Revealing mistake: At the beginning of the scene near the end of the movie with Lucius Malfoy fuming at Dumbledore in his office, Malfoy's hair is fanned back behind his shoulders. The lighting in the room illuminates the back of his neck, where you can see his real, short brown hair.
Visible crew/equipment: Rushing to make Hogwarts Express at the train station, the shot opens as the camera pans Ginny's trunk and TWO marks come into view. While Ginny and Mr. Weasley push her trolley, Mr. Weasley (Mark Williams) is cued and begins to say, "10:58, come on, come on!" just as the actor hits his tape MARK on the ground below, while Percy's (Chris Rankin) trolley hits its tape mark, so Harry is visible behind him, and cues Mr. Weasley to continue speaking. In the shot when Mrs. Weasley says, "Okay" for Ginny to go and in the shot as Harry says, "Let's go," their marks are obviously gone. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Visible crew/equipment: After Harry climbs up the side of Salazar Slytherine's stone head in the Chamber of Secrets, the first time the Basilisk slams his face into the stone in the wide shot, the bottom of a crew member's denim pant leg and shoe are bizarrely visible lying on a work surface, beneath the stone head's beard! The digital editors overlooked this one. (Visible on fullscreen DVD.)
Continuity mistake: In the Quidditch scene, Harry breaks his right arm and cradles it on his chest, but when he is lying on the ground after he falls off his broom, he then leans directly on it when he sits up to get away from the Bludger. In the shot immediately afterward, he has his hand cradled in front of him again.
Visible crew/equipment: When in the Whomping Willow, Ron asks, "What's happening?" and Harry replies, "I don't know." After a few other shots, in the next two front close-ups of the boys as they scream, Harry, Ron and Hedwig are not alone in the car. A crew member's HAND is quite visible holding the bottom of Hedwig's cage and in the 2nd close-up is actually laying the cage on its side!! (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Visible crew/equipment: In Flourish and Blotts, when Lockhart says "Which, incidentally, is currently celebrating its 27th week atop the Daily Prophet bestseller list," the overhead camera pans up. As the camera passes his feet, Tom Felton's (Draco Malfoy) mark, two long strips of white tape are perfectly visible on the balcony floor where he stands.
Revealing mistake: Mrs. Weasley might as well knit like a muggle because she's not making any progress with magical knitting. In the Weasley's home and we see the magic knitting, the needle shoves into the hole, but no thread loops around and it is not advancing. The amount that has already been knitted is magic indeed since all the motion shown in the film produces no results.
Visible crew/equipment: While Harry is chased by the Bludger, Hermione says, "No! Even with a proper wand you could hit Harry..." Three shots later, as Harry passes the blue Ravenclaw tower, the back of his robe flies up and the metal base of the SEAT he sits on is perfectly visible. Some shots are filmed vertically, as he sits on the attached seat with the upright broomstick in front of him, but then edited with the background plate to look as if he is lying on the horizontal broomstick. Hence the need for a seat perpendicular to the broomstick.
Revealing mistake: Harry and Ron's trunks are being thrown out of the car and in the shot just before Harry's close-up, Ron's trunk (the other trunk says HP) slams down on the grass. The top of this trunk has a large perfectly symmetrical hole in the center with four round marks around it, which was probably involved in the throwing somehow. In the wide shot as Hedwig is being tossed out, the trunks are clearly visible and there is no hole in either, nor is there a hole in Ron's trunk at any other time.
Continuity mistake: There is a scene where Harry is talking to Ginny in the Chamber, and he is holding his arm right below the wound. In this shot Harry has blood on his hand. When Ginny notices the wound, Harry moves his hand up to cover the wound. Now his hand is spotless. In the very next shot, however, Harry has blood on his hand again.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Harry, Ron, and Hermione are drinking the Polyjuice Potion, Harry leans toward the mirror and starts to gag or something. You can clearly see his shirt is half-unbuttoned. Then they cut away to another shot farther back. Then they cut back to him, and his shirt is buttoned up, nice and neat.
Visible crew/equipment: While chasing the Snitch, Malfoy says, "You'll never catch me, Potter." In the following wide shot from the side, the SEAT support under Tom Felton's left thigh is visible, as he was filmed sitting upright for this particular shot. In the following front shot of both together, as Harry passes Malfoy, the seats that are attached to the broomsticks, to add a bit of comfort for Dan Radcliffe and Tom Felton, are visible.
Visible crew/equipment: Just arriving at Diagon Alley Hagrid says, "I was looking for Flesh-Eating Slug Repellent. They're ruining all the school cabbages." In the next shot Hermione exits the shop and runs towards Harry. On the ground is Dan Radcliffe's (Harry) red mark, which he promptly steps on just before Emma Watson (Hermoine) glances down and steps on her own black tape mark. (Visible on fullscreen DVD.)
Continuity mistake: As Ron's luggage cart/trolley slams into Harry's, Ron's trunk is visible. As Ron begins to flip over in the overhead shot, the trunk has five strips of brown trim - two on the edges and three in the middle. When Harry and Ron moan and get up, Ron's trunk now has four strips of brown trim - two on the edges and two in the middle.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Lockhart is attempting to teach students how to cast charms for disarmarment, Professor Snape casts his charms against Lockhart. Lockhart goes flying through the air, wand in hand. The movie then cuts to a shot where Lockharts wand goes flying through the air out of his hands, then cuts back to a shot from his left shoulder where he lands wand in hand. Movie then cuts back to his front left, and he gets up without wand in hand.
Continuity mistake: When Ron, Harry and Hermione drink the polyjuice potion, they all drop their glasses, smashing them onto the floor and presumably making a big mess. However, in the high angle shot looking down at Harry, there is no sign of broken glass or any potion splattered anywhere.
Visible crew/equipment: Before the car spits out Harry and Ron, when Ron's car door opens as the seat slides out, the black steel bar that his feet rest on is visible under his right foot. Then, when Harry's seat slides out to throw Hedwig out, as the cage flies out the same foot bars are seen by Ron's seat, near the door, in the background. The bars are gone when the seat slides out to toss Scabbers.
Revealing mistake: During the Quidditch match, just after the close-ups of Snape and Lucius Malfoy, there is a shot of Harry flying towards the camera, coming to stop, with Draco Malfoy flying in beside him and in this shot the goal posts cast a shadow on the sand. Malfoy remarks, "All right there, Scarhead?" and Harry looks down below at the approaching Bludger. Now in this shot, not only do the goal posts have a completely different shadow, there are no hoops at the top of the poles' shadows (while the angle might make them hard to spot, putting everything in a line, the shadows should at least thicken at the top where the hoops are).
Visible crew/equipment: Ron and Harry discuss the Basilisk's victims and, speaking of Mrs. Norris, Harry says, "There was water on the floor that night. She only saw the Basilisk's reflection." Just before Harry reads aloud from the paper again, the crew's gas torch canister with regulator and tip, that sits in a bucket beside another bucket, leans against the wall. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Revealing mistake: In the scene where the students are in Professor Lockhart's Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson you see that when Professor Lockhart lets out the Cornish Pixies, two of the pixies pull Neville Longbottom up by his ears and hang him on a chandelier. Because the pixies were computer-animated, they had to put clips behind Neville Longbottom's ears to make it look like he was being lifted up by the pixies. When he was dropped onto the chandelier by the pixies, you see his ears are still in a stretched position where the clips are.
Continuity mistake: In the shot where Dobby takes Harry's letters from his robe and tells him about why he hid them he is standing in front of the dresser, you can see that the drawers in the dresser are neatly closed (with the exception of the bottom one, which is only slightly open). However, in the next shot when Dobby runs out the door with Harry chasing after him you see the dresser again, and this time all the drawers are slightly open and uneven.
Visible crew/equipment: Ron and Harry hide under the invisibility cloak in Hagrid's hut. After Lucius Malfoy enters he starts to walk towards the invisible boys and they nervously back up. As they back up, something large comes up from the bottom of the screen in front of the boys then quickly goes back down. The boys do NOT hold anything when they go under the cloak and they do not hold anything when they come out. (Visible on fullscreen DVD.)
Continuity mistake: In the Chamber, when Harry runs from the Basilisk he ends up at a gated dead end, with steel bars that are embedded in a circular stone wall. When Harry crouches down, as the Basilisk's face nears, the manner in which the bars are embedded in the stone is actually quite different.
