Visible crew/equipment: During the Quidditch match Harry's broomstick tries to shake him off, due to the spell. After Hermione tells Ron, "Leave it to me," in Harry's last close-up before he flips over, the seat that is attached to the broomstick, to make it more comfortable for Dan Radcliffe to sit on, is entirely visible. Glimpses of other seats can be had during the match as well.
Continuity mistake: When the troll enters the girls' lavatory, in the wide shot as Hermione walks backwards towards the cubicles, the room becomes brighter from the storm. With this extra bright light it is simple to see that the wall between the 2nd & 3rd cubicles actually touches the floor, unlike the other cubicle walls. Yet, in the overhead shot as the troll's club slams into the cubicles, Hermione is lying under that very wall crawling away. Impossible!
Other mistake: When Harry, Ron and Hermione rush to Hagrid after the end of the year exams, and Harry is saying something that ends with, "Why didn't I see it before?", Hermione is mouthing part of that line. [Emma Watson did admit she learned Dan and Rupert's lines as well as her own and found herself accidentally mouthing them.]
Visible crew/equipment: At the Quidditch match, after Hermione sets Snape's cloak on fire and someone shouts, "Fire! You're on fire!" there is a close-up of Harry with his hands gripping the Nimbus 2000. In this shot, the wire rods which are attached/taped to the broomstick, near Harry's fingers, that lead under both of his red sleeves, are entirely visible.
Continuity mistake: At the snake exhibit, while Harry speaks with the Python the snake's body lies curled over a long wood log and a large rock. In the shot from outside the Python's exhibit, after the glass pane disappears Dudley falls over the rail and the snake is gone, not positioned differently, but altogether gone! In the next overhead shot inside the Python's exhibit, while Dudley falls the snake is back lying on the log and rock, in the same position as in the previous shots.
Visible crew/equipment: Being chased by the flying keys, as Harry zips by on the broomstick he tosses the key, Hermione catches it and runs to the door. In the next shot, a close-up, as she tries to unlock the door, an electrical cable hangs down beside the column, that was not in the previous shots. There is also an electrical cable coming out from under the back of Hermione's sweater that is blatantly visible as well.
Visible crew/equipment: Petunia has her hands on Dudley's eyes as they walk towards all of his birthday gifts. When she removes her hands from Dudley's eyes, in this shot and in the next, the long black microphone wire as well as its tape, which obviously peeled free, are blatantly visible and are sticking out at the neckline of her v-neck top under the pearl necklace. It's gone in the following shots. (Do not confuse the blue apron strings for the mic wire.)
Visible crew/equipment: After falling from the Devil's Snare, Harry tells Ron, "Lucky Hermione pays attention in Herbology." Then as Ron starts to walk toward Harry, there is a crew member's arm and hand gripping the back of Ron's shirt at the bottom! (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Other mistake: When Harry receives his first letter in the mail, Dudley snatches it from him before he has a chance to open it. Then he gives it to his father (Uncle Vernon), and Uncle Vernon says "Who'd be writing to you?" If you watch Dudley carefully, you can see him mouth what Uncle Vernon is saying.
Visible crew/equipment: While at the zoo, after Dudley falls into the snake exhibit there is a close-up of the Python's head. At the start of this shot, before Dudley pops out of the water, in the upper left corner of the screen a wood stick comes down to actually prod the trained snake and then quickly moves back up out of shot! (DVD fullscreen for best visibility.)
Visible crew/equipment: In the scene where Hermione, Ron and Harry are returning to Gryffindor's tower room after being in the third floor room for the first time, you are able to see the feet of one of the crew. It happens just as they are passing through the picture hole, where Harry turns a couple of times to check that the "door" is closing. And it is in fact, because someone is walking behind it and pushing it shut, since the picture hangs several inches off the floor.
Visible crew/equipment: Hermione opens the door to Fluffy's room when she says, "Alohomora!" so she, Harry and Ron could hide from Filch and Mrs. Norris. As Ron closes the door the top of the third floor corridor set is visible at the top of the screen. As an aside, when Ron repeats, "Alohomora!" look at Hermione's face!
Continuity mistake: As Hermione hides under the sinks the troll smashes the front basin of the second sink on the right, leaving its faucets and surrounding sinks intact. Though in a view of the entire lavatory when the troll holds Harry upside down, from behind Hermione, the entire second sink, its faucets and trim are entirely missing and the entire fourth sink, which was never touched, is as well, both are gone. When the troll is knocked out, as Hermione stands up and moves toward Harry and Ron, though the faucets of the second sink are back, the front basin of the second sink is visibly broken again just as in the original shot, and the entire fourth sink is still inexplicably gone in this shot.

Visible crew/equipment: After the Queen attacks the Knight's horse during the chess game, Ron goes flying back and falls. In the shot as he hits the ground, the black protective gear that he wears is visible when his grey T-shirt rolls up and the button on his left cuff is open, yet closed in the next close-up.
Visible crew/equipment: During the Quidditch match as the players ride their broomsticks, visible in quite a few shots are the two wires that are attached to the broom handle, between their legs, that extend down with a clamped loop that goes around their feet. In some shots the wires between their legs are edited, but the wire loops around their feet are perfectly visible, like in the following example. When the Slytherin score hits 10 onscreen, in the next shot, as Flint shouts, "Take that side," the wire is completely visible at his right foot under his cloak. Two examples where the entire wires are visible are, when Flint grabs the club and says, "Gimme that!" the wires are blatantly visible and he then proceeds to slam the Bludger into Wood, who falls. Next close-up of one of the twins, the wires are visible before Flint starts to leap over him. (Don't confuse the cloak's long front ties for the wire).
