standing in front of the same wall, with particular markings. In the very next shot, Gimli says, "The sun is rising," and he's standing right in front of the very same wall that Theoden is standing right in front of. Then, in the next shot, still standing at that wall, Theoden says, "Yes. Yes. The Horn of Helm Hammerhand..." Both Theoden and Gimli, can not be in front of the same wall at the same time. In the next shot of Gimli, still standing at that same wall, responds, "Yes." He then starts to go off to blow the Horn. The next shot, is a close-up of the door - all the men in front of it and some wood are knocked away, due to the force of the battering ram. In the next shot, as Theoden says, "Let this be the hour when we draw swords..." between Aragorn and Theoden, the men are seen huddled together at the door again, and Legolas and Gimli are there too. Yet, in the next shot, Gimli is hurriedly running up the steps of the tower to the Horn.
Continuity mistake: After the shot of Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli riding towards Edoras, there's a close-up of Theodred. In this shot there is a red pillow next to Theodred's face on his right. In the wide shot behind Éowyn, there is no red pillow to the right of his face. Though there is in this shot a white pillow corner leaning on the headboard, that is not in the previous front wide shot. The fur cover at the foot of the bed lies differently in the front and back wide shots too.
Continuity mistake: After the tree has buried Merry and Pippin in its roots, the close-up of those roots (gnarled and twisted) do not look anything like the roots of the tree in the far shot (straight and broad), when Treebeard says, "Away with you, you should not be waking." Not a case of distance - in the wide shot when Treebeard arrives, just after they're let go, you can compare that shot to the shot just before, and the roots are VERY different, regardless of the Hobbits' size.
Continuity mistake: Just *after* Treebeard stomps on Grishnakh, with his left leg, he leans forward on that left leg, then Pippin yells, "Run Merry!" Then we *see* in the side shot that Treebeard now picks up his right leg and starts to move it forward. Then *mid-step*, in the next front shot, we *see* that Treebeard is now putting his left foot down, not his right. This has nothing to do with camera angles.
Continuity mistake: As the Uruk-hai charge the walls of Helm's Deep, the elves release their arrows first, no problem here. However, when the Rohirrim shoot, the arrows that strike the enemy are not the short, brown-leather fletched arrows that they should be using, but the long white-fletched elven arrows.
Continuity mistake: During the scene when Frodo, Sam, and Gollum are in the Dead Marshes, Gollum begins saying, "Once it takes hold of us..." Gollum moves closer to Frodo as he reaches for the Ring, and then Frodo slaps his hand away as he says, "Don't touch me." You can tell that Gollum was very close to Frodo, however, in the next shot, after Frodo bats him away, Gollum is much farther away than he could possibly be.
Continuity mistake: When Sam jumps at Frodo in Osgiliath when Frodo confronts the Nazgul, they both fall down some stairs. These stairs, seen from the top, have a wall to their left and are open to their right, where the camera is positioned. When they are falling down the first few steps, you can see their feet pointing towards the camera, in the next shot a few steps down it is their heads.
Continuity mistake: When the Warg raises his head from his kill, he spots Gimli and he growls, showing his blood stained teeth. There are spikes on both sides of the harness around his neck. When he charges toward Gimli, Legolas kills him and he falls right in front of Gimli. There are no spikes on the harness, nor are his teeth stained with blood as before.
Deliberate mistake: During the Warg attack, Aragorn is being dragged by the Warg and is heading for the cliff. In the very last wide shot of Aragorn, from behind his head, we see the hillside and riders behind the Warg, where they just came from. Next, we see a couple of shots of Gimli finishing off a Warg. In the next wide shot, the hillside including riders and bodies is the same one as earlier, only it's been flipped.
Continuity mistake: Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli fight the White Wizard who is standing on a rock. He overpowers them and when he says, "You are tracking the footsteps..." the backs of the three are shown. In this shot Aragorn stands to the right, closest to the rock with Gimli in the back to Aragorn's left and Legolas to the left of Gimli. In the very next front shot Aragorn is in the middle now, with Gimli standing near the rock. Legolas is standing in the same place. This has NOTHING to do with camera angle.
Continuity mistake: When Gollum and Sam and Frodo are by the river and Sam and Frodo are talking about Gollum. Frodo turns around and yells something like, "What do you know about it?" When he yells this, he and Sam's faces are a few inches apart. When it cuts to both of them, they are about a foot apart.
Deliberate mistake: First there's a shot of Saruman as he communicates with Sauron using the palantir, then a shot of Barad-dur. Next we see the Orcs at Orthanc pulling down trees and a shot of a tree falling into the cavern below. In FotR, just after Gandalf catches the moth atop Orthanc, we see a shot of a tree falling into the cavern down below. These are the exact same shot, only it's been flipped in this movie.
Revealing mistake: When Gandalf, Aragorn, Theoden, Legolas and Gimli all ride up the hill on horses towards the end, there is a man on a horse on the left of the screen. Who is he and why is he there? He's Éomer's body double (Karl Urban was unavailable) and at some stage they were going to put Éomer's head on him digitally, but they never got around to it. Director's commentary, extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: Legolas says, "Look at them. They're frightened. I can see it in their eyes." In the next wide shot, we see Aragorn's back, men all around, and behind him, to the right, stands Dan Hennah, with wavy, grey hair, in his cameo. In the following close-up, we see Dan Hennah again, standing to Aragorn's left. We also see Alan Lee's cameo, whereas, in the wide shot, Alan's character is not there.
Continuity mistake: At Henneth Annun, Faramir who is alone with Frodo and Sam, walks towards Frodo with his sword pointed at him. Behind Faramir, are many spears leaning against the wall. Then there's a shot of Frodo. In the very next shot there are fewer spears behind Faramir, and they are lined up very differently against the wall too. They are alone, and no one touched the spears.
Continuity mistake: As Gamling and Hama ride past Aragorn and Éowyn, a snowy high mountain range can be seen right behind them. As they are riding past Legolas' view, over Legolas' head, another greener mountain range is right behind them. These shots were filmed at different locations.
