Continuity mistake: When the hobbits are hiding under the tree trunk from the Ringwraith in the beginning, you can see space to the left and right of the tree above them. Logically when the Ringwraith walks past the tree you would see it on the right side of the tree first, then on the left, but you don't - it looks like it walks out of the tree instead of behind it. [Confirmed on the commentaries - Elijah Wood asks his fellow actors if anyone spotted the mistake: 'It kind of magically comes out of the tree'. Sean Astin: 'You mean it doesn't pass from the other side?' Wood: 'No, it comes out from the centre.']
Continuity mistake: As Boromir and Aragorn talk right before Boromir dies, you can see Boromir's right hand gripping Aragorn's left shoulder in the shot from behind Aragorn's right shoulder, but when the camera view changes to Boromir's perspective, looking up at Aragorn, his hand is not there. The scene goes back and forth between these two views several times.
Continuity mistake: In all five shots, the wax seal on the envelope with the ring is shaped differently. 1st- when Gandalf first seals the envelope with the melted wax. 2nd- when he hands the envelope to Frodo. 3rd- after Gandalf leaves, Frodo looks at the envelope. 4th- when Gandalf returns, Frodo finds the envelope in the trunk and hands it to him. 5th- when Gandalf tosses the envelope into the fire.

Continuity mistake: When the Fellowship meets in Rivendell, and Gimli tries to break the Ring with his axe, the axe breaks into many pieces on the platform upon which the Ring is laid. At first, the pieces are there in the close-up view. When the camera pans back for a long range view of the Fellowship, the pieces of the axe on the platform are gone. In the following close-up, the pieces magically reappear.
Continuity mistake: In the Amon Hen battle scene, at the start of the fight with Lurtz, Aragorn is slammed backwards against a tree knocking his sword out of his hand. There is then a shot of Lurtz throwing his shield at Aragorn, and in the following shot, where the shield pins Aragorn against the tree, his sword is still in his hand, only to fly out again on the shield's impact.
Continuity mistake: At Bilbo's party, when Merry and Pippin set off the dragon firework, they are shown inside a small tent. The tent has dishes and other things in it, and is quite full. When the firework launches, taking the tent with it, you can see that all of the things inside the tent (with the exception of Merry and Pippin) have disappeared.
Continuity mistake: When Gimli falls onto his knees in front of Balin's Tomb in Moria, in one shot he's a few feet in front of it, in the next he is so close to it, that he could lay his head onto the tomb. In the following shot Gimli is further away again, so he should not have been able to reach it with his head.
Continuity mistake: When Frodo tells Sam about the Wood Elves, they both run up the hill and crouch behind a fallen log. In the shot of their backs and the elves in the background, Frodo is on the right side and Sam on the left. In the previous shot of their faces, Frodo was also on the right and Sam on the left. Extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: As Sam, Merry and Pippin run across the grass towards the Bucklebury Ferry, they have two shadows; bold ones behind them, presumably meant to be from the moon, but also unexplained faint ones to their right. (This is before they pass the cottage, so it can't be light from the weak lamps hanging outside.) When Frodo is then pursued by the wraith his shadow is in front of him, yet he is running in the same direction as the other hobbits were.
Continuity mistake: After Lurtz releases his first arrow at Boromir, one of the Hobbit stand-ins is seen to Boromir's left, throwing stones. The next shot is of Merry and Pippin standing close together, looking at Boromir to their left - they have moved position to the other side of him.
Continuity mistake: Just before Frodo is stabbed by the Troll, 2 buttons are closed on his vest. When he's stabbed, 1 button is closed. When Aragorn rolls him over, after being stabbed, he has an open vest. It remains open until being surrounded by the Orcs in the great hall. Gandalf says, "This foe is beyond any of you. Run!" and Frodo's scale double has his vest fully buttoned. Just after Gandalf yells to Aragorn, "Swords are of no more use here," Frodo has only 2 buttons closed. Then as the stairs are collapsing under Frodo and Aragorn's feet, his vest is mostly buttoned again.

Continuity mistake: When Boromir attacks him, Frodo frantically slips the Ring onto his middle finger (with the chain). Yet, as Frodo runs up the steps of the ruins, Boromir yells, "Frodo, I'm sorry!" and Frodo wears the Ring on his index finger. He is terrified, so as to remain invisible he does not change fingers.
01:15:30 - 01:16:35Super Grover
Continuity mistake: Boromir gets hit by Lurtz's second arrow, drops down to his knees in front of Merry and Pippin, gathers strength, turns around and stabs an Uruk. In the next wide shot and close-up, he stands and is about to stab an Uruk in the back and the two arrows in his chest are there. Yet, in the next wide shot, as his blade is going down into the Uruk, Boromir has only the lower arrow in him, the one near his shoulder is NOT there, for 23 frames. In the next close-up, the upper arrow is back. These arrows are NOT CGI.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf pulls Sam in through the window at Bag End and throws him on the desk to ask him questions, several items fall off of the desk. The scene switches back and forth between Sam and Gandalf's perspectives several times. When Sam is shown, the arrangement and appearance of items on the floor below vary. In some shots there is a wooden box and book on the floor to the left side of Sam's head and/or a book and paper to the right.
Continuity mistake: Saruman's Orcs are busy tearing down trees for firewood. In the second shot of this scene you will notice that one of the Orcs in the central foreground falls on his backside as the tree hits the ground. A few shots later, the same group of Orc's are pulling down the same tree, just filmed from a different angle. You can see the Orc falling down once again, this time on the left hand side, behind a burning brazier.
Continuity mistake: At Dwarrowdelf, as Gimli runs into the Chamber of Mazarbul toward Balin's Tomb, just past the doorway we see a long stick and a very short axe leaning on the right wall. Later when Legolas says, "Orcs!" Boromir runs to the door and now we see a long handle axe with the big blade on top, leaning on that same wall. This does not refer to the two axes in the corner.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf meets Frodo for the first time and gives him a ride into Hobbiton on his wagon you can see that at the start of the sequence his wizard's staff is near Frodo's shoulder. In the back shot as they go over the bridge and another shot, the staff is to the rear of the wagon. In the very next shot, a close up, the staff has reappeared near Frodo's shoulder again. Also, as Gandalf goes up the hill in front of Bag End, his staff is sticking out the back of the wagon, but in the following close-up as he stops the wagon, the staff is right next to him. Other contents of the wagon also change position during the journey.
Continuity mistake: Gandalf and Frodo ride towards Bag End. 1st, Frodo says, "Half the Shire's been invited," the scarf is hanging on the lantern. 2nd, Bilbo in voice over says, "Life in the Shire goes on..." riding over the bridge, there is no scarf on the lantern. 3rd, Bilbo continues, "But things are made to endure in the Shire," there is a scarf hanging on the lantern. 4th, as Bilbo continues saying, "Passing from one generation to the next," the scarf is not on the lantern. 5th, Gandalf says, "If you're referring to the incident..." there is a scarf on the lantern once again. 6th, coming up the hill, as he pulls up to Bag End, there is no scarf on the lantern, yet again.
Continuity mistake: When Haldir says, "Welcome Legolas, son of Thranduil," the outfit that Legolas wears is not the same in these shots than in the previous and following shots. Gimli's hair/beard are not as full and his prosthetics are a bit different too. Apparently this scene was one of the first to be filmed, but they realized later that this outfit wasn't working for the role of Legolas, so they changed it. Commentary on extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: During Arwen's race to the Ford of Bruinen, she rides at least two different horses. The first horse seen is a lovely grey (white and black hairs) and is likely to be of Andalusian descent. The second horse is a fleabitten grey (white with red hairs) with COMPLETELY different hind-end conformation and muscling, and looks as if it is an Arabian. The switch occurs several times. If you aren't a horse person, you can see this change by watching the horses' necks. The first horse has a very thick neck, and the second horse's neck is much thinner.
Continuity mistake: After the battle at Amon Hen, Frodo rescues Sam from drowning and pulls him into the boat. During their dialog in the boat, you can see that the boats' stern is pointed toward the bank of the river. There is one brief view of them from the riverbank where the side of the boat is facing the riverbank.