Visible crew/equipment: Petunia and Dudley enter the house when they return from the zoo, followed by Vernon and Harry. The crew's equipment is plainly visible on the ground beyond the doorway. Also, the pavement at the threshold extends far beyond the doorway and just before Vernon walks into the house, Vernon is visibly coming from the side of the doorway. In the earlier exterior shot when they stand by the car before they leave, as Vernon says, "I'm warning you now boy...," not only is the ground at the doorway completely different, there is a garden surrounded by white bricks beside the door, making it impossible for Vernon to have been standing there. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)

Visible crew/equipment: Dumbledore tells Harry that he will move the Mirror of Erised and not to go looking for it. In the following shot Harry walks outside in the snow with Hedwig on his arm. In the close-up of Hedwig, the jess (strap) around his left leg is visibly tethered to Harry's sleeve. The inside of Harry's sleeve also has a strap that secures the sleeve around Harry's wrist. Hedwig is obviously not tethered in the next shot.
Visible crew/equipment: Harry, Ron and Hermione, run to Hagrid's hut to tell him that they know about the Stone and they knock on the door. As Hagrid opens the door in the first shot looking out, Harry stands behind his tape mark and Hermione and Ron visibly stand behind their shared black tape MARK on the step.
Continuity mistake: Dumbledore, McGonagall and Hagrid leave baby Harry on the Dursley's doorstep. When the shot opens in the first close-up of the baby, as Dumbledore places the envelope on the blanket, though a good portion of his forehead is visible, the scar is not there. In his next close-up, it is very apparent, due to the position of the scar, that part of it should have been visible on his forehead in the previous close-up.
Continuity mistake: Just after Slytherin scores ten points, Flint and his teammate surround Angelina. When one grabs the quaffle from Angelina, they fly past the second Gryffindor tower we see the first Gryffindor tower, two staff towers (grey/black), Slytherin tower and the second Gryffindor tower behind them - then Angelina covers her head with her arm. However, in the next shot she actually crashes into the tower that she already flew past.

Visible crew/equipment: When Hermione dives under the sink to hide from the troll, in the first shot the area around her is mildly semi-wet and the fresh wet impression of a crew member's shoe/boot tread at the bottom right corner. After a quick shot of the troll, the area immediately surrounding Hermione her hand, cloak and foot are highlighted due to CG editing - all before the troll slams his club into the front basin of the sink. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Deliberate mistake: When Hagrid steps off the motorbike while holding young Harry, the Dursley's house (with a small bush to the right of the front door) is visible directly behind McGonagall. The house is fully attached on both sides to homes with a one car garage. Yet after Vernon asks, "Who'd be writing to you?" in the shot of the owl dropping the letter which flies through the front door mail slot, the house to the left of the Dursleys (when facing the FRONT) has a two car garage, is not attached to the Dursley's house and is quite a bit away from the Dursley's house as well. Then in Chamber of Secrets, the house to the right (when facing the BACK) is attached once again in the same manner as at the start of this film with young Harry. (Visible on DVD widescreen.)
00:02:25 - 00:09:25Super Grover
Visible crew/equipment: In the Key room after Hermione asks, "What's this all about?" Ron takes his wand out and starts for the door. In the wide shot facing the door as he and Hermione pass to Harry's left the BAR attached to the underside of the broomstick bristles is visible. It is not visible in other shots.
Visible crew/equipment: In Hagrid's hut, Harry, Ron and Hermione gather round the table as Hagrid places the dragon egg in the center. As the egg starts to hatch the shell flies everywhere and between Hermione and Hagrid camera equipment is visible at the lower left corner of the screen. This area is clear prior to this one shot obviously.
Revealing mistake: At the zoo, Harry looks to his right, at the 'bred in captivity' sign of the Python. In this close-up, the green plant that is below, to the side of the exhibit sign, is protruding out past where the glass supposedly is, yet this is BEFORE the glass disappears. As a matter of fact, this plant, nearest the exhibit sign, changes its position considerably throughout these shots.
Visible crew/equipment: Harry, Ron and Hermione are in Hagrid's hut and the egg inside the cauldron in the fireplace starts rattling. In the shot looking up at Hagrid from behind the cauldron, at the top left of the screen in front of the fireplace, as Hagrid retrieves the egg a piece of equipment comes down then quickly goes back up and at the top in the center there is a small black film square that is not part of the fireplace.
Visible crew/equipment: As the troll begins to lift Harry with his huge club in the girls' lavatory, in the overhead shot as Harry hangs on to the edge of the 'real' club, at the bottom left of the screen the crew's blue equipment is perfectly visible. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Continuity mistake: When Harry and Hagrid are in Gringotts, Hagrid takes the letter from Professor Dumbleldore out of his pocket to give to the Head Goblin. The string it is tied with has a bow that runs from the top to bottom of the envelope, and the envelope is creased. When the Goblin takes it off Hagrid, it is a different envelope - the bow runs from left to right and the envelope is not creased. When viewed from where Harry and Hagrid are standing, the final shot of the envelope again shows it is creased.
Visible crew/equipment: Harry gives Vernon two letters and he walks to the other end of the table to open the Hogwarts envelope. When Dudley grabs the letter, as he shouts, "Dad look! Harry's got a letter!" under Dudley's chair, to the left, the black tape mark is visible on the carpet covering. The carpet is covered over near Dudley's chair and on the other side of Vernon, near the black mat. In the close-up of the letter as Vernon holds it, the carpet is back to normal near Dudley's chair.