Deliberate mistake: In two scenes in particular, Legolas is letting loose his arrow with his left hand, because of shot flipping. When he kills the Warg approaching Gimli and when Legolas severs the rope, causing the tall ladder to collapse. The ladder shots of Legolas were put together later during editing, because Peter J. wanted an extra 'hero' shot of Legolas at Helm's Deep. They took the same shots of Legolas trying to take out the Berserker Uruk-hai and flipped it to specifically fit the later scene of the ladders going up. Commentary, extended DVD.

Continuity mistake: As this scene opens with an Uruk's body being dropped to the ground, the camera pans out to show Legolas and behind Gimli to his left, is a large rock. In the view from the front, now there is a dead Uruk sitting up against the same rock, where there was none before. He's dead, so he didn't move there between shots. Extended DVD.
01:38:50 - 01:42:55Super Grover
Continuity mistake: Just after Sam's speech in Osgiliath, the first shot of Faramir shows several men talking and eating, with a background of decorative stonework and a broken arch on Faramir's right. After the shot of Frodo and Sam, we see the shot of Faramir kneeling. Behind him, we now see different stonework and a squad of men charging forward as if to battle. In the next shot of Faramir, still kneeling, we see soldiers walking and milling around in front of the original background.
Continuity mistake: When Frodo and Sam are down below, near the Black Gate, wanting to run in, but Gollum is convincing Frodo not to, Frodo's pants have a couple of holes at the left knee. Later, when Gollum dives for the fish in the rocky stream, Frodo's pants don't have the holes at the left knee, as seen when he's walking with Sam. Frodo did not change his pants, and this is before they have spent the night, which is the scene right after this one.
01:06:00 - 01:36:55Super Grover
Revealing mistake: When the Uruk-hai are running through the rock canyon while carrying the Hobbits, the Uruk with the painted white hand on his face holds up his right fist. In the theatrical release and regular DVD, a second Uruk then asks of the painted one, "What is it, what do you smell?" and he answers, "Manflesh." The very next shot is of Pippin saying, "Aragorn," followed immediately by the second Uruk saying, "They've picked up our trail." The Uruk who should have the painted hand on his face no longer does. He gives a low growl, then all the Uruk-hai run again. However, in the extended DVD, same scene, when the painted Uruk holds his fist up, it cuts to the Orcs hiding behind the rock, and the very next shot is of those two Uruks, and just like in the regular DVD, the Uruk who is supposed to have the painted hand on his face, does not. It is that Uruk who later in the scene says, "Manflesh," and unlike the regular DVD, without the painted hand on his face. Side note: It may be a different Uruk standing next to the 'second Uruk', in the questionable shots and that's why he doesn't have a painted face, but either way, it's still a mistake between shots.
Continuity mistake: Upon entering the Golden Hall, when Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and Gandalf first arrive at Edoras, watch Gandalf's staff. In the shots from behind, Gandalf uses the staff as a walking stick, but the shots taken from the front, show him keeping the staff at his side, perpendicular to his body.
Continuity mistake: Just before Legolas surfs the shield down the stairs, he is holding the shield in his right hand and his bow in his left hand, which is down. In this shot, he starts to toss the shield down onto the ground, still clutching the bow in his left hand. In the next consecutive wide shot, the shield is still in mid-air, and as he is starting to run towards the moving shield, Legolas does not have the bow in his left hand now. He did not throw the bow over his shoulder. The next shot is a close-up of his feet on the shield, just starting to come to the stairs. In the next wide shot, as he is starting to surf at the top of the stairs, Legolas has the bow in his left hand again and he is lets loose the arrows at the Uruk-hai.
Continuity mistake: When Aragorn is lying on the couch in Arwen's home, during the dream/flashback sequence, he at first has the edge of a grey/green pillow visible just above his right shoulder. After a cut to Arwen and then back to him again, the pillow has slipped down so that it cannot be seen behind his shoulder, though he hasn't moved yet. When he stands, the pillow can be seen on the couch.
Continuity mistake: When Gollum is trying to catch the fish in the rocky bed of water, in the wide shot, Frodo and Sam are walking in the background. The background seen behind Sam and Frodo in that wide shot, is very different to the background in the very next shot, seen behind Frodo and Sam, when Sam says, "Hey stinker," and in the rest of the shots in this scene. The column in the wide shot is the same column seen behind Sam, when he says, "Because. Because that's what he is Mr. Frodo." There are three distinctly different columns shown in the close-ups!
Continuity mistake: Faramir and his men, along with Frodo and Sam, are looking out towards Osgiliath, when someone says, "Osgiliath burns, Mordor has come." Originally, Minas Tirith is seen as well, as it should be, at the base of the mountains behind Osgiliath, which is geographically correct. However, Peter Jackson was forced by studio heads to edit it out of the theatrical version, because it was felt that seeing Minas Tirith then would confuse some viewers, who would think that Minas Tirith was Helm's Deep. In the extended DVD, much to the satisfaction of PJ, Minas Tirith was put back in order to be geographically correct. As heard on Commentary, extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: When Merry and Pippin are at the Entmoot, in several of the front coverage shots, Merry is several feet in front of Pippin and slightly to the left. From the back at a distance, however, they are next to each other with Merry on the right. While there are some shots in which they are both moving around, accounting for the difference, here they are both stationary. Extended DVD, Disc 2
Continuity mistake: In the shot where you see Gandalf, Eomer and the Rohirrim riders appearing in the East, you can see that the Uruk-hai's shadow is pointing towards Gandalf, i.e. towards the direction the sun is supposedly coming from.(From the viewpoint of Gandalf and Rohirrim, as they ride down the hill towards the Uruk-hai.)
Continuity mistake: When Sam (in voice over) says, "But in the end, it's only a passing thing..." we see Gandalf's hair down and messy, during the battle. Just as Éomer is riding past Gandalf and the others, shouting, "Stay out of the forest!" notice Gandalf's hair in the side shot, it is neat, and pulled back. In the next close-up of Gandalf, looking at the Uruk-hai running into the forest, his hair is down again.
Continuity mistake: While looking at the Haradrim, in this first front shot Frodo says, "We've got to get moving. Come on, Sam," Frodo starts to back away and rise. Sam grabs his hand and pulls him, saying, "Mr Frodo," and Frodo's position is farther behind Sam. In the next back shot Sam and Frodo are lying evenly, side by side. Then in the next front shot as Sam says, "It's an Oliphaunt," Frodo's position is behind Sam and he is crouched higher than him too.