Continuity mistake: Just before the scene changes to Saruman on top of Orthanc, the shot zooms out from the Fellowship attempting to climb Caradhras. Legolas (recognizable as, being an Elf, he is standing on top of the snow) is to Gandalf's left. When the scene resumes he has moved back some distance to Gandalf's right, closer to the rest of the Fellowship. The camera pans upwards as the avalanche falls and as we follow its descent, Legolas runs out from Gandalf's left to pull him clear. Even for an Elf that's a lot of quick, (and unnecessary), movement.
Continuity mistake: When Saruman and Gandalf start to battle at Orthanc, the first time Gandalf points his staff, he causes Saruman to slam onto his back. In the close-up of Saruman, the white wrap around the palm of his hand and wrist is perfectly visible on his right hand. He does not wear the wrap on his hand in the previous and most of the following shots.
Continuity mistake: Aragorn stabs Lurtz in his thigh and in the first shot the long handle is sticking way out in front. Next shot, the knife's long handle is NOT seen anywhere above Lurtz's knee - his hand would not be able to cover the very long handle and in the same shot, Aragorn's already put his hand down. Yet in the next shot, Lurtz punches Aragorn in the face and Aragorn's hand is still at Lurtz's leg. Next, Aragorn rolls over and in the side wide shot of Lurtz going closer to Aragorn, we should be able to see, but DON'T see, the long knife handle in front or blade in back, protruding from anywhere in his right thigh. Only after he lifts Aragorn, headbutts him and punches him down, we see the knife handle and blade protruding from Lurtz's leg.
Continuity mistake: At Balin's Tomb, in two shots Pippin backs up towards the stone well, and when the skeletal head falls into the well we see a part of the sticks behind the pail, lying on the well. In the shot from above as the body falls in, and in the close-up of the chain and pail falling in, the sticks aren't there. In the next shots of the stone well we see the sticks lying there.
Continuity mistake: At Amon Hen, just after Boromir blows the Horn again, in the two wide shots, Pippin holds his sword with his right hand. In the next close-up, Pippin holds it in his left hand. Also seen behind Pippin in this close-up, is Boromir's sword already sticking up out of an Uruk. In the very next wide shot, showing Pippin jumping onto an Uruk, seen between Pippin and the Uruk, is Boromir's sword in the body and Boromir is just removing his hand from it.
Continuity mistake: At the end of the Amon Hen battle scene, where Boromir has been shot by Lurtz, there is a close-up of Lurtz's feet (as if from Boromir's POV) showing Lurtz striding over and stopping in front of him. The ground is clear all around his feet. The shot then changes to a wide shot, from the side, and there are orc corpses piled up all around. None of these were visible before, but should have been.
Continuity mistake: Right at the end, Aragorn is telling Legolas and Gimli, "Let us hunt some Orc." In the two close-ups of Legolas that follow, the colour of the feathers on his arrows are light green, differing from the Mirkwood arrows he always carries. These close-ups were shot as pickups, months after filming ended. Commentary, extended DVD.
Continuity mistake: At Balin's Tomb, in the first shot Boromir's right wrist is caught up on the Troll's chain and he's holding his shield with his left hand. In the second shot, the Troll flings Boromir across towards the wall, and as Boromir is flying across, he is not holding his shield. In this next shot, as soon as Boromir hits the wall, he has the shield in his left hand again.
Continuity mistake: When the four Hobbits run out of the corn field, Pip stops short at the edge and there's a shot of the slope below. Next shot, when Merry and Frodo push up behind Pippin, Sam appears directly behind Merry, to his right, and stands there looking down. Yet, in the next side shot, from far behind, Sam is still running up to the rest of them, as his head is turned looking over his left shoulder. He then ends up on the opposite side from the first shot, to Frodo's left.
Continuity mistake: When the Hobbits enter Bree through the gate, there is a distance shot from above, and the principal actors have clearly been replaced by their shorter doubles. Worse than that, however, is that their sizes are completely wrong. The last Hobbit through the gate is stocky - much stockier than any of the Hobbits really are. And he isn't even supposed to be Sam, who is the stockiest of the Hobbits. When the view switches to a close-up of the principal actors from inside the gate, it's actually Merry who's last - and he certainly isn't stocky.
Continuity mistake: Having just arrived on shore at Amon Hen, in the first shot Legolas says, "It is not the eastern shore that worries me." Then as he says, "Something draws near", his hair lies differently at his shoulders. In the next shot, as he says, "I can feel it", his hair now lies the same as in the first shot.
Continuity mistake: When Frodo rescues a drowning Sam, once Sam is in the boat, when the camera faces Sam, it is clear that the boat remains perpendicular to the shoreline, as they speak and hug. However, in the wide shot of them hugging, the boat is parallel to the shore. Another close-up on Sam and the boat is still perpendicular to the shoreline. In the next wide shot, they row away, and head for the Eastern shore.
Continuity mistake: When Arwen is carrying Frodo to the Ford, during the close-up of his face, it is covered in a green slime/pus-type substance (coming out of his eyes and mouth). At the Ford when Arwen confronts the Black Riders, his face is clean. [Peter Jackson has stated that the pus was used in one scene and afterwards they decided it was too gross and didn't use it again. That's why it appears and disappears. Still a mistake though.]
Continuity mistake: After Frodo runs from Boromir, invisible and wearing the Ring on his right hand, he sees the Eye. As he starts to fall, with his left hand he pulls the Ring off the finger of his right hand. Yet, in the next shot still falling, now visible, we see his right hand closed in a fist and when he lands on the ground, he's clutching the Ring in his right hand.
Continuity mistake: When Bilbo is writing at his desk, in the first far shot, the book stand to his right has an assortment of papers on it. In the shot from behind, when he starts to say, "Concerning Hobbits," the papers on that book stand are arranged differently. In the shot after another Hobbit picks his ear, Bilbo stretches at his desk and the papers on the stand are arranged differently again. Later still, when he says, "Sticklebacks, where is that boy?" in this shot, the papers revert to the way they were in the other previous close-up shot from behind. In the next shot from behind too, the papers are arranged the same way as in the first far shot.
Continuity mistake: At Balin's Tomb, after Gimli kneels and cries, "Oh no! No!" there is an overhead shot of the room. In this shot we see the papers littering the floor around the tombstone. Next we see an extreme close-up of the tombstone, with the skeletal head to its left and the absence of papers around it. Then, in a close-up of the skeleton holding the book, we see papers again, but they are lying about differently than in the overhead shot. Then in the next shot as Gandalf hands Pippin his hat and staff, the papers are the same again, as in the previous overhead shot.
Continuity mistake: When Bilbo is leaving, he drops the Ring at the doorway, turns and walks out the door. Gandalf steps outside after him. Gandalf never pulls at the door, nor does he even touch it. He stands outside talking with Bilbo. When the door is shown behind Gandalf it is wide open. Bilbo walks down the path with Gandalf looking at him. The next shot is a close-up and we see the shadow of the door opening to reveal the Ring. Then a shot looking up at Gandalf as he steps through the doorway.
00:23:40 - 00:24:30
Continuity mistake: Gandalf and Frodo ride towards Bag End and in the close-up as Frodo says, "Never had any adventures or did..." they pass the stone wall to his right. In the next wide shot, Gandalf says, "If you're referring to the incident..." and they ride further away from the stone wall, then pass the huge tree on Frodo's right. However in Frodo's next close-up, they're closer to the stone wall and haven't passed the huge tree yet.
Continuity mistake: At Bag End, with his left hand Bilbo holds a plate with pieces of a sponge cake. The small part of the sponge cake is to the left of his thumb, and the large part is opposite his thumb. When there is knocking at the door, the smaller piece is to the right of his thumb. When he's at the window, the smaller piece is to the left again. As he runs into the kitchen, the large part of the sponge cake is now by his thumb. The plate never switched hands.