Revealing mistake: In the scene at the beginning of the movie where all of the letters from Hogwarts are coming into the Dursley's house, it causes everything to shake. It is quite obvious, however, that it is just the cameras that are moving as no objects in the room are moving at all (ie. the curtains, or any of the knicknacks).
Continuity mistake: Near the start, Percy says "Boys upstairs and down on your left, girls the same on your right". However, after the three heroes have been to investigate Fluffy and they go back to the dorms, when they reach the top of the stairs Hermione goes to the left and the boys head right.
00:49:30 - 01:03:30
Continuity mistake: In the chess scene, at the end of the (overlong) montage of shots of pieces being smashed, the White Queen turns her attention to a Black Castle. The first stroke of her sword clearly goes through the structure of the castle, which disintegrates. We cut to various different angles and watch pieces of the destroyed castle flying all over the place. Cut back to the original angle, and we see the Queen attacking again, but the Castle is completely intact - only the figure from on top of it is missing. And it can't have been the second castle, since that's Hermione's position.
Continuity mistake: At the hut on the rock, after Harry draws the candles in the dirt, he glances behind him at Dudley's watch. In the next close-up of the watch, as it turns 12:00, the watch is actually on Dudley's wrist (notice his fingers) the opposite way from the previous shot. Note the distinctive design around the watch face.
Continuity mistake: In the Dursley's kitchen, as Harry walks by, on the table is Vernon's cereal bowl between the coffee pot on his right and OJ on his left, plus the tea pot is in the center of the table. In the close-up as Vernon says, "Yours? Who'd be writing to you?" the cereal bowl is missing and the tea pot is near his OJ. In the next close-up of the letter, the cereal bowl is back and the OJ is now on Vernon's right, near the coffee cup.
Visible crew/equipment: When Hagrid enters the hut on the rock, as well as when he leaves, the bare floor near the front door is clearly visible. However, when he says, "It's not everyday your young man turns eleven, now is it?" in the next shot as Hagrid sits down, on the floor to his left is the crew's mat with marks for the Dursleys (Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffiths), who stand near the door.
Factual error: When Wood is telling Harry the rules of Quidditch he says that if you catch the Snitch the game is over, which is true but then he also says that which ever seeker catches the snitch, their team wins, but that isn't true. Granted that the 150 extra points probably would give you the winning lead, but as JKR pointed out in the 4th book at the Quidditch World Cup, you can catch the Snitch but lose the match. And you'd think explaining the rules to a first-timer you would want to get it right.
Continuity mistake: After Dudley shouts, "Wake up, Potter! We're going to the zoo," he pushes Harry back into the cupboard and runs into the kitchen. When he opens the door, the kitchen floor is visible and there are no floor mats. Yet, once Harry walks into the kitchen there is a taped black mat on the floor at the door and another black mat at the counter, under the stools that were visible in the previous shot, when Petunia bangs on the cupboard door. (This does not refer to the reddish mat Dudley stands on.)
Continuity mistake: When Harry and Hagrid walk into Diagon Alley, in the first shot, as they start down the street, on their right they immediately pass; 1- a man in black standing at the doorway to the Daily Prophet office, writing in a notebook, who then starts to walk away. 2- particular men and women walking past the store. 3- store window with Quidditch uniforms. 4- children looking in store window. A few shots later, they pass on their right a man, with bushy grey sideburns, walking with a woman dressed in black, yet in the next shot that same man and woman are chatting in the doorway to the Owl Emporium on their left. Then a few shots after that, still walking, Harry and Hagrid pass all the numbers, 1 through 4 again in close-up.
Continuity mistake: The morning of Dudley's birthday, Petunia wakes Harry and the next shot shows Harry in the cupboard with the shelves behind him. When Dudley runs downstairs and pushes Harry back into the cupboard, things inside are positioned differently. This also occurs in the two shots when Harry plays with the small plastic figures inside the cupboard and then when he peeks out as Vernon attaches the wood to the mail slot.
Visible crew/equipment: In the opening shot at the hut on the rock, when the camera pans down to Harry lying on the floor the long marks that are taped to the floor near the couch are visible. These are the positions of Vernon and Petunia when confronting Hagrid about Hogwarts. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
00:12:25 - 00:16:30Super Grover
Visible crew/equipment: When Harry and Hagrid walk down Diagon Alley, in the close-up of Quality Quidditch Supplies, a clear reflection of a crew member in a blue shirt is visible, at the top of the screen in the hanging vertical pennant, just as the man with the long red hair walks past the camera. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)
Revealing mistake: While Vernon kneels as he tosses Harry's Hogwarts letters into the fire, the interior solid back of the fireplace is visible behind the flames. On Sunday, the first letter (from the fireplace with a CG back) hits Vernon in the face as it flies by. In the following two shots of the fireplace, as more letters fly out, there are now large holes at the interior back of the fireplace that are visible. As the letters pour down from above, air is blown through these holes to blow the letters out and about.
00:10:20 - 00:11:20Super Grover
Continuity mistake: As Hagrid aims his 'umbrella' at Dudley while he eats Harry's birthday cake, in the side shot one end of the blue string (that was tied around the cake box) hangs down the side of the table, but when Vernon rushes Petunia and Dudley off, in this shot that end of the string lies on top of the table. Yet, when Hagrid says, "We're a bit behind schedule. Best be off," the string hangs off the side again.
Continuity mistake: As Hermione walks toward the troll, just before she asks, "Is it dead?" the long towel hanging from the rod beside the sinks is visibly straight. When Harry lifts his wand with troll booger/bogey, in the shot of him as he grimaces and groans, the towel on the rod is visible behind him and it's messy. Yet when McGonagall, Snape and Quirrell walk in, the long towel is straight again.