Continuity mistake: At the Armory, in the first close-up of Aragorn, he looks at a sword in his hand and tosses it down. The right sleeve of his coat is ripped almost all the way around at the seam by his shoulder, and the sleeve is folded over where it's ripped. When he tosses the sword down, there is a glimpse of his left sleeve, and it too is ripped and folded over at the seam. In his next close-up, the right sleeve's seam is ripped much less and it isn't folded over. The left sleeve however, is ripped like in the earlier shot. This is not a case of shot flipping.
Continuity mistake: When the ladders are being raised to the Keep, we first see a wide shot of two ladders going up. The one on the right reaches the top of the Keep first. The next three quick shots show it differently. In the second quick shot, there are two ladders at the top already and a third ladder on their right, that is just hitting the top of the Keep. All those ladders are close together. Then just after Legolas grabs an arrow, the next far shot of the Keep shows two ladders spaced far apart, with a third one in the middle being raised. This is the one that Legolas causes to fall with his arrow.
Continuity mistake: After Haldir is struck in the back by an Uruk he falls to his knees dying. Aragorn runs up and grabs him but sees the elf is dead after his head falls back and lowers his body down before running off again. But he lets go of Haldir just above the ground and instead of just falling the rest of the way down the supposedly dead elf lowers his own head to the ground.
Continuity mistake: Having seen the attack on the Haradrim, Frodo says, "Come on, Sam," and he is seized by one of Faramir's men. In the next shot, Sam is getting up off his right knee, that having been the place where they were lying and hiding to see the Haradrim and Mûmakil. The edge shown in this shot has green plants growing alongside, and the bush to the right of the edge is also very different than earlier shots. This edge does not look anything like the two different edges shown, in the earlier shots of them leaning over. This is now the third edge being offered.
Continuity mistake: When Sam lifts Frodo and says, "That there's some good in this world Mr Frodo and it's worth fighting for", Sam's face is wet with tears and his eyes are red and teary. In the next shot, when Faramir walks over, Sam's eyes are still red and teary and his face is still wet, but in the next shot, when Faramir kneels, Sam's face is dry and his eyes are no longer red and teary.
Continuity mistake: When King Theoden, Aragorn, Gimli and what's left of the army are trying to stop the Uruk-hai from breaking in, Aragorn says, "Tell the women and children to head for the mountain pass.." and pushes Gamling toward the back entrance, so Gamling is in front of him. Then Theoden says his line about so much death and the next shot shows Aragorn and Gamling turning their heads. Now, Aragorn is closer to the back entrance than Gamling.
Continuity mistake: When the Uruk-hai are sending the three huge ladders up on to the Keep, watch the last one just before Legolas cuts the rope that is pulling it up. The ladder has just passed the 90 degree/vertical point. Naturally, after that it starts gaining speed as it falls. Then it cuts to Legolas, who waits a second or two before firing his arrow. That would be plenty of time for the ladder to pass the point of no return, and hit the wall, so it would not have mattered if Legolas had shot it or not it would still have reached the Keep.
Continuity mistake: When Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli meet Gandalf the White in the Fangorn Forrest, Gandalf says that Hobbits whose tracks they are tracking "Have passed this way the day before yesterday." It cannot be so, because the day starts when Gimli says, "Three days' and nights' pursuit," Legolas says that blood has been spilled last night, and later Eomer confirms that they slaughtered the band of Uruk-hai during that night. Therefore, Hobbits could only have passed that way yesterday, more correctly during the night. Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas meet Gandalf immediately after they enter the forest, so it must be the same day (we know this because the forest is unknown to them; remember Aragorn telling Gimli to lower his axe). However, it fits in Gandalf's speech in Fangorn so beautifully, so it must be deliberate.
Continuity mistake: In the stable, just as Aragorn takes Brego's lead rope from the Rohan, in the shot of Brego moving backward, the two knots at his halter are seen. In the next shot as Aragorn continues soothing Brego he moves in closer, the two knots seen differ from the previous shot and there is no excess rope on Brego's left knot. However as Aragorn unties the knot on Brego's right, the excess rope of his left knot is seen, which differs from the second shot.
Continuity mistake: When Theoden is going to kill Grima on the stone stairway, behind him are Gandalf and three of four guards that take up the whole width of the stair way. Right when Theoden is about to strike, Aragorn pops out of nowhere and stops him. How could he have gotten there in time if we didn't see him push through the other guards, or see him behind them?
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf and the rest of the riders on horseback are watching the Uruk-hai retreating into the trees, in Gandalf's close-up, sitting directly behind Gandalf's horse is another rider on a horse. That rider has a silver helmet with the decorative high ridges in the center. However, right before that shot is shown, there is a wide shot of all their backs and a rider with that kind of helmet is not sitting directly behind Gandalf's horse, but rather further behind him, way off to his right. The close-up shot immediately followed the wide shot. Extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: While Sam is cooking the rabbit stew, Frodo goes to his pack lying beside the broken stone statue to take out the plates. In Frodo's close-ups the trees and bushes near the statue are positioned differently and some are even different than the trees and bushes in the wide shots.
Continuity mistake: During the battle of Helm's Deep, a line of Uruk-hai with shields and a battering ram march up the causeway to the Keep. Then the wall below is breached, and in one shot of the wall exploding you can see, off to the right, that the Uruk-hai have reached the top of the causeway and are just standing there. Then in the close-up of the Uruk-hai on the causeway, they haven't reached the top yet.
Revealing mistake: When the camera moves into the "Seeing Stone" and pans up to reveal "the great eye," the entire tower was a miniature. It's not that noticeable, but what really makes it a mistake is the cotton balls used to make smoke on the smaller towers leading up to the big one. (It sticks out so obviously that one must ask, why did they CG the orcs at the bottom of the miniature, but use cotton balls for the smoke instead of CGing it?)
Other mistake: When Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf are at Edoras and are first entering Theoden's hall, watch the right side of the screen as Wormtongue says, "I told you to take the wizard's staff..." Legolas delivers an uppercut to a guard, but his arm goes way above his head. Furthermore, the punching sound effect is not heard until his arm is way over his head. Legolas is as tall as the guards and his fist would have stopped as soon as it hit the guard's face. There is no way the guard can be that tall.