Continuity mistake: While Harry is communicating with Riddle's diary, after the words "let me take you back fifty years ago" appear on the page, the ink pot's lid is open as the diary pages flip and Harry lifts the book, but in the shot from Harry's POV we see the ink pot lid closed, then the lid is open again when Harry's transported.

Visible crew/equipment: When Harry and Ron are in the car fleeing from the spiders, there is a close-up of them looking towards the back of the car as they drive backwards. Two shots before the close-up of them yelling, "Wooooh!!!" there is a wide shot of the Dark Forest and the car at the top of the screen just as it starts to jump over the tree roots. In this wide shot at the bottom of the screen, the HEADS of TWO crew members are wonderfully visible! (Visible on fullscreen DVD.)
Visible crew/equipment: After Lee announces, "Harry Potter has caught the Snitch. Gryffindor wins!" there is a shot of the falling Bludger. In the next two close-ups of Harry as he avoids the Bludger and looks up, multiple head studio lighting, used to mimic daylight on his features, is very clearly reflected in BOTH lenses of his glasses. In the opening shot of the ongoing Quidditch match, the entire pitch is visible and it is void of any lights.
Continuity mistake: When Harry is in the Chamber of Secrets and has just killed the basilisk, you can see in three or four shots that Harry is still on top of Salazar Slytherin's head. Now when the basilisk falls down dead, Riddle looks upward in anger at Harry who should still be up there. However, in the shot immediately following, it shows Harry walking right next to the dead basilisk.
Continuity mistake: When Harry is in Borgin & Burkes in Knockturn Alley, he approaches the glass dome with skulls sitting on the shelf and to the right is a large round mirror sitting atop a cabinet. When he walks away after freeing his hand from The Hand of Glory, in this wide shot there is now a very tall, ornate, wrought iron fixture behind him that stands beside the shelf, in front of the round mirror and cabinet, that was not in that previous shot.
Continuity mistake: Tom Riddle says, "She won't wake" and walks toward Harry. When Harry says "Tom. Tom Riddle," the shot faces Harry and Ginny, and Harry's wand is lying on the open ground below the sole of Ginny's shoe. When Harry asks "Are you a ghost?" as the camera pans closer to Harry, his wand is conspicuously in a different place now, it is lying partially hidden under Ginny's robe above her right foot, right next to Harry. In the next shot after Riddle says, "A memory. Preserved...," the wand is gone from the previous shot's position. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Visible crew/equipment: In his study, Dumbledore speaks to Lucius Malfoy and holds up the skewered diary for Malfoy to see. When Dumbledore puts the diary down in this shot as Dobby tugs on Harry's sleeve the moving black wire between Dobby and Malfoy on Dobby's left is visible on the bottom of the screen. This wire was attached to Harry's sleeve to make it move and though the wire between Dobby and Harry was edited out, the other end was not. (Visible on fullscreen DVD.)
Visible crew/equipment: When Harry, Ron and Lockhart are in the girls' lavatory, Harry speaks Parseltongue to open the Chamber. Lockhart then tries to escape so the boys push him back. In this shot the white strips taped to the small black mat, which itself is taped to the floor for Rupert's mark, are plainly visible at his feet.
Visible crew/equipment: Upon entering the Chamber of Secrets, Harry spots Ginny and runs towards her. After the last close-up of Harry's face as he runs, there is shot that faces Ginny, showing Harry's back. At the very start of this shot, on the bottom left corner of the screen two overhead studio lights, other equipment and scaffolding are perfectly visible, reflected in the puddle to Harry's left. Later when he runs out of the pipe, towards Ginny, some light reflections are visible as well. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Continuity mistake: When Harry escapes into the Ford Anglia, in the interior shot Ron grabs firm hold of Harry under his left arm, while Vernon pulls on Harry's foot. In the overhead exterior shot Ron's arm holds Harry above his arm, yet in the next close-up of Harry, Ron's arm is under Harry's. Then just after Ron yells, "Drive!" Ron's arm is over Harry's arm once again.
Continuity mistake: Hermione stops on the stairs, turns around to face Harry and Ron, on the steps below, then she says, "You hear this voice, a voice only you can hear," and there is a large portrait, with a name plaque underneath, on the wall to her right. In the next shot facing Hermione, the frame of the large portrait is completely different and more ornate.
Revealing mistake: Throughout the Quidditch match, Harry's right arm guard is visible. At the top, over his elbow, there is an attached strip of leather that is tied securely around his arm and the three short straps are snugly buckled around his forearm. However, as the Bludger approaches just before breaking his arm, the ties on the strip of leather are GONE, though visibly tucked up in the close-up and the buckled straps are considerably LONGER, deliberately causing the arm guard to be very loose. The position of the arm guard differs in the two close-ups as well.
Visible crew/equipment: When Harry and Ron, under the invisibility cloak, knock on the door of Hagrid's hut, Hagrid goes to the door. When Hagrid kicks the door open the MARK, a strip of blue tape, is visible on the floor behind him, near the table. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Continuity mistake: When Harry arrives at the Weasley's house, we see a shot of the chimney that he is going to travel up. There is no pot of floo powder nor is there a bracket to hold it. When they go to travel to Diagon Alley, the bracket is on the right of the fireplace attached to the bricks, with the pot of floo powder in it.
Visible crew/equipment: After Harry, Ron and Hermione discover the bloody writing on the wall and petrified Mrs. Norris other students start arriving. After the overhead shot, at the start of the next close-up as Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle come round the corner, under Goyle's feet the taped mat is visible on the floor and it was not there in the previous overhead shot. (Visible on fullscreen DVD.)
Visible crew/equipment: When Harry and Ron are under the invisibility cloak in Hagrid's hut, Hagrid, Dumbledore and Fudge are joined by Lucius Malfoy. In the wide shot as Malfoy steps in, all the mats - their marks - are visible under Malfoy, Fudge and Dumbledore. Then later Dumbledore says, "If the governors desire my removal, I will of course.." and in the shot facing Malfoy as he finishes, "..step aside," the mat that Malfoy now stands on is visible as is the blue mark behind his feet. It's also visible in an earlier shot after he announces the order of suspension. The mat at the foot of Hagrid's chair disappears as well. (Visible on fullscreen DVD.)
01:39:35 - 01:40:55Super Grover
Visible crew/equipment: After leaving Borgin & Burkes in Knockturn Alley, Harry is accosted by a witch. When he begins to turn around, just as the bald man approaches, the actors' mark is clearly visible on the edge of the first deep step below, with the shallow steps in the background. In the shot from above, after Hagrid says, "What do you think you're doing down here? Come on," their mark is GONE. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Visible crew/equipment: In Flourish and Blotts, after being spotted, the photographer pushes Harry behind the desk and Lockhart pulls Harry closer. At the start of this shot, the books lying on the floor, on the left, are visible under the desk. There are two strips of white tape, perpendicular to each other, on the floor protruding from under the books. However, in the overhead shot when Lockhart says, "..is currently celebrating its 27th week...," their mark is GONE. The tape is visible again when Lockhart says, "..with my entire collected works...," due to the same camera angle as the first. (Visible in DVD fullscreen)
Revealing mistake: When Harry and the Weasleys are standing on Platform 10, it is Ginny's turn to go, in this shot Ron's trunk is clearly visible, note the stains, the latch hardware on the right long side, the corner hardware at the four corners, etc. After Mr. and Mrs. Weasley go, Harry says, "Let's go!" and as they begin to run, Ron's trunk is clearly seen again and it is NOT the same trunk, note the stains, the lack of hardware at the right, no hardware at the four corners, etc, plus the small parcels near Scabbers are different too.
Visible crew/equipment: After Harry says, "Rictusempra!" Malfoy is thrown across the room and lands at Snape's feet. Snape grabs Malfoy at the back of his neck and as he pulls him up, Alan Rickman's mark, the green tape, is visible at his feet, as well as Tom Felton's white tape mark at his left foot. Whereas in the earlier shot, when Snape suggests someone from his own house and says, "Malfoy, perhaps," the end of the mat is visibly without any marks. (Not visible in DVD widescreen format)
01:06:25 - 01:07:40Super Grover
Visible crew/equipment: In the three shots facing Lockhart as he continues to say, "It is my job to arm you against the foulest creatures known to wizardkind... Know only that no harm can befall you whilst I am here," there is a WIRE attached at the bottom left of the cloth that lies on the pixie's cage. However in the close-up of the cage, as Lockhart removes the cloth, the bottom of the cloth is clearly visible and the wire is gone.