Continuity mistake: When Boromir blows the Horn of Gondor in the close-up (the second time he is seen doing it), slung around his neck are both sides of the horn's attached rope in front of his torso, as he drops the horn to grasp the sword with both hands to fight the Uruk beside him. In the following shots it varies, the horn is either slung over the same way or it is slung over his shoulder, with one side of the rope at his back!
Continuity mistake: At Amon Hen while battling the Uruk-hai, Legolas yells to Aragorn, "Aragorn, go." In the next far wide shot, we see Aragorn run between the statue and Legolas, reaching the pillar. In the very next close-up, Aragorn is just running past the statue on his left, as Legolas kills two Uruks with one arrow.
Continuity mistake: During the prologue, after Isildur cuts off Sauron's fingers, in the first side shot, Isildur, who is lying on the ground looks to his left at the Ring on the finger near him. His hair is on his face and nose. Then, in the very next front shot, *before* the wind gust from Sauron, he is still lying down and there is no hair on his face.
Continuity mistake: When Frodo and Sam are in the field with the scarecrow, in the close up shot they're a lot closer together than in the wider shot. Nothing to do with perspective - check out the amount of green corn in front of Frodo in the two shots. The scarecrow also changes place and it's sometimes next to some corn and sometimes not.
Continuity mistake: In the sequence of the first 'meeting' with the Nazgul, where the four Hobbits hide under a tree root and the Black Rider is above them, sniffing the presence of the ring, the closeup of supposed Frodo's hands shows hands with 'normal' fingernails, dirty but normal. In the following scene, after the four Hobbits jump and run, Frodo's hand holding the ring is his 'real' hand, with short, bitten fingernails, as we can see in the rest of the movie when his hands are visible. (Extended DVD).
Continuity mistake: Before the Black Rider rides up to the man chopping wood, in the close-up the tree stump he's chopping on does not have wood in front of it on the ground. In the wide shot, there is wood lying on the ground in front of the stump and the man places the axe down against the stump. After he answers the Black Rider and says, "That way," the axe is not leaning on the stump anymore, but there is a piece of wood on it now.
Continuity mistake: In Balin's tomb, just before the Orcs break in and the fight begins, watch the Hobbits behind Gandalf. In the front view, they are huddled together in close proximity. When the shot changes to the rear view, you can only see two Hobbits (Pippin and Sam) behind Gandalf because they are much more spaced out. When the camera comes back to the front view, they are close together again.
Continuity mistake: At Dwarrowdelf, when Gimli runs into the Chamber of Mazarbul with Balin's Tomb, once inside seen to his left is a big stone with corpses and armor on and around it. When they hear the Orcs, Boromir runs to the door and we see the same big stone again. That stone and some of the corpses are positioned very differently in both of these shots.

Continuity mistake: When Frodo finally sees Bilbo in Rivendell he opens the Red Book and reads the title page, "There and Back Again..." The handwriting on the page in this close-up is different than when it is first seen at the start of the film, when Bilbo first writes it.
Continuity mistake: The braids over Legolas' ears on his scalp, change drastically in position, shape, amount and how it is braided, as well as the amount of his side hair that is swept up into the back braid, in consecutive scenes or shots. It's impossible for him to change his hair between the following shots. At Balin's Tomb, after Pippin's carelessness, when Legolas turns around with Aragorn to look at the door. When he aims his arrow at the door, waiting for Orcs. When he lets loose the last arrow into the Troll's mouth. After leaving the chamber, when Gandalf says, "A Balrog of Morgoth." When he leaps across the broken stairs. Catching Aragorn after Aragorn drops from the broken stairs. While he stands outside Moria, after losing Gandalf.

Continuity mistake: Frodo is getting ready to leave Bag End - Gandalf says "Travel by day, and stay off the road" and hands Frodo his walking stick. The black grip on the walking stick that Gandalf hands to Frodo is close to the top of the stick. In the next shot, the walking stick that Frodo takes hold of has a black grip that is way lower from the top of the stick. Each actor filmed individually.
Continuity mistake: In the side shot as Sam slams into the other three Hobbits from behind who are standing at the edge of the cliff, Frodo is standing farther out with his arm outstretched and Sam grabs hold of the pack on Frodo's back as they start to go down. In the next front shot Frodo is now sandwiched between Sam, Merry and Pippin, and Sam's hand is now holding onto Pippin's arm as they go down. This is not because of Sam's momentum, pushing on Frodo. In the two shots, Frodo's body position is simply different.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf is riding in the wagon with Frodo, the children yell for fireworks behind them. He then shoots off some fireworks, and the children start to jump for joy. In these consecutive shots, the arrangement of the children differ in the shot from behind and in the shot of them from the front. The girl with the straw hat moves positions, when the children are all stationary. The girl with the long golden hair also differs with her arms between the two successive shots.
Continuity mistake: Gandalf grabs Sam through the window, and just as he's throwing Sam down we see on the table's edge many books, papers, a candlestick and a plate. Yet in the earlier shot of the table, when Frodo comes from the kitchen holding the Ring and stands in the archway saying, "We never speak of it again," the corner of the table has a cutting board with bread, some papers and a candlestick showing. It is the same table and no one has touched the table.
00:39:40 - 00:42:15Super Grover
Continuity mistake: The Troll throws Boromir across the room at Balin's Tomb, and when Boromir hits the wall he then crashes to the floor. In the first shot Boromir shakes his head and spit flies out of his mouth, landing on his coat at his right and left shoulders, making them wet. An Orc then lifts his knife to stab him. In the next shot only the left side of Boromir's coat is wet. Aragorn then throws his sword at the Orc. Then in the next shot as Boromir sits up and shakes his head again, now both sides of his coat are dry.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf and Frodo are speaking in the wagon as they're riding towards Bag End, Gandalf says, "How is the old rascal?" There is no pipe in his mouth, his hands are holding the reins and they are just riding past stone walls. Gandalf continues to say in the very next shot, "I hear it's going to be a party of special magnificence," and the pipe is now in his mouth and there is another long stone wall reaching far behind the wagon to their right. Gandalf was mid thought, they didn't have time between shots to pass so much wall. This whole sequence of shots was filmed two ways, with Gandalf smoking his pipe and with Gandalf not smoking, but sucking on caramels. In editing they took certain shots of both.
Continuity mistake: As Frodo stands by the shore holding the Ring in his hand in the opening wide shot, the oar is seen lying lengthwise in the boat, atop all the gear inside. However, after remembering Gandalf's words Frodo walks towards the boat, but the oar is not lying in the boat as it was in the earlier shot. We see all the gear in the boat, but the large distinctive leaf shape oar is not atop any of the gear as previously seen. We do, however, see the very tip of the handle sticking out the right side of the boat, just as Frodo climbs in.

Continuity mistake: At Bag End, the table opposite the fireplace with the two oval portraits changes in the variety and arrangement of all the objects on it, seen in shots that are supposed to take place right after each other. In the first shot, when Bilbo packs and then takes his bag off the table, we see what is on the table. The second shot, when Gandalf stands to confront Bilbo to leave the Ring, the table is seen to his right and we see what is on the table. The third shot, when Gandalf sits by the fireplace and waits for Frodo to come back from the party, the table is to his left and again we see what is on the table. The objects differ in every shot.

Continuity mistake: As Boromir blows the Horn again at Amon Hen, in the first wide shot, he's battling an Uruk. In the close-up, he slices the whole arm off that Uruk, just under his shoulder, which starts to spurt, and the dismembered arm isn't seen. In the next wide shot, we see the whole arm of that Uruk still there and he is just dropping his sword out of his hand, then falls to the ground.
Continuity mistake: When the Troll breaks through the doorway at Balin's Tomb Legolas lets loose an arrow at his right shoulder. As the Troll stomps towards Sam the arrow is seen, then disappears, then seen again. When the Troll lifts up his mace the arrow is not seen, but when the mace is at the Troll's shoulder the arrow is there and the chain goes right through the arrow. As he tries to slam the mace down onto Sam the chain goes right through the arrow again. As Sam dives between the Troll's legs the arrow disappears and then reappears again.
