Continuity mistake: Major Smith forces Carnaby to reveal his true identity by firing a single bullet which fragments the upper section of his chair. Soon after when Smith stands behind Carnaby (revealed as Cartwright Jones) the chair is undamaged.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When the team are about to jump from the cable car into the river, the view from ground level shows a bare road with no snow on it on the right and a line of trees on the left with German trucks parked next to them, but the view from the cable car shows a snow-covered road and no trucks beside the trees.

Factual error: The Germans in the castle are using Bell 47 helicopters which, apart from being manufactured by the enemy, did not even appear until after the war.

Add time

Factual error: The aircraft at the Oberhausen airfield at the end of the field are T-6 texan trainers of the Austrian air-force painted with Luftwaffe markings.

Add time

Revealing mistake: After the accident with the German car crashing into the pile of snow in which the Germans were killed, Schaffer first hangs an MP40 on his shoulder and then somehow pulls up a body with only one hand. And with the changing of the grip, (from chest to legs) the 'body' stands on his own feet to give Schaffer the time and opportunity to do it properly.

Character mistake: In the courtyard of the castle there is an anti-aircraft gun. You could probably not find a worse place for a gun like that even if you tried (except maybe if you put it inside, in a windowless room). In the position it is placed it can only fire at targets directly ABOVE the castle. What you want to do is fire at targets BEFORE they reach the castle. It would be better if they placed it on the roof, or even near the village below.

Continuity mistake: When Mary and Schaffer are firing the MP-40s from the back of the bus, a shot from outside of the bus shows the rear windshield broken/cracked one way but in the next shot from inside the bus looking out the rear windshield is broken/cracked differently.

Continuity mistake: When Smith is driving the bus, there are at one point several bullet holes in the bus' windscreen and in the next shot they have vanished.

Continuity mistake: When Schaffer and Smith commandeer a motorcycle and sidecar, one shot shows the MP-40 slung over Schaffer's neck and laying across his lap, while in the next shot it is slung over left shoulder and hanging down his side.

Revealing mistake: When the bus is being pursued, Smith steers it to trip several prepositioned explosives that blow up trees to block the road. In order to by pass a downed tree the Germans push a motorcycle around it, and you can plainly see that the tree was cut by a chainsaw.

Other mistake: In the scene where Burton and Eastwood are in the radio room, two grenades are thrown, which blow the main radio room door off the hinges and Burton and Eastwood run behind the small door and hide in that room. The German soldiers then run up and one of them throws another grenade supposedly into the radio room. However, the actor in his attempt to throw the grenade into the room instead throws the grenade into the door and it bounces back into the hallway in which he is standing and lands in front of him, yet no one reacts to this and seconds later we see an explosion as if the grenade had actually gone into the room, but it is really on the floor in front of the door and would have certainly blown the German soldiers to bits.

Add time

Continuity mistake: Smith puts on one glove just before he hops onto the cable car with the two German spies. The next shot shows him with two gloves on.

Add time

Revealing mistake: As the spy troupe prepares to leave by airplane, a Kübelwagen with soldiers comes up, which Burton shoots with his MP40. As the car bursts into flames, the driver and passengers are revealed as dummies, since no one could or would sit around quietly while they were on fire.

Add time

Factual error: In the flashback scene where the commandos are being briefed on their mission, they are told that General Carmody was on his way to a meeting with Russian officers on Crete. Hardly the best place for a meeting between the Allies since Crete was then under German occupation.

Add time

Revealing mistake: After Smith and Schaffer are captured and while they are being transported by car, Schaffer pushes one of the guards out of the car and a struggle begins which causes the car to crash. After the crash, the body of the guard that was pushed out of the car magically appears about 50 feet behind the accident (just before the crash there was no body).

Revealing mistake: When the Allies are dropped from the plane into the snow and they find the dead soldier. Watch close, because the dead soldier blinks his eyes...

Add time

Continuity mistake: When the team is about to jump from the cable car into the river, seen from the cable car, they wait until they get close to the shore. But when they jump, seen from below, the cable car is moving across the river from the far side, and they land in the middle.

Add time

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: The car that Schaffer and Smith are riding in with the Germans is launched in the air by hitting a pile of snow and then comes to a sudden stop by hitting a pile of gravel where the Germans are killed. What happened to the pile of snow when Schaffer and Smith push the car backwards?

Add time

Continuity mistake: After Smith and Schaeffer are done rigging the trees and poles with explosives, Schaeffer gets off the motorcycle and you can see the seat of his pants is wet. As they are entering the shed, the seat of his pants is now dry.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Smith and Schaffer intrude on Carnaby's interrogation, the Gestapo officer and Mary are having drinks in the café, where he makes a statement that might reveal a fault in her identity (a location in Dusseldorf). Her hand is fixed on her chin, but the next cut shows her hand fully on her cheek.