Revealing mistake: After the car shows up to save Ron and Harry from the spiders, Harry shouts, "Arania Exumai! The light from his wand illuminates the car and the NORMAL tread back tire is clearly visible. When they are in the car Harry shouts, "Go!" In the close-up of the tire, before it starts to spin, the tread on the tire is once again clearly visible. However it's an entirely different tire, a deep tread SNOW tire no less.
Other mistake: While downstairs Vernon hears Hedwig's squawks, as well as Dobby and Harry's exchange in the bedroom upstairs, distracting enough for them all, including the Masons, to take note. The noise upstairs illicits a reaction from everyone, which Vernon explains is a noisy cat. Yet when Harry very noisily chases Dobby down the steps, Dobby slams into the wall and Harry lands with a loud thud (not remotely 'catlike'), Vernon, who stands on the other side of the shared wall, pleasantly continues his story to his rapt guests, who are also not distracted by the noise. To suggest that such loud noises coming from the hallway right beside them would not draw any reaction from anyone, Vernon and the Masons included, is preposterous.
Revealing mistake: As Harry climbs the Salazar Slytherine stone head's locks of hair, the Basilisk crashes his face and creates the first immense hole. As Harry tries to climb higher, it pounds into the stone again creating another huge hole, higher up on another lock of hair, to Harry's left as he hangs on. However, when the Basilisk smashes his face into the stone a third time, as Harry nears the top, the second huge hole is GONE, in this shot and in the first wide shot in which Tom Riddle is visible.
Visible crew/equipment: While Harry is in Dumbledore's study, in the two semi-overhead shots as Lucius Malfoy says, "So it's true. You have returned," and later when he says, "Come Dobby, we're leaving," sitting on the floor directly behind Dumbledore is a large STEEL piece of the crew's equipment, plus in the second shot another piece of equipment actually moves in front of the steel piece.
02:21:35 - 02:23:35Super Grover
Revealing mistake: The Ford Anglia's front seats keep changing. When Ron, Fred and George are rescuing Harry from the Dursleys, the front passenger seat has a curved thin back and is very dark blue with light blue trim at each side. However some examples when it differs are, as Harry hangs from the car while flying over Hogwarts Express, though the seat has a curved back, in some shots the seat is two shades of light blue and in others it is as in the shots at the Dursleys. Yet at Hogwarts, when the car ejects Hedwig, the back of the seat is thick and perfectly sraight and so on.
00:09:35 - 00:25:05Super Grover
Revealing mistake: When Harry stands at his bedroom window looking at the nearing headlights, the houses opposite him on the left are really the neighboring houses that are seen to the left of the Dursleys when facing the Dursley house and the one on the right is actually the Dursley's home. In the close-up of the car as its headlights face Harry, the Dursley's house is seen behind it, but the check curtains and patio table were added to change the look of the house. The distinctive pattern of each of the home's bricks are a giveaway.
Revealing mistake: When the limb of the Whomping Willow crashes through the back window of the car, the hole changes shape in certain shots. In the first interior shot, as the branch goes through, the hole that is made is completely different than in the next exterior shot, as the tree branch leaves. (no pun intended)
Continuity mistake: As Harry chases the Snitch after his arm is broken, he reaches and catches it in the shot facing him. In the next side shot, as he begins to roll over while still balancing on top his broom, the attached foot rest is visible between his thighs. However, when he rolls under his broom then skids to the ground, it is clear that the foot rest is gone. Whether the foot rest is in the open or closed position, it would still be visible either above or below his leg.
Plot hole: At the beginning of the movie, Hedwig rattles her cage, and Harry says apologetically, "I can't let you out, Hedwig; I'm not allowed to use magic outside of school." But he wouldn't have to use magic to let her out - the key is visible sticking out of the lock on the cage, so all he would have to do is turn the key.
Continuity mistake: The cork board, hanging over Harry's bed in the Dursley house, significantly changes its position on the wall, as seen when Harry sits on his bed to speak with Dobby. The location of the thumbtack pushed into the top point of the Gryffindor pennant, as well as the angle of the other point, also change throughout the scenes in Harry's bedroom.
00:03:10 - 00:04:45Super Grover
Deliberate mistake: When bars are placed on Harry's windows, so he does not escape, it is apparent that his windows have complete leaded panes of glass. Yet when Harry is being rescued, Ron and Harry speak with each other, even in low voices, through his visibly closed windows.
00:08:00 - 00:09:00
Continuity mistake: In the Whomping Willow, the trunk of the car recieves a noticeable gash just above the lock on the trunk as well as a huge dent in the trunk. However just before the trunk pops open to eject Harry and Ron's belongings, it is blatantly apparent that it is not the same car trunk. The gash and dent are both gone, the Ford Anglia nameplate on the right side is gone, the lock is different, the area under the bent fender is different, etc. After the spider escape, though the nameplate is back, the dent and gash are still gone.
Revealing mistake: As Errol swoops down, there are various angles that he's seen flying over students for the drama, however the last ones are very different. First, an overhead wide shot of the dining hall. Second, heading towards the camera, as Fred and George sit on the left. Third, an overhead of the Gryffindor table. The next two differ completely. First a long pan as Errol flies between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff tables, way past Fred, George and Ron's stand-in, who sit in front of the fireplace, causing some students at Gryffindor table to lean FORWARD, so Errol doesn't hit their backs as he goes off screen to the left. Next shot, Errol flies toward the camera passing Fred, George and the rest, who dramatically lean BACKWARD in this shot, as Errol flies over their table between them.
Continuity mistake: During the scene when Harry and Ron are talking to Malfoy as Crabbe and Goyle, Draco has his hair slicked straight back. A couple of seconds later, Draco's hair is parted a bit, and messed up at the back. Some more seconds later, his hair is slicked and tidy once more.
Revealing mistake: When Harry sits in the Gryffindor common room with the diary, in the close-up, the name Tom Marvolo Riddle is gold embossed on the back cover. However in the previous shot, when Harry lifts the diary off the floor in the lavatory, both sides are clearly visible and the name is NOT on either side, nor is it seen on either side when Harry first takes it from Ginny's arm and when he closes it to stab the cover with the Basilisk fang. The name is also NOT embossed on the cover when Dumbledore holds it up in his study or in the close-up of the other side when he places it on the desk in front of Harry and Lucius Malfoy.
01:27:10 - 02:15:10Super Grover
Continuity mistake: After Harry has caught the Snitch and is sitting up, Hermione runs over to him and kneels in the sand next to him. Her robes are covering her knees in a long shot, but as it cuts to a close up her knees can be seen, and this continues to switch for the next couple of shots.
Continuity mistake: As Harry chases Dobby into the hallway, he lands behind Dobby with knees bent, his left hand and foot in front and his right hand and foot in back. The next shot he has not moved, but his stance is the opposite, left hand and foot in back and his right hand and foot in front.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Harry is stabbing Tom Riddle's diary for the last time, he closes the book and we see a close up of its cover, covered in ink. In the next close-up of the diary its cover is clean, and a small blue dot (where the ink subsequently squirts from) is visible in the centre for Harry to aim the tooth at.
Continuity mistake: Dumbledore asks, "Why then did the Sorting Hat place you in Gryffindor?" and in this close-up the Sorting Hat sits on two books. In the next shot, as Harry answers, "Because I asked it to." The hat now sits on three books in this close-up. During this entire scene in Dumbledore's study, things including the Sorting Hat and lamp behind Dumbledore to his right, change position depending on camera angle.
02:18:00 - 02:20:20Super Grover
Continuity mistake: In Knockturn Alley, as Harry rushes to the doorway to step outside the Borgin & Burkes, the advertisements/notices lining the wall across the seedy alley are visible. When Harry turns around after saying, "I'm fine, thank you," the same wall is seen again to his left, but the advertisements all over the wall are completely different now.
Continuity mistake: When Harry and Hermione run into Flourish and Blotts, Mrs. Weasley fusses and wipes off Harry's cloak. As she says, "Thank goodness. We'd hoped you'd only gone one grate..," she holds her purse a particular way and Ginny faces Harry, yet, in the next shot as she continues to say, "..too far," she holds her purse differently and Ginny now faces the other way.