Continuity mistake: The Fellowship wait for the Orcs and Troll to break through the Chamber of Mazarbulat's door (with Balin's Tomb). In the wide close-up shot of the door we see the two large axes lying across the top of the door handles, and two spears leaning against the doors. Gimli says "There is one Dwarf yet in Moria who still draws breath" and we see the doors in the background with no spears leaning on them. In the close-up again the spears are there. In the next extreme close-up the large axes' handles are lying across the doors behind one another. There is yet another extreme close-up and now the large axes' handles are lying across the doors on top of each other. In the next wide shot the Orcs break through the doors and the left door starts to crookedly come down. Then in the next shot the doors are just now being broken through, only this time the left door comes straight down.
Continuity mistake: At Bilbo's party, in the first shot Merry hoists Pippin up into the back of Gandalf's wagon. We see the arrangement of the assorted things in the back of the wagon. In the next front shot, as Pippin dives into the wagon we see a different arrangement of all those things in the back of the wagon.
Continuity mistake: As Bilbo is writing, in the close-up shot of Bilbo dipping his quill into the ink well the arrangement of the ink well, other bottles and various items on the shelf differs from the next close-up shot when he stretches at his desk and calls out, "Frodo, someone at the door!"
Continuity mistake: At Bilbo's party, as the fireworks dragon flies overhead, in the close-up shot, when Frodo calls out, "Bilbo!" the two people behind Frodo were not there in the wide shot just before this shot. This is not due to any Hobbits running. Also in that wide shot, Bilbo moves to Frodo's immediate left, but in that close-up he's away from Frodo, so Frodo has to move closer to him in this shot.
Continuity mistake: At Amon Hen, when Merry and Pippin realize that Frodo needs to leave, they start jumping up and down and shouting to get the attention of the Uruk-hai. While they jump up and down, in the back shot, Pippin is behind Merry, but in the front shot, Pippin is in front of Merry.
Continuity mistake: In the first close-up shot of Bilbo writing the words "Concerning Hobbits" in his book, the formation of the letters in the words "Concerning Hobbits" are written differently in this close-up than it is in the next close-up, when it shows he has finished nine lines on the page.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf reaches Bag End, in the wide shot while he's still in the wagon we don't see certain things that are seen in the next close-up shot when Gandalf stands at the front door. Seen in the close-up, the short small pink and purple flowers that are located on the ground to the right and left of the front door. Also, the large tall pink flowers growing against the wall to the left of the door seen behind Gandalf in this shot.
Continuity mistake: Frodo pours tea and begins talking with Gandalf in the kitchen. In Frodo's shots, the drape of the white cloth on the right side of the fireplace changes. In the shots where the white cloth is different there is also a sack on Frodo's left that is not there in other shots. Behind Gandalf, the white cloth that hangs from the hook on the hutch also changes its shape and length between the side, front and close-up shots.
Continuity mistake: Haldir, Aragorn and Legolas are standing looking out in this front close-up shot, as Haldir says, "Caras Galadhon." In the next wide shot from behind, as Haldir's voice is heard saying, "The heart of Elvendom on earth," it is blatantly obvious that it is Morgan Evans's (O. Bloom's double) profile near Haldir - note his height and cheek/jaw line.
Continuity mistake: Pippin is falling down the hill after the incident with Farmer Maggot. In the shot from above, we see he is about to land with his chest right on top of the pile of dung. Yet, in the successive side shot of him, the dung is obviously not beneath his body, and we see in the next shot of his face, that the dung is now in front of his face, for him to remark, "Oh, that was close!"
Continuity mistake: After Gandalf arrives at Bag End, in the wide shots looking through the doorway of the kitchen, the white cloth on the mantle over the fireplace hangs twice the length as it does in the next close-up, when Bilbo says, "I can make you some eggs if you'd-" Then, while they're in the kitchen, the white cloth hangs longer again.
Continuity mistake: After diverting the Uruk-hai at Amon Hen, Pippin and Merry run. Just before Boromir comes to their rescue, in the far shot, they are seen running over a stone bridge and Pippin is in front of Merry. In the very next close-up, Merry is running in front of Pippin.
Continuity mistake: At the Council of Elrond, as Frodo puts the Ring on the stone table, the bottom of both sides of Legolas' cloak are on his knees. As Gandalf says, "For the Black Speach of Mordor, may yet be heard," the bottom right of Legolas' cloak is between his legs. As Boromir says, "Long has my father, the Steward of Gondor, kept the forces of Mordor at bay," the bottom right of Legolas' cloak is now at his side. When Aragorn says, "You can not wield it, none of us can," the bottom right of Legolas' cloak is between his legs. Just before Legolas rises to say, "This is no mere Ranger," the bottom of both sides of Legolas' cloak are on his knees again.
Continuity mistake: After finding Sam under the window Gandalf throws Sam on the table. In some shots Sam's shoulders are at the edge of the table and in some, it's not. Under Sam's shoulders on the table in some shots, there are assorted papers that change position and in two shots no paper at all. In the shot from the front, where Gandalf is slamming Sam down, the candle shown is much shorter than the candle shown in the other shots.
Continuity mistake: When Aragorn speaks with Frodo near the stairs at Amon Hen, the greenery sticking out of the indivial steps in these shots differ and actually change their position on the stairs significantly, after Aragorn yells, "Run!" and then walks toward the many Uruk-hai.
01:17:50 - 01:18:30Super Grover
Continuity mistake: Just after Gandalf enters Bag End for the first time he looks the map of Middle Earth on the table. In first shot when he is grabbing the map, you can see that there are two scrolls and a flat empty paper stacked on the map. In next shot, there is only one scroll and a paper with some kind of pattern on it.
Continuity mistake: In the shot just after Saruman is communicating with the palantir, Saruman is sitting at his desk. On his desk in the foreground is one candelabra, with a black short vase next to it. In the next shot from behind Saruman we see the candelabra and black vase, but we also see the thin candles of a second four stem candelabra on the desk. Do not confuse those four thin even height candles with the broad pillar candles under the window in the next front shot of Saruman.
Continuity mistake: Gandalf and Bilbo sit on the bench outside of Bag End smoking and in the distance is the Party Tree, the tents and party lights, etc. from Bilbo's party. During the party, Bilbo is speaking with the lights above him and the position of various tents are shown during the entire celebration. Later, invisible Bilbo comes to the gate at Bag End and the Party Tree with all the tents surrounding it are seen (minus the tent that the rocket took and the tent that the 'dragon' burned). The position and arrangement of some tents, lights, etc. are different in all of these shots.
Continuity mistake: The Fellowship stand at the ready at Balin's Tomb, looking towards the door that is barred with the axes. There are also two spears, but nothing else is leaning on the two doors. In the shot right after Gimli says, "Let them come," this shot shows them all from behind. As Legolas and Aragorn step away from each other, the door is seen and leaning on the door to the left is Boromir's shield, who is standing to the left of the screen minus a shield. Boromir does not move. In the next shot of the door the shield isn't there and in the next shot of Boromir, he's holding his shield.
Continuity mistake: At the Council of Elrond, the first time Frodo says, "I will take it," in the back shot of Gandalf as he argues with Boromir there is a grey cloaked Elf behind him. In the next front wide shot of Gandalf, the green cloaked Elf stands behind him to his right. As Frodo repeats, "I will take it," then says, "I will take the Ring to Mordor," Gandalf turns around and the grey cloaked Elf is behind him. The Council scene took five days to shoot and there were many different variations of the same shots.
Continuity mistake: At Bag End while speaking with Gandalf, Bilbo packs his bag and he puts his pipe into it. The mouthpiece goes into the bag with the bowl part sticking out of the bag. Yet, when Gandalf asks, "Is that so hard?" the mouthpiece is now sticking out of the bag and the bowl part is in the bag.
Continuity mistake: Boromir is blowing the Horn of Gondor, Aragorn is running to him, fighting Uruk-Hai on the way. At one point he stabs one through the stomach and is chased closely by three Uruk-Hai. When he slices another in the leg and then the neck, the three chasing closely behind him aren't in these two shots. They were too close to Aragorn not to be seen in those two shots.