Revealing mistake: Just after Harry gets back on his broom, the Slytherine seeker chases the snitch and he passes towers of (in order) Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherine, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, on his left (this means Hogwarts is also to his left), when Harry flies up beside him. However, next shot as Harry slams into him, they still fly in the same direction, and the school is now on their right. Mistake with the background plate.
Continuity mistake: The size and style of the writing on the envelope from Hogwarts at the starts changes depending on the shot. When Uncle Vernon picks it up, the word "stairs" is a fair way from the edge of the envelope. When he flips it over and you get a close up, the same word is a lot closer to the edge.
Continuity mistake: When Harry lifts the mail from the floor at the Dursleys, the Hogwarts envelope flap is sealed shut and it has the red wax seal at the tip. Yet in the kitchen after he hands Vernon the other letters, Harry holds the Hogwarts envelope and though the red seal is on the back, the flap itself is NOT sealed shut. The wax seals differ in both shots as well.
Continuity mistake: When Madame Hooch leaves with Neville to go to the hospital wing, Seamus holds his broomstick with the bristles on the ground as Malfoy ridicules Neville. However, as Malfoy steps on his broomstick and then flies away, the bristles on Seamus' broomstick are now at the top. Then when Harry takes off on his broomstick, the bristles on Seamus' broom are on the ground once again.
Continuity mistake: When Malfoy first talks, the window behind him is bright blue. He says "it's true then, what they are saying on the train, Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts." Everyone says "Harry Potter" and when it cuts back to Malfoy, the window is much much darker. Both a mistake in terms of continuity between windows, and also a mistake because we'd seen everyone turn up in total darkness earlier, so the window shouldn't have been lit in the first place.
Revealing mistake: After Madame Hooch takes Neville to the hospital wing, Malfoy takes the Remembrall and mounts his broomstick, on a convenient protruding metal rod. Then when he comes around, though the students step away and watch as he begins to fly off, many of their eyes are not level with Malfoy, as he is merely edited into the end of this shot.
Audio problem: When Hedwig flies from Harry's arm, or owls deliver mail, you hear the sound of wingbeats. However, owl's feathers are specially adapted to allow for completely silent flight. See here for an explanation. http://www.owlpages.com/articles.php?section=Owl+Physiology&title=Feathers.
Continuity mistake: At the hut on the rock, Harry lies on a grey blanket spread on the ground between the fireplace and the couch. When Hagrid bangs on the door, Harry quickly jumps up and hides, leaving the blanket behind. Though the blanket is visible on the ground, in some shots, it is however, gone in the three wide shots with the Hagrid body double, as he zaps a tail on Dudley, then as all the Dursleys run upstairs, as well as the shot after Hagrid says, "We're a bit behind schedule, best be off."
Continuity mistake: After shopping in Diagon Alley, when Harry confronts Hagrid about Voldemort, in the first overhead wide shot Hedwig's cage is right next to Hagrid on the bench and is positioned a particular way. Yet in the next shot, the cage is much farther from Hagrid and is positioned the opposite way on the bench.
Continuity mistake: Harry speaks with Quirrell near the Mirror of Erised and the arrangement of the cloth in his turban differs in two shots than in the rest of the shots. First in the shot facing Harry as Quirrell says, "While everyone else was running about the dungeon, he went to the third floor to head me off," and then in the back shot just before Quirrell unwraps the turban, after Voldemort says, "I have strength enough for this."
02:08:05 - 02:09:45Super Grover
Continuity mistake: When Dudley falls into the water in the Python's exhibit, his clothes are completely soaked. Yet when Dudley yells and bangs on the glass, in the shot facing Petunia as she screams, it is quite apparent that Dudley's sweater/jumper is not entirely wet. The wet hair at the back of his head lies flat in the second shot as well.
Continuity mistake: After Seamus' disaster with the rum spell, the mail arrives. Ron catches his mail, then holds the Daily Prophet in his right hand and the letters in his left. Yet in the next close-up he holds the Daily Prophet in his left hand and the letters in his right.
Continuity mistake: When Mr. Ollivander takes the first wand out of the box to give to Harry, the board, shelf, roses, etc., are visible behind him. When Harry takes the second wand to wave, just before the vase explodes, in the close-up the hanging red feathers, black roses and notes to the left of the roses all visibly differ to the previous shot of them.
Visible crew/equipment: When Harry, Hermione and Ron reach the common room, on their way to the trap door, they're confronted by Neville, who asks, "You're sneaking out again, aren't you?" In the wide shot as Harry says, "Now Neville, listen...," Rupert Grint's (Ron) tape mark is visible at his feet.
Continuity mistake: In the Quidditch scene, when Madame Hooch steps onto the field she says, "Now I want a nice, clean game," and while she's looking up, her Hogwarts patch is on the left side of her robes. At the end of the Quidditch game when she says, "Gryffindor wins," her patch is on the right side of her robes. Interestingly, the shot of Madame Hooch is a flipped shot, yet it was pasted onto the scenic background, which is not flipped, but properly positioned.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Harry, Ron and Hermione come with Filch to Hagrid to go into the dark forest, watch the lamp Hagrid sets down. Filch says something like "A sorry lot this, Hagrid". Then the shot cuts to Hagrid (look at the lamp) then to Filch again who says "Oh good god man, you're not still on about that bloody dragon, are you?" then to Hagrid again. The lamp changes position between these shots.