Continuity mistake: When Harry holds the page about the Basilisk that Hermione tore out of a book, in the two close-ups of that page the bottom left side is crookedly ripped into the words. However, in the wide shots as Harry holds it that side of the page is ripped straight down.
Continuity mistake: After Lockhart releases the pixies there is an overhead shot of Neville being lifted to the ceiling while students down below start to flee the classroom, including Malfoy and Goyle. In the next shot as Malfoy and Goyle, who are still at the desks, start to run towards the camera, Lockhart is visibly running up the stairs in the background, though in the following shots he's downstairs.
Visible crew/equipment: As Harry runs from the Basilisk after Riddle shouts, "Parseltongue won't save you now, Potter...," there is a close-up of the Basilisk's face. In the next shot, which faces Harry's back, the overhead studio lighting bar with multiple lights is reflected in the puddle in front of Harry.
Continuity mistake: When the car flies towards the Whomping Willow, Ron holds the wand as both of Harry's hands desperately try to steer the car. Yet in the next shot facing the Whomping Willow, only Ron's hand is visibly on the steering wheel. Then in the next couple of shots Harry is still gripping the steering wheel trying to avoid the tree.
Revealing mistake: From within the Quidditch pitch, when facing one set of three goal posts the last spectator tower to the left is Ravenclaw and Gryffindor tower is last to the right and when facing the other set of goal posts Slytherin tower is last to the left and Hufflepuff tower is last to the right. After the Bludger breaks Harry's arm, in the shot facing the Snitch, as Harry's hand reaches for it, directly in FRONT of Harry are the goal posts between Slytherin and Hufflepuff towers. Then in the next shot facing Harry, as he reaches and catches Snitch, those same goal posts are directly BEHIND Harry. Yet, when he lands in the sand, he is at those very goal posts.
Continuity mistake: When the Basilisk emerges from the water, in the first shot Harry looks at the Sorting Hat and Gryffindor's sword appears. As Harry gets the sword, in the second shot the Sorting Hat is not only positioned differently it is also lying on another part of the 'stone' floor.
Revealing mistake: When Lockhart pushes up Harry's sleeve before attempting to mend Harry's broken bone, we see a few freckles on Harry's forearm. When Lockhart got rid of Harry's bones, he also got rid of Harry's freckles. The freckles are back when Harry drinks the Skele-gro at the hospital wing. In other words, the fake arm was missing details visible on Harry's arm.
Continuity mistake: When Dobby stands on Harry's desk, in the close-up he slams the lamp base into his head with the electrical cord coming out of the base to his right. Yet in the next close-up the cord comes out of the base directly in front of Dobby and is now wrapped around Dobby's neck.
Continuity mistake: After transforming the bird into a water goblet, Professor McGonagall says, "Now it's your turn. Who would like to go first?" The Slytherin girl on the left has pigtails that start at her earlobes, though in the next shot the pigtails start much higher, at the top of her ears.
Continuity mistake: While in the Whomping Willow, the center point of the cracks and spider cracks around it on the car's windshield changes shape and position. In the first shot of the windshield being smashed to four shots later of Harry turning towards the back, with the windshield visible behind him. Regardless of whether more damage occurs to the windshield, the center point of each of the two cracks should be in the same place, which it is not.
Continuity mistake: At the Weasleys, there is a close-up of Harry's face as he watches the fry pan being washed. In this shot as Harry walks away, twin 1 removes his jacket, while twin 2, wearing his jacket, closes the window atop the short door. In the next shot as Harry nears the clock, twin 1 takes his jacket off again.
Continuity mistake: In the hospital wing, as Madame Pomfrey removes the skull bottle top of the Skele-Gro and sets it down, she says, "But it'll be painful," and Harry actually smirks at her. In the next close-up, as she pours some Skele-Gro into a glass and places the bottle down, the skull top now faces the opposite way. In the following shot as she hands Harry the glass, the position of both the skull top and the bottle of Skele-Gro are quite obviously different than the previous close-up.
Continuity mistake: While deriding Mr. Weasley in the book shop, Lucius Malfoy snidely holds Ginny's book up and as he says, "But judging by the state of this, I'd say not", in the side shot, he puts the book down and it's loud enough to be heard, yet in the next front shot he still holds it up and brings it down again. This is well before Lucius sneaks Tom's diary into the cauldron behind Ginny's book.
Other mistake: Dutch DVD Only: After their crashlanding at Hogwarts, Harry and Ron are taken to Snape who tells them the Willow has been standing there "since before they were born". The Dutch translation reads "over a thousand years". It's a minor mistake on itself, but in Book 3 we learn how long the Willow has really been standing there and that's nowhere near "over a thousand years".
Continuity mistake: When the Hogwarts letters arrive at the burrow, Percy hands them out. He hands one to Fred and then passes one over Fred to give to George. But in the shot from behind the twins (looking at Harry and Ron), George receives another one. He is at the end of the table, so there is no one for him to pass it to because Arthur obviously didn't get one.
Continuity mistake: In the first overhead shot of Dumbledore's study as he presumably starts to discipline Harry and Ron the corner of the rug below lies flat and evenly under Fawkes' perch. However when Dumbledore stands up to hand Ron the letter for Azkaban the rug differs greatly, though it has not been touched.
Continuity mistake: In the Slytherine common room, Malfoy sits at the edge of the desk, as he speaks with Crabbe/Ron and Goyle/Harry and the items on the desk are visible around him. When Malfoy says, "It's been fifty years since the Chamber was opened..," he now sits at the left edge, the snake lamp stem is turned around, etc.
Visible crew/equipment: When Hagrid and Harry leave Knockturn Alley, Hagrid's face is hidden in shadow, as it is really the body double behind Harry and we hear Hagrid's voice say, "You're a mess Harry. Skulking around Knockturn Alley? Dodgy place..." As Hagrid's (Robbie Coltrane) voice continues, "People will think you're up to no good," Dan Radcliffe reaches his white tape mark cueing him to turn and begin to say, "I was lost. I... Hang on. What were you doing down there then?" (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Continuity mistake: When Harry enters the kitchen, the cake/pudding Petunia is fussing over is lopsided and shorter than the one shown in the close-up, when Dudley tries to pick at it. There are subtle differences in the look of the cake/pudding in subsequent shots of it too.
Continuity mistake: As Ron and Harry stand in the girls' lavatory, Hermione gives them their glasses of Polyjuice potion. In the wide shot, Ron bends his left index finger to slip through the silver handle at the base of the glass and his right robe sleeve is way past his wrist as they proceed to put hair in the glasses. However in the close-up of Ron's hands, his index finger now goes through the handle the opposite way and a good amount of his right sweater sleeve shows under his robe too. Then when Hermione says, "Cheers," she holds the base of glass with the handle near her thumb, but no fingers go through it as she starts to drink the potion. Yet in her close-up she grips the glass completely differently.
Continuity mistake: At the Weasleys, Ron takes his jacket off, picks up a biscuit with his right hand, then switches and holds the jacket in his right hand and the biscuit in his left. In the next shot, a close-up of Harry, Ron takes a bite of the biscuit which is in his right hand again and chews a mouthful, while holding the jacket in his left, yet in the next shot his jacket is in his right hand and he isn't chewing at all. He then takes a second mouthful of the biscuit in his right hand, but in the next shot as he looks down at his biscuit, only a small bite has been taken out of it.
Revealing mistake: When Crabbe and Goyle are reaching for the cakes that Harry levitated, Ron and Harry are seen in the background, beside the statue, and though they are a bit out of focus you can clearly see that it is Rupert Grint's body double in each of the long shots. The shape of his face differs and his hair is very floppy.
Revealing mistake: At the Quidditch match, the goal posts are visible at both ends of the pitch in many shots, including the shortest ones. When rushing to Harry, Hermione shouts, "Finite Incantatem!" In the shot of Ron and Hermione's backs as they run towards Harry, the short goal post's base is visible on the left. It is completely different in this close-up than in any of the wide shots.
00:54:40 - 00:57:45Super Grover
Continuity mistake: At Diagon Alley, Hermione says, "Oculus Reparo," and in the next shot facing her, two girls, one with a green coat and one with a blue coat, come up behind her and in the next shot facing Harry as he examines his repaired glasses, they pass behind him. Yet in the next shot facing Hermione, they pass by her again. Then after a shot of Hagrid, in the next shot facing Harry, Hermione and Hagrid, the two girls walk by yet again.