Continuity mistake: Pippin causes the skeletal body to fall into the well at Balin's Tomb. When the head falls in, Pippin spins around and behind him we see the body start to fall in and the pail is right next to the body. In the close-up shot of the body falling into the well the pail is not on the well. Then in the next few shots the pail is yet again sitting on the stone well showing the chain and pail falling into the well.
Continuity mistake: During the prologue, in the first shot of Sauron's dismembered finger with the Ring on the ground next to Isildur, the bottom of the letters are facing the remaining finger. It is the line, "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them." In the next close-up of the dismembered finger, when Isildur picks it up, the Ring is now on the finger upside down from the previous shot, with the bottom of the letters facing the cut side of the finger. The words, "One Ring to find them," can be seen in this shot.
Continuity mistake: In the scene in Isengard, when the Orcs are digging the Uruk-Hai out of the mud, it shows a Uruk-Hai grabbing the throat of an Orc. When he first grabs him, and it shows the Uruk-Hai, its got relatively clean shoulders. When it shows him again, there are piles of mud on his shoulders and chest. Than when it shows him standing up, there is no mud on his shoulders or chest, but he is covered in slime.
Continuity mistake: At Amon Hen, Merry and Pippin run from the Uruk-hai after distracting them from Frodo's escape. After they run over the bridge, the next shot is of the two of them stopping short when Merry sees more oncoming Uruk-hai. In this shot it is only Pippin's Elven brooch that is facing the opposite way it normally faces.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf says, "Mellon," the doors to Moria open and they all go in. Legolas soon picks up an arrow and says, "Goblins!" When he does so, we see the left long braid is loose at the end and coming undone. After Boromir shouts, "Legolas!" in the close-up we see the perfectly made long braid hanging down.
Continuity mistake: During Bilbo's party, in the first shot, as Merry boosts Pip onto the back of the wagon, on the table in front of the tent there are pears, oranges and apples on it. Once Pippin is in the wagon, seen behind Merry, there is one red apple that has appeared at the front of the table to the left of the other fruit that wasn't there before.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf and Elrond are talking about Frodo and his ability to withstand the power of the Ring, when the camera is in wide view you can see Gandalf holding his pipe in his hand with the stem near his chin, when the camera angle changes to a close up view of Gandalf the stem is nowhere to been seen. It happens about 4 times during the entire scene as the camera angle changes.
Continuity mistake: At the well near Balin's Tomb there is a shot from above and it shows the body falling along with some chain, but some chain still remains on top. In the next close-up of the chain there is much more chain sitting on top of the well that has yet to fall in. The amount and position of the chain sitting on the well in these two shots differ greatly. Also in the second shot from inside the well looking up a good amount of pail should be seen over the ledge of the well, but it is not.
Continuity mistake: When Frodo rescues Sam he grabs hold of his wrist and pulls him into the boat. In the shot in which Frodo grabs hold of the side of the boat with his left hand while pulling Sam into the boat with his right hand, we see the large brown mat on the floor of the boat. In this shot the mat is under Frodo's legs and Sam's sword is not at all under his cloak. In the following shot behind Frodo as Sam is trying to sit up the mat is not under Frodo's legs but only under Sam, and Sam's sword is now entirely under his cloak.
Continuity mistake: At the Council of Elrond, when Merry and Pippin run up and yell, "We're coming too. You'll have to send us home tied up in a sack to stop us!" Elrond's eye contact does not line up with the Hobbits, as they run past him towards Frodo. Then in the Hobbits' close-up, their height reaches just under Gandalf's and Legolas' shoulders, but in the wide shot the Hobbits are much, much, shorter.
Continuity mistake: In Farmer Maggot's field, when Merry and Pippin drop in on Frodo, in the first shot, as they are bending down lifting the vegetables off the ground, Merry and Pip are standing side by side, Merry on Pippin's right. Opposite them are Frodo and Sam, with Sam on Frodo's right. In the next shot, when they're upright, Frodo and Sam are across from each other, as are Merry and Pippin, with Pippin on Sam's left. In the next shot, Pippin is now on Sam's right. The change in positions has nothing to do with Merry and Pippin lifting the vegetables off the ground.
Continuity mistake: After Frodo rescues a drowning Sam and Sam declares that he made a promise not to leave Frodo, they embrace. In the first two close-ups, Frodo is clutching Sam's shoulder with his right hand, and his right arm doesn't go all the way around Sam's back. In the far wide shot, Frodo's arms go over Sam's shoulder and reach all the way around Sam's back in a tight hug. In the very next close-up, they are in the exact same positions as in the previous close-up. Since these are successive shots, the excuse can not be made that in the wide shot, Frodo put his arm around Sam differently.
Continuity mistake: When the hobbits first arrive at the "Prancing Pony" the camera pans the top of the bar showing the guest ledger, an ink well off to the right along with a bar towel. When the camera angle changes to show the hobbits, a feather pen magically appears on top of the book, along with the ink well having been placed alongside the book and the bar towel folded on the opposite side of the book.
Continuity mistake: At the shore, after remembering Gandalf's words, Frodo pushes the boat into the water, then jumps in, and the gear in the boat is seen. In the boat, as Frodo says, "Go back Sam," once more the gear in the boat is seen. When Frodo rescues Sam and he's climbing into the boat, the gear is seen again. In all three shots of the boat, some of that gear is arranged quite differently.
Continuity mistake: In Farmer Maggot's field, when Merry places all the vegetables into Sam's arms one shot shows a cabbage with very loose leaves around it. In the next shot, the cabbage is now whole and firm, with almost no loose leaves around it and there are carrots that Merry placed on top of the cabbage. In the next shot the cabbage's look is different again and there are no carrots on top of the cabbage. When Sam turns to face Farmer Maggot's voice there are carrots on top again. In all of these shots, Sam's left collar is either under or over his jacket.
Continuity mistake: During the prologue, when Sauron steps on Narsil, in the close-up shot of Isildur lifting the broken sword from below Sauron's foot, there are small stones around Narsil. In the shot just before, when Isildur reaches for Narsil, the sword has no small stones around it.
Continuity mistake: Up on Weathertop, Aragorn throws a flaming torch at the Nazgul, and it hits him in the face, and there are flames inside the hood. In the next shot, the flames are on the outside of the hood, shoulder and sleeve, but there are no flames inside the hood, where they were in the previous shot. In this shot too, the stick from the torch shown is shorter than before. In the next shot, the flames are inside the hood again and the stick is much longer.
Continuity mistake: At Amon Hen, when Frodo asks of Aragorn, "Can you protect me from yourself?" there is a close-up of the Ring in the palm of Frodo's hand, which is clearly Elijah Wood's hand - his fingernails are so bitten up that there are barely any left. A moment later, in the two following close-ups, first when Aragorn's hand nearly touches the Ring and then when Aragorn's hand closes Frodo's fingers over the Ring, Frodo's hand is certainly not Elijah Wood's - the fingernails are regular length.
Continuity mistake: The Watcher in the Water holds Frodo upside down, and just as its head comes out of the water, but before its mouth appears, in this shot part of the back of Frodo's cloak is tucked into his belt at the back of his waist. The cloak is not tucked into the belt in the previous or following shots.
Continuity mistake: After Boromir is hit with the second arrow, he falls to his knees. When he shoves his sword into the Uruk in the close-up, the silver clasp on Boromir's red shirt, at the center of his torso, is not clasped to the red loop on the opposite side (but it was in previous shots). However, in his extreme close-up, when he screams out, it is properly clasped like the rest on the red shirt, but in the very next shot it is not clasped yet again, and of course it is in following shots.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf and Saruman fight at Orthanc, Gandalf causes Saruman to slam backwards into the wall and then Saruman makes Gandalf spin horizontally in mid-air. In the next shot, when Gandalf falls, the wrap around his left hand is visible, yet, he does not wear it in the previous and following shots.