Visible crew/equipment: The morning of Dudley's birthday, in the wide shot facing the kitchen when Harry walks in, to the right of the screen is a large framed photo of Dudley. The camera does not move as Harry walks toward the stove and reflected in that photo is a piece of studio equipment moving.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Harry figures out that Hagrid got his dragon egg from "Snape"(Quirrell), at the begining of the scene, Harry's cloak is buttoned and still is when he, Hermione, and Ron are running to Hagrid's hut. When he reaches Hagrid's hut, it is unbuttoned even though he never unbuttoned it himself.
Continuity mistake: During Madame Hooch's flying lesson, in a close-up Ron says, "Up! Up!" to his broomstick. In the next wide shot of all the students, Ron stands next to Harry, who holds his broomstick, and just before it cuts to the next shot, Ron visibly grips his broomstick as it floats up to his hand, as well Seamus, who grabs hold of his too. Yet, in the next shot Seamus still says, "Up! Up!" and in Ron's next close-up, he still says, "Up!" to his broomstick still lying on the ground, which promptly smacks him in the head.
Continuity mistake: Just after Flint leaps over the Weasley twin, in the next shot Flint tosses the ball forward - toward the hoop - with the school to his left (viewer's right) and Ravenclaw, Slytherine, Gryffindor and two staff (black/grey) towers behind him, to his right. However, in the next shot as the ball flies through the hoop (close-up), it is actually the hoop at the other side of the pitch - we see (in order) the Slytherine, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor towers to the left of the screen.
Continuity mistake: When Harry Ron and Hermione run to see McGonagall, there is an hourglass, a large book and a candle all sitting directly on top of her desk. Their positions change, especially in the shot facing McGonagall, when she says, "I'm afraid Professor Dumbledore is not here...," not only is there is another small book next to the candle, the hourglass now sits on the large book. The long iron inkwell in the middle of the desk has also been turned around.
Continuity mistake: At the hut on the rock, after the camera pans sleeping Vernon and Petunia, there is an overhead shot of Harry and Dudley downstairs. In this shot the hanging light, its switch and cable are visible over the stairs. When Vernon and Petunia are at the stairs, and she turns on the light, the cable and switch are positioned very differently. This occurs in following shots as well.
Audio problem: In the scene at the very end of the movie when Hermione and Harry are getting on the train, Hermione says, "Feels a bit strange going home, doesn't it?" Harry responds, "I'm not going home, not really." If you look closely, Harry says the words and his mouth moves. Then the camera changes angles and Harry mouths the same words once more, but no sound comes out.
Continuity mistake: When Hermione shows Ron and Harry the Gryffindor Quidditch trophy, in the close-up of James Potter's name, Harry's reflection is visible on the badge. In the reflection, the points of his white shirt collar and a good portion of his tie are seen, whereas, in the shots facing Harry the collar points are tucked into his sweater and only the tie's knot is seen.
Continuity mistake: When Hagrid knocks down the door of the hut on the rock, in the close-up of the bottom door bolt and the piece of moulding, the bolt is clear of the latch on the moulding as they both fall. Yet, in the wide shot the bottom bolt is still within the latch on the moulding, as they both fall.
Continuity mistake: In the overhead wide shot, before Madame Hooch says, "Good afternoon, class," as she approaches, each student stands directly behind the bristles of their broomsticks, yet in the next shot as the camera pans their feet, they stand between the bristles of their broom and the neighboring broom.
Continuity mistake: At Hagrid's hut, when he places the dragon egg on the table, the book lies right next to the cup and saucer. Yet in the shots looking up from the edge of the table, directly in front of Hagrid and the egg/Norbert, the book and cup/saucer are far apart for these particular shots.
Continuity mistake: When Hagrid is in Gringotts, in the shot facing Hagrid when he says, "Professor Dumbledore gave me this," his index and middle finger are on the side of the writing as he hands the letter to the Goblin Bank Teller, yet in the next two shots, Hagrid's thumb is on the side of the writing in front, as he hands the letter over.
Continuity mistake: When trying to catch Neville's Remembrall, Harry flies straight for McGonagall's window. The window visible in the wide shot has a horizontal beam that crosses the center vertical beam, yet the window visible in the close-up just has the vertical beam. The number of stones at the sides differ as well.
Continuity mistake: When Hermione is confronted with the troll in the lavatory she backs up and runs into the cubicle. In the overhead shot as she locks herself in, the pattern on the floor that is visible in front of the next cubicle is different than the previous and following shots.
Continuity mistake: While Harry and Hagrid stand beside Hogwarts Express, in the shot looking up at Hagrid as he takes the album out of his pocket, his thumb is on the back cover as he begins to say, "This is for you," yet in the next shot of Harry taking the album, Hagrid's thumb is on the front cover.
Continuity mistake: Mr. Ollivander says, "I wondered when I'd be seeing you Mr. Potter," and as he climbs down the ladder Harry is standing at the middle of the desk, away from the corner. In the next shot as Mr. Ollivander searches for a wand case Harry stands at the corner of the desk. However, in the next shot Harry stands at the middle again.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Neville lost control of his broomstick during flying lessons, we see a shot of him going straight towards the castle wall (this is the first time he sees the wall). When you see him zooming towards the wall there are many windows. However, when the shot changes and Neville actually bumps into the wall with his broomstick, there are no windows seen.
Continuity mistake: When Harry is talking to the snake in the zoo we first see the snake. Then in the next shot we see Harry with Dudley behind him at the other exhibit window and Dudley turns around and then back again. Then there's another shot of the snake, then Harry again and behind him Dudley turns around again and notices Harry, but why then and why not the first time he turned?