Continuity mistake: While in the girls' lavatory after Harry speaks Parseltongue, in the overhead shot as the sink top rises and in the following close-up of Harry, Ron and Lockhart, the boys stand close to the wall behind them. However, in the next overhead shot as the sinks seperate Harry and Ron are directly in front of the sinks.
Other mistake: This is especially apparent when Harry and company are flying out of the Chamber, but can be seen throughout the movie: when the characters are hanging, their feet are still flat and stiff, as if they are still standing, instead of straightened, as if they are hanging in the air.
Continuity mistake: At the Dursley residence, when Harry wakes up and gets out of bed to look out the window, a bowl and plate with leftovers sit on the desk. In the following shots, until Vernon goes after Harry out the window, the food on the plate changes and the plate changes position back and forth on the table. When Vernon yells, "Petunia, he's escaping," in the interior shot the lamp is at the corner of the bed, yet in the next exterior shot it's lying on the pillow. The position of Harry's comforter changes during his escape as well.
Continuity mistake: While in the Slytherin common room, as Malfoy says, "But my father did say this.," visible behind Crabbe/Ron and Goyle/Harry, there is a Slytherin striped scarf slung over the back of the chair. This scarf changes position when Ron/Crabbe jumps up and Harry/Goyle grabs him and in the very last overhead shot of Crabbe/Ron and Goyle/Harry as they run up the stairs.
Continuity mistake: In the Slytherin common room, the green pillow at Malfoy's arm while he sits on the couch differs in the very first shot from behind Malfoy and the ones facing him. The wood logs change behind Malfoy and the marks in the dust on the table between two sofas in front of Goyle differs greatly, after Malfoy asks, "How many times do I have to tell you?"
Continuity mistake: As Harry and Malfoy race to the Snitch, in the shot facing Colin as they approach him, the platform he stands on, the stairs to his left, etc., are all visible, as is the area below the platform, just under the Hufflepuff tarp which is in front of Colin, to his left. In the next shot as Harry and Malfoy zoom by, the platform and stairs are different and there is now a crate, with a basket and other things on top of it, sitting under the Hufflepuff tarp, etc.
Continuity mistake: In the close-up when Hermione screams, "Immobulus!" at the Cornish pixies, the floor and platform under Lockhart's desk have a mess of books and papers. Next wide shot the mess on the floor and platform are different. In the next close-up of Hermione, the mess is the same as the first close-up.
Continuity mistake: In the girls' lavatory, Lockhart tries to bolt so Harry and Ron stop him and push him back. When Harry says, "You first," in this first shot his cloak not only drapes over the sink to his left, it's also under his hand's tight grip of the sink's wall. However in the next shot, still gripping the wall, his cloak now hangs behind him. Then after Ron says, "Better you than us," Lockhart's cloak is positioned the same way as the first shot.
Continuity mistake: In the overhead wide shot of the moving stairs, the camera closes in on Hermione, Harry and Ron on the stairs, with the portraits on the wall, to their left. In this mostly CG shot the small hanging name plaques are missing under the portraits and the portraits on Hermione's left hang much higher over the banister than in the next shot, which has the name plaques in place.
Audio problem: Riddle tells young Hagrid in the close-up, "They'll have your wand for this Hagrid. You'll be expelled." In the following side shot Riddle's mouth still moves as Hagrid puts his head down and though no words are heard his lips move as if repeating "You'll be expelled." It is not until the next shot of Harry as he yells, "Hagrid!" that the memory just begins to end as Harry moves back to the present.
Continuity mistake: When the flying car throws Ron and Harry out at Hogwarts, Harry lands on his back. While he lies on his back his sweater has ridden up, exposing his stomach. A few shots later he starts to get up, but a couple of shots after that he's still on his back with his sweater pulled down properly.
Continuity mistake: At Flourish and Blotts, when Draco taunts Harry and Ron, he is taller than Harry and his face is quite developed, more so than in the first film. However, in the Duelling Club scene, in the close ups you can see that Harry is the taller one, if only by a little bit, and Draco's face is rounder and more childish. Obviously shot out of sequence.
00:19:55 - 01:06:55
Audio problem: At the Burrow, as Harry walks away from the clock, he notices the self knitting needles, in the wide shot as Ron passes the clock, he mouths the words, "It's not much," but nothing is heard. Obviously because it is meant to be heard in one of the following close-ups of Harry when Ron says, "It's not much, but it's home."
Continuity mistake: As they fly over Hogwarts Express Ron yells, "Take my hand!" the corner rubber trim of the door frame is peeling up. When Ron grabs hold in the shot facing Ron, their hands are positioned differently than in the next close-up where it's visible that the frame of the door is fairly clean, there are two parcels behind the seat, etc. Yet when Ron grabs hold after Harry says, "...Your hand's all sweaty," the rubber trim is fitted into place, the frame of the door is filthy and there are different parcels behind the seat, etc.
Continuity mistake: Harry is forced to stand beside Lockhart as he says, "Nice big smile Harry. Together you and I rate the front page," and the books are visible under the desk. In the overhead shot before it pans to Malfoy, the books are visible again, but the stacked black books' positions differ considerably.
Continuity mistake: When Hermione pours the Polyjuice potion into the glasses some of the thick liquid drips down to the top and side of the sink. In both the close-up of Harry's bubbling hand and the shot after the transformation of Goyle/Harry leaning his hands on the sink the Polyjuice potion drips are gone and the sink is clean. The towel near the window hangs differently in this shot, as well as the earlier overhead shot of Harry as he stands at the sink. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
01:19:35 - 01:20:45Super Grover
Audio problem: When we see the first defence against the dark arts class with the pixies taking over, when Lockhart goes out and tells Harry, Ron and Hermione to pop them back into the cage, Hermione makes them all freeze in mid-air. Most of the pixies drop bits of paper, but one drops a big book. You can see it go thundering down the the ground, but you can't hear it land. All you can hear is bits of paper flying everywhere.
Continuity mistake: After Riddle yells, "Stop. No!" Harry stabs the diary the 1st time. In the next shot as Riddle stares at the hole in his chest he drops Harry's wand and it bounces near the Sorting Hat. In Riddle's close-up he is in the same position, he still stares at the gaping hole in his chest and Harry's wand is in his hand.
Continuity mistake: The stripes on the knot of Harry's tie change position between certain shots, yet Harry does not redo his tie. For example, the diagonal red stripe is higher when he first speaks with Tom Riddle and lower when he kills Riddle and thanks Fawkes.
02:11:20 - 02:16:15Super Grover
Revealing mistake: When the bars on Harry's window are being ripped off, most of the window frame comes off as well. In the close-up. the attached hook pulls the bottom of bars and window outward, causing them to fall a certain way. Yet in the next shot looking up, the way in which the bars and window fall is strikingly different, not to mention unrealistic if it was really being yanked out via the hook at the bottom.
Revealing mistake: In the scene where Ron's owl flies over the students, you see that Errol's wings are perfect. However, in the next shot you see all the feathers ruffled (since Errol smashed into so many things). Then they use a dummy owl to ensure safety of the owl. The owl that's lying down is obviously a dummy, too. Then it turns back to the real bird so it can fly away. Mind you, it nearly hits Hermione in the head.
Revealing mistake: At the Quidditch match, in the close-up when the Bludger knocks off Harry's arm guard, his right arm below the elbow is very conspicuously digitally augmented. When Harry falls toward the sand and unlocks his legs from around the broom, his legs below the knees, especially his right leg, are digitally augmented as well. (Second shot is more visible in DVD fullscreen.)
Continuity mistake: When Harry is in the Chamber, running from the Basilisk, he trips and his glasses fly off his head, toward the left of the screen. In the wide shot as Harry trips, when his left hand touches the ground, the glasses are visible above his head. As his right hand touches the ground the glasses are again visible above his head. As the rest of his body touches ground, Harry's feet swing up in the air behind him and the glasses are now in the air way in front of him, just before they fly off to the left of the screen. However, in the next close-up the glasses are right in front of him and bounce toward his face. (If necessary, use slow motion.)