Continuity mistake: During the prologue, in the close-up shot of Isildur coming and kneeling at his father's side, we see he removes his own helmet and lays it down above Elendil's head. Elendil's own helmet is lying to the left of his head. In the wide shot from above, there is now a helmet above Elendil's head and a helmet between Elendil and Isildur. There is no helmet to the left of Elendil's head.
Continuity mistake: After spotting the Crebain from Dunland, the Fellowship try to hide. Just after Frodo and Aragorn hide under some boulders, there is an aerial shot of the area. Frodo, holding the green cloak, can be seen ducking behind the tall boulder on the left, even though he's shown already hiding in the previous shot.
Continuity mistake: Near the beginning of the film, when Frodo and Gandalf are riding in his cart together talking, there are some close-up shots of just one character or the other. However, the background in the Frodo shots and the background in the Gandalf shots are moving at noticeably different speeds.
Continuity mistake: At Bag End, Bilbo invites Gandalf in and he hands Bilbo his staff and hat. Before the hand off, the knot of the wrist strap on the staff is seen just as Gandalf says, "Bilbo Baggins." and the rim of his hat is seen throughout. After the hand off, as Bilbo carries the large staff in front of him, the strap hangs down and it's a different knot than seen before. The rim of the huge prop hat is seen when Bilbo puts it down and there is a slice on the rim that was not there before.
Continuity mistake: On their way to the Falls of Rauros, the Fellowship rest at night on the shore. The three boats are side by side at the shoreline, in the first shot. Then we see the boats near the rockface beside the sleeping Hobbits, and next to Frodo and Sam when they're speaking.
Continuity mistake: In the opening shot of Bag End, as Bilbo says, "The Third Age of this world," we see the halls outside of Bilbo's study as Bilbo writes. There is a dresser with books on it, books lying near the coat tree, stacks of books and papers all over the floor and against the walls. Later, just before Bilbo says, "Frodo, someone at the door," and then when Bilbo searches for the Ring in the hall, in all three of these shots, the arrangement or even existence of quite a few of those books and papers is different. This has nothing to do with his search of the Ring.
00:08:00 - 00:12:50Super Grover
Continuity mistake: While Bilbo stretches at his desk and calls out "Frodo, someone at the door" the words on the page in his book can be seen. The last line written is these four words "among the very wise." Yet in the next close-up shot of Bilbo writing again, the last line on the page is these five words: "counted among the very wise." They are different variations of the same page in Bilbo's book used in these two shots.
Continuity mistake: Gandalf stands at the door of Bag End waiting for Bilbo. Slung over his shoulder is his large pouch that rests at his thigh, and attached to the large pouch is a small pouch, near the flap. When Gandalf enters Bag End the small pouch is gone, not hidden, just gone.
Continuity mistake: At Dwarrowdelf, as Gimli runs towards the Chamber of Mazarbul with Balin's Tomb, we see outside the doorway an assortment of body remains, armor and other objects. Then after hearing the approaching Orcs, Boromir looks out of the doorway, and we see to his left that the various body remains and armor are different. When Aragorn and Boromir close the doors to the room, outside we see the position and/or variety of body remains, armor and objects change again.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf gets the doors open to the mines, the doors open and you can see Gimli's axe on the right. The camera angle changes to a close-up of Gimli and he is seen in a sitting position smoking his pipe turning his head to the doors. The camera angle changes to a wide shot and he is seen standing with his axe in his hand.
Continuity mistake: When Arwen is being chased on horseback through the woods by the Ringwraiths, at one point her face gets grazed by a tree branch, which leaves a long red scratch on her right cheek. In the following shot from up behind the horse she's riding, when she turns around one more time to see where the Wraiths are, her face is conspicuously unblemished, only to have the scratch re"surfaced" on subsequent close-ups. Also, during this long flight to the Ford sequence it is quite discernible in many cuts by cueing on her face (esp'ly in slo-mo) that the rider is a stunt double.
Continuity mistake: At Bag End, Gandalf tosses the envelope with the Ring into the fire. He grips tongs tightly between his thumb and other fingers and reaches into the fire with his thumb facing his left side. In the close-up, the Ring is grasped on the same side as his thumb, with the excess Ring on the other side with his other fingers. Yet in the next shot, Gandalf lifts the Ring out of the fire and the Ring is grasped on the same side as his other fingers, with the excess Ring at the same side as his thumb. This has nothing to do with camera angles.
Continuity mistake: While Gandalf is nervously waiting, Frodo is looking for the envelope with the Ring in the wood chest. In the first shot looking up from the POV of the chest, Frodo holds the envelope with the flap up near his fingers and the seal below it. However in the next shot the envelope is reversed, with the flap opposite his fingers.
Continuity mistake: During the prologue, after Sauron strikes Elendil, we see Narsil falling right at the corner of a dirtless, sandless smooth rockface and the sword has only some blood stains on it. When Isildur grabs Narsil, it is now in the middle of dirty, sandy rock, and the sword has dirt all over it now.
Continuity mistake: After hearing noises out the window, Gandalf tells Frodo to, "Get down," and reaches for his staff leaning on the mantle. In the close-up when he grabs the staff, on the mantle there are books on the left end with a box near it, and a piece of paper leaning up against the wall between the two. In the wide shot just before this shot, there is no paper between the books and box. Also, the paper lying between the books changes from previous shots and when he starts heading for the window, behind him on the mantle the paper to the right of the candlestick changes position in the following shots.
Continuity mistake: As Gimli weeps at Balin's Tomb, he says "Oh no. No." There is a wide shot, and this is the first shot of the skeleton and pail resting on the stone well. In this shot, the skeleton's feet and head, which are leaning to its left, are in different positions than in the second shot of it. In the second shot, Pippin backs up towards the well, and the skeleton, with its head leaning to its right is shown. Then in the third shot Pippin turns toward the well as Gandalf reads, "A shadow moves in the dark," the skeleton's head now leans to its left. In the fourth shot, as Pippin starts to touch the arrow, the skeleton's head is now leaning forward to its right.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf and Bilbo are outside Bag End we see the cloth topped table against the wall that has papers, packages and a candelabra on it. In the shots from outside, the table end closest to the front door is located right under the second decorative beam of wood on the wall, away from the inside archway. In the indoor shot when Gandalf and Bilbo come in, the table end is located right at the archway.
Continuity mistake: After leaving the Mines of Moria, the Fellowship flee toward Lothlorien. Aragorn runs through a rocky bed of water, stops and smiles looking ahead. In the shot from the front, the top of his bow is hardly seen at his shoulder, but in the shot from behind the top of the bow is way up higher than his shoulder.
Continuity mistake: At Bag End, when invisible Bilbo reappears in the hallway, we see books on the shelf of the coat tree. As Bilbo leaves Bag End, he opens the front door, again we see books on the shelf of the coat tree. In both of these shots, the amount and arrangement of books differ.
00:25:40 - 00:28:30Super Grover
Continuity mistake: Frodo is in the kitchen packing apples and other food for his journey to Bree. Frodo asks Gandalf, "And the Ring will be safe there?" Behind Frodo, to his right, the window and table in the next room are seen. The chair near the table, is not the same chair that is next to that table in all the rest of the shots of the area. The window is shut, but when Gandalf and Frodo are soon in there it is open when Sam isn't "dropping no eaves." It cannot be assumed that Sam would have opened the window. The existence and arrangement of books and papers on the window bench also differs.
00:41:30 - 00:42:15Super Grover
Continuity mistake: In Rivendell, when Bilbo gives Frodo Sting, as he's unwrapping the sword from the cloth, in the close-up he spreads the cloth out flat on the bench in front of the bed. In the next shots, as he shows and then gives Sting, the cloth is wrinkled up on the bench. (Time appropriate for second disc.)
Continuity mistake: Gandalf says, "This is the One Ring, forged by the Dark Lord Sauron," and next is a side shot of Frodo pouring tea as Gandalf sits at the table. The Ring is beside the small light colored creamer at the edge of the table, with the spout's interior perfectly visible. In the next close-up of the Ring from Frodo's POV, as Gandalf says, "For 60 years..." the very dark colored glaze on the rim and spout of the creamer are visible. Obviously not the same creamer in the shots from this POV. Then in the close-ups of the Ring from Gandalf's POV, like when he says, "...and the Ring survived," not only do the crumbs differ, the actual table differs - the wood's grain is completely different.