Add time

Continuity mistake: In the scene where the Germans are beating down the door to the hallway leading to the cable car, when the door is about to give way, in the clip from inside the door, it is moving a lot under each blow, but when seen from the outside it doesn't move at all.

Continuity mistake: As Mary is starting the rappel down the rope out of the castle, her MP-40 is slung on her right side with the muzzle pointing forward, but in the next shot it is slung across her back with the muzzle pointing to her left.

Factual error: As the coach moves through the village near the end of the film, it drives past a tracked vehicle. The vehicle is a Hotchkiss LPz, a type of armoured personnel carrier not produced until the 1960s.

Add time

Continuity mistake: Major Smith (Richard Burton) forces one of the traitors out of the castle window on a rope. He is wearing standard battle dress. When the traitor is shot by one of the Germans, he falls wearing a camouflage smock.

Add time

Continuity mistake: In the scene where the group parachutes in, the sky is cloudy and we can see snowfall, but watch carefully, as the men make their way to the equipment containers and then to find Sgt Harod we constantly see shots switching between cloudy and snowfall, then to no snowfall and sometimes sunlight, then back to cloudy and snowfall again. This switch back and forth is even more evident on the closeups of Richard Burton.

Add time

Visible crew/equipment: In the scene where the Germans are pursuing Richard Burton's escaping party as they make their way towards the aircraft waiting for them, you will see the first of two pursuing German Kubelwagons being hit with machine gun fire and flipping. When this happens, you will see a cable used to flip the vehicle on the bottom left side of the screen being quickly retracted as it becomes detached from the Kubelwagon's axle.

Add time

Factual error: When Richard Burton walks over the square where the helicopter is, he salutes a soldier. An officer NEVER salutes first one with a lower rank. And surely not in Germany.

Add time

Paul Moortgat

Factual error: When Lt. Schaffer is sneaking up on the German soldier, in the radio room in the castle, you see and hear the soldier changing radio station channels. Most of the music you hear playing on the radio is distinctly a 1960s style easy listening music and not 1940s music.

Add time

Plot hole: The radio set used to communicate with headquarters in England was in fact a British low power VHF transceiver with a range of a couple of miles at best. It simply didn't have the capability to reach England.

Add time

Continuity mistake: After looking at the Castle, Smith sends Shaffer back to the others to tell them to stay behind the tree line and he goes to the radio to contact London. When he turns to go to the radio his MP40 has the butt extended, but when he gets to the radio it's folded back again.

Add time

Plot hole: When Smith and Shaffer take the gondola up to the castle, they step down on the roof of the car with heavy steps. It is completely unrealistic that the Germans inside did not hear them.

Add time

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: When Eastwood is looking through binoculars at the cable car going up to the castle (the studio model), Burton arrives down the hill and lies beside him and there is no cable car to be seen at the actual castle in the background.

Add time

Greg McCreanor

Continuity mistake: When Burton and the others go up the wooden staircase to approach the radio room, an upright beam is already charred by fire, but this wood only catches fire later when Eastwood throws the first grenade back at the Germans.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Burton kicks Donald Houston off the cable car, they have been fighting on the side of the cable car. However, the next shot of Houston falling shows him falling from the front of it.

Continuity mistake: When Smith is rapelling out of the castle and nearing the bottom, Jones/Carnaby is to the left of Smith but in the next shot he is to the right of Smith.

apcall

Factual error: Smith has the books with names in his pocket when he goes into the water, jumping from the cable car. When he shows the books to Turner, they are in perfect shape. They should have been waterlogged or at least showed some sign of water damage.

Add time

Other mistake: In the scene where Smith and Schaffer are riding with the SS in the staff car, after the car hits the snow bank, Smith picks up the SS Colonel and puts him back in the car. The Colonel is wearing a Major's collar tabs.

Add time

Plot hole: In one scene, the heroes of the film (i.e. Burton, Eastwood and others) locked themselves up in the cable car control room within the castle. The pursuing Germans wasted valuable time trying to break down the heavy wooden door of the control room with axes. Why didn't the Germans use grenades or other explosives? They could have instantly blown open even the sturdiest wooden door.