Revealing mistake: The shape of Harry's scar changes dramatically in quite a few shots throughout the film. Two examples being, the morning of Dudley's birthday, when Harry opens his eyes in the close-up, while lying in the cupboard and later, when his hair is blown back in the close-up as Voldemort's 'spirit' starts to rush through him while he holds the Stone.
00:04:05 - 02:13:25Super Grover
Revealing mistake: While sitting on the couch in the hut on the rock, Hagrid asks, "Did you ever make anything happen, anything you couldn't explain? When you were angry or scared?" In the shot when he's getting up off the couch, it is blatantly apparent that the fingers on his left hand are latex in this shot. The hands are visibly artificial in other shots as well.
Continuity mistake: When Percy leads the group of first years back to the Gryffindor dormitories for the first time, at the stairs he says, "Keep up please and follow me. Quickly now, come on." In this wide shot Harry and Ron run up the stairs first and Hermione is at least six people behind them. Yet, in the next close-up she is with them at the front, right behind Percy.
Continuity mistake: During the Quidditch match, after Harry pulls out of the dive, the shot changes. He is now flying completely in the opposite direction as he crosses the halfway line. He continues forward to what should be near the end of the pitch, but when he falls to the ground he is back at the halfway line.
Continuity mistake: While Harry lies on the floor at the hut on the rock, with his finger he draws birthday candles atop the birthday cake. When Dudley's watch hits 12:00, in the next shot of Harry, the candles visible on the floor do not resemble the ones in the previous and following shots.
Continuity mistake: in the fist chess scene (Harry vs Ron), when we first see the board, Harry's knight is at D3. As Hermione walks down the aisle Harry announces, and plays NE5 and we see the knight move itself to E5. Then as Hermione approaches the board, we again see the pieces and the knight is back on D3 again. Also, the black (red) pawn at H5 has mysteriously disappeared, or maybe retreated to G6.
Continuity mistake: Right after Hagrid tells the kids about playing music to Fluffy, they run into Professor McGonogall's classroom. Right before they run in, you can see a candle on a pole to the left of her desk. When they run up to her desk, it isn't there anymore.
Revealing mistake: Harry, Ron and Hermione are at Hagrid's hut asking him about the hooded man and the dragon egg. The background behind Hagrid, which is the hut, is really behind him, but when it cuts to Harry, Ron and Hermione it is very apparent that the kids were edited in with their background, which is the school.
Continuity mistake: In the sea hut scene, when Dudley steals the cake, there's a shot of him eating it and his pyjama shirt is pulled up, then it cuts to Hagrid, and he says 'He'll be under the finest headmaster...' and it cuts back to Dudley, but his pyjama shirt is back down over his pyjama pants.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Harry, Ron, and Hermione are walking towards Hagrid after their exams, Hermione is carrying a brown satchel in her right hand. Then Harry says, "Why didn't I see it before!" and they run. While they are running she does not have the satchel in either hand, her empty left hand is visible in a few frames as she swings her hands at the side of her body. Then when they get to Hagrid she has the satchel in her left hand.
Revealing mistake: When Harry and Hagrid are at Gringotts and are pulling up in the cart to Harry's vault, in the overhead shot you can see the various levels bellow them. In the next shot in the lower left corner you can see what appears to be blue screen just bellow the walking surface.
Continuity mistake: When trapped in the Python exhibit at the zoo, Dudley stands up, presses his wet palms on the glass and nervously bangs on the glass while dripping plenty of water on it. However, in the next two shots after yelling, "Mummy, help! Help me!" the glass is all dry and just wet beneath his palms.
Continuity mistake: When Hagrid and Harry step out the back door of the Leaky Cauldron, in the overhead shot there are many glass bottles on the floor, between the barrels. However, after Hagrid says, "Welcome Harry, to Diagon Alley," as they walk out the barrels are visible behind Hagrid and there are no glass bottles between the barrels. The stone ground differs in both shots too.
Continuity mistake: In the scene straight after the Quidditch match where Harry, Hermione and Ron are telling Hagrid about their suspicions of Snape, you will see all three are wearing scarves tied in different ways. When there's a change of shots, the creases in the scarves change. This happens mostly with Hermione's.
Continuity mistake: After Harry thanks Hagrid for his birthday cake, Hagrid sits on the couch. In the next two shots facing Hagrid as he pulls out his 'umbrella', Hagrid's fry pan suddenly lies on the couch, which is visible to his right. The way he pulls out the 'umbrella' and the position of the fry pan differ within the two shots. Moreover, the fry pan is gone after these two shots.
Continuity mistake: After leaving Gringotts, Hagrid directs Harry to Ollivanders to buy his wand. When Hagrid says, "Why don't you run along there and wait...," there is a close-up of the store. Under the name Ollivanders the three roll window shades are completely pulled up, allowing the lamp chain to be visible behind the curved showcase window and the window shade at the top of the front door is pulled partially down behind the glass panes. However, as Harry opens the front door in the first shot, the window shades to his left, in the curved showcase window, are partially pulled down and the window shade on the door is now rolled up.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Harry and the Dursleys visit the zoo, the first shot you see of the snake, he is lying on a bare rock with only moss on it. He is also lying with his head facing the window, and his body is curving to the right. However, after Dudley walks away and the shot returns to the snake, his body is curving to the left and now there are plants directly behind him where there was only moss before.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where Professor Quirrell removes his headwrap to reveal the concealed Voldemort, Quirrell is obviously bald. However, if you carefully watch the scene with the troll, Quirell's sideburns are present after he shudders as the troll exhales, as they are in a couple of other shots.