Continuity mistake: In Bag End, as Gandalf goes towards the table with the map, the window bench to the left can be seen. On it lies a red blanket folded up up nicely. Later, when Bilbo is at the window looking out at the Sackville-Bagginses, the blanket isn't folded as it was before, and the book near the blanket has the papers on/near it arranged differently as well.
Continuity mistake: The Troll hasn't even entered the doorway yet, and both Sam and Aragorn look way up, as if the Troll were standing right in front of them already, but the Troll is only visible more in the distance, through the door. Since the Troll is still only in the doorway for them to see, the eye angle should still be towards the doorway, not up over them. Then when the Troll smashes through the doorway, and walks towards Sam, in the same shot as earlier, Sam looks way up at the Troll, but this time the eye angle is correct.
Continuity mistake: There's a shot of the back of Gandalf's wagon as he rides into the Shire. A scarf is on a lantern at the right side of the wagon. Gandalf sings the lines "The Road goes ever on and on, down from the door..." The next shot, a view of the wagon from the front, and the scarf is on the lantern at the left side of the wagon. The scarf switched sides because the first shot is flipped.
Continuity mistake: When the Balrog's whip wraps around Gandalf's ankle and pulls him off the bridge in Moria, you can see that the surface of the bridge where he was standing is perfectly flat and smooth. We cut to Frodo screaming, then back to Gandalf, who is now hanging onto an easy-to-grip groove in the rock.
Continuity mistake: As Gimli runs into the room of Balin's Tomb, he stops and says, "No!" and in this wide shot, the huge stone with skeletal remains on and around it is lying away from the wall, just behind Gimli, to his left. He kneels, and after he cries, "Oh no! No!" there is a wide overhead shot of the room. In this shot, that particular stone with the skeletal remains is right next to the corner of the wall now. This doesn't have anything to do with camera angle.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf is facing off with the Balrog on the bridge, he is seen from a wide camera angle as having his illuminated staff directly in front of him. When the camera angle switches to a close up, the staff is no longer in front of him. The camera angle changes to a wide view and the staff is seen in front of him again.
Continuity mistake: During the Prologue, after Sauron has swept some of the men away with his mace, Elendil (Isildur's father), brings up his courage and charges towards Sauron. Sauron quickly hits him with the mace and sends him flying towards the wall. His helmet is still on his head, although one side of it is drastically bent from the impact. Then, with a horrified look on his face, Isildur rushes up to his crushed father. When Isildur holds his father's head in his hands, Elendil's helmet is on his left. Isildur wouldn't have had time to take it off himself as the camera follows his moves and shows him falling to his knees before his father's still form.
Continuity mistake: As Sam is getting into the boat, in Lorien, you see Boromir's body (not head) on the right of the screen and Aragorn's body (not head) to the left. All three including Sam, are wearing the cloaks they received in the scene before. While Sam gets into the boat, the voice-over you hear in these few shots is Celeborn, who is actually talking to Aragorn on shore. Then in the next shot of Aragorn talking to Celeborn, Aragorn isn't wearing his cloak, as he's receiving the knife gift from Celeborn. The next problem is, while Merry and Pippin talk about Lembas, Boromir is in the background without his cloak. In the next shot when Sam gets into the boat, in the background we see Boromir's body with the cloak on again. Next we see Aragorn still talking to Celeborn on shore, in the background we see Boromir and he's not wearing the cloak yet again. The shots were obviously put together out of sequence, and none are flashback.
01:02:15 - 01:03:00Super Grover
Continuity mistake: During the end fight scene with the Uruk-hai, the fight scene takes place on the side of a hill for the most part, but you can see that sometimes the sunlight shines down the hill and sometimes it shines across the hill, meaning it was filmed at different times of the day.
Continuity mistake: The Fellowship hide when they spot Crebain from Dunland. In the wide shot when Aragorn picks up his stuff, Frodo runs and lying on the ground under the rocks in front of him are blankets, coats, etc. Then in the next close-up under the rock, the position of those things lying on the ground is different just before Frodo dives onto them to hide.
Continuity mistake: Extended Version only: When the Sackville-Bagginses are knocking on the door, Bilbo walks to a beam to look at them through the window. In the shot from behind we see that he walks to it and leans his right arm on it, peeking round. From the front he's leaning his whole shoulder on it, looking more relaxed.
Continuity mistake: When the hobbits first start to run away from Farmer Maggot, they are running through the corn, which is much taller than them. Two seconds later, when the camera angle changes to the wide view (you can see all four hobbits running through the corn), their heads are even with, if not slightly above the corn. After it shows that the corn is about their height, there is the last shot of them coming out of the corn field and the stalks are again much taller than them.
Continuity mistake: There's a close-up of Frodo's face after the camera shows the stone Trolls, and Frodo's face is shining with sweat. Then Sam says, "Look Frodo, it's Mr. Bilbo's Trolls," and there's a shot farther away from Frodo's face. In this shot, Frodo's face has no signs of sweat on it. Extended DvD.
Continuity mistake: When Lurtz was about to kill Boromir, Aragorn knocked the Uruk-hai down. He falls, drops his bow and arrow, then he picks up a sword and shield off a dead Uruk. Once Aragorn and Lurtz start fighting, the dead bodies disappear. When the fight is over and Lurtz is dead, all the dead reappear.
Continuity mistake: At the beginning, when Gandalf first knocks on the door at Bag End, Bilbo runs out and hugs Gandalf, with both arms around Gandalf's neck. In the shots behind Gandalf, both of Bilbo's arms are around Gandalf. In the shot behind Bilbo, only his left arm is around Gandalf.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf knocks on the door at Bag End, there is a small uneven path of stones mingled with grass in front of the door, where Gandalf stands. Once Gandalf and Bilbo enter Bag End, in the interior shot that area is visible past the front door, and now it is an even stone path with no grass whatsoever between the stones.
Continuity mistake: In the scene at the Council of Elrond, in Rivendell, after Frodo has placed the Ring on the stone table, the council argues about who will take the Ring. Just a moment before Gandalf does that touching look towards Frodo, he starts yelling at Boromir. His posture and action in the wider angle shot do not match that close-up moment. Extended edition.
Continuity mistake: There is a scene where Merry is throwing rocks into the water in front of the Walls of Moria. The camera shows him starting to throw a second rock into the water, and then the shot cuts faraway to show the rock landing in the water. In this brief faraway shot, Pippin is sitting. In the very next shot, however, Pippin is standing, poised and ready with a rock in his hand.
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf arrives at the Shire, some children start chasing the wagon yelling for fireworks. At this point we can see a Hobbit couple watching the children run past. The female Hobbit places her hand on her hip, and then in a close-up, she puts her hand on her hip again.
Continuity mistake: Near the end when Frodo has tears running down his face. In the first shot the tear on his right side is short and the left side tear is down to his chin. in the next shot they are reversed. Some people have said it's just that one tear lengthened and a new one started, but look at the right-hand one (the longer one in the first shot). If there was a new tear, we'd still see the damp path of the first one, but it's rolling down a dry cheek.
Continuity mistake: In the Chamber of Mazarbul, with Balin's Tomb, Pippin backs up towards the well, we see the pail and there is a thick bunch of chain hanging out of it. In the next shot of Pippin as he backs up and turns, the pail now has one line of chain hanging out of it. Then Pippin touches the quiver of the arrow, and in the first shot of the head falling back into the well the pail yet again has a thick bunch of chain hanging out of it. Then in the next shot of Pippin turning around towards Gandalf the pail once again has the one line of chain hanging out of it.
Continuity mistake: At the very start of the film when Gandalf is in his wagon, Frodo stops him with: "You're late." Gandalf stops his wagon quite a way from the bank that Frodo appears on. Gandalf sternly delivers his line and moments later they both burst out laughing. Then Frodo almost steps onto the wagon which was much further from the bank during the first part of the exchange.