Continuity mistake: When Legolas and another Elf are dragging Gimli back to the Keep, in the front view the Elf's quiver is empty. Yet in the next shot from behind, the Elf has many arrows in the quiver on his back. The arrows would be seen from the front, because they are way above his shoulder in the back shot.
Deliberate mistake: In the first close-up shot of the scene, Aragorn is walking and talking to 'Legolas'. Legolas' back is shown, as Aragorn is speaking to him. At a certain point, 'Legolas' turns his head to his left and in this close-up it is very clear that it is not Orlando Bloom, but his body double, Morgan. Extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: At the Dead Marshes after Gollum rescues Frodo, in the next opening shot while Sam sleeps we see the pot and pans lying on the ground near Sam's head. When he hears the Nazgul he wakes up and some of those things lying near his head earlier are not there in this shot. This has nothing to do with camera angle.
Deliberate mistake: When Faramir is about to release Frodo and Sam, not only are the Elven brooches the wrong way round, as someone else has noted, but the whole scene is flipped. You can tell because the leather straps that hold their baggage are the wrong way round as well. Faramir's shots go from normal to flipped a few times, when he walks over, kneels and then rises.
Continuity mistake: When we first see Legolas on the wall with Gimli, Legolas is gripping his bow, left fist over right fist. Next shot as Aragorn walks over, his left hand grips the bow lower but his right hand is gripping the front of his quiver strap. Next shot, Aragorn is beside him, his left hand is much higher on the bow now. As Aragorn leaves, Legolas' left hand is lower on the bow again and his right hand is again gripping the front of his quiver strap.
Continuity mistake: Just before the trees start killing the Uruk-hai, we see the backs of Gandalf and the rest of the heroes on horseback as they're watching the forest. Gandalf is holding his staff up in his right hand. Next close-up shot, he's lowering the staff in his left hand. Extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: In the extended DVD, right before Faramir lets Frodo, Sam, and Gollum go, he grabs Gollum around the neck. The problem is, he grabs Gollum from behind, so his hand is on the back of Gollum's neck. He then pushes Gollum up against the wall, but suddenly his hand is in the front. I've watched this closely, and there isn't enough time for Faramir to twist his hand around.
Continuity mistake: At the flooded Isengard, the first shots of Pip and Merry are in front of Saruman's storeroom. Floating in the water, directly behind them are a large barrel and a large crate. In the shots of them turning to enter the storeroom, the floating barrel and crate are gone. Extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: Just as Éomer rides past Gandalf, Aragorn and the rest of the riders that are on horseback, Éomer yells, "Stay out of the forest!" and when he yells, "Keep away from the trees!" on the left of the screen, he and his horse have turned around and are now pointing towards Gandalf and Aragorn. In the very next shot, a close-up, he is facing the opposite way and is just then turning his horse around, to face out, towards the Uruk-hai running into the forest.
Other mistake: Before the battle of Helm's Deep, all of the Elves are positioned along the top of the wall. Their waists are right up against the shorter wall to protect them somewhat from incoming crossbow bolts. The Uruk-hai are heard arriving from a distance and Aragorn walks out a few feet in front of them to survey the battlefield. How could he walk out in front of them when they were positioned right up against the edge of the shorter wall?
Continuity mistake: At Edoras, standing on the steps of the Golden Hall, Hama says, "I can not allow you before Theoden King so armed...By order of Grima Wormtongue." Then Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli disarm themselves and give their weapons to the guards. After requesting not to be parted from his 'walking stick', the next wide shot shows them walking towards the door, with the guards at the sides holding the weapons of the four visitors. Yet in the very next shot from behind, though it still shows them walking towards the door, the guards at the sides changed their positions, note the ornate columns. For example, in the first shot, to the right of Aragorn standing near the steps, is the guard holding Aragorn's sword, bow and arrows. In the second shot from behind, that guard is now on the other side of the column, closer to the door on Aragorn's right, standing next to another guard, who's holding Gandalf's sword and Legolas' bow.
Revealing mistake: The braids over Legolas' ears on his scalp, change drastically in position, shape, amount of hair that's braided and how it is braided, as does the amount of his side hair that is swept up into the back braid, in consecutive shots! The hair differs considerably in the following shots. In the armory, when Legolas and Aragorn argue and when Legolas apologizes to Aragorn, for despairing. When Legolas watches Aragorn hugging Haldir. When Legolas stands with Aragorn and Gimli on the Deeping Wall, awaiting the Uruk-hai. As Legolas lets loose the arrows towards the Berserker Uruk-hai. In these two shots too. First, standing outside of Fangorn with Aragorn and Gimli (flipped shot). Then, in Fangorn, saying, "This forest is old..."(flipped shot).

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Frodo slides down the hill to get to Sam, when he reaches him, in this first shot, it is open ground, and very rocky around them. Frodo then conceals themselves under his cloak. When the two men are standing near them, looking around, the area behind Frodo and Sam is very steep, with a few large boulders right next to them. After Frodo lifts up his cloak, and starts to pull Sam's hand, the area is the same as in the first shot. AS he's pulling Sam's hand, the area and background around them, changes yet again, in this last close-up of them.
Revealing mistake: Sam says "There's only one way to eat a brace of coneys" and in the next close-up, Sam stirs the stew. The rolled up blanket is behind the hanging pot, which means it's on Sam's right. In the next three shots, Sam's pack is behind the pot, not the rolled blanket, to Sam's right. Then, in the next close-up of the pot, it's the very same close-up shot as before, only it's been flipped, and the rolled blanket is there, near the pot again, this time to Sam's left.
Revealing mistake: In the shot where the Rohan refugees are heading into Helm's Deep, the scale of the shot is wrong. On the right side of the screen, the refugees walk up the ramp into the gatehouse and on the left side of the screen, the Deeping Wall extends, with figures moving along the wall. The Deeping wall should be about even with ramp up to the Keep, if not a little bit forward, which means the figures along the wall should be at least the same size as the figures walking up the ramp. However, the figures along the wall, are much smaller, as if the Deeping Wall was pushed back further than the ramp. The right side shot was filmed as live action and the left side shot was filmed using the miniature of Helm's Deep and then the shots were merged together.