Continuity mistake: On Dudley's birthday, when Mrs Dursley wakes Harry and he sits up in bed, a cloth and hand brush are hanging next to him on the inside of the cupboard door. When Dudley shoves Harry back into the cupboard, there is now a cloth and a dustpan, but no brush. When the family arrive back from the zoo, and Mr Dursley locks Harry in the cupboard, there is no cloth, brush or dustpan.
Continuity mistake: At his home, when Vernon says, "Fine day, Sunday. In my opinion best day of the week. Why is that Dudley?" in the close-up his arms are crossed right over left. In the next wide shot, as Harry answers, Vernon's arms are crossed left over right. Yet in the next close-up, his arms are crossed right over left again.
Other mistake: During the Quidditch match, Hermione looks in her binoculars up to where Harry is. If you look at the reflection in the binoculars you can see Harry flailing around. She then looks over at Snape, but when we see the reflection in the binoculars we still see Harry, as if she were looking up towards him.
Continuity mistake: When Harry raises his hand with the captured Snitch, his back faces the Slytherin and Hufflepuff towers which are opposite each other, with the hoops between them. However, in the next shot he is now facing that side of the pitch, as other Quidditch players appear from that side.
Continuity mistake: The knotted tie string on Harry's Quidditch robe changes from extremely loose, to snug, to loose and so on, even in consecutive shots, from the time Harry speaks with Wood before they fly onto the pitch and throughout the match. This occurs with other members of both teams as well.
Factual error: The Hogwarts Express leaves from platform nine and three-quarters, between platforms nine and ten at King's Cross station, London. The platforms shown in the film as nine and ten are, in fact, four and five (the only platforms that have a wall between them as shown in the film). The real platforms nine and ten are in a separate part of the real station. In addition, when Hagrid and Harry are on the footbridge, they are walking towards platform one, away from both the real platforms 9 & 10 and the film's platforms 9 & 10. No wonder Harry feels lost when Hagrid leaves him to find the train on his own!
Continuity mistake: When Harry walks into the kitchen, Petunia tells him to take care of the breakfast and two of Dudley's presents, the blue design and the yellow, are visible on the couch. When Petunia asks, "Aren't they wonderful darling?" the camera pans the presents, including the ones from the earlier shot. When Vernon says, "Well some of them are quite a bit bigger than last year's," the two presents are again visible. The position of these gifts differs in all shots.
Continuity mistake: When Uncle Vernon is nailing a small piece of board to the mail slot, he nails it angled slightly to the right. When Harry's letters start pouring in and the small piece of board is ripped from the door, it is angled slightly to the left. The actual wood boards differ as well.
00:09:55 - 00:12:00
Other mistake: During Neville's ill-fated flying lesson, as he approaches the statue from behind, we see that the statue is placed atop a round turret with alternating levels of bricks around the top of the turret. Neville's robe then snags on the spear of the statue. When we see the front of the statue as Neville falls, the statue is now standing atop a flat, level section of wall.
Continuity mistake: When Harry and Hagrid arrive in London and are speaking about what Harry needs to buy, the shot of them walking towards the camera has a block of three shops on their right. I cannot make out what the first one they pass is. The second is a cafe, and has the street no. 35 above it. The one nearest to the camera is a fruiterer/greengrocer ? numbered 33. Hagrid and Harry pass the first shop, and are outside the café. The shot cuts to Hagrid and he passes buildings with the numbers 45 and 44 on them (strange if the odd numbers are on the other side of the street). His head is just about to pass the no. 44 (maybe two steps more and he would pass it). We then cut back to Harry, who is walking past a wine shop ? not one of the three shops above. When we cut back to the shot of Hagrid, (after he has taken a few steps from the previous shot of him) his head is just about to pass the 44.
Continuity mistake: The first wand Ollivander gives to Harry has a long slim handle with 5 or so grooves carved at the wand end. When Harry puts the wand down, the grooves are even with the binding of the book lying there. When Ollivander hands Harry the second wand, look to the left by the book and you can see that not only has the wand been moved, it is actually a different wand with a shorter, wider handle and only one groove at the wand end.
Continuity mistake: When Harry and Ron are on the train to Hogwarts, we see a shot of the sweets Harry has bought. Note the position of Harry's sweatshirt and that the collar shows no defects. A couple of shots later, the sweatshirt appears to have moved and more of his left neck is showing. A few shots later, when Hermione arrives, there is another shot of the sweets arranged very differently. When Hermione points her wand at Harry, there is a small tear in his sweatshirt collar.
Factual error: When Hagrid visits the Dursley family in the hut on the rock, Hagrid grabs and bends the shotgun barrel while it is still being held by Mr. Dursley. This is impossible. The gun is made of strong metal, and when Hagrid grabs it, it starts bending, while still in Dursley's grip. Seeing as how Hagrid (the half Giant) is very strong, he should either knock Dursley to the floor or pull the gun straight out of his hands (and maybe his arms with it), if Dursley were to really keep hold of the gun as it is bending. Mr. Dursley must have one strong grip.
Continuity mistake: At the beginning, Dumbledore is taking out all of the street lights, from one shot, the street light closest to Dumbledore on HIS right is still lit, but in the next shot, which is a close up of him taking the light, and shots later, the street light is out and he never "took" the light from that one.
00:01:05 - 00:01:55
Continuity mistake: When Harry lands and gets off his broom after catching the Remembrall during the flying lesson, he starts running over a shadow of the castle. But in the next shot, it has either been shot at a different time of day, or he has gone past the shadow and has run further up the path.