Continuity mistake: In Transfiguration class, when Professor McGonagall says, "Yes, Miss Granger," the Ring-tailed Lemurs are playing at the bottom of their cage, but when McGonagall says, "You all know that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand..." the Lemurs are high on their perch, all nestled together. Then as McGonagall says, "Now, three of the founders coexisted quite harmoniously..." they're playing down below again. Yet, when McGonagall says, "...be kept within all-magic families. In other words, pure-bloods," they're back up on the perch, nestled together again.
Continuity mistake: Harry and Ron crash into the bricks between platforms nine and ten. When Harry crashes, Hedwig's cage slips and the door opens. Then, as Ron's luggage cart hits, Ron falls over and in the close-up as stuffed Hedwig topples over, the entire cage bends and a bar at the top actually breaks. However, in the next close-up of live Hedwig, the bird and cage are fine.
Continuity mistake: Harry pulls the sword out from the Basilisk's mouth, clutches at his right arm and the sword he holds has blood only at the tip. In the very next shot, as he clutches the tooth in his right arm, sword still in hand, there is now plenty of blood on the blade.
Continuity mistake: When Harry walks over to the clock at the Burrow, in the wide shot, the hands are all pointing in a particular direction, then in the close-up, some of those hands change their position. However in the next wide shot, as Harry walks away, all of the hands are pointing in the same direction as in the previous wide shot.
Continuity mistake: While standing in the Dursley's kitchen doorway, Dobby says, "Then Dobby must do it sir, for Harry Potter's own good." In the next shot as the cake/pudding floats away, the wine bottle on the counter is pointing towards the hallway. Yet when Harry stands by the kitchen watching the cake/pudding float towards Mrs. Mason, the wine caddy is turned and the bottle now points towards the kitchen wall.
Continuity mistake: As the boys are sitting and eating at the Weasley kitchen table and then joined by Mr. Weasley, in every wide shot Ron sits a good distance away from the table, yet in the close-ups, he's tucked right up against the kitchen table. (Visible in DVD fullscreen format)
Continuity mistake: When Oliver Wood argues with Flint about who has the pitch for Quidditch practice, there is a close-up of Wood and the ties on his robe. When Ron is on the ground spitting up slugs, in the close-up of Colin, Wood's robe is seen clearly and the ties on his robe are actually put through the grommets and tied very differently, as is the case with others.
00:38:30 - 00:39:35Super Grover
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Harry and Ron are in the Dark Forest getting away from the spiders, the car comes and Fang gets in twice. First Fang goes in through Harry's door as the camera faces Harry, then Ron gets in the car and then Fang gets in again through Harry's door as Harry casts his spell.
Continuity mistake: When it shows Harry writing in the diary, he writes "My name is Harry Potter." When he does this he says what he is writing. It shows what he is writing until he gets to the letters "Po..." Then the shot cuts out to Harry still continuing his sentence. But he only write about 1 or 2 more letters. That means he couldn't have finished his name.
Revealing mistake: When Harry takes floo powder, in the wide shot Mrs. Weasley grips the pot with her right hand outstretched, her thumb at the top and the other fingers below, but in the next close-up of the pot, the pot is held by both of her hands around the pot. In the close-up of Mrs. Weasley holding the pot, the hands are not Julie Walters' (Mrs. Weasley) hands.
Revealing mistake: In the scene where Harry Potter is writing in Tom Riddle's diary, we see Harry dipping his feather pen into the ink jar. Notice the shape and size of Harry's hand. When Harry actually starts to write in the diary we see a close up of Harry's hand, but it's not his actual hand doing the writing. The "stunt" hand has longer thinner fingers than Harry Potter's 12 year old hand.
Continuity mistake: When the spider has Ron by the neck, Harry motions for Ron to move his head so he can take aim at the spider and yells, "Arania Exumai!" As the spider is forced away, in the close-up the back of Ron's head is positioned out his window. In the wide shot of the spider as it 'flies' away, Ron is sitting normally in the car. Yet, in the next close-up Ron's head is still positioned out of his window.
Continuity mistake: When Hermione shouts, "Immobulus!" at the Cornish pixies, in the shot facing Neville, Harry, who's sitting on his knees, is right next to Hermione with Ron at his other side also on his knees. In the next wide shot, Harry and Ron, still on their knees, are much further away from Hermione.
Continuity mistake: The distance between Harry and Ron when they're sliding into the Chamber of Secrets keeps changing. Harry jumps first, and Ron jumps a few seconds later, so there should be a little distance between them. But when they're sliding down, Ron is directly behind Harry. At the bottom though, Harry slides onto the ground a few seconds before Ron, meaning they're again some distance apart.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where McGonagall explains about the Chamber of Secrets there is a close up of Harry, and she obviously walks past him as you see her green robes block him from view for a second. However, the next shot shows her from the front walking towards the camera and you can see her walking past Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle who are sitting behind Harry.
Continuity mistake: At the Quidditch match, in the overhead close-up of Harry when he lands, the area of sand around him is visible. When Harry lifts up the Snitch and smiles, and in the next overhead shot as he begins to roll out of the way of the Bludger, the sand is still visible around his head. The tracks in the sand are different in each of these shots, but it's not been touched yet.
Revealing mistake: The appearance of Harry's scar differs in some close-ups. For example, at the Quidditch match, in Harry's first close-up his scar has an outline and is thicker than other shots. Other examples are, in Harry's first close-up as he flies behind Malfoy below the pitch stands and also when he reaches for the Snitch after his arm breaks.
00:53:35 - 00:55:50Super Grover
Continuity mistake: When Harry first encounters Dobby, as he walks toward the corner of the bed to bow to Harry, a single sock and other clothes are lying on the bed. In the next shot facing Harry, the sock and clothes on the bed have noticeably changed positions and the two long ends of the Gryffindor scarf that hang over the trunk is visible. When Dobby sobs, as he walks off the bed, only one short end of the Gryffindor scarf hangs over the trunk, and it also changes position in following shots.
Continuity mistake: Errol makes a mess with the chips and when Ron deals with the Howler, the mess on the table differs depending on the camera angle. For example, when the Howler says, "Ronald Weasley! How dare...," there is one kind of mess and then when it says, "..and it's entirely your fault!" there is another mess, but when the Howler shreds itself, the mess is the same as the first shot.
Revealing mistake: After Harry yells, "Wood, look out!" Harry ducks to avoid the Bludger and flies away. In the following close-up of Harry, there are two reflections in each of the lenses of his glasses. The reflections were added deliberately for this shot, however, as he sweeps around the pitch, changing direction as he goes, the reflections should reflect the change in scenery around him, but it does NOT.
Continuity mistake: In the dueling scene with Snape and Lockhart, when Snape says expelliarmus then does his wand movement, the camera leaves him after he has stopped moving his wand to look at how it goes after Lockhart, you can see Snape still in the background and he has not finished moving his wand.
Continuity mistake: In Dumbledore's study, after speaking with the Sorting Hat, Harry walks toward Fawkes. As he passes Dumbledore's desk, on the corner of the desk there are some books lying on the side of the crystal ball. Then in the overhead shot as Harry says, "Your bird... He just caught fire," the books lie diagonally at the corner in front of the crystal ball.
Continuity mistake: After arriving at Diagon Alley, Hermione runs up to Harry and Hagrid. In the wide shot as she says, "Harry!" there is a man with a red hat, holding an owl, to Harry's left and hanging in the doorway are beads that are pulled to the side door frame. In the close-up when Hermione says, "It's so good to see you," as that man enters the store the beads are hanging straight down. The beads are pulled up again in the next wide shot when they say goodbye to Hagrid.
Continuity mistake: Throughout the film, one of the young actors may have one or more pimples on their face, yet in the following shots which may take place only moments later, the pimples are gone, or visa versa. For example, when Hagrid joins Harry, Hermione and Ron outside when he overhears, "Mad and hairy...," Harry has one on his cheek. Neville tells them to rush to Harry's room. While Harry, whose own pimple has disappeared, searches the mess, the one on Ron's chin is visible, though it wasn't in the shot outside. Scenes are shot out of sequence, hence the erratic complexion continuity problem.
01:33:50 - 01:35:00Super Grover
Continuity mistake: When Harry stabs the diary, it is completely soaked in ink, but when Professor Dumbeldore shows it to him it is partially dry. I doubt that Harry had time to escape the chamber, try and wash off the ink, and go to Dumbeldore's office. We see that stabbing the diary renders it powerless, so it can't have soaked up all the ink.