Continuity mistake: When Sam first reaches into his pack, in the close-up, he takes out the lembas bread and says, "Oh yes. Lovely", one corner of the leaf is sticking up. As he continues to say, "Lembas bread", in this wide shot, all the corners of the leaf are now down and completely covering the lembas bread.
Revealing mistake: When Treebeard throws Merry and Pippin they fall flat on the ground, at the feet of the White Wizard. In the shot when they both look up as they lie there, there are two circular bare earth mounds, right between each pair of their feet. These round areas of dark earth are surrounded by earth that is covered in leaves and bramble everywhere else. It is obviously where the actors' feet were positioned at the start of this shot, when they threw themselves to the ground.
Continuity mistake: When Brego finds Aragorn at the riverbank, he puts his head to him and the horse is only wearing a halter, with no bit in his mouth and a rope hanging from the halter. In the close up shots that follow, in particular when Aragorn views Helm's Deep, obviously the rope is being used as a rein, but we can clearly see that the horse now has a bit in his mouth, where there was none before.
00:21:15 - 00:44:50
Continuity mistake: Gollum brings two rabbits and drops them onto Frodo's lap. When Gollum takes one from Frodo's lap, in the close-up the head of the remaining rabbit is lying on Frodo's right leg. In the wide shot when Sam takes the rabbit from Gollum and pushes him away, the second rabbit is lying on Frodo's lap differently than the close-up. Also in the close-ups of Gollum we see the structure behind Gollum that has Sam's gear lying beside it. In the wide shots some of the gear is arranged differently.
Continuity mistake: In Osgiliath, when Sam suggests that Frodo should use the ring to disappear, not only has the background changed, as has already been noticed, but Sam quickly changes position when Faramir enters. He is not left of Frodo anymore but right of him (seen from the viewer).
Continuity mistake: When speaking of Merry and Pippin, a certain Orc says, "What about them? They're fresh." This Orc's face has very distinctive marbled skin coloring. After Grishnak says, "What about their legs? They don't need those..." when that other Orc says, "Just a mouthful," before Uglúk cuts off his head, the skin coloring on his face is quite different. (These were shot at different times.)
Add timeSuper Grover
Continuity mistake: Faramir hits one of the Haradrim riding the Mûmak with an arrow and he falls. As he hits the ground, in the background are Frodo and Sam. Sam's cloak is not draped over his left shoulder in this shot. In the very next close-up, Sam's cloak is draped over both shoulders.
Revealing mistake: Soon after the Uruk-hai breach the wall with the ladders, Aragorn uses his sword to slice the leg off of one of them. In the wide shot, the Uruk has leg guards on, but in the close-up of the leg being cut off at the knee, no guards are on that leg. Also, visible in the close-up, it is obvious that the 'leg' is prepped to be cut in half.
Revealing mistake: During the destruction at Isengard, Treebeard says, "Break the dam. Release the river." While he says that, there is a close-up of the dam wall as the Ent pulls away the wood blockades. We see the water starting to spurt between certain stones. Then there is a wide shot of the area, and in this shot, the water does not start to spurt between the same stones or in the same manner as in the previous close-up.
Continuity mistake: In Osgiliath, when Sam says, "I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here," he is standing up right next to the wall. In the next shot, of Sam's back, he is standing a few feet away from the wall. In the next shot, he's next to the wall, and then starts to walk to the archway, for his 'Sam' speach.
Continuity mistake: When the Uruk-hai slam into the chamber door with the battering ram, just before Theoden yells, "Forth Eorlingas!" we can see the damage done to the wood on the right door on the outside. As the Uruks start to run in, we also see some different damage to the metal trim on that door. However, as Theoden rides past that door on his horse, the damage to the door is gone!
Continuity mistake: Frodo lies down to look at the Southrons. Sam and Gollum come close, and crouch alongside him. In these first two shots, the ground beneath them is uneven, has patches of green grass, bramble, and some small green leaves near Frodo's fingers. After a cutaway, in the next shot of Frodo, Sam and Gollum, they are lying on even ground with yellow dry flat grass. Then Sam says, "No one at home would believe this," and the ground is now the same as in the first shot.
Revealing mistake: During the Warg battle, as Aragorn slices off the head of a Warg rider, in the background on the hill there are two Rohan riders on horseback, one on a brown horse, one on a white horse, riding down the hill chasing after Orcs on foot. There are many shots after, including Aragorn throwing the spear into the Warg saving Gimli, and Theoden stabbing the Warg in his mouth. The next shots of Aragorn are when he stabs a Warg rider. The background plate is the same hill and the same two Rohan riders on horseback are still riding down the hill chasing after the Orcs on foot. Obviously these two pieces of footage were shot consecutively and were cut and separated, and other various shots were inserted in between them.
00:11:35 - 00:12:20Super Grover
Continuity mistake: Frodo, Sam and Gollum are resting at the Dead Marshes. When the camera is in front of Frodo the sunlight is on Frodo's left side and on Sam's face. However, when the camera angle is behind Frodo's right shoulder the sunlight is on Frodo's right side. The right shoulder shot is shown six times and it goes back and forth between both shots.
Audio problem: When Gimli says the line "Helms Deep! They flee to the mountains when they should stand and fight! Who will defend them if not their king?", Legolas, Aragorn, Gimli and Gandalf are walking towards the stables. Gimli's lips are not mouthing any of the lines. This is because it is the scale double of Gimli walking with the three other actors and John Rhys-Davies added the dialogue in ADR later.
Continuity mistake: When Boromir first goes over and hugs Denethor, Boromir puts both of his arms under both of Denethor's arms for the hug, as seen from Faramir's POV. In the next shot, from behind Denethor, we now see Boromir's left arm is on Denethor's right shoulder and Boromir's right arm is under Denethor's left arm. Extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: When Aragorn first arrives in Helm's Deep and is confronted by Legolas, there are three close-up shots of Legolas saying, "Le abdollen" (you're late), "You look terrible," and then smiling. The bow visible behind his right shoulder appears to be his old Mirkwood bow. It is dark golden-brown, smooth, with a black bowstring. The one Galadriel gave him is the same color as his hair, elaborately carved, and has a light-colored bowstring. (for comparison check 1:43:20, where they are in the armory, and the bow should look even darker... but the white bowstring's visible there.) Continuity is screwed up as well, because in the shots between the close-ups of this conversation, where both Aragorn and Legolas are shown, the oddly-carved ends of his Lorien-bow are visible.