Continuity mistake: After Sam dives between the Troll's legs and tries to crawl away, in the first shot the Troll lifts his leg and in the second shot he's about to step on Sam, who is in the middle of the floor. Yet in the very next shot Sam is already at the wall raising his left arm and wincing at the giant foot coming down on him.
Continuity mistake: When Aragorn tries to save Frodo from the Troll, the Troll throws Aragorn against a wall, and when the camera angle changes to a close-up of Aragorn he is seen lying flat on his back up against a different wall. When he crawls over to Frodo later, the background is the original wall.
Continuity mistake: As Gandalf and Saruman battle each other at Orthanc, both Saruman's and Gandalf's staffs either change position drastically or actually change hands, in consecutive shots. For example after Gandalf 'strikes' Saruman the first time, Saruman slams Gandalf to the floor, Gandalf's staff is in his right hand, yet, in the next overhead shot it's beside him, under his left hand.
Continuity mistake: In Bag End when Bilbo is about to leave, Gandalf leans forwards with his hand on the ceiling or doorway of the circular corridor and says, "Bilbo, the Ring is still in your pocket," then we see Bilbo for ten seconds or so and as he holds the Ring in his hand, Gandalf repeats the motion, in close up.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Saruman is using his magical powers to bring an avalanche down on Cahadras the group is seen in a close-up to bend over and move against the wall to protect themselves from the falling snow. The camera angle changes to a wide view and the group is seen as just standing there.
Continuity mistake: After Arwen has crossed the Ford of Bruinen and is challenged by the Ringwraith Witch-King, she draws her sword and holds it high and ready to strike. Arwen then calls upon the waters of the river for assistance. When the rush of water with horses' heads comes around the bend and into view there is a clear shot of Arwen's back as she is watching the water come down on the Ringwraiths and she is not holding her sword up. Shortly after all the Ringwraith's are swept away, there is a scene of Arwen's face and upper body and she is still holding the sword high and ready to strike.
Continuity mistake: When the members of the Fellowship are running away from the Balrog, they get caught on the steep narrow stairs and have to jump across the gap. When only Frodo and Aragorn are left on the upper side, there is a long shot from the top, showing large rocks crashing down in the foreground and the two of them further away. Both of them jolt forward, as if with the impact, before the rock has hit the top of the staircase.
Continuity mistake: Boromir approaches the statue that holds the shards of Narsil. First we see the shards laid out on the crinkled grey cloth, with two short ends draped over the edge. Then as he takes the hilt the cloth bunches up (seen on fullscreen), and he cuts his finger on the 'still sharp' blade. In the close-up when he carelessly places the hilt back onto the cloth - as it starts to fall, the cloth (which is now darker) is spread out much straighter, more cloth drapes over the left edge, and the shards are spaced somewhat differently than the previous shot. When Boromir walks away, there is a very short amount of cloth that is draped over the right edge, near the statue's fingers. Then, when Aragorn lifts the hilt off the floor, as he rises, both ends of the cloth that are draped over the edge are now much, much, longer, and the top of the cloth is crinkled, with the shards spaced similarly to the first shot.
Continuity mistake: When Frodo and Gandalf are in the kitchen, and Gandalf is revealing the truth about the One Ring, there's a shot where Frodo is standing, pouring some tea. It then cuts to Gandalf for literally two seconds, and when it cuts back to Frodo, not only has he finished pouring, but he's settled in his chair with his hands wrapped around his teacup. Pretty fast moving there.
Continuity mistake: When the Lady of The Woods meets privately with Frodo, she grabs a pitcher and fills it with water. She is seen holding the handle with her hand about half way down the middle. The camera angle changes and she is now holding the handle at the top of it. The camera angle changes again and she is seen with her hand back in the middle of the handle.
Continuity mistake: When Legolas identifies the moving cloud as Crebain from Dunland, everybody hides and when they pass Gandalf is seen standing back up from behind a large rock. The camera angle changes and he is seen again standing up but this time it's from behind a different rock.
Continuity mistake: When Pippin says "What about second breakfast?" he's crouched over by the pony, a bit away from Merry. Aragorn says a line and the camera goes back to the Hobbits. Now Pippin is further from the pony standing right by Merry, not crouched at all. He couldn't have moved that far during Aragorn's line and be standing so naturally.
Continuity mistake: After the hobbits take the tumble from farmer Maggot's field, they land in a heap with twigs in their hair. Frodo stands on the road and looks down it. He says, "I think we should get off the road" and the twigs are there. He looks back down the road and the smoke and leaves come swirling at him, he yells, "Get off the road" - no twigs. They hide from the wraith, then make their escape. Merry says, "What was that?" - and they have the twigs in their hair again.
Continuity mistake: When Frodo is pulling Sam out of the water at the very end of the movie, the underwater shots show Sam's hand grasping Frodo's wrist (Frodo's palm is against the inside of Sam's wrist), but as soon as he gets him above water, Frodo has a grip on Sam that forces Sam to keep his palm facing away from Frodo's arm (Frodo's palm is against the back of Sam's arm). Short of releasing Sam completely, there is no way to change grip like that in between the two shots.
Continuity mistake: As Gimli bows before Balin's tomb in Moria, the camera circles around the tomb and the body which Pippin later disturbs is visible in the background. It appears fairly substantial, is wearing a breastplate and has its head on its chest. However when Pippin touches it the body looks different; more skeletal and covered in cobwebs, with the head in a different position.

Continuity mistake: During the fight between Gandalf and Saruman at Orthanc, after Saruman slams backwards into the wall Saruman causes Gandalf to spin horizontally in mid-air. As Gandalf spins he loses grip of his staff, yet, in the next close-up as he hits the ground the staff is still in his hand.
Continuity mistake: Upon the Fellowship entering the Chamber of Mazarbul and discovering the tomb of Gimli's cousin Balin, a ray of light is shown shining into the room from the side opposite to the entrance: the side with the long drop later featured prominently by Pippin. After exiting the chamber, another ray of light is shown shining into the tomb from the opposite side it was earlier depicted, appearing to enter the chamber from the entrance side through a small hole above and slightly to the right of the door. No such ray of light, or hole, is seen prior to the Fellowship entering the chamber: the direction of the light just completely flips upon them exiting the room.

Continuity mistake: When Legolas jumps up on a rock to look at the approaching flock of birds, you can distinctively see his breath showing. But at no other time do you see his, or anyone else's breath showing in the scene. (It occured to me that this might be smoke, but he doesn't have a pipe.)
Continuity mistake: When Gandalf sits near Frodo in Rivendell, he explains, "I was delayed." As he thinks back, in the first wide shot as Gandalf lies on the floor at the top of Orthanc, the bowl sits at the left side of the spire wall. Saruman forces Gandalf over the opposite edge and then onto his stomach towards the center of the floor. As Gandalf lies on his stomach and says, "And he does not share power!" in the next shot however, Gandalf is actually sitting up against the spire wall and the bowl is to his right.
Continuity mistake: During the prologue when Isildur and his men are riding through the woods, you see Isildur ride alone in front. Then the orcs attack, and when you see the orc jump at Isildur you can see a flag beside Isildur, meaning he is carrying it or someone beside him does. We previously saw him riding alone in front and when it cuts from the shot beneath Isildur we see the flag is gone and that there is no one beside him that is carrying the flag.
Continuity mistake: Not only do the arms on the two large statutes at Amon Hen change, the statutes themselves switch places. When we first see them, the statute of the younger man has a winged helmet and is on the left and the older with the smooth helmet is on the right. In the shot once the boats have gone past, the winged helmet statute is on the right and the smooth helmet statute is on the left.
Continuity mistake: When the Cave Troll stabs Frodo, and then you see Sam close up and yelling "Frodo" He has 2 bloody cuts on his left cheek, and near his lip. But when the Troll is killed, and he slowly approaches Frodo, the cuts are moved further back, so they aren't as noticeable. But when Gandalf 'dies', and you can see Sam close up again, crying, the cuts have vanished all together. (The second timecode is when the cut vanishes all together).