Continuity mistake: When Ginny runs downstairs to ask her mum for her jumper, the boys are eating breakfast at the table, Harry and Ron are sitting on one side, and directly opposite them are Fred, George and Percy sitting on the other side. When they are joined by Arthur Weasley, who sits at the head of the table, as he speaks to Harry and the boys we see the empty space, an unused knife and fork on Arthur's left hand side, though the twins were sitting there eating breakfast, as was seen previously. When Errol comes with the post, the twins are seen at the end of the table once again eating their breakfast, opposite Harry and Ron. (NOT visible on the DVD widescreen)
Audio problem: When Harry, Hermione and Ron discuss Tom Riddle and Hagrid's supposed link to the Chamber of Secrets Hagrid overhears something and asks if they were talking about him. Harry, Hermione and Ron all turn round and we hear them say, "No!" at the same time. If you watch carefully, Hermione says, "No!" slightly afterwards, but no sound comes out. The line has been dubbed so that they all say it in unison.
Continuity mistake: Hermione brews the Polyjuice potion, while she sits on the floor with her back to the sinks. When Ron says, "Lucius Malfoy must have opened it when he was at school here," Hermione sits close to the stone's edge on her right which is much closer to the pillar. As well as when Ron asks, "Why are we brewing this potion in broad daylight, in the middle of the girls' lavatory?" she sits closer to the pillar, at an angle. These differ from the other shots.
Continuity mistake: When we see Harry writing in Tom Riddle's diary, as he writes, the feather end of his quill is pointing to the right. But when we see the three close ups of Harry's hand writing the words, "Do you know anything about the Chamber of Secrets? Can you tell me?" in the diary, the feather end of the quill is pointing towards Harry.
Continuity mistake: When Errol is lying flat on his back on the table, in the close-up of Errol, Ron takes the Howler out of Errol's beak and the ribbon and seal on the Howler face away from Ron. In the next shot though, still in Ron's left hand as he lifts it, the ribbon and seal on the Howler now face Ron.
Continuity mistake: When Lucius Malfoy charges into Dumbledore's study, in the overhead shot as he says, "So it's true. You have returned," the diary is visible and it barely has a shadow on the desk, yet in the next shot, a close-up of Dumbledore, the diary casts a long shadow. When Lucius leaves, Harry begins to ask, "Sir...," in the overhead shot, the diary sits at the top of Dumbledore's desk, yet in the next shot, a close-up of the diary, it sits close to the bottom.
02:21:35 - 02:24:00Super Grover
Continuity mistake: When the Cornish pixies are released, in the close-up, Harry knocks his books onto the floor, Hermione knocks down her quill together with the books, then stands and grips the top of her desk, etc. However in the next wide shot, Harry does NOT knock his books to the floor, Hermione's quill remains on the desk though her books are down on the ground already, she grips the side, not the top, of her desk, etc.
Audio problem: When the boys sneak into the Weasley house, while Harry walks over to the clock, one of the other boys whispers, "Do you think it'd be alright if we had some of these?" meaning the biscuits on the table, to which another replies, "Yeah. Mum will never know." The problem is, none of the boys are mouthing any of these words.
Continuity mistake: When Harry, Ron, Fred and George arrive at the Weasley house, first in the wide shot as one twin enters the doorway, then in the next close-up as the rest enter and third, just before Ron takes a biscuit, the amount and arrangement of the biscuits differs in each shot.
Continuity mistake: In the Quidditch match that involves the tampered Bludger, just before he grabs the Snitch the Bludger hits his arm shattering the bone and making the arm guard fly off. For some reason the arm guard flew in the opposite direction from which the Bludger flew, which should be impossible. The Bludger came toward the screen, but the guard knocked away from the screen.
Continuity mistake: When Harry says, "Tom. Tom Riddle," the shot faces Harry and Ginny, and Ginny's foot is parallel to the ground. In the next shot facing Riddle, Ginny's foot is perpendicular to the ground. When Harry asks, "Are you a ghost?" Ginny's foot is parallel. When Riddle says, "As poor Ginny grows weaker...," her foot is perpendicular to the ground once more and so forth.
Continuity mistake: In Dumbledore's study, when Harry is handed Godric Gryffindor's sword, in the close-up the name written down the length of the sword is clean, with blood stains only below the name. Yet in the previous and following shots, the blood stains are much closer to the hilt of the sword where the name is.
Continuity mistake: When Lucius Malfoy tries to curse Harry, Dobby stands directly in front of Harry and says, "You shall not harm Harry Potter!" In the side shot of Lucius Malfoy being thrown, Harry is behind Dobby to his right and the grass with its shadow is visible. Though, in the next back shot Harry stands behind Dobby to his left and the grass is again visible, but with no shadow.
Continuity mistake: When Ron is in the Weasley fireplace, in the first wide shot he starts to take floo powder pinched between the tips of his fingers, yet, in the next close-up he takes a huge palmful of floo powder in his fist. Then in the next wide shot, he has it pinched at the tips of his fingers, however, in the next close-up as he says, "Diagon Alley!" he has a fistful of floo powder yet again.
Continuity mistake: When the car arrives at the Weasley's house, two white ducks are at a small pond, one in the water and one on the bank. From the overhead shot as the car lands, the grass directly around the pond is dry grass and the duck on the grass faces the house. In the next shot from the ground, the grass is very green and that duck faces the other way.
Continuity mistake: At Harry's bedroom window, the curved dirt line on the windshield is visible when Ron says, "Let's go," in the close-up, as the Ford Anglia begins to turn. In the next two shots as they pull away, the dirt line is different. When Ron yells, "Come on Harry, hurry up," and Harry passes Hedwig to Ron the dirt line is the same as the first shot. This goes back and forth in the remaining shots at the Dursleys.
Continuity mistake: After throwing Harry, Ron and everything else out of the car, Ron's door slams shut. In this close-up the gashes caused by the Whomping Willow are visible along the outside of the door. After the next overhead shot is another close-up of that door as the car speeds away. The gashes seen in this shot are completely different.
Continuity mistake: During Lockhart's dueling demonstration, as Harry speaks Parseltongue, the snake nears Justin Finch-Fletchley, in close-ups and wide shots until after Justin asks, "What are you playing at?" students including Susan, Ernie, etc., on Justin's left, alter their positions in consecutive shots. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Continuity mistake: In the Chamber of Secrets and afterwards, the stain on Harry's collar is constantly changing. Some examples are the close-up as Harry leans over Ginny saying, "Ginny, oh please don't be dead. Wake up!..." and the close-up when Harry says, "Why do you care how I escaped? Voldemort was after your time." Also, in the close-up when Harry is crouching trapped with his back up against the grate, as the blinded Basilisk comes toward him, and then as he stands and looks at the Basilisk slithering away, up the pipe.
Continuity mistake: As Ron and Harry watch in the background, Crabbe and Goyle hold cupcakes that change position, then start eating Hermione's cupcakes. When the close-up faces Crabbe, the little bit of cupcake in Goyle's hand is visible. However, when Goyle rolls his eyes up as he begins to fall backwards, the cupcake in his hand is nearly whole.
Continuity mistake: During the scene where Harry and Ron were looking for the Hogwarts Express, you can see that the bridge is fairly short. During the scene where Harry is clinging to the car, you can see that the train is still on the bridge even though the train would have been across it in about 4-5 seconds.
Continuity mistake: In the Whomping Willow, the car door on Harry's side recieves a large ripped gash through the metal, along with other assorted gashes alongside it, as is visible when it opens to throw Harry out. Later, when Ron and Harry escape from the spiders, the metal's ripped gash and other dents/gashes (although the initial damage can get worse in the Dark Forest, it cannot change positions) on Harry's door or elsewhere are not only very different than the earlier shots, they are also different within the consecutive shots of this scene.

Continuity mistake: In the Slytherine common room, when Harry and Ron are talking to Malfoy as Crabbe and Goyle, it isn't only Malfoy's hair that's changed. His voice is also higher pitched, suggesting this scene was filmed before his voice dropped, and he is also shorter and has a younger, chubbier face than in the scenes beforehand. Many of the scenes throughout the movie were shot out of sequence.
Other mistake: Near the end of the film, when Harry is leaning on the sink about to change into Goyle, we see his reflection in the mirror. In the reflection, it shows his face is starting to change and his skin is bubbling up, but his actual face (which we see part of in front of the mirror) is not changing at all.