Continuity mistake: Gollum's hands are bound behind his back, during Sam's speech. After Sam's speech, Faramir walks over and while he's speaking to Frodo and Sam, Gollum is shown rubbing his hands. Faramir has not yet said, "Then it is forfeit. Release them." Gollum's ties would not yet have been cut. As explained on the commentary, they needed shots of Gollum for this sequence, so they pinched them from other moments, and inserted them here.

Continuity mistake: When Legolas places the Evenstar into the palm of Aragorn's hand, the chain is all coiled up. Yet when Aragorn opens up his hand, the Evenstar and the chain are lying in his palm neatly and flat. Some of these shots with Aragorn and Legolas were filmed over two and half years apart.
Continuity mistake: Standing in Fangorn Forest, Legolas says, "The trees are speaking to each other," and then Aragorn says, "Gimli. Lower your axe." In the wide shot as Aragorn says, "Gimli," the trees behind and to the left of Gimli are different in this first shot then in the very next shot when he continues, "Lower your axe." The trees in the second shot are also seen when Gimli first draws his axe.
Revealing mistake: In the two scenes, when Frodo and Sam are both up on the rocks and later, down below, hiding out of view, the Black Gate is in front of them. Earlier, is the view inside the gate. The two Trolls are pulling and pushing the wood 'pulley', to open the gate, while walking on the tall ramp that curves around. When the gate is open, that ramp should be in full view, from the angle that Frodo and Sam are positioned, but it is not.

Continuity mistake: When Faramir and his men are looking at the map of Middle-Earth in Henneth Annûn, Minas Morgul is not shown anywhere on map. It should be at the end of the road leading east out of Osgiliath. This leads us to believe there's an non-fortified road leading straight into Mordor.
Continuity mistake: Faramir captures Sam and Frodo. Faramir goes over to the dead body, and says, "His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem," and rolls over one of the Haradrim with his foot. The dead man is lying with his face towards the ground. In the earlier shot, when he fell off the Mûmak and landed behind Frodo and Sam, the right side of his face is lying on the ground. It is the same man in both shots.

Continuity mistake: When the Uruk-hai run through the rock canyon carrying Merry and Pippin, it's obviously the same rock canyon that Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli run through when Aragorn says, "Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall." However, when the Uruks run through it, many false rock formations and extra running footage were added which not only changes the appearance of part of the canyon between the two shots, but also makes it seem like a longer distance through the same canyon.
00:14:40 - 00:18:00Super Grover
Revealing mistake: In Emyn Muil, just after Frodo says, You will lead us to the Black Gate," Sam and Frodo are following after Gollum. You see Frodo, with Sam trailing, come around a large rock formation from the left of the screen, then Frodo passes a large round boulder on his right and starts to run down a slope towards the camera. As Sam passes the same large boulder on his right, you can see it shake from him brushing against it.
Continuity mistake: After the sweeping pan of Edoras, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn ride up towards the Golden Hall. In the first shot, behind them is a wood fence with a wood ladder, leading up to a tower and seen behind Legolas are two girls standing on stone steps. Also seen in this first shot, to Gandalf's right, is a man with a white beard, hooded shirt and long vest. In the very next shot, is the same bearded man (use zoom) wearing the same clothes, standing near a cart. In the next shot, the first close-up of Aragorn, to his left, are a woman (partially seen) and two men wearing hats, standing under a wooden structure. Aragorn looks up at the Golden Hall, and sees Éowyn. The next shot of Aragorn, behind him to his left, are the same wood fence, ladder, tower and two girls on the stone steps, as in the first shot of them all. As they continue to ride up, Gimli remarks, "You'll find more cheer in a graveyard." Just after Aragorn looks up at the Golden Hall again, in the next close-up of Aragorn, to his left, are the same woman and two men standing under the same wood structure, as in the first close-up of Aragorn!!
Factual error: When the refugees from Edoras are on the move to Helm's Deep, against the mountain range backdrop, they are going the wrong direction for a mountain range viewed from the north, where Rohan and camera are presumed to be. They should go from left (east) from Edoras to right (west) to Helm's Deep, but instead we see them going right to left, i.e. west to east. This occurs in two long-range wide-field shots.
Continuity mistake: After Aragorn says to Haleth, "Give me your sword," in the wide shot we see that Aragorn is sitting on the tail of his coat and the coat is draped down the steps under his legs. When Aragorn rises, just after Haleth says, "...They say that it is hopeless," we see that the coat is not draped down the steps under his legs, as in the earlier shot. It is not the legs' shadow.
Continuity mistake: When Aragorn fights with the Orc riding the Warg, Aragorn knocks the Orc off and he falls to the ground. Then the Warg tumbles off the cliff with Aragorn. If you notice, the Orc falls a fair distance from the cliff, but when Legolas and Gimli ask him what happened, he is much closer to the cliff edge.
00:12:45 - 00:13:40
Continuity mistake: Throughout the movie, the size of Gimli changes several times. Upon entering Edoras, his height is just under Legolas' shoulder. When the Uruk-hai attack Helm's Deep and they are waiting atop the wall, you can hardly see Gimli's helmet, but all of the other characters (for example Legolas) stand there behind the wall that reaches the height of their kidney-area.
Deliberate mistake: Legolas leaps onto Arod and as he rides, both of his hands are clean. After they've just clashed into the Warg riders, in the close-up of Legolas as he releases his arrow there are dark smudges visible on Legolas' fingers and knuckles on his right hand. In the close-up of Legolas as he lets loose the arrow into the Warg that is about to attack Gimli, we see both of his hands are smudge free. This shot is flipped, so the right hand that was previously smudged is now the left hand, which is clean anyway.
Continuity mistake: At night at the Dead Marshes when Frodo is lying down he is holding the Ring in his hand and he's stroking the Ring with his middle finger. In the very next close-up he's stroking the Ring with his index finger then in the next wide shot he's stroking the Ring with his middle finger again.