Add time

Continuity mistake: During this sequence at the radio transmitter in Admiral Rolland's headquarters, whilst the Admiral is attempting to regain contact with Smith, Colonel Turner is seen in the background, smoking. At the beginning of the sequence, one shot shows him holding a cigarette between the fingers of his right hand. After a cut back to the Admiral, the next shot shows Turner holding the cigarette in the fingers of his left hand.

xx:xx:xx

Plot hole: When Smith and Schaffer are entering the castle via a rope Mary has lowered for them, Smith stops halfway up to look through a large window. Clearly visible through this window are the faces of at least two soldiers with others in the background. It is inconceivable that not one of them would notice: A) the rope suddenly dangling outside; B) Smith's solid frame as he stares in at them; C) Schaffer scrambling up the rope after Smith; or D) the rope bouncing around while Schaffer drags it in along with the attached backpack.

xx:xx:xx

Continuity mistake: At Oberhausen Airfield we see the plane land in clear skies. But when the bus seconds later drives through the fence, it is cloudy and foggy.

xx:xx:xx

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: As the stolen bus ploughs through the German airfield Smith yells to Schaffer, "Take out the control tower," so Schaffer and Mary point their guns high and start firing. There is a long shot of bullets strafing the control tower, glass shattering and the traffic controller falling backwards as he is hit. It is followed by a quick close-up of him in perfect health, shouting into his radio, then being mowed down by the stream of bullets.

xx:xx:xx

Other mistake: When Richard Burton is removing the light bulbs to darken the cable car as it approaches the German gunnery team, he screws them clockwise instead of counterclockwise. He is never shown actually removing the bulbs nor do they darken as he is "loosening" them.

Add time

srbeckle

Continuity mistake: When Schaffer climbs the rope into the castle, he reaches the top of the rope, grabs the window sill and starts to pull himself in. It then cuts to inside the room where Schaffer can be seen outside holding on to the top of the rope and then grabs the window sill to pull himself in, again.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Major Smith and the others have completed their parachute jump, they find Sgt. Harod dead in the snow. Major Smith says at first Harod broke his neck on landing, but later said to his trusted comrades Harod was murdered after landing. Since he was murdered by a member of the landing party there would be tell-tale footprints of the murderer in the virgin snow around Harod's body, but there are no footprints around him at all.

Add time

Continuity mistake: In her castle room, Mary lays all the sticks of dynamite on their sides in the suitcase. When Smith opens the suitcase in the meeting room after they got the names of the spies, the dynamite is now standing on end.

Add time

Continuity mistake: The stub of the tree which is cut down by an explosion during the bus escape is very even and clearly cut with a saw.

Add time

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: In the scene where they all jump from the sky tram into the water after escaping from the castle, we see the blonde woman (Mary) swim to shore. As she gets out, her hair is absolutely soaked and matted to her head. When the angle of the camera changes, we see her only this time, he hair is almost perfect and only slightly damp and is actually blowing in the soft breeze.

Add time

Continuity mistake: When Burton and Eastwood jump from the cable car into the river, Burton jumps before Eastwood. However, the next shot downward has the Eastwood stuntman landing in the river first with the Burton stuntman still above him. We know it's Burton because of the bandaged hand.

xx:xx:xx

Greg McCreanor

Continuity mistake: When Smith fires at the last German Kübelwagen chasing his team on the Oberhausen airfield runway, the scene alternates between two perspectives of Smith firing from the bus's engine cover: One from the front, the other from his backside. In each of these alternating shots, Smith holds the front part of his MP40 in a different grip.

Daniel4646

Factual error: Schaffer and Smith are captured and the Nazis are taking them away in a car. After some fighting, the car crashes. While the Nazis fly through the vehicle's windshield, our heroes sit like they had seatbelts, which they didn't.

Add time

Plot hole: We never get an explanation why the three German spies in the British team are killing their team mates - and it doesn't really make any sense. They could just wait until they entered the Castle - and then ensure that they all got caught.

Add time

Jacob La Cour

Character mistake: Before entering the tavern,Smith tells the team to meet outside in a 1/2 hour. When they are sitting at the table just before capture, he says he gave orders for nobody to leave.

Add time

Deliberate mistake: Smith and the team come down the mountain and into the village at dusk, yet it is light out during the entire movie.

Add time

Continuity mistake: At the parachute drop the close-ups of Smith shows his face in sunlight, but the wider shots are grey and foggy.

Add time

Jacob La Cour

Revealing mistake: When the cable car is seen in long shot coming down from the hill (carrying the film's heroes) it is painfully obvious that while the cable car is real enough, the mountain behind it is fake.

Add time

Plot hole: How could Colonel Turner both be in London during the mission and in the pick-up plane? A Juncker can fly approx 220 km/h. It is approx. 1200 km from London to Southern Bavaria. That means that Colonel Turner would have had to leave London 5½ hours before the pick-up. The team does definitely not spend 5½ hours from the last time we see Colonel Turner in London until the pick-up.

Add time

Jacob La Cour

Factual error: Near the end the Germans have to blow a tree in two pieces but the snow on the road is still there, not affected by the blast. And later when the first Kübelwagen is passing the gap for the chase there are already tracks from other takes.

Add time

Paul Moortgat

Continuity mistake: When the Germans set up the machine gun in the corridor and are shot by Eastwood, they collapse next to and over the machine gun in the middle of the corridor. When the team escapes down the corridor later the gun and the bodies have disappeared.