Continuity mistake: At the Weasley table, twin 1 holds his Hogwarts letter and says, "This lot won't come cheap, mum," while twin 2 (who sits near Mr. Weasley) reaches in front of twin 1, to take his own Hogwarts letter that Percy hands him. In the next shot facing Harry and Ron, as twin 1 continues to say, "The spell books alone are very expensive," twin 2's hand reaches over twin 1 to get his Hogwarts letter from Percy, again, albeit a bit differently.
Continuity mistake: When Ron says, "Oh no! The invisibility booster must be faulty," the wipers are shiny chrome, as is the base of the center button between them. When Harry says, "We need to find the train," in the shot of Ron and Harry as the car begins to descend, the shiny chrome of the windshield wipers is GONE. In the Whomping Willow, Ron says, "My wand. Look..." the wipers and the base of the center button are all matte black now. After the tree smashes the windshield, in the next exterior shot, as the camera pans out while the boys scream, the front blue hood of car is seen and the entire wiper is GONE, whereas in the following shot the wiper is back. When the tree comes through the back window, in the front shots, the hood is seen again and the windshield wipers are GONE again. (Visible in DVD fullscreen format.)

Revealing mistake: The spectator towers nearest the castle cast shadows on the Quidditch pitch throughout the match, albeit differently in some shots. From within the pitch, when facing the castle, the towers that cast shadows are between Gryffyndor, the last tower on the left and Slytherin the last tower on the right. When Malfoy flies up from below the stands and slams to the ground he lands in front of the opposite side, with the black/white faculty towers, between Ravenclaw on one end and Hufflepuff on the other end, which do not cast shadows on the pitch. Yet, as Harry closes in on the Snitch with his broken arm, in the shot facing the Snitch as his left hand reaches out and in the next shot that faces Harry as he seizes the Snitch, the towers between Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff are the ones that cast shadows on the pitch.
Continuity mistake: After Dobby drops the cake on the woman's head, Harry's Uncle Vernon says something like "I'm sorry you'll have to forgive my nephew, he's very disturbed," and if you look at his face he's furious. In the next shot, if you look behind Harry you'll see Uncle Vernon acting very casually, and it looks like it's the same scene as when he was telling the joke to his guests.
Continuity mistake: As Aragog approaches Harry and Ron, Harry says, "Were friends of Hagrid's," and Harry carries the lantern palm side up, at his hip. Yet in the next shot, it's palm side down and the lantern handle is at his shoulder. In the next shot, though it's still at his shoulder it's palm side up now. Then in the two shots facing Aragog, the lantern is down low, but in between those two shots, in the shot facing Harry, his elbow is bent, the lantern is higher up and Fang stands further away.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where the Chamber finally opens, we first see Harry, Ron and Professor Lockhart from the front, and Harry and Ron are slightly behind Lockhart, and in a position to threaten and guard him. When you next see them a moment later from behind, Lockhart is behind them and they are in no position to guard him.
Continuity mistake: In the breakfast scene at the Weasleys' house, when Mrs Weasley tells her husband about his sons flying to Harry's house to rescue him, he has something on his fork. Then he asks Harry about rubber ducks, and he cuts up something else. But when he finishes, the only thing on his fork is the original item.
Continuity mistake: When Harry and Ron are talking to Myrtle when she said somebody threw a book at her she turns around and starts crying. If you look when she starts crying her face is all screwed up. When the camera angle changes when she stops turning and walks off, her face is no longer screwed up.
Continuity mistake: After being tossed out of the car, Ron and Harry chase after it when it drives off. In the wide shots, as they run through the outside corridor and when they stop at the arched doorway, their breath is visible in the air around them. Whereas their breath is not visible in the previous or following shots.
Other mistake: When Harry is talking to Dobby in his bedroom on Privet Drive, Dobby begins banging his head against the dresser to punish himself. If you look closely, you can see that there is a slight delay between the time that Dobby's computer-animated head appears to hit the dresser, the time you hear the thump, and the time when the drawer moves and the dresser shudders.
Revealing mistake: In Harry's bedroom, when Harry and Dobby grapple with the lamp, just as Harry says, "Give me the lamp!" Dobby's left hand is between both of Harry's hands gripping the lamp stem, but in the reflection we do not see Dobby's hand, or arm, as he moves about on the desk, nor do we see the fingers of his right hand which grips the base. In this shot what we do see in the reflection are Harry, his hands, the lamp base, stem, shade and cord. No Dobby.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Harry puts the sword through the head of the snake you can see that only about half a foot of the sword is covered with blood. Then later in Dumbledore's office, when he asks Harry to take a closer look at the sword, you can see that there is blood over almost the entire sword.

Other mistake: Dutch DVD Only: After the duel Harry tells he told the snake to keep away from Justin. In the subtitles, Justin's name appears untranslated. Later when Justin falls prey to the Basilisk he is called by name again but this time his name is translated to Dutch in the subtitles, namely "Joost".
Revealing mistake: While in the Whomping Willow, there is a shot from the interior of the car showing the windshield receiving two large cracks. In the next exterior shot, as the camera pans out while the boys scream, the blue hood of car is seen (with the lack of wiper blades) and the windshield has NO damage whatsoever, as well as when the tree limb comes through the back window, in the two front shots the blue hood is seen and the windshield is intact again.
Continuity mistake: When Harry is in the Weasley's car, Ron yells, "Drive!" and four shots later Uncle Vernon shouts, "No, no, no no no!" when he starts to fall out the window. As the car pulls away from the wall, Harry is not wearing his eyeglasses in this wide shot, though it's on in the previous and following shots. (Most viewers agree that in this shot it is Dan Radcliffe's double in the front seat of the car, who has a longer face than Radcliffe's smaller, rounder face, but that is not the issue of this specific mistake.)
Revealing mistake: When Lockhart says, "I must ask you not to scream. It might..," as he says, "Provoke them," the first shot is a close-up of Lockhart as he begins to remove the cloth. Next is a close-up of the cage as Lockhart reveals the pixies. Lockhart's face is clearly visible and it is not Kenneth Branagh who is mouthing the words, "Provoke them," that were already heard in the previous shot.
Continuity mistake: There are eleven vertical front bars on Harry's window, five on each side of the center bar. Ron attaches the hook to the bars on Harry's window and when he says "Let's go!" we see the hook between the third and fourth bar on the right. Yet in the next shot and also in the shot looking up as the bars fall, the hook is between the fifth and sixth from the right.
Continuity mistake: Ron and Harry drag their trunks and pets up the steps, to place with the other students' belongings. As Ron places his trunk near the others, the five strips of trim are clearly visible on his trunk, whereas when Ron's trunk is thrown out of the car it has only four strips of trim. Evidently NOT the same trunk.
Continuity mistake: When Dobby comes out of Harry's closet, he has a CG sock on his ear which he throws towards the dresser. The CG sock is not on the floor in the following two shots, although it should be, when the dresser and floor area around it is shown as Dobby says, "Harry Potter musn't be angry with Dobby," as well as when Dobby yells, "No!" and runs out.
Continuity mistake: Tom Riddle's uniform tie is different to the current ties in the first two Harry Potter films. Yet it matches the style of the students ties in the rest of the films. The mistake here is that Tom Riddle (at school) was before Harry's time at Hogwarts, but I guess when the costume department changed the ties, they didn't realise they should give Tom Riddle an older one as per the first two films.
Continuity mistake: During breakfast at the Weasleys, when Mr. Weasley asks, "What is the function of a rubber duck?" Ron turns his head toward Harry waiting for his response, but in the next shot Ron is looking down at his food, before they all turn their heads to look out the window at Errol.
Continuity mistake: When Harry has Tom Riddle's diary and starts writing into it, he writes "My name is Harry Potter". You can see by the way he writes it he doesn't put a full stop (period) at the end of the sentence. But in the next shot of the diary, there suddenly is a full stop there.

Other mistake: Just before Hermione gives Harry and Ron the two drugged cakes for Crabbe and Goyle in the food hall, snow is falling and to a fairly low level. In spite of this, and it being a continuous shot, as the camera lowers down, the snow ceases, but right at the end of the shot, the camera view raises up a significant amount where we should be able to see the falling snow again, but someone wanted to save pennies on the VFX budget, because the snow has gone.