Continuity mistake: On the way to Helm's Deep, when they stop for the night, Éowyn offers Aragorn some stew. As Aragorn is putting the spoon into his mouth, in the wide shot, there is a piece of 'white food' hanging over the side of the bowl near his right hand, Aragorn's hair is messy, blowing on his forehead and his hair is put behind his left ear. In the following close-up shot of his reaction to the taste of the stew, the 'white food' isn't hanging off the side of the bowl, his hair isn't as messy on his forehead and he has more hair in front of his ear now.
Continuity mistake: At Helm's Deep, in this opening wide shot, soldiers call out, "Come on, keep moving. Quickly now," as the people walk towards the Glittering Caves. We see the soldiers standing up against the wall, as the people go past. Next, in a side close-up, Aragorn talks with Legolas as they walk past the soldiers, and other people. In the next shot from the front, as the conversation continues, they're still walking past the guards and people. In the second and third shots the people around them differ and in all three shots the guards differ too.
Continuity mistake: Elves, as can be seen all through the battle of Helm's Deep, carry their sword and arrows on their backs, protruding some distance above their shoulders. When the elves arrive at Helm's Deep, however - none of them appear to be carrying a sword (it is possible that the sword could be sheathed at the waist, under their robes, but it seems unlikely that they'd change it to a back-sheath later on), nor do they have any arrows for the bows that they are carrying.
Deliberate mistake: At Helm's Deep, Theoden says, "I want every man and strong lad..." behind them is Gimli, who has a conspicuously reddish face, and his beard is split down the middle into two braids. Éowyn confronts Aragorn, she apologizes and hurries off, walking between Legolas and Gimli, who looks the same as in the earlier shot. It's obviously Brett (scale double) in both shots, the beard with its two thin braids are completely different when next we see Gimli, in a close-up at the armory. This time the beard is full, with hair between the two very thick braids, and his face is a normal color.

Continuity mistake: Merry and Pippin run into Fangorn Forest and drop down on the ground. First there is a wide shot of Pippin falling, then there's a close-up of them, and last there's an extreme wide shot of the area. The area that Merry and Pippin are lying in is different in all three shots.
Continuity mistake: The first two shots of people leaving Edoras are shown, and in the wide shot Éothain and Freda are seen on their horse, as well as the people in front and in back of them. Next are shots of Theoden and Gamling speaking, and the Aragorn and Éowyn confrontation. Then in the next shots the people are still seen leaving Edoras, including Éothain and Freda with the same people in front and in back of them as was seen in the much earlier shot!

Revealing mistake: The very first shot of the Uruk-hai running through the rock canyon is the exact same shot that is shown in the last shot of this scene, just after Pippin bites the Lorien brooch off his cloak. Even though in between those two shots, all the Uruk-hai have been running until they meet up with the Orcs. In between those two shots, the rock formation shown behind the Uruk who lifts his fist up is also quite different in the next successive shot, when the Orcs approach the Uruks.
00:14:40 - 00:16:50Super Grover
Continuity mistake: When Sam, Frodo and Gollum arrive at the Black Gate, they hide at the top of the cliff looking down on the soldiers approaching Mordor. As the ground crumbles beneath Sam, the soldiers are some distance from the Gate's entrance, the shot switches as he falls then quickly resumes its original position. Yet the soldiers have now entered the Gate, all within the space of a split second.
Revealing mistake: Éomer yells, "To the King!" at Helm's Deep and the Rohirrim begin to ride down, towards the Uruk-hai. In the very first wide shot of Gandalf, starting to lead them down, there is a clear reflection of three of the riders and their horses, shown on the ground.
Continuity mistake: After riding down the Causeway at Helm's Deep, Aragorn looks up and sees Gandalf. In the first shot his hair and face are very sweaty and shiny. In the second shot when he says, "Gandalf," his face is dry and sweat free. His hair is different in both shots too. The second shot was pinched from the earlier scene in the Keep when he looks up at the window remembering Gandalf's words, "Look to my coming." Confirmed on commentary.
Continuity mistake: Before Gandalf makes his reappearance, when Gimli says "The air is so close in here" he has two axes at his waist, one in hand (and one on his back as seen earlier). The axe on his waist at his left has a solid head. Later, when Aragorn tells him to lower his axe, one is missing from his waist. It reappears in his hand just as Aragorn starts to draw his sword. Then, just as the three are about to attack the wizard, Gimli doesn't appear to have an axe in his left hand. Yet, in the subsequent cut, he throws one with his left hand. Then, when Gandalf reveals himself and Gimli bows his head, the solid-bladed axe appears to have moved to the right-hand side of Gimli's waist (as they cower in Gandalf's brightness).
00:39:55 - 00:42:00
Revealing mistake: Legolas runs down the hill to kill the Orc scout. As he is slicing the Orc's throat, in the close-up of Legolas' blade, one frame shows the position of the sharp edge right up against the Orc's throat, but the next frame shows that the sharp edge of the blade was turned away from the Orc's neck, just before the slicing, so as not to harm the Orc actor. This can only be seen frame by frame.
Continuity mistake: When the three companions first meet Gandalf, after Aragorn drops his sword, Gimli lowers his axe and holds it by his right hand. When the shot changes, Gimli holds it by two hands and in a ready position. The same thing with Legolas, his bow changes position, and Aragorn with his legs.
Revealing mistake: When Gollum brings the two rabbits, he drops them onto Frodo's lap, and Frodo is leaning up against one of the broken stone structures. After Frodo opens his eyes, the stone structure behind him vibrates when he moves a couple of times. This structure should be way too heavy to jiggle when Frodo moves.
Continuity mistake: At Osgiliath, when Frodo first brings Sting to Sam's throat, in the first close-up the chain is not caught up on the vest button. When Frodo falls back and drops Sting, the Ring's chain is hooked up on the button. The shot changes to Sam then quickly back to Frodo, and Frodo says, "I can't do this Sam" and the chain is no longer hung up on the button.
Continuity mistake: Faramir and his men capture Frodo and Sam, and Sam is thrown to the ground. In these shots, Sam's cloak is lying straight under him, as can be seen when he says, "Wait. We're innocent travelers." When one of Faramir's men grabs Sam's shirt to pull him up, his cloak is lying on the ground, up near his shoulder out to his right. Sam has not moved, Faramir's man had a blade to his throat.
