Donnie Darko

Visible crew/equipment: When Donnie and his Dad are in the car, talking, prior to nearly hitting Grandma Death, in the window behind Donnie's Dad is the reflection of a vehicle which says "Darko" clearly on it. There's also the reflection of a clapperboard on the backseat. (00:21:00)

Hamster

Continuity mistake: When Cherita makes her mark on the lifeline blackboard, there are some smudges on the broad chalk line. In the next shot, the line is perfect again. (00:41:30)

Phoenix

Continuity mistake: In the class with the Lifeline exercises, the "L" on the word "LOVE" changes how it is drawn about 4 or 5 times between shots. (00:38:50 - 00:40:35)

Deliberate mistake: In the shot near the end of the film where Donnie grabs the keys for the station wagon, you can see a Blockbuster Video member card in a cup. That card design wasn't used until the mid to late 1990's. This movie is set in 1988. Deliberate as it's a product placement, but still wrong. (01:37:10)

Audio problem: During the "Sparke Motion" dance scene, the dance instructor is mouthing the wrong words to the song the girls are dancing to. "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys was originally going to be the dance number, and that is actually the song playing for the recording of the scene. Richard Kelly couldn't get permission to use it, and "Notorious" by Duran Duran was substituted. The teacher is plainly mouthing words from the wrong song.

Continuity mistake: In the class with the Lifeline exercises, Cherita writes an 'X' on the board. In the next shot, the letter is fainter and less distinct. (00:41:30)

Dr Wilson

Continuity mistake: At the bus stop when Donnie says to his sister that he'll throw her doll in the garbage disposal, watch the red-headed girl next to her. The girl positions her head differently each shot. From the front, she's looking at Donnie, and behind she's looking at his sister. (00:16:10)

Continuity mistake: At the bus stop, Donnie's little sister changes positions between shots. From behind, she's in front of the red headed girl and in the frontal shot she's standing right next to her. (00:16:05)

Continuity mistake: In the scene near the beginning in which Donnie's dad is using the leaf blower, the trees are covered with very green leaves while the ground is covered in very colorful ones. There are no naked trees anywhere or trees with leaves that have changed, and, when considering the amount of leaves on the ground, there should be many. (00:03:15)

Revealing mistake: When Gretchen gets run over, you can tell that a dummy was used as the car's wheels pass over her. The position of her head changes between shots and her body seems a little too still for a living person who's just been run over. She should have been tossed a few feet or maybe even gotten caught under the car's wheels.

THGhost

Continuity mistake: In the scene where the students are asked to write "They made me do it" on the blackboard, Sam Bylan is called up just before Donnie, yet on the principal's checklist Cherita is before Donnie and after Sam. (Despite any deleted shots, this is still a mistake in the theatrical release.) (00:31:25 - 00:32:15)

Audio problem: In the first dinner scene, look closely at the way Eddie Darko's mouth moves as he laughs after the "What's a f***ass?" question from Samantha. He takes a bite of his pizza, and his mouth movements do not match the sound of his laughter.

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: They actually do match, anyone can laugh and not move that drastically, also he doesn't take a bite, he is on the verge of biting, simply pressing his teeth on the pizza.

Other mistake: Cherita has a speech impediment: instead of saying "shut up" she says "chut up." This is also reflected in the subtitles every time it happens EXCEPT at the bus stop, when it reads "shut up." (00:15:40)

Phoenix

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Donnie Darko and his sister are having a Halloween party, Donnie takes his girlfriend Gretchen upstairs while the song 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division is played. Watch closely as they ascend the stairs and keep an ear on the song as well. Somehow they manage to get all the way from the top of the stairs, to being sat down comfortably on a bed in someone's bedroom (with the door closed) without the audience hearing any interruption or 'jump' in the song whatsoever. This means they must have traversed the landing, entered the room and got properly sat down on the bed together in precisely no time at all. Quite a fitting mistake considering the movie's time travel theme. (01:28:10)

Factual error: When Donnie returns to his house to find a jet engine has landed on it, we see them lift the jet engine up with the crane. Yet his family, complete with 5 year old girl, are standing right in front of the crane. Plus workmen are milling around underneath and about 4 FAA officials come from inside the house. They are lifting a 2000lb jet engine, and all these people are allowed to wander around while it's 20ft above them?

Factual error: In Donnie’s front lawn of his home which is supposedly Middlesex, Virginia, there are two very noticeable Sago Palms. Sago Palms are subtropical plants that grow nowhere near Middlesex. This is a direct clue to the filming location of Southern California...and not Virginia, which receives some snowfall on an annual basis.

Continuity mistake: In the shot where Donnie is at the bus stop, if you look at the guy immediately to the right on Donnie, he is smoking a cigarette. The cigarette changes hands several times, once in a split second. (00:30:30)

Donnie: You are such a fuckass.
Elizabeth: Did you just call me a fuckass? You can go suck a fuck.
Donnie: Oh, please, tell me Elizabeth, how exactly does one suck a fuck?

Question: What was the message that Dr. Thurman was trying to say to Rose? She said she needs to talk to Rose for some reason. Why?

Answer: I think I can recall enough to answer. Dr. Thurman's most recent therapy session with Donnie resulted in her assessment that Donnie's condition had quickly deteriorated and he was (or might be) in imminent danger of hurting himself or engaging in some type of dangerous or violent or self-destructive behavior (or doing something bizarre, such as attempting time travel). Under hypnosis, Donnie admitted to Dr. Thurman that he "did it again" (flooded the school), burned down Cunningham's house because he had "kiddy porn", that "Frank" was going to kill someone, and the "sky was going to open up"; Donnie was also crying. Dr. Thurman wanted Rose to be aware and, undoubtedly, keep a close eye on Donnie and inform her immediately of any changes or behaviors of concern. Why Dr. Thurman would leave a telephone message under these circumstances and fail to immediately intervene or take preventive measures does not speak highly of her competence. I think showing the party before Dr. Thurman leaving the message left some viewers in the dark.