Continuity mistake: When Harry, Ron and Hermione are in the lavatory with the troll, the scattered wood pieces of the damaged cubicles change positions in consecutive shots throughout. For example, just before and after the troll drops Harry, in the close-ups of Harry the wood differs from the consecutive overhead shots.
Continuity mistake: When Harry is on his way to the restricted section of the library under his Invisibility Cloak, we see a shot of his hand holding the lantern (the first shot in the scene). You can see the end of his jumper. In the next shot, however, the end of his jumper is under the cloak, and it had no time to get there between shots.
Other mistake: In the scene where Ron and Harry are on the train to Hogwarts, the window to the compartment is open. We know this because the chocolate frog jumps out the window and is swept away by a pretty strong wind. Since the window is indeed open, shouldn't there be a visible breeze thoughout the compartment?
Other mistake: In the scene near the end of the movie where Harry boards Hogwarts Express to go home, Hagrid stands on the platform and waves goodbye. He is wearing a coat and looks huge, as usual, but you can see when he waves, that his hand seems rather small compared to the rest of his huge frame.
Continuity mistake: When the three heroes first go into the forbidden corridor and are spotted by Filch's cat, they run away, through the large horizontal corridor which must be at least 40 metres long (since we are given two long shots of it and neither of them connects by any physical object). They hide behind a wooden door which they close afterwards. When Filch looks in the other end of the corridor then leaves and we hear a very silent click, Hermione says 'Filch is gone.' The door they're behind does not seem to be open at all, and even if it is open a bit on the right side, Hermione's on the left side of it so she can't see whether Filch is gone or not. And can you hear a silent click of a closing door from forty metres?
Continuity mistake: When Harry and Ron rush into the bathroom after the troll to rescue Hermione, they push open the closed doors, but wouldn't they be open from when the troll went in there moments before? The doors can't have closed after the troll as when Harry and Ron push open the door, it stays open.
Visible crew/equipment: Hagrid surprises Harry with the box of birthday cake and Harry opens the box. In the close-up of the cake, as Harry holds the box with his left hand and moves the blue string with his right hand, a crew member's finger is visible under the box, over Harry's left shoulder. Obviously it is someone holding the box underneath, while Harry holds it with one hand.
Visible crew/equipment: When Malfoy steps onto his broom while holding Neville's Remembrall, the actor's two curved chalk marks can be seen on the ground near Hermione's feet, and just as Harry steps backward we can see the actor's chalk marks on the ground near his feet. (Fullscreen version).
Continuity mistake: When Hedwig delivers the Nimbus 2000, as Harry catches it, the curve of the Nimbus' handle, the packaging and the way he grasps it all differ in the close-up and following shot. Then when Ron says, "Let's open it," he moves his goblet and plate to his left towards Hermione's goblet, yet in the next overhead shot his goblet is still on his right.
Continuity mistake: During the scene with the troll, Hermione crawls over to where the sinks are and if you look at the floor you will see that there are only a few wet spots. In the very next shot, however, the whole floor is soaked (this occurs before the troll breaks all the sinks).
Continuity mistake: After Harry opens the package with the invisibility cloak, he stands near the red chair and when he says, "I don't know, some kind of cloak," the cards on the back board are visible. As Ron says, "Well let's see then. Put it on," he holds a Bertie Botts box in his left hand and has his right hand in the box. Next shot facing Harry, Ron visibly holds the box with his right hand and the positions of the pillow, cushion, envelope and letter differ on the red chair. As the next shot opens facing Ron, he holds the box in his left hand and his right hand is in the box. Then in the next shot facing Harry again, the bottom card on the back board is gone.
Continuity mistake: When we first see Hermione on the train, her tie is crooked. When she sits down, as Ron is about to change Scabbers yellow, her tie is straight and it remains that way while she is seated. When she leaves and turns around to tell Ron about the dirt on his nose, it is crooked again.
Continuity mistake: When Harry receives his letter from Hogwarts, he opens it and it looks like one letter standard size. When the shot changes, it looks like a card (but we saw Harry unfold it). And when they are in London, right before they enter The Leaky Cauldron, it's standard size again but now there is more then one letter. Notice the folded left hand corner.
00:15:50 - 00:18:35
Revealing mistake: During the chess game the Queen attacks the Knight's horse that Ron sits upon. In this close-up just before the spear actually hits the side of the horse, the large hole, used to aid the stunt, is visible in the belly of the horse between the stirrups towards the hind legs. This hole is not in previous shots. (Visible in fullscreen DVD.)
Continuity mistake: In Harry's first Quidditch match, Gryffindor scores the first goal, then we see the commentator announce the goal and change Gryffindor's score to ten - making a goal worth ten points. Soon after, Gryffindor score again. We then see Slytherin score a goal, then another. They then score a third goal, and the commentator changes the score to 20 all, but it should be 20/30.
Revealing mistake: When Harry, Ron and Hermione are making their way back to the Gryffindor common room, Ron says 'She knows more about you than you do', to which Harry replies 'Who doesn't?' The "solid brick" staircase moves so that they have no place to go but the third floor forbidden corridor. If you pay attention to the staircase it can be seen that there is a good gap between the staircase and the one it connects to when it moves and that when Harry, Ron and Hermione run off the staircase to the corridor the staircase made of "solid stone" does an awful lot of shaking.
Other mistake: Percy Weasley is obviously talking to the Gryffindor first years when they first enter the Gryffindor common room, but there are too many first years. There are 5 boys and 5 girls in each dormitory, so 10 first years in each house, but in the shot there are obviously almost 20 students there, not including Percy.