Continuity mistake: At the end, it shows Sam and Frodo walking through a forest. The very first shot of that scene shows Sam saying, "I wonder if we'll ever be put into songs or tales." In the background, through the trees, you can see the city of Osgiliath. Then it shows Frodo, with Sam in the background, and Frodo asks, "What?" In the next shot they are way further into the forest and you can not see Osgiliath.
Continuity mistake: At the end of the film, when the heroes of the big battle are watching the lightning over Mordor, while Gandalf says the words, "The battle for Helm's Deep is over", over Legolas' right shoulder is a far view of the Deeping Wall and the Causeway. There is no break in the wall, or ladders at the wall, nor are there any bodies anywhere on the Causeway or otherwise.
Continuity mistake: In Faramir's hideout behind the waterfall, Sam tells Frodo, "Use the Ring, Mr Frodo, just this once..." When the camera is on Frodo alone, the camera lighting shines on Frodo's right side, with his left in shadow. When the angle of the camera changes to show both he and Sam, Frodo's left side is then lit.
Continuity mistake: At the battle of Helm's Deep, after the wall is breached we see the water flow out. Then there is an aerial shot of orcs entering the pool of water. It cuts to a closeup of Aragorn lying on the ground just in front of the pool, a very short distance from the orcs. He should have been visible in the aerial shot.
Visible crew/equipment: When the wounded Aragorn gets up on Brego the next shot shows him ride towards the sun, and his shadow behind him. The same thing goes for the camera crews shadow (you may have to play it in slow motion in order to see the large shadow). The shadow of the crew is seen at the very beginning of this shot. And there are no rocks beside the camera because the camera moves 180 degrees to show open terrain.
Continuity mistake: When Faramir and his Lieutenant are looking at the map, just after it's been unfolded, the Lieutenant puts his right hand out and points on the map with his right hand. In the following close-up, his left hand is doing the pointing on the map. All the close-up shots of the map were added later during pickups, to show more clearly where various characters are.
Continuity mistake: When Sam, Frodo and Gollum are watching the Haradrim and Oliphaunts from the hill, the sun is shining on the left side of Frodo's face and on the right side of Gollum's face. In fact, throughout the sequence, the sun's position seems to change quite a bit, even though the scene only lasts a few seconds.
Deliberate mistake: During Theoden's attack, Arwen on a white horse is visible in about 3 frames. It was confirmed on the Commentary that Arwen took part in the Helm's Deep scenes as originally filmed, but was cut from them later, but apparently not completely, because she is seen in a number of shots. During the beginning of the attack, when the riders are still in the fortress, several shots end abruptly when only the white horse (different from Arod, its head is not covered with protection) is visible and not the rider. She is also seen riding down the causeway, in front of Legolas. Her hair was colored blonde, her body and clothing were shaded and colored green, to disguise her.
Continuity mistake: When Gamling is fighting the Warg scout, after Hama's death, Legolas jumps off the high rocks, and starts running towards the Orc. There are high rock ridges behind and to the left of Legolas. As soon as the Orc scout falls to the ground, in the next shot of Legolas, as he runs toward the Orc, that background is flat and there is only one rock ridge directly behind Legolas.
Continuity mistake: Gimli yells, "Aragorn!" then as he jumps into the air, on that same wall, is a dead body hanging over the edge, next to the smoldering lantern. In the earlier shot, just before Aragorn lifts his head down below, as the camera panned over the Deeping Wall, there was no dead body lying at the top near the edge, next to a smoldering lantern.
Deliberate mistake: As Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli gear up for the battle of Helm's Deep in the Keep, Gimli puts on chainmail. After he says it's too tight in the chest, you see a back shot of Gimli standing facing Aragorn and Legolas. This man is obviously a scale double, as the body and posture are wrong.
Continuity mistake: At Edoras, as Éowyn says, "Now the Wildmen are moving through the Westfold, burning as they go, rick, cot and tree," Aragorn and Gimli sit at a table across the room. In this shot, the candle on their table has drippings going down the side of the candle. When Aragorn says, "You have two thousand good men..." the candle is taller and does not have those drippings. Aragorn says, "Open war is upon you..." and the candle now has more drippings than in that first shot.
Revealing mistake: When Theoden says, "They will break upon this fortress like water on rock," the camera is in a crane shot which slowly creeps up, becoming a medium close-up of Aragorn. As the camera flies over the front wall of Helm's Deep in the shot where Theoden delivers his line, look down into the deepest level of the castle towards the left of the screen. Rohan citizens are bustling and moving. If you watch closely, you can see the lowest level of the castle jump and shake in the shot. This is because that lowest level wasn't there in reality and it was added in the computer. (Probably can be seen only in the Widescreen version).
Continuity mistake: In the extended edition of The Two Towers, during the 'Elvish Rope' scene near the beginning, the mist disappears and reappears between shots. When Frodo falls and lands at the bottom of the ravine, there is lots of thick, white mist swirling around, but when it cuts to a wider shot, it has nearly all disappeared within a second. In the next close-up shot of Frodo, it has reappeared again.
Other mistake: In this scene, Legolas says, "The Uruks turn Northeast. They're taking the Hobbits to Isengard." This is a mistake because Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas are chasing the Uruks on a westerly course towards Isengard. If the Uruks had turned Northeast, they would have almost doubled back on the trio. (This is in the "Special Extended Edition" DVD.) The Uruks were taking the closest way to Isengard, across terrain, not traveling by common roads. In the book they traveled without rest. There's no reason to believe they would have diverted from their Western course to Northeast temporarily, that would have slowed them down.
Character mistake: When the Rohirrim are preparing for the Helm's Deep battle, a man is shown sharpening a sword on a grindstone. He is doing it wrong, but it is the way that most people think is the right way. The stone should be spinning so that the blade is "shaving" it, even though that seems like it would dull the edge.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf, Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli step inside Meduseld (the scene where they arrive at Edoras in Rohan), as they are approaching Theoden the angle of Gandalf's staff changes. It appears from the shots taken at the front to be at an angle so that Wormtongue doesn't see he's still carrying it, but when cutting to the shots from behind the group his staff is almost vertical.
